  • Maintaining quality and value of your lumber starts right here, when the freshly milled wood meets the air for the first time. Drying hardwoods can be tricky sometimes. You might mill some spectacular wood, only to find it severely cupped or cracked after a period of drying. I hope to shed some light on what causes these defects, and how to succeed during this critical step of the process. All of this is in the context of a small scale operation, hobbyist or even the professional woodworker who produces his or her own lumber. If you have some experience in this field, or insight you want add, please do so in the comments. It would be awesome to get a discussion going on this subject, as so many seem to be lost when it comes to drying.
