It just irks me sometimes when I see people just make blanket statements about a particular vehicle being a glorified version of a Toyota and think somehow Lexus has just been getting away with slapping an "L" on the back and jacking up the MSRP. These cars are amazing and even I take for granted how much time and attention to detail the Japanese have put into these vehicles. Just my .02
I really loved the old GS, every surface was so pillowy soft. But the new NX is definitely on the shopping list once available. Test the electric Lexus, Thomas.
When my GS 450 was in the shop for maintenance I had an ES 300 as a loaner for a day. While it was certainly comfortable, it just felt so sluggish compared to the GS. Slower acceleration of course, less powerful brakes, a much larger turning circle and the engine was noisier despite being smaller. In my opinion the GS is just one step higher on the overall quality / luxury ladder than the ES.
I think most people are getting it wrong with the es. This car wasn't built to be a performance one but rather something that is comfortable, fuel efficient, reliable with attention to detail on build quality, not to mention the fact that it's a hybrid and therefore saves you money at the pumps as well as better for the environment. I have a 2019 camry hybrid and I can assure you that the two cars are totally different when driven back to back. I'll take the es over my camry any day. Thanks for a great review as usual Thomas and a very Happy Xmas to you.
But you get all of that in a better package with any other European rival. Not only the germans. Volvo, Jaguar and even the newer DS9 all seem more upmarket... And lets be honest, in this segment, which of these cars you think are ineficient? Or poorly built? I mean, a S90, in case you dont fancy the germans, not only equals the ES in the fit and finish department, it utterly destroys it in the material quality or comfiness side.
@@AI-qd4vbNone of those cars will last trouble free outside of warranty. That is the point of the Lexus ES. Luxury is also about going from point a to b reliably not just a “fun” car. What’s the point of the car if it’s always in the shop….
The DS is trully special. Intelligently built for its purpose. Its even quiter and more detailed in its design than the most baroque of the Mercs. I dont think the Lexus is quite at this level of uniqueness and quirckness. I think the ES' most obvious competitor is the A6 actually. Striking design but contained sportiness. Average material quality but great fit and finish. The S90 is a class on its own in my opinion. The focus on the most important aspect of a car, safety, makes it trully unique. You wont find a single S90 with subpar lightning systems like base germans or clunky driving assist systems like that of the Lexus. Its material and fit and finish quality is also exceptional and the design is very reminiscent of their old boxy days. Quite boaty to drive though, which is unfortunate. And its heavy so not that efficient either...
I got the latest Camry as a rental early this year, in a high trim, and have to say that that's a pretty luxury car. I assume the make the Lexus more sturdy with more welding pints in the chassis and higher quality interior, but I'm not sure if you can do 'far better' than the Camry looking at that trim and what most will pick for a premium E segment car.
@@dragospahontu I'm sure it's better. But several car media have pointed out that the difference might be too small to recommend spending extra for the Lexus vs the Camry. It might also be that in Europe, cars are so expensive that people are hardly buying new ones and only on company lease. Since the European brands are cheaper, Lexus comes with an extra premium while Toyota did everything to price the Camry extra competitively.
what does "real world quality" mean? If we're comparing performance, handling, tech, interior quality, style... then the Germans are far better than Lexus or any other Japanese car brand
@@kristians2704 it means components that don't break. Components that are well engineering and made with a good materials/plastic rather than the flimsy plastic the Germans use under the bonnet.

I think the opposite of what you just said is actually true. People who don’t know cars probably think more of Lexus and don’t necessarily know they are Toyota reskins.
@@danstrader9418 the Toyota Camry has a very good platform already, this is why the ES is based on it. But the cars offer a different experience in my opinion.
@@kristians2704 If I would be looking for a performance than I would go for something else - this car is not about the sport driving, in my opinion. A huge respect to Thomas' attention to details in his dress. He is always dressed in according to a car on review. Very nice style and makes picture look good.
The ES is designed for the US market. The aim is to cruise comfortably at 104,61 km per hour. German counterparts are made for brief periods of mindless speed on the Autobahn. As the ES is made for comfort, sport seats and big wheels don't do it justice. The dynamic offer in the Lexus line-up were the GS and IS, both killed off in Europe. Which is a shame, especially for the IS. The GS never found its customers in Europe, so replacing it with the ES makes some sense. But why kill the IS? It was the most suitable offer for the European market : the compact sedan (an estate would have been great, but only the first generation got a shooting break, ahead of it's time). If they had to kill off another model, it should have been the LS who's only customers in Europe are the Japanese ambassadors. Anyway, it's all about stupid SUVs with Lexus nowadays. There is some hope with an eventual electric line-up, but it’s going to be a long wait. And Genesis might fill the void... ps: why does every body feel compelled to make fun of CD players in cars. They still offer the best sound rendering. What's the use of a great sound system in a car, when the only thing you can play on it is compressed music from your phone or a streaming platform? 🤔
Whaaaa? You can play high fidelity audio from your phone too... And you dont have to change cd's every time you want to listen to another album. Or limit yourself to 10 to 20 tracks on an album for every given drive. If they'd at least provided you with a cd charger or memory function...

@@lt.seantopperharley6369 because in Europe we mainly get small hybrid engines. In the US, Lexus sells serious cars with big engines that would kill any German car.
The autobahn test is interesting because it's one of the only places in the world where you can drive over 130km/h on public roads. A car developed anywhere else would not have extensive noise testing above these speeds, and would also never be used at those speeds in most places. It's no surprise that German manufacturers are the best in that regard.
Just a couple of years ago we were all like "wow awesome touchscreen control, cool" but now we are "thank god for real buttons". I think things like climate control on the screen only has grown very old quickly.
I think Lexus doesn't do interior lightings like MB and others because it decreases visibility to what's outside the car, making it harder to see at night. So while not as "cool", it is indeed safer.
Love the buttons and knobs. Steering wheel must be leather! New cars are getting carried away with displays and lighting which has nothing to do with driving and is more distracting than anything. There was a time when Lexus lagged the competition but the Asian car companies are now more in touch with consumers.
Why do the built in gps navigation look and feel really bad in cars? So laggy and out dated. One pays thousands and they give them an Arduino level navigation system.
Thanks Thomas. True. The 3.5L six cylinder is the Lexus/Camry to own with the improved inlet porting...standard. The six cylinder didn't sell in Australia and is N/A. My 2017 2.5L Camry was more than adequate in Sydney's driving back roads
This car may not have the more modern technology of its German competitors but the one area it will outperform them: reliability! This is why I would choose this car over its competitors.
Awesome review! Thank you. The ES300h is primarily used for someone in "comfort" focus. If you live and work in your car like salespeople do in the USA, this is a good vehicle. Inexpensive and very quite. By the way, the ES will last 20+ years (Built that way intentionally by Toyota). I still drive a 2013 LS460 V8 for work (with 318,000 km on the meter). Germany makes the best performance cars but for USD$50k, the ES300h is hard to beat. Danke!
Toyota and Lexus seats are extremely comfortable. I recently drove 3400 kms on a long journey in a Toyota and my back wasn't even sore once which it usually is in my E Class and in the 5 series and A6. They don't need fancy seat kinetics and countless adjustments because the seat itself was well designed. There wasn't even pressure that I usually feel like there is no blood flow in my legs. Renting that Toyota and experiencing it over 3400kms gave me huge respect for Lexus and Toyota. It's funny you mention seat ergonomics because since the W212 E Class on, Mercedes seat ergonomics went down a lot. They used to be so comfortable back then with the W211 E Class and W203 C Class etc. But now the comfortable seats is only reserved for the S Class which is bs. My E Class makes my back so sore no matter how I adjust it. I used to be an avid Mercedes fan but no more. They're not what they're used to be. Cost cutting is evident everywhere in all their cars now.
I have a 2010 Camry, a G30 530i and W212 pre face-lift E200. The Camry is extremely comfortable with it's plush seats and makes long distance driving a breeze. The Merc and BMW have stiffer seats but are nicer to drive.
There is something extremely pleasant about riding in most Toyotas, even the Corolla just gives this very pleasant ride experience. Lexus just ups it more and gives noticeably more refinement. Euro cars feel heavier and more weighted, which is good in a way, and the firmness of the seats and ride is different, more pronounced, in the Euro cars. Even the softer riding Mercedes have an underlying firmness where the Lexus has a weighted softness to it.
Surprised you didn't mention the Mark Levinson sound system. I believe that's one of the best reasons to get this car. In a Camry, at least in the UK, you cannot get even an upgraded JBL sound system or sunroof as an option which I'm to not take business from the ES.
I honestly feel its a rival to the 3 series and C Class, it's just a larger bodied entrant into that segment. I honestly prefer their SUV designs right now while hoping for a CT revival as an electric hatch. Those new Toyota batteries would be great in a new CT.
I really like the old Autogefuhl intro with Thomas briefly speak the car and the music with some shots of the vehicle. The old videos were like peice of art. Since when the video starts with Thomas speaking with no rest... It just feels too rush for me.
Best in class in many aspects for sure and for the high speed test , non a Toyota/Lexus hybrids are made for that and to be expected the results, still very good car for long motorway driving, all you need is to keep it within speed limits, 65-70mph perfect 👍.
A few things to add. Lexus in Germany gives up to 15 years warranty, as suppose to German brands only 2 years. Also the discounts at Lexus are often huge. I got an offer on the latest ES in Business trim for 45k. Nothing German even compares for that price.
I think that's pretty simple. The Japanese (apart from Nissan) tend to not add the newest technologies the moment they're ready to use in cars. The Germans especially are on the cutting edge, so they kind operate as "Guinea pigs". Don't know if there are some deeper reasons as to why, Toyota is a huge supplier of finance to other manufacturers and maybe we are unaware of such supplies to European manufacturers. I remember visiting their Paint supplier a few times for work and had no idea how much of the supply chain was owned by Toyota, from the supplier of the containers to the materials used in the construction of the building, all Toyota owned. The organogram of ownership for those entities was a scary Web. But surprisingly they are open to questions about everything, unlike a couple other manufacturers that were clients of my employer.
6:16 Who tf calls the LFA style instrument cluster "unnecessary and funny"? Europeans think a Mercedes' creeks and rattles are "features" , but something out of a Lexus supercar is "funny". Also, it's not based on Camry, it's based on Avalon.
That moving cluster is ridiculous. And we also criticize Mercedes here more than enough. Camry, Avalon and Lexus ES all share the same base platform. It is correct that the ES is closer to the Avalon though.

Hey Thomas, Thank you for your sophistaced explanation. I have a BMW 330e and it is way to stiff for me and it is killing my back. From a comfort standpoint; would you choose the ES300h or Honda civic ehev? Thank you
Working on a Sunday and the day after Christmas! Very impressive. The ES is very long and Lexus seems behind German and even America automakers with infotainment and navigation systems and designs. It seems that Lexus designs and engineers from an Asian mindset and not with foreign markets or consumers in mind.
"Asian" mindset? Korean cars and Chinese are far more focused on infotainment and navigation as well as designs. Especially Chinese. So, it's too broad a brush to say "Asian" IMO. Also, Toyota is going to make some big improvements in both areas in the upcoming years. The software Arene looks very promising.
Thomas, would you say the price difference is justified to upgrade from a Camry to the ES? Is there a major difference in NVH and luxury features despite having the same power train? How does the door closing sound on the ES compare to the Camry? Thanks.
Well it is nicer for sure! But You should compare the exact offer and make a decision based on your budget. I also commented on this issue in the driving part, did you listen at that part?
If it is based on the Camry which is a D-segment sedan, wouldn't this car be more appropriately compared to the 3 series, C-class, and the A4? Or is it the pricing that makes it go up a class to the E-segment?
Great review as always! Thanks Thomas. About reliability... Are Toyota and Lexus really better or is it just a mith? And what about rust? Even the new Corolla starts to rust at the underbody after less than 1 year...
@@autogefuehl thanks for your reply. I'd rather buy a Skoda Octavia 1.5 TSI DSG. More headroom, more legroom, bigger boot, less tyre and windnoise, better performance, better rustproofing and a lot less expensive 🙂

Source: Me. I am a 10+ Lexus employee who has sat in on trainings with some of the top guys from Toyota/Lexus. I don't care if you buy a Lexus or not, personally.

@@wolfgangvongoethe2259 Hahaha, the infamy is universal it seems.
In my opinion the GS is just one step higher on the overall quality / luxury ladder than the ES.

finally you review some lexus cars
I think most people are getting it wrong with the es. This car wasn't built to be a performance one but rather something that is comfortable, fuel efficient, reliable with attention to detail on build quality, not to mention the fact that it's a hybrid and therefore saves you money at the pumps as well as better for the environment. I have a 2019 camry hybrid and I can assure you that the two cars are totally different when driven back to back. I'll take the es over my camry any day. Thanks for a great review as usual Thomas and a very Happy Xmas to you.
Happy holidays!

If only they were as reliable as Lexus 😅
@@AI-qd4vb The S90 already has a pretty poor reputation for reliability, especially the diesels.
@@AI-qd4vbNone of those cars will last trouble free outside of warranty. That is the point of the Lexus ES. Luxury is also about going from point a to b reliably not just a “fun” car. What’s the point of the car if it’s always in the shop….

Lexus and Autogefuhl, great pairing. Can't wait to hear your opinions on the updated SUVs.

The ES is more of a Volvo S90, DS 9 and Audi A6 competitor because all of them are fwd based.
For me the DS and Lexus offer a more unique experience.

Finally, Lexus reviews. Thank you Thomas. Quality levels are well known to be far higher than Camry so no, not a Camry.
Appreciated!
@@djoetma Camry is very well made, but the Lexus is on another level.
@@djoetma I can definitely see that. It is like buying an Audi A3 instead of a Golf.

@@danstrader9418 the Toyota Camry has a very good platform already, this is why the ES is based on it. But the cars offer a different experience in my opinion.

Moving dial idea taken from LFA. One of the coolest cars ever in the rest of the world.
CD players are underrated for sure.
Whaaaa? You can play high fidelity audio from your phone too... And you dont have to change cd's every time you want to listen to another album. Or limit yourself to 10 to 20 tracks on an album for every given drive. If they'd at least provided you with a cd charger or memory function...

Finally a Lexus! Thx for the great video! What would you choose between G80 and Es300h? Asia premiums doing their job well done!

Yeah it's really strange with Mercedes, I also feel that they are not good with seat ergonomics at all
I have a 2010 Camry, a G30 530i and W212 pre face-lift E200. The Camry is extremely comfortable with it's plush seats and makes long distance driving a breeze. The Merc and BMW have stiffer seats but are nicer to drive.
Same here, I got a 540i and a old w211 e55 and a camry xle. Camry is quiet and so comfy for long rides
No sound indeed
6:17 amazing design and artistic. Like the Peugeot system they are brining something fresh.
I honestly feel its a rival to the 3 series and C Class, it's just a larger bodied entrant into that segment. I honestly prefer their SUV designs right now while hoping for a CT revival as an electric hatch. Those new Toyota batteries would be great in a new CT.
Loved the CT, would be amazing to see a new version.
The CT was a great hatch that came to the market too early. At the time, Diesel was all the rage in Europe.
UX is kind of the new CT. But agree with what you're saying.
The ES is more in the middle of 3 and 5 series I do agree
Think it's great they didn't rush into EVs just to keep up with the others, they've ensured they aren't selling us garbage.
I really like the old Autogefuhl intro with Thomas briefly speak the car and the music with some shots of the vehicle. The old videos were like peice of art. Since when the video starts with Thomas speaking with no rest... It just feels too rush for me.
Me too, however youtube algorithm doesn’t like it
Best in class in many aspects for sure and for the high speed test , non a Toyota/Lexus hybrids are made for that and to be expected the results, still very good car for long motorway driving, all you need is to keep it within speed limits, 65-70mph perfect 👍.
There is no speed limit in Germany.
And no idea what mph is
A few things to add.
Lexus in Germany gives up to 15 years warranty, as suppose to German brands only 2 years.
Also the discounts at Lexus are often huge.
I got an offer on the latest ES in Business trim for 45k.
Nothing German even compares for that price.

Why do you think European carmakers do not make vehicles as reliable and durable like Japanese manufacturers? Lexus for that matter.
Good question
@@autogefuehl Ridiculous? Seems the brilliant engineers and those that buy them in huge quantities will disagree with you. The fact that there are no known cases of failures you calling it "ridiculous," seems to be the only thing ridiculous.
