Tesla satellite phone will be revolutionary..it will destroy other cellphones companies..waiting for the premium tesla phone that you can carry anywhere in the world with internet and satellite connection.. awesome.
To get all that connection is going to require hundreds of thousands of those starlink satelites, if there are losses due to failures or collision replaceing those satellites into the correct place in orbit will be no easy job. Just saying this isn't going to be easy promise to fulfill.
i think they must have some solution for it like self aligning satellites there are 3 other satellite companies providing the same satellite phone services for years now only diff is this is low earth orbit and a bigger constellation ..
mutty and nick, currenlty only roughly 3400 active satellites atm running what the world has. starlink will have 30,000 satellites...im sure it will work out

Using Starlink, there would be no need to rent a satellite phone when heading out into the wilderness where there are no towers. That alone is huge.
Just no way. Current starlink transmitters require 100W.
@@WorBlux So are you saying the signal does not come directly from the satellite to the phone but instead comes from a satellite to a ground station transmitter that must rely on 100W to transmit a signal to the phone? That doesn't make sense to me.
@@daffidavit he is not saying that. But ur guess could be right since we will not find miracle tech to get that to few Wats to be usable, but it is possible phone could be a dish that drains 100W from wall. 90W is standby goes above 160W
@@daffidavit The starlink dishes they are sending out to get internet consume 100 watts of power. You aren't putting that in a phone. For high speed data in a phone you need under a 1 Watt. Two orders of magnitude difference.
The satellite and starlink connection is real, the idea you could carry around the transceiver and power supply for it in your pocket is simply tech fantasy.
Sure you could probably make a limited rate voice/text fallback that fits into form factor (64kbits/sec at best) , but that's not what is being promised in the marketing material (starlink internet (high speed date) on a phone) And even this would require a retrofit of the existing satellite constellation, and is a market niche already served by existing consetllations.
There are some serious issues I worry about. The lights from the satellites could disorient insects who depend on the stars to navigate, killing them. The space junk could obstruct Elon's own space ambitions. I just don't see this ending well.
If Apple made an electric car, they would make all the charging stations incompatible every two years.

raspberry pi is designed to be as cheap as possible, they're good for running one application 24/7, like a security camera or a thermometer. they would be useless for the way we use phones today, running 10+ apps in parallel and driving a nearly 4k 120hz screen.
it would be about powerful enough to call / text or open an internet browser but that's about it.
Because of the synergy between the already growing in popularity products, there will be a lot of people wanting to switch to it. Especially if it's in the same price range as the rest.

Smartphone market is a tough one. Trying to get a pice of it starting from ground up not gonna be easy but I’m eager to see how it works out for Tesla. I just hope they develop their own OS instead going for Android like everybody else.
iOS and Android have tens of thousands of apps to choose from. Getting app support to that level would be nearly impossible. I'm curious to see what approach is taken to overcome that? Imagine trying to create a compatibility layer to run apps from either platform. What a nightmare that would be.

Tesla is just in the beginning, the technology will advance farther than anyone expected and Musk knows that the more pieces he puts on the board the better. Most of the companies are focused on money and to make huge profits, Elon is focused on creating a better alternative for all of us and the profit is applied to create more projects or push the ones that are already in motion even further. Just the fact that he decided to set the goal to go to Mars is hands down, most billionaires and governments just want to maintain the status quo, he went above and beyond.

I'm definitely looking forward to see what comes of this, and I hope the project is successful. The part that really has my interest peaked is the Starlink compatibility. I've always thought it would be hugely beneficial if Starlink offers smaller packages to make it easier to use their internet while traveling, and baking it into a phone would be a huge step.

@@lijath I'm honestly 100% on board with you. I'd be interested to see if anything happened, but I doubt Tesla would want to get into that market. I'd think it'd be more likely for them to add some sort of Starlink chip to other smart phone makers like Apple or Samsung, if they did that at all.
@@mikeandersonwa if you look at the current starlink receiver it's more close to a satellite dish than a chip. If the current starlink is already Wi-Fi capable then why wouldn't you just use the chip that's already built into every single phone that exist currently. I don't think it would make sense to even develop the technology into a chip.

sadly it's not that simple, the processor inside tesla is tailored for few specific job, maybe you can use it to run as your home PC, but due to its architecture it may not outperform common Intel chip in common PC multitask.
Yeah.. pretty sure those chips pale in comparison to Intel and AMD and other mobile processors. If they were of similar spec/cost, they would already be in use for consumer electronics. Processors are an extremely competitive market, too. It's pretty foolish to even entertain this.
@@qztronic Obviously, if they were to release this tech for this market, they would optimize it or just create an entirely new processors for that purpose. They definitely know how to make one, so I don't think a couple of tweaks here and there will be a problem for Tesla lol

I haven't researched, but I have setup Lodges in Canada with Starlink and Voice calls are excellent with the ground station. I just cant imagine a handheld device will directly link to Starlink. I'm going to guess you need to own a Tesla auto with built in dish and your Pi is wireless from there. Or he builds out his own Cell Towers and backhauls those over Starlink. Will be a game changer.

A few distracting comments. A hand held device is not going to link with Starlink Satellite. You can read many articles about dish install and need for clear unobstructed sky. A smaller less powerful device is not going to fix that.

See, I'm a Samsung user myself, or more, an Android user, and I had a Samsung Galaxy S5 for a number of years before I eventually got a hand me down phone of a Google Pixel XL.
I just want a different phone from a company that is known to be good with technology. Providing it's not going to be Apple phone prices, I plan on buying a phone like that.

1. I never said that a phone is just about the hardware. (If you think I did, pls point out exactly where I allegedly said that).
2. Tesla is literally one of the leading software companies in the entire world. Their cars are driving robots that not only use in house hardware, but also software. It wont be long until the most important aspect of a car is not it's speed, handling, acceleration or efficiency, but rather autonomous driving capability and entertainment (Both Tesla can offer with public autonomous driving right around the corner and a 10 Teraflop computer as well as 3 screens in the car.). Tesla has the software skills and if they needed help with hardware, experts from SpaceX would be there to help.

Trying not to overhype this, but Tesla could absolutely crush the phone market.
They are experts at manufacturing at low unit cost. They are industry leading in AI, and probably in batteries as well. They make their own screens. They design, and make, their own computer chips. I don't really see any thing worth having in a smartphone that Tesla can't do.
Finally and I hope they bring it with a lower price and way better specs just to finally humble the the large phone companies specifically Apple and Samsung

the note 3 was the best phone ever produced. easily change batteries, glass and screen. i had a battery that could run on a single charge for six days with bluetooth and wifi on 24 hours a day and being used 12 hours a day. i used it for 6 years until it wouldn't work properly with the internet. all they have to do copy is the formula. abilty to use third party batteries and very simple replacing of screen and glass. boom best phone in existence.
Yes, looks and sounds very interesting. I would like to know how weather proof it is?. I use a phone that works in wet and cold environments. Holds a good charge level, 36 hours and is quite robust, with out looking like a brick.

I use Cat 42. It's a smartphone, rugged. It's not bad, there's others. I have an older one and it's still working. My children use it to play games on.

I think the best part of the proposed new Pi phone has to be the teleporting feature that seems to have been totally overlooked by this introduction, also no mention of the phone's ability to plug into the home's electricity supply and have it power the entire house for several hours in the case of an emergency.

If it's "connected" to Starlink, and I don't have to pay any "extra fees for...anything" (re: it's basically a device that makes use of my internet connection), then it may be the FIRST Cell Phone I ever buy/use. (and yes, that means I've never owned a cell phone).

oh well, connecting to starlink simply means a transmitter/receiver capable of transmitting to satellites like Bgan terminals already do. I would love to see how these sat modems are made so small to fit into a phone and how much power would be needed to keep it alive. I am very sure they will do it, but it would never be free because satellite has cost but then musk can launch his and it's not like fees is paid in space to keep satellites in orbit.
No, Starlink costs money. It’s never free. People are already paying for Starlink, and internet speeds are currently unstable.

I think key to the phone industry is its functionality features. If its more than a phone and complements other Tesla products, it will probably do well, but convincing iPhone users to migrate is a tall order and will likely take some genius marketing. Or maybe just Tesla owners will be more apt to do so.
ive only been an apple user for years when it came to phones and would to switch to the Tesla PI if the software is user friendly enough that even a 7 year old can use
