I've always wondered about this game. It was one of those things that got meme'd in the early social media days and then people stopped caring about because there wasn't enough material for analysis. I'm glad someone spoke up enough on it to give us this video Good work Matt!
It's hilarious how Drake of the 99 Dragons and Nosferatu: Wrath of Malachi relased within weeks by the same developer, and both are still talked about today. Except one is still talked about because it's rather excellent, and one is still talked about because it's horrifyingly bad.
Maybe this is a bit forward thinking, but I think an April Fools version of Wha Happen that focuses on a game with troubled marketing or development but turns out well (Bloodstained or Portal for instance) would make for anice change of pace. Also whoever is picking the music for these videos has some great eclectic taste.
A pro tip to all up and coming game developers: If you want to turn your game into a media empire, make sure said game is actually good. Or at least functional.
What about Contra: Rogue Corps? That game received mixed to negative reviews upon release, and is considered by many to be one of the worst games of 2019 and another failed attempt at making a 3D Contra game.

They made a comic to go with the release of this game. In about 2006 I went to a horror convention. A dealer gave me this along with some other weird books. It sat in the back window of my car for probably a year and died. Now I'm glad I never read it.
This is one of the rare instances where something genuinely unpopular stopped getting installments. Because in reality, that’s very uncommon. Modern comic characters keep getting new series, despite all their previous series’ getting sh*t-canned due to lack of sales, unpopular movies keep getting sequels, etc. And all the actually good sh*t gets written off for tax-returns, and/ or abandoned forever.

When I was a kid I was at Walmart and my mom let me get a video game. I was taking a long time to decide which one to get, and my mom, fed up with my shit, said "how about that one? It looks like a comic book. You like comic books." So I got Drake of the 99 Dragons and, after so many tries to figure out how the fuck to play it, it eventually ended up taken forever out of my Xbox, sitting out of its case next to our TV, and with a piece of chewed gum stuck to it, until it went into the garbage where it always belonged. God bless Drake of the 99 Dragons.
Matt, I don't know if it's been said but I really appreciate the Advertising breaks. I hate when the ads cut people off mid sentence so to see you do this makes me happy. It means you care and I just wanted to say I care that you care. No homo
While the plot would make it hard, the design and art style for everything in Drake I can defintly see making a good comic book and TV show. The angular proportions and color use reminds me of things like Samurai Jack and some of Brice Timm's work. So I'll give them credit for thinking ahead with the multimedia plan.
Every time I see this Bruce Timm- infused fever dream, I can't help but think of ways to make this work. 2 or 3 more passes in the drafting process and you would've had the bones of a servicable game. A fun exercise for wannabe game devs: Strip apart the game and make well-considered decisions of how you'd make it work as a game and a story.
3:12 I've heard about that franchise, in another episode of "What happened?" (Altough it was more of a "What's happening?"). I'm still surprised that this has sold more than Metroid or Devil May Cry, and only slightly less than the main Megaman games.

Yeah. It's because you stopped yourself you edgelord crybaby. XP
Boy, Matt. Showing Adam Sessler reviewing the game for X-Play took me back to 2005. G4 was the shit back then. Hopefully it will be again
Me: "Alright, let's see what's on YT today..."
::sees this::
"Ooohh, this is gonna be good!" :D
Seriously, Matt, love your work.
the art-style kinda reminds me of the animated show "the batman"... so yeah, maybe should ahve started with a cartoon or comic instead of a game
*Matt McMuscles mentions all the good games of 2003*
Crash Nitro Kart: "AM I A JOKE TO YOU?!!"
What about Contra: Rogue Corps? That game received mixed to negative reviews upon release, and is considered by many to be one of the worst games of 2019 and another failed attempt at making a 3D Contra game.
Overheating guns.... in a contra game...
I just bought the physical version of this game out of pure curiosity and to have a piece of gaming history. Wish me luck as I start playing it
I like the change up in your style here. Especially the advertising breaks.
I remember being excited for this (even tho we were too broke for a game system) because I loved BTAS and the art reminded me of that. And then my friend’s brother got it and I watched him play and...w o o f
They made a comic to go with the release of this game. In about 2006 I went to a horror convention. A dealer gave me this along with some other weird books. It sat in the back window of my car for probably a year and died. Now I'm glad I never read it.
Hey Matt what's up I heard about this game before and I'm glad you made a video, I hopped over to se- *GAME OVER*
Keep up the awesome vids Matt!
Imagine going from publishing Drake of the 99 Dragons to Guilty Gear, Psychonauts and Serious Sam. Dreams really do come true.
I played the demo of this game included on the OXM Magazine like 99 times. I was a lot of fun as a concept.
I think Friday The 13th: The Game & Ghost Recon: Breakpoint would make fine additions to Wha Happun?
@@unicorntomboy9736 Yandere Simulator is still in development so I dont think that counts
@@unicorntomboy9736 Indeed it has, but is there enough actual development drama to justify it? Not to mention how it's essentially one loon plugging away while wrestling with issues, both reputational and professional.
Breakpoint just a flop and none of it is a mess unlike the other game they cover. It still have a gaming population and there terrible glitch breaking stuff or horrible development issues. Disliking a game doesn’t mean it a nightmare.
The only way I even remember Loophole was because that IP was used as a call-in game on a, now long gone, Swedish children's program that ran in the mornings
You forgot to mention that Stefan Ljunquivist is also the creative director of .... Biomutant
Hey Matt,
Just want to say good job with the videos mate. I love the advertising break cut screen which adds a nice touch that i havnt seen in other series.
I cheered up like a sports fan watching a last minute goal in a football game when I saw the thumbnail. Possibly my most hyped episode yet. Amazing job! Now, it’s time to cover Action 52 (because of Cheetahmen) in order to complete the unholy trinity of “crappy games that prioritized becoming multimedia IPs instead of good games on its own” that preceded Drake and Mighty N9. 4:18 Somecallmejohnny and Antdude collabs when? Also, Mystik Belle reminds me a bit of A Hat in Time, mostly because their MCs have similar designs.
Hi Matt !
It's pretty cool to hear some Under night in birth music (Elthun's theme) at 7:46
That's make me happy ! :D
And I love your videos since maybe 2 years now, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much your great content !
See ya and have a nice evening !
Do one on Limbo of the Lost, that game had a crazy development history
Oh heck, was that Under Night In-Birth music? It's great to hear that soundtrack again!
Damn.
The original Cyberpunk before Cyberpunk 2077
Matt,
I don't know if it's been said but I really appreciate the Advertising breaks. I hate when the ads cut people off mid sentence so to see you do this makes me happy. It means you care and I just wanted to say I care that you care.
No homo
Great video. This game had to be covered eventually. Loved the UNIST music in there. Amazing soundtrack.
While the plot would make it hard, the design and art style for everything in Drake I can defintly see making a good comic book and TV show. The angular proportions and color use reminds me of things like Samurai Jack and some of Brice Timm's work. So I'll give them credit for thinking ahead with the multimedia plan.
I love that remix of Starman's theme from Megaman Network Transmission in the beginning!
07:46 Eltnum theme in this what happened episode fits so well lol
As a stupid kid in 2003 I took one look at that cover art and knew it was a bad game
As a kid the only thing that stood out to me about this game as is that the character' art style reminded me of the batman cartoons.
I still remember the X-Play review of this game and it was glorious.
Nice use of the StarMan stage music from Mega Man Network Transmission. I'm hearing that game's OST surprisingly often...
you had my attention as soon as you used Network Transmission music in the video
Same! MMNT has an excellent soundtrack.
3:12 I've heard about that franchise, in another episode of "What happened?" (Altough it was more of a "What's happening?"). I'm still surprised that this has sold more than Metroid or Devil May Cry, and only slightly less than the main Megaman games.
Ah Loophole and Legend of Tann, the 2 fantasy book series made by Niklas Krog that I absolutely loved when I were a kid.
I remember how in a intermission show between cartoons, animes and irl programs on every saturday morning were calling up random kids to tell them what to do in the game based on Loophole.
Thx for reawakening some of my most dear childhood memories Matt.
The only interaction I ever had with this game was sticking $9.99 stickers on our remaining inventory before tossing them into a bargain bin.
Anybody remember the comic turned movie “Firebreather” about the half Kaiju kid?
ImmortalDeathGod holy shit I forgot about that
Wait, it was a comic?
@@letimartineznarvaez3129 yes it was an Image comic.(company that made Spawn, Invincible and Walking Dead)
Majesco : NOOOOOOOO You can’t just ignore Drake’s glaring issues!!
Idol: Haha Drake go shooty shoot shoot
shirtless in a long jacket. this would be dennis reynolds favorite game.
Gast looks like the nightmare before christmas game
You got to be kidding me! I thout less than an hour ago after watchin Pro Jared n AVGN on this n wondered "wonedr if Matt will do one on Drake" IMMA A PSYCHIC
I played this as a kid. I always enjoyed playing through it. I've played through it all the way through every so many years since I was little
What about Brave Samurai Musashi, the follow-up to the somewhat-obscure, but very solid, Brave Fencer Musashi?
A cartoon, comic and toy line. Huh....where have I heard that before?. The Cheetahmen? Is that you?
Hey Matt shoutout to you for pronouncing those Swedish names really well :)
Nice to hear Network Transmission getting some love.
They are the ones stopping the port of Double Dragon Neon? Now I know who to hate for that.
