It's actually pretty sweet how all the devs are like "man, we did this thing wrong, but it was my bad" Seems more like a learning experience more than anything else
The studio that developed it sure as hell learned a LOT from it, their new project Dirty Bomb was AWESOME in the gameplay department BUT they had a very bad project lead for waay too long and when finally a good lead came in, put the game back on track it was way too late and people already wrote off the game. Since then they ported Halo:reach for the masterchief collection and it did not recieve any bad press as far as I know so hopefully with that money they can finally make the game they always wanted and be succesful with it for once

I would love to see this game get remade. It would be amazing if the developers were given a second chance to make this game again and learning from there mistakes before. Personally, I thought the game was good despite it's flaws and heavily defended it when many thought I was nuts for thinking it was good. If it gets remade, it definitely could be better such as having more levels, more detailed story, strong character development, added dlc features, and updated graphics (this game would look stunning if it were cell shaded).
That'd actually be a fun fighting game title. Think: Every character from a different genre. You have, like, a dora the explorer-esque kids show character with a magic pointer mouse fighting a Cthulhu-looking motherfucker. I'd play the shit out of that.
Hey, I'm gonna play devil's advocate and say that the Batman: Arkham Origins multiplayer was, while monetized the hell out of, pretty fun. It consisted of 2 three-person teams from either Bane's mercenaries or Joker's gang. Then there are 2 heroes on the same team; Batman and Robin. The 2 gangs try to win by eliminating the other team's backup lives. The heroes, while they can respawn as much as they want, need to take down enough thugs of each side while also trying to prevent any other win conditions. It was really fun to play. Also, what's Brink?
Great multi-player, couldn't agree more. It's biggest issue was actually low player count and thus long lobby downtime but the games kept you looking over your shoulder since everything was out to get you, whichever side you were on
Oh, god, I forgot about the lobby wait times. I mean, I was kinda used to long loading times, as a PS3 player, but still, it was obnoxious. Also, I’m glad it was only 2 heroes, because DAMN they were over powered already. I remember WB having to patch the game to make it harder for the heroes to win, like upping gun damage towards heroes, slightly increasing the night vision goggle battery life, things like that.
Shit, I also forgot to mention while WB took down the multiplayer servers, you can still play the multiplayer on the PlayStation versions apparently. I can’t test it, because my PS3 is currently on my repair list, but I am excited to get to it.
I remember playing the shit out of this game when it first came out, I loved the idea of a parkour shooter. I'm hoping this pumps a little life into Brink, last time I checked it was free on steam.
My best memory of Brink was going to PAX East and being invited to a special off-site event for it, wherein I got a can of spray paint that had a fake bottom where it had the famous Brink mask. It was made out of the same material as men's briefs. Also, upon entering, a *very drunk* Adam Sessler was seen leaving. I don't remember alcohol being served there, but he seemed to enjoy his time at the event!
I remember having a lot of fun with this game when it came out. I didn't like how choosing your character's body type would force you to choose between what stuff you could parkour or weapon selection, but the depth of customization on your guns was really cool! My favorite was an assault rifle that I had sacrificed clip size, rate of fire, and reload speed all for the sake of power, essentially turning it into a (near) one hit kill sniper rifle. It's a shame it never caught on. I would have loved to see what a sequel would have brought to the table.
maybe it wasn't noticed, but I really appreciated the advertising breaks, it keeps the video from feeling like it's cutting you off in mid sentence. good call all around, 10/10
i remember pre-ordering and beeing extremely hyped for brink. When it finally came out i had alot of fun but never really understood what i was playing. The game didn't have alot of mechanics but they were so confusing and forgettable (for example bots or the character systems) that i stopped caring after a couple of days. after all it didn't really deliver what the trailers promised.
As someone who has lived and loved parkour for the last 7 years i have to say your parkour comment was the best part of this video. Love the vids, keep em going.
I remember enjoying Brink a lot at first on the X360 because it was a an FPS where I could play medic/support. I'm rubbish at shooting, but keeping my teammates alive and contributing to victory this way was a blast. But I dropped it after a few weeks because there was just not enough content. I was playing the same missions with the same objectives over and over again.
It was Sakamoto's ego that hurt this game. BTW he did say that the Prime games weren't canon. Today he says that other m isn't canon and prime games are now.
There’s not much that can be said about that wasn’t covered in the famous Something Awful write up. Maybe the update regarding Sakamoto not apologizing for it in the lead up to Samus Returns. Still would be neat to see it presented in vidya form
Thanks for covering this. This was a game that was heavily promoted in my lan party group many years ago, t shirt give aways, posters, etc, but I never really got what it was all about. All I knew was that it wasn't very good, but didn't know why.
Definitely. Only MGS I never bothered to beat. Just played the MP. Like who makes MGS open world? That ruins the whole point of the game with how you interact with enemy routes and the ways you outsmart them.
@@MoldMonkey93 MGS V still allowed you to do that, in fact I would have actually enjoyed it more if the world was a bit more fleshed out. It was honestly a pretty empty world in my opinion; with very little in between major locations.
4:15 YES. 👍🏻 PSA: If you’re gonna have midroll ads... make a specific cut for them in your video! It’s always annoying when a video is stopped mid-sentence because of an ad.
I know I suggested this before, but the recent news about all the cut content in Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time really made me crave for a Wha Happun in it.
A great write-up, but missing one thing. The artstyle! Brink got me excited because it looked SO good. The character customization was mind blowing for a game in 2011.
Gotta love that the trailers and movement system painted the picture of large maps to interestingly traverse and fight it and all it ended up being was a corridor shooter
I loved brink. I had no expectations for it. I didn't know it existed until a friend recommended it to me. Maybe its because of that that i had no problems with it. Growing up brink was what really got me into fps games. The fast paste varied gameplay was awesome, and haven't experienced a game like that since the release of it. Well. There was titanfall. Titan fall was awesome.
Such an underrated gem this game was a part of my childhood and it’s a complete shame that it didn’t meet the criteria we were expecting and to see it die off so quickly has left me speechless. This game definitely deserves a sequel or a remake! ✊
I remember Brink was VERY hyped in my highschool. Everyone said that they were going to get it and play together, then it was delayed and everyone forgot about it. Skyim and another few games were announced/ anticipated for 2011 and thats all people cared about.
Huh. Well. After 7 years, I finally know the story. And it’s more peaceful than I thought. Wow. This feels weird. Like coming across an old photo album.
The advertising breaks go a long way. I get so irritated when mid sentence 5 more ads need to pop up in the middle of the video, not interrupting the flow of the video with a little card that has thought where its placed, you get a gold star from me...what ever that's worth
I pre-ordered brink and played (offline) for years, I recently decided to play on ps now and was reminded of how good the narrative of the story was. I feel that they should make a second brink and A) make the story and characters a little more in depth and expand on the factions and possibly even include the third faction (also make it to where not all characters models are almost exactly the same) and B) actually make a fluid, well rounded game with better missions and not combining the multiplayer with the story mode. It would be an instant cop for me because I honestly had a lot of fun playing and listening to the story.
Konami boss: we need a metal gear game fast! Konami secretary: you kicked out kojima, how are you going to do that? Konami boss: WITH ZOMBIES! The kids love those these days. Konami secretary: I don't know about... Konami boss: And we'll add micro transactions, like additional save files! Brilliant, brilliant I say!
My personal experience. Before Brink came out, I knew exactly what I was getting into. I knew about Splash Damage and Enemy Territory, and knew it would be a multiplayer focused game. When it came out, the game was a lot of fun......when it worked. There was serious lag issues and game crashes. Story existed, but you had to play each map with each faction to get the full scope of the story, as each map had it's own timeline in the story. I personally think people didn't pick up on this, because in an age of Call of Duty and other shooters with multiple game modes and maps, Brink only had one game mode with 6 maps. Each map had objectives that pushed you forward, when most shooter fans just want to play TDM, point, click, and check their K/D ratios.
I remember being so excited for this game, I got it on the xbox 360 and played for like a week. I feel bad because I bothered my parents for months to get this.
I gotta disagree with you. There was really nothing in Brink that was typical of games in it's genre at the time. Even it's failures were fairly outstanding at the time. The games that aren't exceptional in any way, the games that become forgettable almost as soon as you move onto the next are the undying mega-titles of the industry like Call of Duty 2 or Fortnight. When you compare them to the dozens of Genre style games that tried harder or evolved beyond them trying to steal their player-base they really do nothing of note other than provide tons of players to shoot at any time of day.
@@michaelwolf8690 Mediocrity isn't dependent on whether a game tries fresh, new, or different things; it's dependent on quality of execution, not innovation or originality. Love splash damage games! Played the hell out of brink and dirty bomb. You should reach out to him, or I could help you get a hold of him if you like. In his own words there is a lot he could share about this.
@@infamouscrusader3363 Ikr, I would absolutely love it
@@Matt-pn7cq Me too.
I found the front cover of this game thrown on the pavement walking home from work once...
"Genre Breaker" sounds like a weird fighting game move.
That'd actually be a fun fighting game title. Think: Every character from a different genre. You have, like, a dora the explorer-esque kids show character with a magic pointer mouse fighting a Cthulhu-looking motherfucker. I'd play the shit out of that.
Genre breaker the movie the game
Yyyeeeeah no
When I was in middle school I traded Halo 3 for Brink... I deeply regret that trade. lol
I don't remember alcohol being served there, but he seemed to enjoy his time at the event!
dotncha just love waking up on sundays to see an episode of What happened?
I love this video series of yours, Matt. Thank you for producing these wonderful documentaries!
I appreciate how even-handed these are. Makes them a lot more interesting to watch than if they were just trying to be sensational.
The moral of this story: Think before you Brink.
god damn it that was gold
Sugestion: Grabbed by the Ghoulies
The moment Rare's golden age came to an end
Ohh yeah that game was trash
I liked it...
YES
@@AxisChurchDevotee I liked it too, brother
2:00 YAY No More Heroes music! I love it when I recognize soundtracks!
I love this damn game, i got it back before i had internet and i loved beeing able to play multiplayer game with bots. If it's free ima grab it
I remember having a lot of fun with this game when it came out.
Little did we know that Brink was the grandfather of the undercooked "live service" bandwagon
maybe it wasn't noticed, but I really appreciated the advertising breaks, it keeps the video from feeling like it's cutting you off in mid sentence. good call all around, 10/10
i remember pre-ordering and beeing extremely hyped for brink.
Lesson Learned: Don't rely on a Day 1 patch to fix your game.
@2:30 Absolutely fantastic choice of music Matt.
What song is it?
I remember enjoying Brink a lot at first on the X360 because it was a an FPS where I could play medic/support. I'm rubbish at shooting, but keeping my teammates alive and contributing to victory this way was a blast. But I dropped it after a few weeks because there was just not enough content. I was playing the same missions with the same objectives over and over again.
Metroid: Other M. Please do Metroid Other M.
I guess we were all at the BRINK of exhaustion waiting for this one...
I know my way out.
That joke put me on the BRINK of death
I'm out.
I remember my friend really getting into Brink, but after seeing the character artstyle I just remember being like nah lol
I weirdly feel like the devs legitimately learned from this game more than many other episodes of Wha Happun
Thanks for covering this. This was a game that was heavily promoted in my lan party group many years ago, t shirt give aways, posters, etc, but I never really got what it was all about. All I knew was that it wasn't very good, but didn't know why.
I'm more saddened that the soundtrack died with it
Seriously good job with your video editing, dude. I especially loved the little ad break 😅
This makes me wanna see you do Gotham City imposters
There's already vids on that
Classic af
That Scout during the medic bit was gold.
My favorite review of this back in the day was Yahtzee calling it a bad team fortress 2 that was hard to distinguish what classes people were
Oh man, that's right! They had health pool and mobility tagged to body size, ha ha, no matter the class! That led to some, uh, interesting moments.
I had so much fun playing brink, it was at one point one of my favourite games.
Anyone else kinda surprised Matt hasn’t made a “Wha Happun” on Metal Gear Solid V. I would’ve thought he’d have done it some time ago.
I have always thought brink was the most 5/10 game ever made. I can't name one other thing so perfectly average
I know I suggested this before, but the recent news about all the cut content in Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time really made me crave for a Wha Happun in it.
YEEEEEEEESSSSSS YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW LONG I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE
A great write-up, but missing one thing. The artstyle! Brink got me excited because it looked SO good. The character customization was mind blowing for a game in 2011.
When the heck did i play this game? I thought i played this when i was a little kid but i guess I didn't play it that long ago as i had thought
I love how you do your advertising breaks. It’s like I’m watching the tv so professional 😉
OH I HAVEN'T WATCHED IT YET BUT THE MAGIC WITHIN THIS VIDEO I CAN FEEL IT
Gotta love that the trailers and movement system painted the picture of large maps to interestingly traverse and fight it and all it ended up being was a corridor shooter
Remember spending good times with friends on this game back in 2011...
I'd never returned a physical release as fast as this one. I think i was back at gamestop within 3 hours
I'd like to see you tackle The Order 1886; that seems like it could be an interesting tale of staggering hubris
I remember Brink was VERY hyped in my highschool. Everyone said that they were going to get it and play together, then it was delayed and everyone forgot about it. Skyim and another few games were announced/ anticipated for 2011 and thats all people cared about.
Digging the "Streets Of Rage 2" background music.
Playing a Medic in Brink at the beginning of its life cycle when it still had players was some of the most fun I've ever had playing online.
You should do a first ever "What's About To Happen " about the the upcoming Fast & Furious game.
"Wha Gonna Happun?"
@@AtomicWandMassager That sounds even better
He should make ones about games they should make to make a amazing Trinity of videos called Make it Happun
I enjoyed brink, I know it was flawed but I had fun with what was there. I wish it could of been fleshed out more.
I was so excited for this game for years before it came out 😭
I played brink it wasnt bad it just wasnt i actually enjoyed it i wish it was more popular
Huh. Well. After 7 years, I finally know the story. And it’s more peaceful than I thought. Wow. This feels weird. Like coming across an old photo album.
Finally this came out.
Nice use of Havana Smooth in the video Matt! ROTT Soundtrack does go with everything.
Metal Gear Survive, Left Alive, or Quiet Man maybe?
If he could get information about it, maybe the Titan A.E. tie in game that never got released, or heck Titan A.E. in general.
Think most know what happened with Survive.
I have about 50 hours of playtime on Brink and I remember liking it *a lot* in spite of its issues. Hugely underrated.
The only thing I remember from this game is how bizzare the characters look.
THE MADMAN ACTUALLY DID IT
Yeaheh boai
I remember being so excited for this game, I got it on the xbox 360 and played for like a week. I feel bad because I bothered my parents for months to get this.
i loved brink and didnt regret it buying it day one, still play it sometimes with bots, prefer it to pretty much any shooter ive seen in recent years.
Love that no more heroes track in the background!

Ahh, Brink. The only game that caused me to break a controller in pure frustration.
When you look up Mediocrity in the dictionary, you see a picture of Brink.
It’s below mediocrity
I gotta disagree with you. There was really nothing in Brink that was typical of games in it's genre at the time. Even it's failures were fairly outstanding at the time. The games that aren't exceptional in any way, the games that become forgettable almost as soon as you move onto the next are the undying mega-titles of the industry like Call of Duty 2 or Fortnight. When you compare them to the dozens of Genre style games that tried harder or evolved beyond them trying to steal their player-base they really do nothing of note other than provide tons of players to shoot at any time of day.
@@Xport9 Calling that disaster mediocre is being extraordinarily charitable.
@@michaelwolf8690 Mediocrity isn't dependent on whether a game tries fresh, new, or different things; it's dependent on quality of execution, not innovation or originality. Most people would take a well-polished game taking a tried-and-true path over an original game with lousy execution any day of the week.
I gotta agree with you there. When I think about Brink I cannot thing of anything memorable or that stands out.
Love splash damage games! Played the hell out of brink and dirty bomb. It's really a shame because you said it right a lot of things in brink are just common shit we expect now like subtle story elements, dedicated multiplayer arenas, etc. In my opinion it was a head of it's time I'd kill for a Brink 2!
Make “what happened to syphon filter” since u brought it up in the vid
Didn't series just ended? Like, there were enough filters so developers just stopped syphoning them out?
What happened to Syphon Filter? It became Days Gone.
No, really, Days Gone is an alternate reality where Logan and Liam failed to stop the Syphon Filter virus.
Apollo 18 link??
Well, there’s this Easter egg:
ruclips.net/video/atHTWb6F-5U/видео.html
Also the scientists in Days Gone wear the same hazmat suits and Gabe’s taser is an unlockable weapon.
I honestly enjoyed Brink when it came out. Granted, I was only a kid at the time but i still loved it.
