Crankshaft Sensor and Trigger Wheel - Land Rover Discovery - Fault P0336 / S4-Ep50

- Опубликовано: 12 сен 2024
- In this episode, we repair a defect crankshaft position sensor and trigger wheel on a 2009 Land Rover Discovery 3 with a 2.7L TDV6 engine. The vehicle runs only in limp mode and throws a P0336-66 fault code.
Also check out his video with a similar repair.
• No Engine Start after ...
Technical data:
Trigger wheel and sensor install of 2.7L TDV6 and 3.0L SDV6 engine:
Offset of trigger wheel from dowel location to trigger wheel hole is 110.5° CW when viewed in driving direction from back side of engine.
Insertion dept of the trigger wheel is 3.66 mm +-0.4 mm with max axial TIR of 0.4 mm, measured from the shoulder of the crank to the trigger wheel.
The sensor gap is 0.4 mm to 1.5 mm max.
The trigger wheel delivers 60 - 2 tooth pattern. The missing theeth represent 12° of crankshaft rotation. The reference point is 21° BTDC.
See our Patreon Page for a screen shot of the correct shape of the trigger wheel signal.
Note that the crankshaft sensor uses a 5V supply and ground and provides a output signal connected to a 4.7 k Ohm pull up resistor inside the ECU. If measured in a test setup without the pull up resistor, the output voltage is less and looks wrong. Install a 4.7K Ohm resistor to see the correct output.
Connect the scope to the wiring harness above the LH ECR Valve to get the crankshaft sensor signal:
Ground = Brown with red tracer
Signal = White with red tracer
+5V = Yellow with red tracer
Note that some color combinations are present multiple times in the harness.
ECU will only trigger a fault once the engine starts. No-start no-fault. Engine must also read the cam shaft sensor and will take one crankshaft revolution to sync. If no cam shaft signal is present or faulty, engine will remain in limp mode with reduced power and fault will be logged by the ECU.
Part number of trigger wheel: LR005254 (Price at LR in 10-2023 was 156 Euro)
Part Number Bosch Sensor: BOSCH 0986280437

You really are becoming an expert diagnostic technician ,love your videos, Vera and yourself are great together.
Your very lucky to have a wife that loves cars the same as you.
Anyone driving a Landrover becomes an expert at fixing them....
Exceptional as always, if Landrover ever enter Formula 1 they should employ you guys as their pit team. 😊
If they ever enter Le Mans, it would need to be a 24 minute race!
Discovery sport or evoque as a safety car and Range Rover vogue as a medical call
That wud be nice
This video made me realize that you could open a full time Land Rover repair shop with only about five customers! Thanks for the Sunday laughs!
Great idea as you could invite all your customers to the works Christmas party 🤣🤣
My favourite LR channel by far…I don’t even own a Land Rover and never will…great content,Merry Christmas from the UK 🇬🇧 ❤
Iam in the exact same boat, fascinating to watch, especially while our kia rio sits outside on the drive fully functioning.
Another brilliant repair. I’m always impressed by your skills when creating tools and would be interested to see what you would do with a laser engraver. Have a very Happy Christmas 🎄
dont know why I watch your videos I haven't got a lr nor will I ever have one ,but still love watching your videos 😊
Are there any houses for sale near you ? Because if I ever have one of these cars I will have to live near you to get it fixed properly ,you are better than any stealership 😅
Australian here. Just love the personality and no BS approach. I’ve been a mechanic by trade for nearly 10 years, not often I will click on a JLR video and enjoy it!
Vabian is very lucky to have friends that do miracles keeping Land Rover running!!
Tell me about it. That car would have been at the dealership for months with thousands of dollars wasted in diagnostic time.
That tip, about putting lube on the connector so it will slide into the connector, is an excellent one. I've used that same procedure for years. As an auto tech, I've worked with multiple dozens of mechanics and you're the only other person I've ever seen use this step. You guys do great work. Thanks for the videos. Thumbs up!
Ahh, my favourite Sunday morning viewing, thanks to you both.
Well, if I ever have enough of my Toyota LC's (not likely at all 😂) and buy a disco(Also not likely at all, I used to own Land Rovers!) I'll come over from Australia and have it serviced and fixed by you two people. Bloody brilliant diagnoses and proper fix. Obviously, lots of knowledge garnered.
Hope he has no more problems for a long time.(also Unlikely but there has to be hope😊.) Seriously though great job.
If you drill some holes in your crankshaft reluctor wheel fitting tool you could use flywheel bolts with spacer or similar to pull the crank sensor reluctor into position. Holes would be slightly bigger of course to allow for adjustment. You know this job now and so do we thank you. Nice to know you have a talking workshop manual now😀. Great teamwork.
god bless you guys- this diagnosis is insane given the level of electrical complexity.
Just happy to see land rover content without people constantly crapping on them.....we need more people like you in the world
Thanks
My wife was cooking sunday dinner and looking at me strange as I had my tape measure out… ‘what are you doing now’? … ‘I am measuring up for my kitchen lathe’… dinner is now in the dog 🤦♂️
Lol 😂 👍🏆
Just to correct Vera, you dont need all those specialist tools and lathes and milling machines, in Fabian's case he just needs you guys 😄👍great job and so good to see and hear Fabian's engine sounding so good too. Have a great Christmas guys🎄
It's busted, OMG! What a debacle! Love it!
The 1500 RAM 3 liter ECO Diesel has the same problem and Fait has a recall on that issue. Instead of replacing the trigger wheel they reprogram the ECU to not need the trigger wheel and instead it only uses the camshaft sensors.
Just a delight to watch you guys, you are both brilliant, I'm staggered by your ingenuity and determination. Would you like to move to Scotland ?😂. We need you 🤣👍, thanks for an amazing channel. Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄
Thanks to you guys, I am finally a LR3 owner! I just purchased an 08 LR3 SE. I am currently working through some suspension and HDC faults but I couldn’t be happier with the purchase.
Oh that is so great. Congratulations, hope you can get your faults resolved. If you need help, we have a Patreon tier where you can get help from Christian. 👍🙋♀️
@@Vera_and_Christian I will check it out! Thank you very much!
Comgrats! Now just make sure that the Gap Tool is your christmas present to yourself!!!
@@vincentcorreia5714 absolutely! Saving up for it hahaha. Man, I haven’t drive the LR3 a long distance and I’m already loving it!
You may not like it but I look forward to you suffering breakdowns and wish you had many more , love seeing you finding and fixing faults . Merry Christmas and happy new breakdowns.
😅👍Wait for our newest addition. We have already suffered our fair share. 🙋♀️
Used to watch you channel from time to time simply because how you guys get stuck in and take on anything. In the last week I bought an L494 Autobiography so will be watching your channel even more now!
never watched this channel before. i find it informative and entertaining as well as a warning of owning a landrover. sometimes thing are just made way too complicated.
Hello Ken, these vehicles are easier to fix than most Audi, Mercedes and BMW in the upper class. This repair was caused by us by installing a aftermarket part 2 years back. Hope you will follow our channel. Christian
Bloody Awesome once again.. I've got a 2003 V8 D2. a lot less hassle than a D3. You guys are such an inspiration. I'd love to have the set up you have. Merry Christmas to you and all your family from Australia 🇦🇺
Fantastic job. I did wonder if Land Rover should be sponsoring you.
I'm sure Fabians help was most welcome with this job along with Vera.
The only reason JLR would sponsor this channel is to borrow their ingenious self-made tools!
@@Paulie44 Have to agree. Christians genius shines when working on these vehicles.
great video, car was happy that it got fixed - so showed its appreciation by driving better
You might as well open a LR repair shop at this stage!
Oh no, no, no, no. 😅 This was a 2 day repair which you enjoyed in 20 min. Just imagine how much we would charge you if that was an actual paid repair. 🙋♀️
@@Vera_and_Christian Exactly why you need to open a shop! 😉
Having the same trouble on my TDV6 HSE which won’t to start at all anymore. I cross thumbs that it isn’t the same sensor as it would cost a fortune at a garage in Germany to fix that… thanks for the great video and knowledge you present as well as your commitments towards these wonderful excellent and simultaneously painful cars!
Oh boy, have you had an aftermarket trigger wheel installed previously? We have only heard of failures of the triggerwheels of aftermarkt sensors installed after an engine rebuild, not ever from the OEM failure one. Also check out our failed engine start from my Discovery 3 here ruclips.net/video/FvHjOyMP_PU/видео.htmlsi=oPCNJmoZgpiLbEyc We show how to check for all the sensors, involved in starting the engine. There are not many unfortunately. 👌🙋♀️
@@Vera_and_Christian thank you kindly for your answer and advice. I definitely going to have a look. It seems that I have had a visitor a marten. It might have bitten some connections or cables. We will see if that was the case. Thanks again for your great work and passion towards such great vehicles. Greetings from up north!
Everyone with a Land rover will need to move closer to you. A Merry Christmas from the UK.
The man is an exceptional engineer supported by a thrilled wife. OMG I have watched many videos and enjoyed all of them
😅👍🙋♀️
Great video, interesting point raised by Vera.. how many D3’s have been scrapped/broken/sold off cheap because of this poor quality part? It’s only £50 difference in price between 5h!tpart and OEM/LR so why not spend the extra?
Why not save the £50 as its just the same thing. Right ?
Wrong. Very wrong 😮
The scraping of vehicles for a few £'s is getting ridiculous. To much tech and not enough industry knowledge.
You guys are awesome. Nothing beats the LR TIME driveway repair shop. Merry Christmas Christian Vera & family
😊👍🙏 Merry Christmas to you guys too.🙋♀️
All i can say your knowledge and expertise and capabilities are " tops " . The intelligent approach to the repairs - " wow " .
Yet again another job " done and dusted " . Yes having the lathe ( to make " special tools " ) , ext make it easier , but " tools " do not make a " good " mechanic / technician or repair .
Every detail , cleanliness ect ect and SPECIFICATIONS - and attention to detail - even storing parts , nuts and bolts whilst " stripping " LEAVING NOTHING TO CHANCE .
Above comments ARE NOT just for most recent vidio
Fabian you are one lucky fellow
Absolutely right. Thanks 😃👍🙏🙋♀️
ITS LR TIME😊😊😊brillant episode.home engineered tool.very educational episode.you made the repair look so easy.till the next episode enjoy your week😊😊😊😊
Hope Land Rover and Brit Parts are watching, awesome. Power to the people👍🇬🇧🏴
I hope Brit part watches too. But that is highly unlikely, we are just too small of a channel. 😅👍🙋♀️
Happy 3rd advent from Wiesbaden to everyone and especially Vera & Christian and their family. Great content and explanations as always long live the LR 3"s! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Merry Christmas to you too. 😃🎅🎄🙋♀️
I had a disco 3 from new and did 160000 miles on the clock. Appart from from the normal front suspension issues, ushes etc,I only had to change the battery and aldnater at 90000.perhaps I'm just lucky.
A Disco 3 is the superior Discovery, especially once the reinforced oilpump and frequent oilchanges. 👍💪🙋♀️
This happens on some BMW petrol engines too with manual gearboxes, caused by excessive endfloat on the crankshaft even with a genuine trigger wheels after designers decided only half a typical thrust bearing is required. This wore prematurely causing endfloat which allowed the trigger wheel to hit the rear cover at speed when changing gear, breaking off pieces like in this video - an expensive recall for BMW.
Another brilliant video great work guys
Can't belive the two crankshaft sensor issues were so close together! On the plus side, it must be a great feeling to have all those German made Muth tools©handy ready to use! Thanks for the mention at the end 😁
Pretty sure I saw a Proxxon torque wrench in there too. Love those tools.
yes, and it failed yesterday.🙄🙋♀️
Good evening Vera & Christian 😊 Nice seeing you fix Fabian’s LR 👍🏻😍
Super video again. When you enjoy and share - you are truly living your best life! Very enjoyable episode!
Lov3 watching your videos on Sunday morning, my wife and I have a lazy Sunday morning in bed after a long working week, just waiting for the day you get a freelander 2 , but I enjoy watching regardless of what LR i have. Very envious of your workshop / person cave 😂 ,
My old Freelander 1 was just in yesterday for a new starter motor. He also still gets special treatment from us. Unfortunately, the Freelander 2 is too small for my needs right now, and the insurance and tax is the same as for a Discovery here in Germany. That is also why we sold the Freelander, and nobody watched our Freelander content unfortunately. 👍🙋♀️
Merry Christmas Christian Vera & family. I watch this channel because it inspires me to keep hanging on to my D3. When it is running it is a great car, I have not found a better replacement that ticks all the boxes. This year I renewed my CPS when I changed my clutch. I would not have thought about doing it if it was not for your no nonsense practical approach to engineering. Best wishes from Soest DE
The good thing Cristian is… that being a landrover fan you will have a constant source of videos for RUclips👍👍
My favourite LR channel, so informative.
You are a better tech than most off the dealers ,,my discovery 3 was reliable over the 5years ,,1 hand brake module, suspension, module,, drive selector, module,, usual wish bones,,70, thousand miles,,but it never left us stranded ☘️☘️☘️☘️BLRC in northern Ireland,,sorted out the,,module issues,, normal service me ,, Happy New year 😊😊mine was a manual box
Great job never a doubt you got it in one ,just love watching you guys
It amazes me how variable the power output of each Discovery 3 can be.
When you have a good one that seems to have a lot of power, all other Disco’s without that power can seem very disappointing to drive.
I cannot find any reasonable explanation as to why they can seem so variable. My first thought is an EGR problem, but this cannot be when you have one like mine, with a similar age and mileage to Vera’s that has always had lots of power and never had an EGR problem.
My problem being that nearly every other, but not all D3’s I have ever driven, feels like they have a sock in the exhaust!
I just hope that without the lavish care and attention that Vera’s and Fabian’s D3’s have had, mine keeps going under the misguided assumption that ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!’
Well done on another superb fix of Fabian’s vehicle.
With all the modern vehicle sensors etc you'd think that performance would be standard for each unit produced.
But maybe it is literally down to something as simple as a clonk clonk position sensor being fitted badly in the factory ?
Fabian has a 2009 Euro 4, so not all parts are the same as in mine, a Euro 3 from 2006.👍🙋♀️
The best thing that Sunday brings - excellent as ever ... just when you run out of work to show ... along comes Fabian 😁
We never ever run out of content. 😅👍i already have another long list for Christian🙋♀️
@@Vera_and_Christian OMG 😁 .. and some more trips I hope - I enjoy them just as much
Oh I can just imagine your words off camera when you figured it out....... Great detective work as always.
Wow! (as usual). Sorry, but as I don't have a local Christian and Vera, I'm definitely getting a Toyota...
More seriously, this video is extremely informative as well as entertaining.
Many thanks and happy holidays!
You have that down to a fine art with all the practice in the past.
Merry Christmas and happy new year to you, and another great video many thanks.
Hi Guys, Excellent content as ever, with such humor.
And once again another brilliant video for a Sunday morning viewing. Great work as always to both of you.
Just one question for you, what style/make of headlights does Fabian have on his D3 please as I’d like to upgrade the ones I’ve got in mine. Thank you in advance for your help with this too 👍🏼
Love the German accent, it adds a sense of precision engineering that would otherwise be unheard of in a Land Rover.
Just another fantastic sunday morning coffee I ran down to the donut shop it just made the morning even better than normal with you 2 +1 today . Happy trails
Fabian is one lucky chap to have good, knowledgeable handy friends like Vera and Christian. Another job performed with "German precision", well done. "Buy a Land Rover, more a full time hobby than a means of transport."
You can't beat having good test gear, again Team LR well done.
Excellent work - Christian and Vera .
Your (highly enjoyable) videos are all I need to dissuade me from ever trying to work on my own Disco 4. Happily, it has yet to break, despite being well and truly in the Death Zone.
Keep up your oilchanges so you do your part that it may stay that way. 👍👌💪🙋♀️
Let me know when you are in Mallorca next - I have a noise I want you to listen to!! Another great episode - thanks.
LOL, yes no problem. Looking forward to it 👍. Christian
I have just started following your channel, your knowledge is absolutely brilliant. I'm a x landrover mechanic many moons ago 🤣. You explain everything in detail so good. I love to see a video of you in bad humour 😂😂 you're always very happy doing your work. I'm thinking of buying a Disco 4 because I love them. Happy Christmas guys from Niall here in cold Ireland. 🇮🇪🎄🎄🎄
😅👍Please do so, they are the best. 🙋♀️
Another brilliant repair. I’m always impressed by your skills when creating tools and Diagnostic tools for fault finding, Hope you both have a Happy Christmas to you both.🌲
Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year, I have enjoyed watching many of your extremely useful & accurate videos. You make car mechanics fun and the chemistry/humour between your wife and you is hilarious. Keep it up.
😊🙏🙋♀️Vera
Next time Fabian turns up on his motorbike I would pretend to be out/ill. What in incredible skill set you have;, brain surgeon and cow farmer. Those trigger wheels are pesky little blighters. I’m feeling tired just watching this.
German engineers are the best ,they do everything right.loving the videos
Great video - I always look forward to seeing your updates each Sunday... they just get better and better. I have had Land Rovers for a long time now - currently a 'Princess' as a 'Queen' must be an Autobiography and being a cheap guy, I have a Vogue SE. However, my wife collects her new Discovery Sport tomorrow - another Land Rover in our household. I only hope we have some reliability as I cannot imagine my wife underneath a car!
Its a treasure to have a friend who can help with your car like Cristian.
You guys upgraded from Engineer to Mechanic 🙌🏽
Another great video Christian. Pleasure to watch.
Servus out of Africa, Jo'burg. I did that exact same job a few years back and it took 15 minutes.
On my 2005 Jeep TJ. 🙂Down side is that now my Jeep is a Fait. 😕
Somehow, I don't believe you. 😅👍🙋♀️
On a TJ Jeep you just undo 1 screw to replace the part. 🤣And it's right there, on the side of the engine. It did though, take 4 days to get the Fiat part from the dealer.@@Vera_and_Christian
Knowledge is key and you have it in abundance. Great video yet again
Another great job and not even the rain stops you.
Another great video guys 👍. I hope Fabian has a good trip to Africa, and back!! See you next week!
I dread to think what a JLR dealership would have charged for this repair.
It would take JLR several weeks to diagnose the problem first!
JLR would want to change the engine.
I doubt anyone at JLR knows what an oscilloscope is!
Land Rover would have installed a new engine for 25000€ 2 years ago. Remember, the fact that there was a new Trigger wheel installed resulted from the engine failure this Disco had 2 years ago. There is no reason, almost ever, to replace a Triggerwheel unless you have to take it off for some reason. 👍🙋♀️
Very good mechanics! I am sure that they are most grateful in life for having people actually purchase a Land Rover! ha
Hahaha….i saw my first new body range rover the other day…..beautiful thing to see…..it was on the back of a recovery truck being taken 160 miles to the closest LR DEALER…..if they worked as good as they look i would have a new one. I owned two classics an 89 and a 92 LSE and both were great and never failed me .
Hi there Christian and Vera I wish you both and the 2 boys a Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year .
Ralph in the UK
Thank you Ralph, Merry Christmas. 😊🎄🎅🙋♀️
Thank you - I now know exactly why I chose a 50 year old Triumph Stag as my “fun” car
Once again you prove to be amazing. Christian the LR3's best friend.
Always a wonderful sense of humour 😂
This channel is so much better than the Toyota Oil Changes channel.
The way every mechanic should be 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I was considering buying a-L3 L4 very soon im starting to doubt it now
I hope Santa brings me a lathe for my kitchen this year. 🎅
This video is a great example of how valuable experience is. Sometimes experience comes at the cost of a lot of pain, but once you have it, it is invaluable. Fabian is really fortunate to have you guys.
I thought Fabian was going to cross Asia. Now he's going to Africa??
😲
It's warmer in Africe than it is in Mongolia right now. 😅👍Merry Christmas🙋♀️
T,hanks for another good video got to say you have got these landrovers coverered for anything that can fail now great team work and good content
Excellent job as usual Christian, Vera!! I must say I'm a bit concerned about the amount of play in that output shaft. I can't believe that hasn't developed a leak.
Oh I thought Vera was not there at the beginning Pheeewwwwwww bless her xx I t looks lovely where you live. Christian is a brilliant Mechanic is he trained or self taught wow.
Fabian brings the car and speaks the least. OMG. :-) Good work friends, and Fabian you have a good strong car.
Another excellent video great fault finding and repair. It always intrigues me how you can have 2 identical cars and similar miles and condition and yet they somehow drive very differently I've driven quite a few v6 Rover 75s and its very strange how some seemingly feel like they have considerably more power than others
Thank you for all your had work producing these videos such great humour and knowledge. A merry Christmas to you and family 👍🧢🇬🇧
Great video, Making Land Rover repairs FUN!
Fabians is lucky to have you as friends.
13:48 YEAH !!! You can call him now Sooty too :D
Brilliant guys loving the videos very informative and very entertaining👍
Soon Land Rover will be coming to you for repairs to their own vehicles - Our local "Main Dealer" is sending work to a friend on mine who has a small garage because they do not know how to fix the faults appearing now. Great videos a "Must See" on a Sunday! Cheers from England.
Thanks
My thoughts exactly! JLR be coming over to ‘borrow’ his self-made tools 😂
Fabiaaaaaan! Always exciting when Fabian brings LRT OMGs
Christian is so big and strong. When he lift that exhaust he remind me of Tarzan wrestling with giant python
