Regardless if you can go back an change it out right there or not. What these parts store are charging is for the convenience since they know you rushing to get back on the road so you would not to pay more money vs waiting a week for parts or returns. We used to rebuild starters. New brushes, new bendix, or new solenoid and that was usually enough to keep it going for a few more years. I needed new brushes a few years ago and the person at Autozone didn't have a clue what I was talking about. Fortunately, I had my original starter which I'd replaced a few years earlier with a used one. The brushes were barely better, but they worked and got me through the winter. I ordered new ones from eBay or Amazon and rebuilt the starter the following spring. It was working fine 3 years later when I junked the vehicle.

If you know what you yourself are talking about and can order it, Autozone or Advance Auto Parts has good prices. If you need info/advice, oreillys is where to go. Sad to see so many people not know what their job needs you to know, and not care to learn as they go either. And none of the parts stores pay enough to keep people that know the inns and outs.

If you’re going to be cheap id buy a used part at a scrapyard. Atleast you know they’ve been tested and it is oem quality.
If i were you i would buy my own parts for customers, i can imagine having to deal with people buying the wrong or low-quality parts is both exhausting and wasteful of your time.

The starter went bad in my 1990 Volvo 240. Two rebuilt units from Bosch were bad. The first new aftermarket one broke the casing. The second new one actually worked. What a total nightmare. After the second new one the ignition switch went bad. Converted that to a start button. New battery cables and a new alternator lead and everything finally worked.

I always test the starter outside the car..make sure the battery is good and try 24 volts..does starter always come defectived they r not brand new they r rebuild auto zone..auto advance..napa it may be more expensive but the chances r good...if u want a new starter u has to go to the dealer...but before anything i check the engine first before buying any parts to make sure the engine is not gone and take it from there..

If that’s a 1.9 brm, cam shafts are a weak point, mine were replaced before I got it, bottom end is solid. I’ve had to replace the turbo actuator (you need to grind down a 10mm socket in “length with a swivel on an 1/8 inch ratchet or get a swivel 10mm) replaced the transmission. Lot of torque bolts that are one time use. someone changed it from a dual mass flywheel to a single mass, have you ever seen that? And finally if you want to see how cool the brm platform is check out darkside developments, or dirt lifestyle. Respect for not being a dick as well

When my original starter when on the Fritz. I thought my battery was going because I would jump start it and it would crank and start. Turns out it was the contacts in the starter. Got new contacts and put them in the solenoid and fixed the problem.

Had a similar instance with my mom's ASTRO Van. Bought a new starter and installed it, and it just clicked. I took it off and bench tested it, it tested fine. I took it to AutoZone to have it tested, it tested fine. Then after all this, I checked to see if the engine was seized. And it sure the hell was! 🤨
She had to get a rebuilt engine. It cost her $2600 and the shop took over 2 months to complete the engine install. I should also mention that this was in the early 2000's, probably 01 or 02.

I fitted a $55 AUD Chinese made starter motor into my 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 powered Holden Commodore 5 years ago & it's still going good.
I did replace the solenoid last year for $75 AUD because the cable terminal came loose on the solenoid & galled up to copper threads a bit meaning that.I couldn't really tighten it.
I bought all of the parts off eBay locally in Australia !

  • @Lifeless11111

I never replace starters , i just refurbish them, and its super simple , just change the brushes , check the solenoid and you are good to go for another few years... I worked on my citroen xsara 1.9d 1999 , man those old european diesels were something special. I changed brushes and the soleniod because it was faulty and the first time i turned it on it almost sounded like a japanese car turning on. The total cost of repair was 10euro for brushes and 30 euro for new solenoid. The car is still going 3 years later on same brushes...

Exactly... that's the difference between a part's changer and a mechanic...I left a comment before I read this...I would have opened both of them up and made one working starter with the two of them on the spot in 15 minutes...he needs more experience and he will learn.

1 always bang on the starter with a hammer while someone cranks it over & B unless U work with new factory parts always bench check it especially if U R doing road service.
Anyhow like I said if U can bang on any motor that appears to be inop.,,, Like window motors just bang on the door panel with your palm or on the bottom of a fuel tank if U think a fuel pump is failing,,,. I this case smack the starter with hammer. Trust this from a 40+ year Tune Up Mechanic.

2:38 A/C compressor clutch shouldn't be turning with the crank pulley with the engine off. I noticed that when you turned the crank by hand, the A/C compressor clutch was turning also. That's a no go on any car. A/C compressor should not engage until a few seconds after the engine is running. Nobody else notice that? Unless that's not the A/C compressor to the right of the crank pulley?
