The time each job should take is estimated by the manufacturer. That information is sold/leased to repair shops so your shop knows what is fair to charge. E.g., An engine swap may call for 7.2 hours, while a timing belt service for the same vehicle might call for 5.0 hours. That time is then multiplied by the shops Labor Rate. i managed to catch mine before it exploded. unfortunately though, even you catch it in time it still means it needs new pistons due to the blow-by issue which means... full rebuild. junk transmission, junk engine. these things are turds with wheels
In some cases these motors don't crunch parts.Depending on the mileage, take the valve cover off, see if you can set the timing back and restart the vehicle. If you can, a broken chain guide probably caused it. Get new guides both chains and a new tensioner from GM. Locktite the guide bolts, GM didn't. Thats usually why this happens. A used engine could do this again.
We need more affordable mechanics like him! Because one of the comments by modernlifestyle is absolutely right. A shop can easily charge 5k easily for an engine swap. Yes paying that price is crazy but it is the sad reality for some people in certain parts of the states or anywhere in the world actually.
I don't live in the US, but knowing the market of used engines I would almost always repair my own engine rather than swapping, since unless my own engine is completely seized and scorched a swap engine can have hidden defects and need repairs that take more time and money than the original problem - so unless the bottom end is completely wrecked, have a hole in the block, I'd go for a repair :)

Loads of these modern engines here in Europe (UK) have weak rockers that break when pistons hit to save doing worse damage. Usually they need valves, rockers, chain kit & they’re good. Some end up rotating cam lobes, some break the assembly that holds the rockers (that’s what happened to my Ford Mondeo). Once a car hits a certain age though it’s just not worth it.

my dad had a 2009 traverse. WORST chevrolet he ever owned (constantly in the shop for CEL issues O2 sensors the works) one day his girlfriend at the time was getting in it after shopping and it just sounded like this.whirled over like it had zero compression. timing chain is a $3500 job for that vehicle. he had the work done, and the SAME DAY he got it back, the CEL came BACK ON for the oil pressure warning he had when he got the car and got told to keep driving it and that it was a computer issue. low and behold, he was driving it one day after all that and got on it to pass someone and BOOM! spun a rod bearing. the battery apparently died after because ALL the electronics in the vehicle shut off. we got pulled over, had someone we knew come connect a battery charger to it, and got it started. all we could hear was it knocking away. 219,000 miles and it was done for. it drove another 5 or 6 miles to the house where the guy who jumped the car lived (family friend we were going to help that day anyways) got it on a trailer within the week and got it back to the house where it sat for about a year before he decided to try it again. still knocked but still had all the oil pressure and it 100% was a spun rod bearing as it had been a little low on oil when he got on the throttle.
When he said $600 to swap out an engine, first words out of my mouth were “Come to my house!” Close to 12 years ago, I paid $800 for a yard engine, but over $1200 to get it swapped out. Two years ago, I got a used trans for $900, and it cost me almost $1300 for that install. While you are the most wholesome guy I've ever met not trying to rip anybody off
Interacting with customers is a real skill .
Lot more interesting than interacting with the idiot coworkers
Interference engines requires a Timing Chain replacement schedule, most owners neglected that part of car servicing.
Not all of them. Most are rated for the life of the engine.
For 600 bucks this guy must have angel wings. Using the youtube money to be able to outcompete others must be the final goal. Thats actually crazy smart. Actually i just saw your subscriber count. I dont know how you put food on the table with prices so generous. Doing Gods work.
i think he quoted her for just labor.....
Or a bad drug habit. 600 in labor. That's how much my side girl charges me daily
@@alanmendezca cope
Wow, super generous guy. Happy you are being a good human being.
Finally a honest mechanic 😊
the first problem is its an ecotech.
Newer ones are better
@@RigginTheRod010 I doubt it, the only Chevy 4 banger that has been somewhat decent is the cobalt ss motor
You just got a new subscriber! And that lady was a cutey and looked very honest! You did her justice!!! Glad to see good people helping good people!!!
Honestly if all customers were like that. ... fukin hell life would be golden. Lol
Understand what's the issue, not worried about what needs to be done and cleared the work. No issue paying for the job.
Honestly that goes a long way in my shop.
I treat everyone the best I can but I'll always go out of my way for a good customer.
Love your videos man! You give great advice, are really kind to customers and you seriously don’t overcharge them. I agree with the others! Part two and you could make money from these vids!
Lots of talk about mechanic work being easy. It is if you do it as a hobby, do jobs you want and no rush. Try doing it professionally every day and you will see it differently. I know, I was like that too, hobby mechanic for many years then decided to do it for a living. Its just not the same.
Except when its not a hobby you know what the fuck you're doing most of the time since you do it 8 hours a day, so its so much quicker to do.
@@Sup3rman1c So you should expect to pay professional rates then, not shadetree.
Bro, no way you’re doing that for $600. You need to pay yourself what you’re worth
Exactly. All these people praising him wishing they could exploit him too.
Stop. Please. When you do this every day of your life you can do this job in four hours. That's over $100/ hour. He's doing fine. He wouldn't be in his position if he wasn't doing OK.
@@Wolfcone You're not doing an engine on one of those in 4 hours. I've owned a shop for almost 20 years. Been in the field almost 30. Have had dozens of techs over the years. And we've done plenty of engines in these piles of junk. No one is a knocking out that engine job in 4 hours. Especially without a lift. And you have no idea what his finances even look like.
@@Wolfcone lol no you cannot, at least not correctly. You have zero clue.
@@do-it-dave For real. Zero clue.
600????? God damn bro you’re a honest and good mechanic. That’s cheap tho bro maybe raise your prices id say
Why so people can lose more money? If he's ok with helping people and still making good money for himself why does that bother you? Maybe he can take in more big jobs at a lower rate
Being cheap asf does not equate to being honest.
@@Carlitosway211 I never stated that being cheap equates to being honest 😂 take it how you want it
@@miguelaguirre5720 If that wasn't your implication, I apologize. I just see it all the time where people do exactly that.
@@Carlitosway211 I’ve watched multiple videos I think he genuinely cares of his customers and doesn’t up charge or say it also needs this and that trying to hustle i get it we all are trying to make a living but yk
Your a g bud, never change you just be you.
You openly offer payments? Hell no lol
I do through 3rd party finance companies. When I first started, I did it on good faith out of my pocket. Well, after getting taken advantage of too many times I put a stop to that. Now I get paid and they fuck their credit if they don't pay.
We do payments. One easy payment of the full price 😂
Yeah I avoid the larger jobs. I tend to do better having just a few small ones each day. Too much headache.
$600. Drugs aren't cheap and always needed.
I might have just had the head rebuilt. Anytime you put a used motor in a vehicle it's a good idea to change the timing chain anyway. I guess it really depends on if the pistons were damaged, how many miles were on the motor, and how much money I had.
I was thinking $2500 being crazy generous honestly.. this guy doesn’t value his time 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Good luck to you and I hope you go far with your trade. Its hard to find honest mechanics. Even harder to find ones that are willing to work in your driveway.
When he said "Eco-Tech", he didn't have to go any farther. The timing chains ALWAYS break. Mine cost me $3500. DO NOT SWAP ENGINES because you'll have the same problem, and you don't know the condition of the engine, you're swapping...
Yes. The eco tech could be brand new and it will fry a sensor and or leak oil within a week. Those engines hate themselves.
@@alexandergunaka666my buddy had the same engine in an Equinox that ran to 147k with nothing but oil changes and two $50 sensor replacements its whole life until it t boned and totaled. The problem with the engine is if you go according to the oil life indicator your internal components are going to get trashed. This eco tech is practically hard on engine oil .Key is to change the oil @ 30-50% oil life and drain and fill the transmission fluid every 30k and the vehicle should last for a while.
I have an 11 malibu 2.4 with 280,000 miles, still has original chains. It's all about maintenance.
@@mcompton2010 Proper maintenance doesn’t fix poor engineering and build quality. Just cause you’re an exception doesn’t make you the standard. My mother drove her altima up to 220k before the cvt went out, doesn’t mean nissan cvt’s are reliable.
Gotta love an honest mechanic ❤
By honest you mean cheap... By love you mean exploit.
Gotta love competent and prepared customers.
I'm a mechanic and I'm currently working on this exact problem on the same engine. It jumped time due to chain stretch and bent every intake valve in the head.
Such a good dude, respect!
Great dad helping his daughter with advice on get that taken care of!!
Those Chevy motors go for a few thousand bucks used , Well at least where I’m from
Sad for the family but you are taking good care of them. They'll be back on the road safe and good feels all around. 😁😁
$600 to swap the motor is crazy cheap!
Damn here in l.a is minimum 1000 and they end up telling you some bs that they need to do and charge you a couple hundred more lol
Bro know your worth, $600, trying to be cheaper would come back at you.
Straight up. And he gives a warranty apparently. Not sustainable long term.
Wow 600 in labor that’s incredibly cheap
In eastern Europe it's 300€
I believe matthew can charge his customers WAY lower prices for labor because he gets paid off of youtube and documents it, it really is a win win situation for both parties and us eager to learn more about mechanical issues keep up the videos!
meanwhile the dealership wants me to pay $1000 to replace one brake caliper
my dad had a 2009 traverse. 219,000 miles and it was done for. it drove another 5 or 6 miles to the house where the guy who jumped the car lived (family friend we were going to help that day anyways) got it on a trailer within the week and got it back to the house where it sat for about a year before he decided to try it again. still knocked but still had all the oil pressure and it 100% was a spun rod bearing as it had been a little low on oil when he got on the throttle.
what a nice lady offering to pay for an engine they don't have yet 😢
When he said $600 to swap out an engine, first words out of my mouth were “Come to my house!”
Close to 12 years ago, I paid $800 for a yard engine, but over $1200 to get it swapped out. Two years ago, I got a used trans for $900, and it cost me almost $1300 for that install. This guy is either full of love for his fellow man, cheating himself, or lowballing the community to take customers from the competition. Or maybe he just likes working for nothing.
Watch you on Facebook and looked you up on RUclips, I learn alot from you!!
$600 for an engine swap?! Damn, I do the same as you, and would have paid you that to pull the 4L out of my Ford Ranger! Had to use a 4 foot extension and ratchet wrench with a pipe just to disconnect the transmission. A real pain in the ass!
those prices for a new motor and labour are craaaazy…….$600 labour for swapping an engine? most places want that to change oil😂😂 I had the engine in my E90 remanufactured recently - including fitting 5k 😢
I dunno, man. a remanned head would get this running, so long as the pistons heads arent damaged.. The labor would be a lot less, too.
I flinched when i heard you try to start it😭
I'm currently working on this exact engine in an Equinox and it has the same problem. It jumped time due to chain stretch and bent every intake valve in the head.
Fucking hate equinox’s ever replace a water pump on one of those god gives me ptsd

Nice to see that there are honest people out there. Your honesty and straight forwardness is commendable.
You can be honest and still get paid what it's worth. That's why we have book time. He'll eventually learn not to give away his labor.
@@do-it-dave I agree and Matt is a great representation of that. You can get paid what you’re worth without overcharging the customer. Mechanics glorify themselves sometimes.
@@rcwrecker78 nah he's worth double that, he just doesn't know it yet. It's a pretty easy formula, book time × hourly rate.
This engine pays a minimum of 11.3 hrs for R&I according to Chilton labor.
At my rate that is 1,356 just in base labor. Wouldn't touch it for less than that because I know my worth and what it actually takes to do this job correctly. He will eventually learn he is undercutting himself.
@@do-it-dave I can’t speak for him but I’m pretty sure he knows his fees are lower than most yet he still stays his course. That’s commendable. Question. Chilton, are those standards for shops or individuals? For a shop I guess that’s in the realm of right. But, they have overhead and have to pay their tech(s). Still, I don’t feel that it takes from the fact that anyone with confidence and the correct procedure for the task can’t do mechanical work. RUclips is very informative as is the web.
@@rcwrecker78 it's industry standard whether you're a one person shop or 15 tech shop. It's what the manufacturer says it takes. Now if an individual wants to give away their valuable time at less than half rate that's up to them. But if they want to run a successful growing business that won't fly.
That's considered quite cheap enough based on the condition of the car's engine. After all it seems the family can afford it.
Haha
only 8$ to swap the whole engine? THIS GUY IS LOCO!
I like how the daughter has to translate everything he says to her pops.

what a sick video man, your a good mechanic!
I am not trying to rip people off because you are a angle and helping people, you are the best example of a human...... But you can't charge $600 to swap a engine, That is insane! unless you are planning on doing it CRAZY cheep for people just so you can get views and make the money off of social media as a result? A little *lost* for words...Pay attention in school kids🤣👍
600 bucks to swap a motor good lord this guy is santa claus.
The tensioner on the back of the head is notorious for getting stuck due to poor maintenance. A few gentle taps on the tensioner bolt with a 3lb generally solves it before this happens. You can hear it every cold startup. Sounds horrendous.
Thank you for what you do!!!!!
Just had to Swap our '05 Scion Xb's Engine with an '06 Scion Engine for $450 with 137k miles, plus $1100 for approx. 15-17 hours of labor charged by the Mechanic...
So 1400 sounds like a pretty generous deal, considering the horror stories friends have told me about their Mazda and Subaru Cars. Also heard Mazda parts/labor run expensive, too.
$12,000 is what Ford quoted me for a used motor with 100,000 miles.
