i have an '90 toyota hilux surf that i drove a few years ago from southern california up to northern alberta. A coolant hose broke in northern idaho (the middle of nowhere), on sunday afternoon with almost no cell service. We had no water or tools with us. I was able to get someone to come out 40 miles from the closest town for a tow and he got us back to the o'reilly's 30 minutes before closing. I bought 1 foot of hose, a pair of pliers and some coolant. We fixed it in the parking lot and were back on the road, only a couple hours behind schedule. I know exactly the feeling you must have had when all that steam blasted out (except for the part where 50 000 people would be watching). Those are the things that make a trip memorable, and thats why we drive the old stuff.

But the best thing in the US is, that whenever you are in a town, no matter how small it is, there is at least a Napa autoparts store then. 😃👍We lived in Michigan for almost 10 years and drove out West every summer in our Jeep. When we visited Utah and Cali this August, we went to a O'Reillys for the first time. 👍🙋‍♀️

Brilliant! Just did body off LR4, replaced turbos, new air intakes, new oil pump, new water pump, vacuum hoses, coolant hoses, and 5w 40, new brake pipes whilst the body was off, body back on and guess what, thought the cross over pipe was leaking and so, body back off, it turned out to be a crack in the EGR exhaust pipe and so new egr and pipe fitted.. body back on and so far, all is well, fingers crossed 😅

Vera you have just demonstrated why to a large extent only a Landrover can undertake a journey like that. Certainly no alternative make of vehicle at 17 years is likely to be viable. Wise to have taken your mechanic also! Good luck with the transfer box and a great show. You may also read that insuring a landrover in the UK is becoming a big big expensive problem, because car thieves always find ways to hack into them, strip the cars and sell the parts. LR are recalling some to fit more robust anti theft devices.

One trick that I learned while overheating in the Pyrenees a few years ago, is while stationary and waiting for the heat levels to drop, turn on the interior heating controls to maximum to bleed heat away from the engine. Christion, I do enjoy you both with your attitude to life. When you were explaining how to reply to a customer Machine breakdown, a good engineer has to have a very good problem-solving mind. It's a thing clever/ good engineers have. Ask to pinpoint the root cause before thinking of a remedy to cure the problem. Of course, another way is thinking to yourself SHIT what are we going to do next, but, one's mind whirrs like a computer In search mode until a possible cure is thought of. LOL. Owning any Landrover that you fix yourself is like flying for the first time> You know it works but need good thoughts to ensure It continues to work. A broken plane is no good at 30.000 feet (OK lots of KMs) LOL Each new episode I wonder what comes first, a bit like the chicken or the egg. Thanks for the Tech but more Importantly the humour. Ian. Thank you, Christian and Vera, for taking us on this LR3 rebuilt journey. Very well edited, entertaining and educational at the same time.
Now to the rattle in the transfer case. Could a superbly and beyond factory spec build engine have contributed to expose the remaining weak links in this vehicle? Assuming a factory flexing crankshaft never did expose the slop in the transfer case.
When I replaced the engine on my 1989 Chevrolet C2500 with 74k miles with a brand new $1,600 GM Goodwrench engine due to low compression on one cylinder, I did renew every coolant hose, sensor and accessories because of reliability was of utmost importance while traveling long distance for work. However, GM redesigned the coolant hose attachment to the heater matrix with snap lock style plastic connector which I didn't replace. Guess what happened next? That piece broke in the middle between Cody, Wyoming and Ft. Collins, Colorado and luckily stopped me at the base of an uphill run. Fortunately, a trooper passed by and radioed a tow to the nearest Chevrolet dealership in Lander, WY. I believe it was still between 50-100 miles from the junction I broke down to the dealership.
The moral of my story is, you can try to do the best, but if you don't replace every aged part in an essential system which keeps you going, most likely it will fail at the most inconvenient place possible. I hope the coolant hose clamp fail didn't cause irreversible damage to the overall effort.

What a great trip, makes me envious of all the history you have to see there. Over the years I lost count of the number of times I had to top up from a mountain stream. When I built my own Turbo-diesel Series 109, I didn't get the cooling right, so I had to stop frequently on trips into the mountains to let things cool. The altitude and road grades really test your vehicle. Glad you had a good trip and I hope you have nice clean oil at the end of it.

Gorgeous views! I love that you were able to just figure out the coolant issue. When my '06 LR3 HSE got a coolant leak on a trail, we limped it down (fortunately, it had been uphill the whole way until then), and then towed it to Land Rover. We were able to get the hose fixed on the trail, but couldn't get the coolant to circulate. The Land Rover mechanics said it required a special device they have to get it circulating again, and that it couldn't have been fixed on the trail.

    • @Vera_and_Christian

I was surprised by how much the German autobahn looks like the Canning stock route.

Absolutely convinced that the next gap in the used Land Rover market is about to be filled, Discovery 3 and 4 are superb cars Iam sure someone will set up re building these 4x4 similar to all the Defender specialist that re build currently.
Massive market for a fully re built 3 or 4 in my opinion.
Such a versatile and suprisingly econimical vehicle for its size and capabilities.
Unfortunately our 2008 Disco 3 overheated at the entrance to Mont Blanc Tunnel in the Summer !! We hired a Kia to finish our Journey to Geneo Cannes and Barcelona did a loop on the way back filled the disco with Evian and drove back to UK in the Disco in one hit.
Incredible car we panicked too soon I think and have done 4500 miles no prblems since.

Judging by your sense of humor, I'm convinced that both you guys are actually English. I suspect that you are both originally from Wolverhampton and in fact you're just very good at faking an excellent German accent!😂. Best channel, best people, best content on all of RUclips . No question.

Great shakedown run - ofcourse you guys were soo well prepared to resolve as much as you could with what you had. Looks like a bit of drivetrain investigation and you guys will be home free. Looks forward to the next video hopefully sorting out a few snags 👍

Driving in Australia is pretty much the same speeds, 100klm. And 110klm/h but for excitement they switch it to 90klms just to keep you on your toes..

Good afternoon Vera & Christian 😊 Nothing better before I go to work watching your test drive in Vera’s LR3 after your amazing 🤩 rebuild Christian 👍🏻 What a beautiful trip with amazing views and of corse a cooked steak 🥩 from Vera 🤣 Unbelievable that the only issues was a hose clamp and the EGR valve 🤔 I’m
sure it’ll make a great video fix the transfer case 😊 So until next week take care and hug and kisses for Vera so she’ll be happy 😘 xx
