You've out done yourself with this one. Amazing storytelling and a profound appreciation of culture. Please make this a series which explores misunderstood aspects of Africa!!
I would love to see that!
Stop calling it voodoo. It's not voodoo. If you're african, you understand that. If you're not. Hers the lesson.
Voodoo is a Western word. Invented to put the religious practise of Africans in a bad light.
Insanity
It's not misunderstood aspects of africa as Europeans, asians to practice similar pagan culture.like the lady said you can do good or bad.i think everyone knows that.
Yes, come to Kenya and do something on wife inheritance among some of our tribes.
Also barren wives "marrying" young girls to sire children for the family (this is done in my tribe, the Wakamba)
It's sad that colonization destroyed and antagonized so many cultures. Hula of the Hawaiians was also almost wiped out. Unfortunately, the Philippines seemed to have lost its pre-colonial culture and even our history was re-written for us 😥
Our Central European culture has mostly gone as well, "thanks" to a few barbaric bishops and priests. At least there is some kind of a renaissance now. But I still wonder where we would stand without the sudden reign of the church(es).
@@TuxmanXP this is true for the Balkans too! However in Bulgaria we still practice a lot of our pagan rituals and I see a lot more people trying to recover the Thracian traditions and practices despite the constant erasure of our history
Good pagan superstitions were wiped out.
It didn't. African Kings traded slaves for gunpowder and other goods.

@TK-lx6oc I really hope that Jesus Christ is not his savior! The big man upstairs does not like it if you were to give in to these deity’s, That is a big no-no in most religions! Look at it this way would your boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife like it if you were to go out looking for another person to love? That is just a simplistic way of looking at it just so everyone would understand what I was trying to say, Just remember there is only one true God! Good luck to all

They are not lost. They have a different religion. That's it.
Unbiased opinion: If your ancestors have practiced something for generations, it doesn’t really mean it is good. It could be many generations that have been fooled. Doesn’t mean it’s bad either but to each their own.

I am surprised that Tayo Aina didn't seem to understand or realise that Voodoo is actually well entrenched in our very own Nigeria, and that it was our various old Kingdoms ( Ife, Oyo , Benin) that stretched all the way to parts of Dahomey and Togo carrying their various cultural and spiritual practices with them!
I suppose we all learn new things every day , including of our own selves!!
Correct 👍
@Aframaco
Likewise. I was surprised as well the way he narrated it as if he wasn't aware of that tidbit.
But I think the ancient Kingdom of Dahomey, present day Republic of Benin was the birthplace of the voodoo/vodun religion. It spread east to ancient Kingdoms of Oyo and Benin in present day Nigeria.

I'm glad you touched on the history of the demonization of Vodou. There was a point in time when every rebellion of enslaved Africans was lead by Vodou priests. In fact, Vodou as a source of motivation and inspiration was directly involved in toppling chattel slavery as an institution.
At the commencement of the Haiti Revolution, we believe the following is the prayer/speech said by the Vodou priest who organized it all, Dutty Boukman (bless his name):
"...This God who made the sun, who brings us light from above, who raises the sea, and who makes the storm rumble. That God is there, hiding in a cloud, He watches us, He sees all that the whites do! The god of the whites pushes them to crime, but He wants us to do good deeds. But the God who is so good orders us to vengeance. He will direct our hands, and give us help. Throw away the image of the god of the whites who thirsts for our tears. Listen to the liberty that speaks in all our hearts."
After this prayer/speech, our Haitian Ancestors went on to defeat the three greatest empires of the day - one after the other. If I was to pray to a god, I will pray to the only God that listened to them.
There’s a difference between Vodun & voodoo
At what time were all rebellions lead by Voodoo priests?

In physical slavery the chains and the shackles are physical objects that can be seen and felt. Therefore, a slave has no doubt whether he or she is a slave. In mental slavery the shackles and the chains are moved to the brain; which makes mental slavery way more difficult to get out of because the slave no longer realizes that he or she is a slave.
