- History is written at every Open Championship. But few Opens have had a final day quite like The 145th Open at Royal Troon.
In 2016, Royal Troon saw its fair share of wonderful play alongside some of the most challenging weather conditions imaginable. But two beacons of golfing excellence would battle in a final day for the ages.
Henrik Stenson, The 2013 Open runner-up still searching for his first major was being challenged by Phil Mickelson, who won The 2013 Open.
Both players had flexed their considerable strength and finesse on the course during the opening three days. Separated by only one shot, these two titans would do battle on the final day. The prize - the coveted Claret Jug.
In a relentless display of competition, both athletes put on a masterclass of golfing excellence, so impressive that it took a record-breaking performance to crown a victor.
2016’s epic head-to-head deserves to be regarded as one of the greatest final days in Open Championship history.
