- See More Garden Goodies: www.WisconsinGarden.com - - - Thanks to many viewer requests, it’s time we did an indoor Avocado update before we venture out into our spring Wisconsin garden activities. We’ll be removing old plants and adding a couple of new seedlings to our indoor Avocado grove container. We grow them purely for pleasure rather than fruit production. Despite being located in our cathedral ceiling living room, we’ll need to prune and trim some leaves to keep them under control as best we can. With a little TLC they will continue to thrive as our house guest alongside other flowering plants that keep gardening alive and well the winter long.

In the wild avocados grows well among other plants and trees. I have a few young plants growing around the place, some cute some not. I don't know if mine will reach the fruiting stage but its okay. I just like having plants around me that reminds me of my childhood. Now, you two can try mango and pineapples, they are also fun to grow :)
+wildchook (Mary) - Would love to grow a lot of plants but nearly all of our window sills are taken, as well as, floor space in our living room. May have to move out of our bedroom and build an indoor greenhouse. Thanks for watching and sharing. Lynn & Richard
Lynn, can you please show us your lil bird, sometime? I lost my quaker, and really miss him. thank you, for your videos, love watching them.
+Sandy Sledge - We lost one of our cockatiels a couple of years ago after 21 years. Know how you feel. We will do our best to include "BB" in an upcoming video. Thanks for watching and sharing. Lynn & Richard
I just started a seed today, I live in Northern California and will be keeping it inside as well. Love the vids and subscribed also!
Welcome to our garden family and thanks for your kind words of support. We hope you weren't affected by those ravaging fires. Our eldest son is vacationing in New Port Beach this week. Rather than through these magical seed away, we enjoy growing them simply for their greenery. Seeing that we eat several avocados a week, we probably have at least half a dozen constantly on our kitchen window sill nursery at any given time. They make great gifts once rooted in a decorative pot when they are babies. Hope you have a chance to visit our www.WisconsinGarden.com website where we have over 800 free garden videos on a variety of timely topics. As we look out our windows, it's a white Christmas here in Wisconsin with temps around 17 degrees. From our garden to yours, Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year to you and your family. Lynn & Richard
My Sis n law lives over in Happy Camp. Beautiful place to live. The only problem is it is in CA. and that is to damn stupid of a liberal ass state for me. So I would never live in CA. again. I love my in-laws, they are wonderful.
They look good. You have a lot of them.

For the orchids they need a humidity tray also check the medium and some of them I see you have need to rest for the winter and then they grow and Bloom the coming season
Hi Victoria. In addition to the greenery our avocado seed bring to our indoor garden, it's always interesting to watch our orchids take a winter nap. When they bloom it's always delightful as are so many plants whether indoor or outdoor. Mother nature never disappoints. Thanks Victoria for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard
I have three Haas Avocado seeds started. Thanks for the information on the care of the plants. Maybe I'll get some to eat. What's your recipe for Guacamole?
+Nina Nina - We really don't grow the seed to develop into a fruiting tree. It's merely to keep the green alive inside our home during the gray cold winter days and night. Our avocados are used mainly as a side dish or included in all of our salads. Seeing that Richard changed too many diapers, he really can't stand to even look at Guacamole. Sorry. Thanks for watching and sharing. Lynn & Richard
+WisconsinGarden I see. ;-) I don't see Guacamole that way though. I like the trees though and will try growing them.
I have lots of new Avocado trees but I hear they won't make fruit unless they have been grafted! I stopped using the toothpicks. I just peal the skin off and soak them in water and sometimes I just plant the seeds no soaking!
One of the great things about gardening is that everyone has their own techniques. As mentioned, we only grow them for their greenery to enjoy indoors during the winter months. Thanks Pamela for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard
Ok cool! Thank you!
You're Welcome - Lynn & Richard
I've tried this too. I had a lovely sapling for a couple of months, but eventually I decided to take it out and throw it on the compost heap. It grew in an arch and was all spindly, didn't like the look of it. I might try again someday though.
+ty eres - They do get spindly but I just can't seem to throw away those healthy look avocado seeds. Thanks for watching and sharing. Lynn & Richard

I have so much difficulty with avocado trees, the leaves always turn brown and fall off when I transplant to soil.
We have had similar problems. Usually the leaves are good when we plant, but fall off in a couple of months. Lately we've been planting them in moist soil as soon as a shoot comes out the top, not waiting for leaves to appear. You might want to try that. Are you watering too much and roots are too wet? Are you watering too little maybe? Do they get direct sunlight all day? Wish we could be of more help. Keep starting the pits, hopefully you'll get some to grow once moved. Thanks for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn &
I still think you have way to many in one pot. What do your avocado trees look like now in February 2019?
Hi Rocky. As mentioned earlier, they are all doing perfectly fine, green, lush and healthy at about 5' in height. Think really tall Bonsai. TKS Lynn & Richard
@@WisconsinGarden I would really love to see a video of your 5 avocados trees. I am going to try and do the same thing but I think I will only do 2 to 3 in a pot. How many times have you changed pots to allow for more root growth? How many times have you topped them from growing taller? How far have the avocado's branched out beyond the orgirinal pot you put all 5 in? I also live in a Northern tier state. North Central North Dakota.
We will try to remember including them in a future indoor video. We rarely top any of our indoor trees. When replanting we only cut root back to keep them more bonsai shaped. We only remove leaves as needed. They have proven to be very tough and add lots of greenery in our living room. The cluster canopy only reaches out about 12-15." We also use 3 bamboo stakes for support and only water as needed. In the event that a seed tree dies, we simply replace it with another. TKS Lynn & Richard
How could I get them to fruit indoors? Could you send me an instruction guide I’d really appreciate it. I live in Jersey could I use LED or Fluorescent lights?
I believe we've mentioned that we don't grow them indoors for fruit. We simply enjoy getting the seed to sprout and enjoy their greenery in our living room for their delightful greenery. Having said that, it may be possible. I would think one would need greenhouse conditions with consistent moisture levels in the air and ground with plenty of sunlight for them to eventually flower. They you would have to become the pollinator. However, if the avocado seed you're growing came from a hybrid tree, it could be sterile and never flower. Once you crack the secret, you will become famous around the world. Keep us posted on your experiment. Thank you for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard
2 Peter 1: 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased".

can you grow avocados in Illinois. ??
+Tyler Savage - You can grow them anywhere as long as they are grown indoors in cold climates. We don't grow them for fruit, but purely for adding greenery in our living room. I just can't throw my seeds away so I try growing them with great success. Thanks for watching and sharing. Lynn & Richard
Like I said in one of your other videos, too many avacados in one container. You need to limit the amountin the container.
Thanks for your recommendation. Lynn & Richard
