I am having the time of my life with this song. I've been studying french and have been using this song as a baseline for my progress. I've never read the English translation, so I've been slowly learning more and more of the lyrics of it and deciphering the meaning. It's a real sense of accomplishment and the song is just so pretty.

@@neesrinamafaza5679 In the original novel, Eponine is the daughter of the Thenardiers who fell hopelessly in love with Marius ever since she arrived in Paris. However, after Marius met Cosette and fell in love with her, Eponine felt more alone than she ever had before. While the novel tries to tell us this, the lyrics in French show us this.
You know how Jean Valjean says “on this page I write my last confessions,” maybe this is what he could have been referring to

I thought that Eponine's On My Own was powerful and awesome in English- then I discovered this, the French version, and I'm just blown away. Love this- love singing it. It's awesome.

This sounds powerful in any language, but the set is Paris, the play is originally french, so it just all goes together beautifully! I-m learning it and cannot wait to be able to sing it fully.
nelson seromenho I've been deliberately avoiding the translation of the song so that as I am learning french I can slowly decipher them myself. it's been working as a goal for myself.
The lyrics are so much more powerful in French; it almost gives the song a new meaning.

Lyrics here are great, but the tune from Eponine's song in the Orginal French Concept Album was rather sweet, and I wish something could have been done with it.

@@niels6190 The intro to L'un vers l'autre was reused a few times, including at the start of "A little fall of rain", but the neither the verses (starting with "Ils marchaient, sans savoir, l'un vers l'autre") nor bridge ("Ils descendent des nuages...") appear anywhere in the English show.

Some parts are better, some not. Tough call really.
I'm French, born in 1970 and prefer the original 1980 version. Fantine's song was much more powerful... More poetic and less "musical like"...

I don't know this one, as in the original French 1980 version, it is Fantine who sings this song, and the lyrics are, were so powerful... It was a song about poverty, lost illusions and great sadness... I loved it. I prefer the 1980 French version, it has been changed some years after, some songs have been replaced, lyrics have been written again, to sound more... Like a musical, and not like the novel.
J'aime mieux la musical originale française. Les chansons sont très fortes.

En français la poésie est plus forte. Les français sont plus capables d'écrire des paroles et les mélodies que les américains.

ça dépend des chansons. Si on écoute des chansons comme The rose ou Defying gravity, on peut pas dire que les américains ne savent pas faire aussi bien que nous.
Pour ce qui est des Misérables, je préfère la version française de Mon histoire, par contre J'avais rêvé d'une autre vie/I dreamed a dream, je préfère en anglais

Ça dépend pour qui 😅 j’ai joué Cosette et je me suis imprégnée de ce personnage donc forcément je préfère Cosette

La seule lueur d'espoir, c'est l'amour de Cosette et Marius.
