  • This is an experiment. I pinched off the tip of one of the avocado trees I started from seed to keep it small...here's what happened in the following three weeks. There'll be more videos on this in the future.

So nice it looks beautiful the way it branched. I just potted mine out of water and I’m just waiting for it to get comfortable in the soil before I prune it because I know potting can be a stressful experience to the plant but I’m gonna try this maybe in a week or two.

Well this is the best documentary I have seen on Avocado trees to date because your plant is a little bit further on it's path than mine. As many others, I started mine with the tooth-pick method and only today I put it into a pot.
My leaves are smaller than yours, but I have 4 at the top. I'm wondering when the right time is to prune for the first time. Also, do you prune at an angle? Sorry, I'm a newbie but I am so interested in nature and plant life.
Lastly, what are you indoor surroundings like? I live in London and we have very warm Summer and then your typical British winters. Is it mostly important to keep the plant next to the window with sunlight coming through? Should I put the plant outdoor when it's warm? I know......a lot of questions but I am very interested.
Thanks again for your lovely video

KinkyMelinky Hi! Thank you for the compliment!
Now, I am not an expert on this at all, so take anything I write with a grain of salt.
From what I have gathered on youtube/the internet, the right time to prune is when the leaves are still half transparent and the stem easily bendable. You could probably prune at a later point in time too, but if you want to keep them small, this might be the way to go.
I picked a very laissez-faire approach to angles when pruning, and there hasn't been any trouble. My guess is the plant doesn't care. However, some people say it's best to just gently pinch off the very tip of the new growth on top of the avocado tree, so consider that.
In my experience, avocado trees love being outside. I actually took two trees outside this summer and the other two stayed inside for two months longer. The difference is striking (there will be a video on this soon). However, keep an eye on them outside, blackflies seem to love them.
Winter will be a challenge. I live in Germany in a regular flat (no fancy giant indoor greenhouses or anything) and worry about the toll the dry air will take on the plants. A lot of light is a must, definitely, but other than that, I'm clueless...ask me again next year ;)
Another point to consider: If you want to try to get fruit (extremely unlikely, but, hey, one can dream), it's best to grow two trees. Avocados flower in a way that most often prevents pollination if there is only one tree around.
Good luck with your avocado tree, keep me updated if you like, it'd be interesting to see how somebody in a similar climate fares with this. And don't worry, I love questions :)

I recently put my avocado plant in soil & the minute I did that all 4 leaves gradually turned brown and died. My other avocado lost 3 leaves when I transplanted it for the first time but it's thriving now. What can I do to save my avocado? It looks terrible & there's no new growth.

Asya Ivanova Sorry its a bit late, but if you ever want to grow acocados again be sure to slowly add soil a little each day to the original glass of water it is in so you dont shock or stress the plant. In nature, the plant grows its root until it hits soil under the water, so it naturally gets used to soil. You must replicate this process so you dont shock and kill the plant

Looking for some help. Grown my avocado tree from a seedling in a pint glass at university. Fell in love with it so much I brought it home and have cared for it ever since. 2 years on and it’s been a cold winter here in England. I keep it inside but some of it’s leaves are turning brown and falling off. It’s leaves are also becoming quite crisp. I check it’s soil regularly and it’s quite damp but the top layer has this peculiar white mould on it. Was wondering if anyone could give me some advice to keep him healthy and hopefully outlive me?

I grow my plant on a table in my workplace (a school) and when I returned from a 10 day vacation, the leaves were brown and shriveled from the unexpectedly hot, bright sunshine we had while I was away. I was sad, but I kept taking care of it and new leaves came out within a few weeks and now it's a big (almost 3 feet tall) healthy plant. The mold could be from overwatering or too much moisture. Do you have a terracotta or plastic pot?

How is your avocado plant doing now? Mine is still in the water stage but it's slowing growing. There was so mushroomy things growing on the roots and I panicked thinking it was rot so I scrapped it off. I am afraid I might have shocked the poor plant even more. I hope I didn't just kill it.

      @WindowsillGardening  10 лет назад +1

First off, kudos for getting your tree to grow this tall at all, that's pretty amazing considering it's indoors!
I'm no expert, but all of my avocado trees (I have 4 of them growing right now, but all of them are less than a year old) have reacted nicely to pruning, so I guess you don't have to worry about your tree getting issues after you prune it.
However, it seems like avocado trees aren't suited to be kept as bonsais - I've read that they need to grow a lot before their stems start to thicken. I'd say just try it, and post a video on youtube, I'm sure many people would be interested in seeing such a tall avocado tree kept indoors.
This probably isn't of much help to you - hoping somebody else with more experience chimes in soon! :)

I need a bit of advice from all the avacado ppl out there. My avacado has seemed to sprouted 3 stems. I have no idea what to do. I am very tempted to just twist or braid them together and wrap them with that stretchy wrap. Any advice. :(

Wow, I'm jealous! I grew my avocado from a seed back in March (it's September now) and it's probably about as big as yours. I definitely need to figure out what I'm doing wrong...

Emjay From what I've learned, how much they grow also depends on the seed itself...there are lots of different types of Avocados and some of them don't grow as strongly/quickly. So it might not be you :)
In my experience, the really important part in the early stages is PLENTY of sunlight. I "experimented" by putting 2 avocado trees outside and leaving the other two inside on the windowsill where they got sun for about half of the day. It made a real difference.
Thanks for your comment, and keep me updated if you like!

Does anyone know why my plant has the very top leaves a little bit red?

Would anybody know why mine only has 3 leaves, then those three leaves dry out and die and three more pop up?This has happened more than 10 times

great video! I'm going to try pruning mine for the first time now.
Can you (or anyone here) please recommend the best type of soil mix for avocado?

morebeauty Hello and thank you! I put my Avocado into some kind of regular soil I bought at the supermarket. Really nothing special. I read that for the first few months, soil is not that important, since they feed off the seed. I guess some research is in order after that! Have you found your answer already?

Will my tree still grow higher when I pruned it or does it stay the same size and just expands to the side? Does anyone know?

    • @vastya.3255

the plant always grows higher, with pruning it’ll expand to the side by creating new branches and leaves at the place where you pruned

pinch off the top three or four leaves but try not to get too much of the stem. Just the leaves. In about 3 or 4 weeks you should notice some real improvement.
