      It's really funny how some of the more purist-minded fans get on the Jackson films for giving some soldiers plate armor and crossbows. And here's this game licensed by the estate with Warcraft linebacker shoulderpads.

    • @raskolnikov6443
      @raskolnikov6443 Год назад +11

      @@misterbadguy7325why is that funny? The estate has made many bad decisions and currently it’s basically run by enemies of JRR Tolkien.
      The movies have huge lore issues and it’s fair to point that out. Overall I like them, but issues like the weird feminist Eowyn scene with the Nazgûl must have Tolkien spinning in his grave lol. „No man can kill me“ means no human can kill him (man as in mankind) and than she takes off her helmet and says something so unbelievably stupid and out of universe/ character, just to score feminist brownie points (Jackson probably had the Oscar and Hollywood crowd in mind). Such a botched scene. Aragorn is so different as well, totally different personality and motivations. Movie Boromir and Denethor are a travesty. The latter is basically just a nutjob. I’m glad Tolkien never saw these movies lol. The Music is phenomenal though and I can overlook all those issues (there are many more) to an extent. Still better than contemporary Hollywood movies.

    • @Sareth94
      @Sareth94 Год назад

      @@raskolnikov6443 "weird femenist Éowyn"...
      Maybe you should re-read the Battle of the Pelennor Fields:
      "Be gone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! Leave the dead in peace!"
      A cold voice answered: "Come not between the Nazgûl and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shriveled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye."
      A sword rang as it was drawn. "Do what you will, but I will hinder it, if I may."
      "Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!"
      Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed that Dernhelm laughed.... "But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn I am, Eomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Be gone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him."
      Book Éowyn pulls the woman card *before* she gets the shit kicked out of her & maybe she doesn't *explicitly* take her helmet off, it just "disappears" in between Merrys observations - so it's possible to say it's implied she took it off, because why else would it fly away..
      The movie is a "fair" representation of the proceding, even though it took out a lot of the dialogue to make room for some admittedly unfitting comedic flail-flailing.
      Book Éowyn also only needed one strike to kill the Witchkings beast - how's that for "feminism"...
      It also appears to be a close literary reference to Macbeth, with very much the same kind of 'fine print' subversion of a prophecy.
      The movies have many, often weird, alterations from the book, true - but maybe drop the fucking "fEmIsiM" - you sound like a clown.

    • @ryanpringle8313
      @ryanpringle8313 Год назад +63

      @@raskolnikov6443 Agree about the estate, but I don't think Tolkien would be spinning in his grave because of Eowyn's line during the scene with the witch king. She says this in the book "But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Eowyn I am, Eomund’s daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him.” Honestly it's even more direct in the book, because Eowyn explicitly points out that she's a woman. If Jackson was really looking to score points with Hollywood feminists, he should have left the whole excerpt intact, instead of shortening it to just "I am no man".

      The closest feature I can think of from another RTS game would be Command & Conquer Generals. In that game, neutral dwellings such as apartment buildings and certain bunkers could be loaded with infantry. The American faction had helicopters which could fly above the bunker and drop in troops to clear it and take it over.

    The tabletop War of Ring is really, really good. I was literally turns away from absolute victory when my brother had Gandalf abandon the ring-bearer, gather a few motley northern soldiers, conquer Moria, and sack Dol Guldur, all in one round! Tearing victory from my cold evil hands. Now, no longer does Sauron in his lust for conquest leave his northern fortresses quite so poorly guarded anymore.

      from ages ago but just to say it. Christopher didn't hate the films because they made his father's work into an action movie. its a common misconception. he disliked the idea of making them into film BECAUSE it would make them into action movies. he felt there was so much content, detail, storythreads and such through the books you simply couldn't fit into a movie and it would take away so much of that he saw as magical in the writing and by its nature as a film it would have an overabundance of action. he didn't hate the films he just didn't like the loss of depth from the books.

The voiceover, music and charming graphics with some surprising details are some of them. Also I play it for the multiplayer magic. It was one of these few games that never required anything to play multiplayer. Just any local connection would do, and boom you can play with your friends. You'd be surprised how much fun you can have with this game in multiplayer mode. The map editor was also very easy to handle so you could actually make some crazy maps yourself and have a ton of fun with stuff like a battle against 10 balrogs or something. It will always be one of my favorite games for all of the great memories.

    I tell you, this game was one of my absolute favorites back in the day. That and the Fellowship of the Ring. It was nice playing through book parts and also alternate scenarios. I loved the art style too. The atmosphere was beyond perfect with the music and narration.

    It's important to remember that the non-film related games weren't made by the estate either; they were licensed by them, but made by Vivendi. They had just as much creative freedom over their games as New Line Cinema had with the films. Actually, they might have had more since the games were far from the definitive adaptations of the story.

    The brass sections in the evil track made me double-check who composed for this game - it was Lennie Moore, but it has a very similar feel to the music of Lind Erebos (Mikhail Kostylev), a Russian film and video game composer who did the music for rebooted King's Bounty games (Legend, Armored Princess, Warrior of the North, Dark Side) and who also wrote a number of LotR-themed orchestral pieces.

    0:30 Look, I understand why Tolkien's son might not have liked the Peter Jackson movies (most likely due to so much content being changed, left out, or both) but then I must pose the question: if he (Tolkien's son) had to do a thrilogy of moves based on Lord of the Rings, how would he do it?
    If he stays 100% faithful to his father's novels, then each of the movies would be five hours long (if not more) and at that point he might as well just make it into a television series instead. But then again, what if he decides to make some changes, what does he change? Which charecters and events does he keep and leave out?
    Its impossible to make a 100% faithful adaption of a novel, unless you just straight-up make it a TV series. Then you can have as many characters and events as you want because you're not constrained by a time limit (You are, but not in the sense that once the episode is over, that story is over. The story continues into the next episode)

    • @F1ghteR41
      @F1ghteR41 Год назад

      A point has been made a while ago that TV series are way better suited for transferring large novels into an audio-visual medium than feature films. The problem here is that one would be hard pressed to find a talented screenwriter to undertake such an endeavour, especially without significant interference from the likes of Amazon or Netflix producers. So in the end the answer to the question would be meaningless, unless one has a firm understanding which producers are you working with and what are their views.

When I was a young boy, I'll play the trumpet every day, because I want to be like him. I played for years, and finally one day I approached his skill level. I love this song, and play it more than 5,000 times. My family has been denied, because I love this song for me. "You hurt my ears, stop," they say, but I never did. There is a religion, which I lead, is committed to this song and its creator worship.

      Because he's kind of an insecure dick who's own writings never amounted anything. He's literally living off daddy's money. While most of the books were rather quiet and focused more on the consequences of events and the journey itself rather than action, the chapters that WERE action oriented were intense and you could really feel the emotion and desperation of the Men of the West during, say the Battle of Pelennor Fields or how disappointed the Gondorians were when Dol Amroth only sent like 700 men to fight in a battle that, if lost, meant that Sauron would win, because they were scared of the Haradrim and the Umbar raiding their lands. While the lead up chapters were generally somewhat neglected or even outright wrong in the movies, they were still present and important to the overall story. It wasn't just an action flick.
      It was the literal opposite of say, the Chronicles of Narnia, where actual battles were almost completely skipped over. In Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the final battle of that book was less than two pages and basically amounted to "Peter almost died but then Aslan showed up out of nowhere and saved everyone's nuts." As a kid who saw the movie first, i was really really disappointed by the book, and it actually turned me off all the Narnia movies because of how different they were from the books.

I mean, I get that they might be more fleshed out in the movies but... Frankly its just bad movie making to have a big action scene and not show it in much detail, ya know? I dont even think thats unfaithful. Its honestly a bit nonsensical, I honestly think theres no possible movie you could have made that would have satisfied him, he'd say the same thing regardless just because it was popular.

    Hearing those building themes unlocked some dormant memories in my brain. I honestly loved this game when I was a kid

    Any chance you'll ever review 'Lord of the Rings: War in the North'?

      Speaking of Lord of the Rings games that got completely buried, War in the North came out 1 week before Skyrim.

      @@mike42192 Was it the one where you led a team of three and could play in co-op? If yes, it was generic shit

    9:05 Normally I'm good at understanding English but this?? "That's what happens why don't micro warg riders to get more fate points" ....what?

    • @jacksmith3148
      @jacksmith3148 7 месяцев назад +1

      Micro = micro-manage. As in play in a way that extracts the maximum value out of them. Warg Riders are a fast wolf-riding unit so by micromanaging them to take little damage, you can get more points that would've helped that situation

    7:42 I've just noticed this. "I've tried rebinding them, but the game doesn't seem to understand" as you click on cancel. Is there a visual joke I was missing or just a minor mistake?

    • @ngngye
      @ngngye 5 лет назад

      There was the weird flashing before that; otherwise, its just being used to CANCEL and OK left-right instead of right-left.

    I don't know if I'm the only one hearing it and also I know I'm terribly late, but isn't it the soundtrack from the videogame of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets that is playing at around 2:00? Love that music!

    It's so weird, if you had asked me if I've ever played this game, my answer would be no. But after watching this video, everything I see is super nostalgic and familiar. I must have played this game for months as a kid. I remember the buildings, the units, the slavers... It seems it was more memorable than expected.
