How Jollibee Beat McDonald's in the Philippines | History of Jollibee & The Tony Tan Caktiong

- In 1975, the 22-year old Tony Tan Caktiong decided to shell out Php 350,000 (Around 6,500 USD in 2019) and went on to franchise two Magnolia Dairy Ice cream parlors - The Cubao Ice cream house and the Quiapo ice cream house. Noticing that his competitors were gaining on him, he started asking his customers for feedback on how he can improve the shop further. They told him that they liked his ice cream, but they'd love it if he served hot meals.
He listened to what his customers were asking for, and launched the Yumburger. This turned out to be an instant hit. The Yumburger's success kickstarted the rise of Jollibee. But in order to win in the Philippines, Tony Tan Caktiong needed to act fast because word was spreading that McDonald's was about to enter the country.
McDonald's had a 23-year head start, and over 5,000 locations before it entered the Philippines. Its competitor was the 3-year old Jollibee. Tony Tan Caktiong had big plans for Jollibee, but he had two options: stand down or go head-to-head with McDonald's. He chose war.
This video is about the history of Jollibee, the inspiring success story of how Tony Tan Caktiong led Jollibee into beating McDonald's in the Philippines.

The fact that when you mentioned the "Yum burger" as being "our" burger is a testament to how integrated Jollibee is to our culture and country.
Yep, I have tried the Yum burger on a few occasions, I am pretty sure they have intestines as part of the beef parts. I find the Yum burger to be not very good, but I am an American. I am sure the people who grew up eating Jollibee from birth find the taste good.
Mike Jones The worst burger is the Burger Mcdo, which is marketed as a pinoy burger. But it was indirectly saying that a Filipino burger is mediocre. But I think the Yum Burger minus the hideous dressing is great.
@@eduardochavacano Never tried the Burger McDo, I like the McDouble which is double meat one layer of cheese, I don't think it's available in Philippines, and the Double Quarter Pounder, not sure if it's available in Philippines. The ground beef from Jollibee is nasty tasting, and I am sure they mix in organs/intestines into the meat.
@@mikejones5364 holy sh*t sir, just say that you dont like filipino foods

I was thinking about that
A perfect metaphor for this: back when lived in Quezon City, I always passed by the Jollibee at Barangay Sikatuna. Across the street was a McDonald's. The McDo was always there, reminding me of the Krusty Krab vs. the Chum Bucket... until it closed in 2010. The Jollibee stands there still. The McDo is now a Citibank.
Mcdonald's did not fail, they just did not dominate. They are currently operating around 655 Branches in the Philippines which is huge considering the size of the country.
Philippines food in general is pretty nasty, and McDonalds have a mostly American menu minus the spaghetti and fried chicken on the menu. Jollibee has filipino food which the locals love the taste. You put Jollibee outside of the Philippines and it will not draw patrons who are not from the Philippines, the local residents will avoid it.
@@mikejones5364 what do you mean by nasty?
@@troy4298 Taste awful, Disgusting, makes one want to vomit.
@@mikejones5364 damn bro adobo aint that bad
Not a fan, taste like burnt meat, plus I am not big on rice. I do like Balut, Pork Sisig, Chicaron Baluk Baluk and Calderta and some street food. But the rest of the food I can't eat, either too sweet or too much vinegar. I am born in Texas love me some Steak & Potatoe and green veggie
One of the factors that also contributed to the success of Jollibee was how it impacted the lives of regular Filipinos. Jollibee's food is equated as a prize for many. A very special pasalubong from anyone in the family. It was deeply rooted in our childhood thus engraving it and associating it with childhood memories and happiness. It is what most of Filipino children dream to get on their birthday, graduation, or even just after going to church on Sundays. And the food that children loved are still there until they get old. The same flavors and experience. It's a nostalgia. It was that special connection from the childhood that keeps Jollibee successful.
Mcdo did not fail in the Philippines. Otherwise, you won't see any in thr country. Jollibee is number 1... but it doesn't mean Mcdo is a failure.
yea. but you see more jollibee's than mcdo's in the Philippines
@Navvy yea, in second place. the title's very click baity to gain more views, they are both okay 👌
It’s actually pretty funny that every time there’s a jollibee or a mcdo somewhere you’ll know the other will follow
@@_____2219 when i was a kid I actually imagined that jollibee and McDonald's were rivals
What you dont understand is that for mcdonalds, anything below 1st is failure. McDonalds is the top fast food chain in almost all countries in the world, but they got outperformed and stayed behind jollibee even after decades in the Philippines. Thats considered failure for mcdonalds.
As a former McDo employee, I agree with this video. Kudos to the content for its accuracy.
I myself haven't tried many Filipino food but my uncle once gave me a jar of Filipino tomato sauce which I made with spaghetti, thinking it would be no different from the regular tomato sauces I made before. When my family took their first bite they thought I used ketchup as the sauce.
The mediocre spaghetti is actually good, especially if it has the hot dogs and the super market cheese.
@@eduardochavacano maybe but at the time it just tasted like very sweet ketchup pasta
@@blackwingz55 I am filipino I dont like sweet spaghetti sauce because it tasted like sweet ketchup the sweetnest is too much for my taste buds.
Sadly, Jollibee now serves smaller portions (especially when they removed the champ burger), has dirty or stinky stores (I remember the smell of grease and sweat emanating from the chairs and tables), and odd combinations (I'll never forget those god-awful strawberry fries 🤮) that would hardly come from a person with such background. It's sad to see a restaurant that started with placing the customer first grew into just another commercialized fast food chain.
Pandemic hit jollibee hard
the smaller serving is probably due to increase in raw materials(meat, flour) but they what to keep the same "pang-masa" price, hence smaller portions. As for the smell, that's on how the management handle the store. managers, supervisors, and even the franchisee on how they train thier employees and keep the cleanliness high.
Idk where you live but the city I live in, jollibee has quality stores, to the point where people can hang out there no problem
Depends on branches.
i guess strawberry fries was limited and was possibly experimental to test people whether they want them or not
That's also like every mall within the philippines had a Jabee branch in it.
I got amazed too when I first heard it all started in Davao.
I dont care who dominates between Jollibee and Mcdo, it wont make me rich anyways, i just enjoy whatever food i feel like eating HAHAHAHA
You can profit off from them by being a shareholder. Common sense.
Just noticed Philippines have a few Entrepreneurs because more Filipinos are consumers than producers. There might be a Filipino that has potential but doesn't have much support.
NGL your in Point. And no hate. While mostly Filipinos are resourceful, it weighs down on variables at play. Bread winners etc. Also the lack of foresight and large investment what make some or few only rise up in marketing. Only those with proper education and the boldness for risk taking accompanied by good awareness are the business people who goes Rich.

They’re Chinese-Filipinos. That doesn’t change anything except the Chinese way of doing businesses.
The rise of Jollibee serves as an interesting example of how to, at the very least, counteract the global market. By appealing to the core values and behaviors of their local base instead of casting the widest net possible, they retained a niche but more loyal fanbase. No corporate tricks or heavy marketing, just a deep understanding of what their customers want. And really, isn't that the point of entrepreneurship? It's not about giving you the "best" product, it's giving you *your* product, just like how you want it.
It's more than just "appealing to core values and behaviors of local base" (which literally just means being family-friendly and kid-friendly), there's some national pride involved in Jollibee being a rival fast food chain to McDonald's, which is a symbol of American culture. Not many establishments get to do tht
Foods that I like from Jollibee:
- Fried chicken
- Hotdog sandwich
- Spaghetti
- Localized products like Palabok, Breakfast Joy meals
What I only dont like from Jollibee?
Burgers! They are now becoming taste floppier than before.
Agreed but it has something to do with supply constraints and inflation meaning the equivalent of colonel saunders OG KFC vs the KFC ones corp. As the marketing goes as corporate Jollibee is slowly becoming more and more doing simple things to budget it's costing. So the reason burgers aren't so good anymore is because they're more quantity than quality plus they held belief in nostalgia holding people together
Now, Jollibee seems to be reducing its quality to make it more affordable (perhaps to avoid increasing prices too much due to inflation). I think Tony should check on his franchises again because if this becomes the norm, JFC will soon face decline.
JFC alone, not just Jollibee. They have already reduced the true quality of Chinese dishes for Chowking, quality of Filipino grilled Chicken barbeque for Mang Inasal, reducing & choosing cheap suppliers for making of pizza for greenwich, and also the same for Red Ribbon for making cakes/pastries.
The only franchise that I still like from JFC is Burger King, since they really maintain the same quality of flame grilled burgers
Its either price increase or quality decrease... Unfortunately, price increase is against what jollibee stands for so they chose to decrease the quality
Maybe its the branch the Jollibees here Still have the same quality as i remember.
Proud to be Filipino🇵🇭🇵🇭
Mcdo was kinda okay for me. I like their McChicken (sandwich) and plain Chicken Sandwhich since they don;t have one in Jollibee. also their Chicken Fillet meals.. that's it. Their Ice Cream was bad.
I think, Mcdo was sometimes famous just by being an alternative to Jollibee. Like for example, the Jollibee branch was full, then thay would go to Mcdo HAHAHA.
Yea dis true doe ahahaha. Whenever our local Jollibee branch is full or we dont have enough money we just go to mcdo.
If you tried the MacDonald in USA you would find the food much better, the Mickey D's in Philippines have a Philippines menu like fried chicken, spaghetti stuff you would never see on US menu. I will say the fries and burger taste the same in USA as in Philippines, I like the McDouble which isn't available in PHilippines. Jollibee wouldn't survive in the USA if they had lots of locations, but MacDonalds seem to thrive in the Philippines. I like the Fried Chicken from Jollibee, the rest of the food is horrible for my american pallet.
@@mikejones5364 no offense sir, but if your so called "american pallet" cant even distinguish good food, I kinda lowkey wanna stay away from the sad world you guys live in
@@gabyyy8570 stop being a fanatic for Jollibee. You're giving Filipinos a bad name.

Very inspiring! Great video from the Philippines!!!!
Really shows how important knowing your customers and taking into account cultural differences are. I saw someone say that rice everyday is boring for them, but for us filipinos that's the usual lol
What a incredible story about Jollibee. Love to hear a story about the Jollibee mascots. ❤
Before Mcdo entered the Philippines in 1980, Jollibee's major competitor was Tropical Hut. Tropical Hut is owned by the Que family who also owns Mercury Drug. That's why most Tropical Hut branches are beside Mercury Drug stores. However, Tropical Hut isn't a priority of the Que family and they just maintain the current stores.
The first ice cream house that was the forerunner of Jollibee was beside the old Quezon theater in Cubao... It is now occupied by Shakey 's pizza Peri Peri... early 1970s.. it predominantly an ice cream house which served merienda . Burgers and spaghetti..etc.. As a kid I was a frequent customer.. after watching movies in cubao.. then it transfered to Aurora blvd beside Coronet theater in the later years of the 70s and the rest as they say is history... It even survived a smear campaign during the 1979 - early 80s labeling their hamburgers as wormburgers .. made from earthworm..
My parents threw a birthday party for me in a jollibee restaurant when I was 3 years old, and I remember getting so scared of the way the mascot moved that I started kicking it's head wildly. I Still love Jollibee though lmao.
Even just the ad that were shown makes me hungry...lemme just order real quick-
Memes say that McDonald's ice cream machine is always broken... While Jollibee literally started as an ice cream shop. That's a WIN-WIN for Jollibee
This is really good analysis, though I’d like to add that perhaps McDonald’s expansion into the Philippines was meant to tie-down and contain Jollibee in the Philippines while it encircled in neighbouring SE Asian markets. Maybe they saw a reason to delay Jollibee’s international expansion because honestly, it’s my chicken place of choice now in Canada (Toronto). They knew Jollibee had global potential and wanted to slow them down with George Yang
You should make a video about chikboy, I remember that being a memory in my childhood
I remember that I used to love the cheese flavor
Now it's suddenly gone
Just as ABS-CBN is so powerful you automatically reference it when you say the word "Kapamilya" or even just "Pamilya", Jollibee is so powerful you automatically reference it when you "Chicken" comes to mind.
Underrated channel
I'm gonna share an interesting fact that a my whole family line knows.
The dad of my mom created the original logo of Jollibee.
Though there is no record of it since it was made as a commission. idk how that works before but the gist of it that all rights will go to the company after it's done
The original logo used to be color orange, then it got revised to red. that time the logo was claimed by another artist.
I don't blame you if you don't believe what you're reading. Neither did I at first, but as I talked more with my relatives in our reunion I was just baffled.
We kept his work alive by word of mouth...
Bakit ngayon ko lang nakita tong channel na to. Sarap panuorin. Grabe magresearch. Thanks dami ko natututunan!
I wouldnt say mcdo failed in PH. Jollibee may be #1 but mcdo is still alive and kicking. A close #2 to jollibee.
It did not fail in the Philippines! This is misleading or a misrepresentation of fact. It is a blatant attempt to provoke discussion by appealing to needy Filipinos with the constant need to feel proud in social media. Everyone who lives in the Philippines know that Mcdonalds has conquered decades ago and is everywhere.
McDonalds is not a close #2. More like a distant #2.
@@wavemaker2077 i beg to differ
I am surprised MacDonalds is successful in the Philippines.

I really like Jollibee but kind of despise McDonalds, in a funny way, because the Jollibee, near us, is next to a mcdonalds, also McDonalds is also good ngl, which is pretty funny, but later in the years, the mcdonalds there was switched to something else
im filipino and for me the sauce wasnt sweet enough but it was still perfect
the reason jollibee is loved by children is because the jollibee was stand for children when it was made and for birthday party until it became international andbecause of their spagetti and the chicken the jollibee became more and more stronger than the mcdonald in the Philippines.
i still remember my lola(grandmother) when she was alive we go to the city only the two of us just to eat jollibee, being a fav. of her is was so good that everytime she go to the city to buy something she always try to take me and i even like her more than my mother ever since she was still alive because my mother’s attention was from my older sister the middle one.
I feel like Jollibee is a lot healthier than Mcdonalds...
Your entire premise is wrong. If you think McDo's failed you have never been to the PIs... Jollibee might be #1, but McDo is in every mall and does very good business. Mostly college aged and up go to McDo and KFC. Families with small kids go to Jollibee. There is room for all - but McDo certainly did not fail.
it's weird to think that a Chinese expat made the most popular "Filipino" brand in the world
Yup
So he bought traditional American food over to Philippines but with a Filipino twist 😋
I remember a lot of jollibee branches when I was a kid (it's still open even now tho) and then after a few years later, there will be a construction near the jollibee branch and then there's McDonald's 😂
Title should be how they failed to become number 1 because they are the 2nd most popular fast food in the Philippines
But this title strokes the Filipino pride... 😎
I prefer jollibee's 2pc burger steak while i prefer mcdo's burgers
Great thing he chose to attack cuz I love Jollibee since childhood
350,000 pesos in 1975 is probably around 10-15 million pesos in 2021. That's not a small investment.
Anyhoo, McDonald's is piss poor in taste and quality. Their food taste like paper, they just don't tickle the Filipino palate
I remember when mcdo add burger steak into their menu. I kid you not it was traumatizing i literally almost puke, the problem of mcdo burger steak is the gravy. It was white and tasted so weird, and not like Jollibee burger steak which is delicious
Burger Steak is my favorite Jollibee menu
Their steak is really peppery which is wack, doesn't have much gravy so you rely on chicken gravy
if yall dont know mcd in indonesia have spicy fried chicken which is better than all the menu at kfc
Nice vlog
As I learned, jollibee is not a filipino fastfood but a chinese, because the founder was a chinese.. a pure chinese man
Jolibee: Peace was never an Option.
Your title is misleading and unfair to MacDonald's. They have over 650 branches in the Philippines and that is not a failure. Being second only to Jolibee is like getting a silver prize....still a win.
2:38 VERY WRONG. YOU DID NOT ACCOUNT THE INFLATION. THAT WOULD BE AROUND $40-50,000 in todays money.
I really love the jollibee chicken burger but no the mustard because 1 time my ttoth feel out while eating it.

Failed would mean the franchise didn't flourish in the Philippines. Jolibee is just more prominent and McDonalds is still around. Anyway, why do the Chinese bevome successful in the Philippines but Pinoys are still struggling?
the bee and the clown are just on the same level. The chicken in Mcdonalds is better and the Big Mac is more Iconic. Mc Donalds now looks more like a Starbucks and Jollibee kept its bright interior.
@@eduardochavacano I beg to differ, I think jollibee's chicken is better, not that Im bias or anything, but when it comes to fries, nothing will come close to McDonalds, thats for sure
Confucianism is a huge factor, most if not all countries in the Sinosphere (Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam) are heavily influenced by Confucian values.
The Philippines is more connected to the Hispanic and Indospheres.
Where Mcdonalds failed is making their products cheaper as the counterpart in Jollibee's menu where in they let quality of their food began to decrease just to lower the price. The fact that they're using international ingredients which is more expensive really compromised their quality over quantity battle in their products. The most obvious onw was their burger which taste really different and cheap, and I remember their Chicken Mcdo meal was P84, but when Jollibee decided to rollback the price of Chickenjoy to P76, Mcdo launch ther "new and improved" Chicken Mcdo which also rollback their chicken meal from P84 to P75 (and the taste became worse for me) lol.
First of all Mcdonalds did not fail. Since the main premise of the video is Falsehood, it becomes pointless to have a logical discussion.
