I’ve killed two avocado trees that I feel so bad about but now that I know how to garden and about plants and trees in general I have one avocado tree that is alive and thriving in its second year in the ground. I’ve placed wood chips mulch since last year and has been thriving thereafter. I’m excited!!!

Very great job Jake. I'm originally from a tropical country. I eat avocado since when I was a young kid, but I only heard about guacamole when i'm already here in the U.S.. In my country, we use avocado for shakes and smoothies, or we also add other kind fruits. my favorite combination is avocado and mango. My American husband loves it.

Great job Jake! They are gorgeous...We had a huge avacado in the corner of our property when i was growing up but sadly aa a child never ate avacado...what a waste. Making up for it now as I have 7 organic seeds toothpicked and waiting for rooting to begin.

Jake -Avos looking good - Keep mulch away from trunk - do you give zinc every 2 years & gypsum? They like that here in Oz. Dont take flowers off as if they set will drop what they dont want or cant hold naturally - I have custard apples this year maybe first time in Melbourne )now size of billiard ball and Sapodillas now size of a pea - so cool

Great job on those trees. Avocados can be more difficult than other trees. I have three currently doing well and growing like crazy with the summer heat in Florida. I have a Simmons (type a), Brogdon (type b), and a Choquette (type a), which you had a video on. Thanks for your very valuable tips for successful gardening. Maybe soon I'll start my video vlog on my ever growing food forest.

sealuva I only went to Florida once in my life and didn't get to try many avocados. I hear they are a little different than our California ones. I also heard they do better in the CA soil vs the FL which has less clay. but still I think it's cool they have so many varieties we don't have here. Idk why but I think California is terrified of unchecked crops coming in and spreading diseases to what we have already. Agriculture in California is serious business.

    • @RichAlvaradoDR
      @RichAlvaradoDR 7 лет назад +1

I hear ya Col. Cotton Hill. Mending the soil is the key to growing most things here as we have very sandy soil. Florida has lost tons of citrus crops due to diseases. I have some citrus growing and keep a close eye on them. The avocados down here are awesome, they just don't ship as well as the California Haas, but off the tree they taste amazing.

It's Arizona--specifically Phoenix that has a bit of a problem for Avocado, to a lesser extent Tucson although Tucson is a bit cooler in summers. Mexicola grow well in Tucson with 50% shade cloth in June/July/Aug and if in pot and given distilled or RO water for 2 weeks on alternating with tap or all the time. All brown tips disappeared on my Mexicola when I started doing distilled water, we have too much chlorine in Tucson water literally burns the plant.

How much do you irrigate and what's the soil like, avacado being tropical need lots of water and are used to deep soil. AZ being arid I would think would have neither of these, can you address how you've compensated? Mounding, amending irrigating, etc? Has salinity been an issue from irrigating a lot? Or is the species adapted to your climate and non of these are factors...?

Avocado trees LOVE the cold. They are originally from the highlands of Mexico and they grow better between 4,000 and 7,000 ft above the sea. Shade is important during their growing stage, but, they do ok during the sunny months. TONS of water is essential for their grow. I never heard of avocado growing in desert conditions. Yours looks great. They usually grow very fast in the cold and foggy mountains of central Veracruz (Mex). I'd probably try to shade it a bit more. Good luck. Great work. Cheers. Q: What kind of avocado tree is?

My mom had a giant (scorpion infested) avocado tree when she lived in Arizona. You don't need shade once established. I would say the difference between the two trees is actually your pond. It creates a micro climate which is more humid. More moisture in the air means more moisture available and less stress on the plant.
Growing my own micro food forest in Utah....any suggestions?
I currently have two lemon and two lime trees that I salvaged from walmart's plant graveyard for a few bucks. Brought them inside for the winter and they are well enough to have set fruit (45 blossoms on one lemon plant, about 10 on the other...bloomed with our first big snow.)
With the lime tree pushing out its first bloom and a few avocado seeds actually sending out new growth, I gotta admit I am out of my depth but curious to try something new .
What do you suggest to add?
And I am sure they cant thrive in peat moss forever but they cant stay in the ground during our winter.....any suggestions for conditioning the soil? Oh, and the native soul is straight clay(made little pots as a kid and sun baked them on the fence, held water well enough) do you have any suggestions for summertime amendments?

You might of heard of lucuma before but in case you haven't, it tastes like maple syrup with a canistel fruit type texture and although being sweet it has no effect on your blood sugar levels. Have you seen the little turtle that you rescued a few months back? You put him in your pond, but you haven't mentioned him since. I saw Leo and that made me think of the other little turtle.

do you plan on pruning it to keep it small?

I think it'd be cool if you interplanted veggies, low lying edible shrubs, and herbs around your tree trunks. Create a poly culture just to see how much more food you can grow in a limited space 👍
Visited a backyard avocado orchard in Southern California once at the peak of ripeness and was gifted some fruits. I so want to a couple of avocado trees! Wonder if they'd do well in Sacramento... 🥑

grab a cheap chalk marker from your local michaels store, and crack it open and drop the contents into a water bottle. With this mixture, spray your tree until you get a protective chalky film on it. You might need to protect from your harsh AZ sun.
    The trees look great BTW.

the chalk particles are very tiny and go through the spray bottle easily. And since most chalk markers are erasable when dry, they don't clog up the sprayer.
