  • Hey Ya'll, welcome to our little hobby farm. I'm thrilled you're here! I hope you'll find a comfy chair, a cup of something hot and wonderful, and spend sometime with us.
    You'll typically find me in one of two places, the garden or the kitchen. Teaching and sharing this amazing world of growing your food, cooking from scratch, utilizing your harvest, and homesteading with our family, is a passion. We hope to encourage people to grow their own food, feel confident in homesteading, and live a life both messy and beautiful, because this life comes with a bit of dirt and a lot of love.
    Every week you'll find us enjoying the wildness of raising a large family in the country. Welcome to the garden, to the kitchen, and to our small farm in South Carolina.
    Faith is like a seed; plant it in your heart. God gives the harvest at the appointed time. (Mark 4:26-27,28-29)

    This is so relatable. We had endless rain here and it ruined so much in my garden. This was after the hurricane. It made me lose my MOJO. That plus this insufferable heat.

    No need to apologize my dear, it's understandable. This is the real and uncut side of gardening and I'm glad you showed your emotions and passion for your produce. I lost all my pumpkins to squash bugs, and I want lie....it made me so sad,mad and frustrated all in one, I just cried. It was my first time growing them and they had a lot of pumpkins that I personally hand pollinated just to make sure they stays. We are only humans

    When you prepare your beds for fall can you film your process? Would love to see how you clear the beds of weeds and if you do any soil amendments.

      We actually have spent the last week pulling things out of the garden, the next time I do a clear out though I will definitely try to film it! I do not do soil amendments typically, but I will definitely film it if I do. I went over why I don't in the Q & A video.

      I am honestly not sure! I bought organic sweet potatoes from the grocery store about 5 years ago and they sprouted in my pantry. I used those slips to plant my first bed of sweet potatoes and have just repeated the process ever since. When I make blended sweet potatoes (like mashed potatoes) I do whip them pretty good, maybe that contributes to the flavor being creamier.

    Caution Complaining Tour.
    Brutal honest frustration from the start 😅. I hope those ladies paid you back in golden eggs. I had a cute little bunny as the culprit of destruction in my garden this year.
    😂 "You can't embarrass them." 😂 It was good that Husband was there for comic relief to ease the frustration.
    Everyone needs a chaos row.
    Gardening seems to always provide growth of wisdom. Your rant in the middle of the video hit me. It is very frustrating to know how much effort, time, and resources go into a project only to have outside forces destroy that hard work. Actually, it could apply to many of life's work. I love how you talked about faith will see you through. I would love to learn where you could see the character of God after the frustration has passed and your growth of wisdom. I liked Seth's observation about a barrow load of sweet potatoes.
    Have a glorious day!

    I totally let my patio garden and succulents ALL die one year over anxiety. I am not yet the avid gardener you are and succumb to anxiety every year so far. Plus never paying any attention to what needs what and when so now I decided to read the books, watch the videos and actually do things right next time.
    I am moving to central Florida in about a year, give or take from a zone 7b so I can garden all year long, actually taking off outdoor gardening in the really hot months for a change. I am sooo excited because I learned so much from RUclipsrs and now watching many Floridian gardeners too.
    I may need to stick to some culinary herbs and some succulents just for fun until then so I don't have so much to clean up for my move.
    Gardening is going to be my therapy, hobby and also practice in case SHTF one day. Although as far as food quality and prices, it kinda already has. I am definitely a meat eater and need a source for that because I am not the one that can grow souls for food except eggs and dairy of course, but want to grown all or most of my plant intake.

    Natasha honey, YOU VENT AWAY! You are not unreasonable! That’s time, sweat, tears, water, and TLC that’s lost! I’m not sure how close you are to those 3 chickens, but I’d probably make chicken soup! I do understand your frustration in a minute way, we accept some things are going to attack the garden. It’s a given. But those chickens need to be kept separate from the rest of the flock or they’ll be ……. Then there’s the beauty of the flowers in the garden. A little blessing from God my dear! Love you and your channel. Please don’t apologize, we understand anger and frustration. Be proud of your hard work. ❤🙏🍅🌺🌶️🫑

    12:11 And I thought it was supposed to be the year for cicadas. I guess they meant Japanese Beetles. 😢
    I was worried that the garden was going to get beaten around by Debby... Nope, it's pure calamity from those miniature feathered veliciraptors. Maybe using chicken wire to add height to the fence will help keep them out? Hopefully, you've got those issues from the storm you had previously mentioned resolved. 🙏
    20:20 The frustrated faces you make because he didn't 100% agree were absolutely hilarious! 😂😂😂
    Seth appears to be having a nice time healing, which is awesome to see! Enjoyed watching him help out this episode.
    Brain picking time: I have 12 massive roma plants that are fruiting like crazy! One is actually so massive and thick that it keep falling over and bringing the cage down with it (which I now see why some people say not to use them). 1/4 of the fruits have blossom end rot, 1/4 have weird scarring around the stem (no idea what that's from), and 1/4 have holes on the side (either fungus or bugs, unsure which). Would it be best to just harvest all decent sized fruit while green and ripen inside? Or keep trying to grow tomatoes in the neighbors' yard next year, aka throwing them out of frustration? 😂
    Thanks in advance, an awesome episode as usual. 🙏

    • @annellacannella5674
      @annellacannella5674 Месяц назад +1

      If you plant your tomato plants with a handful of crushed eggshells you will not have so much blossom end rot. Occasionally I get over enthusiastic and forget so then a handful of epsom salt around the plant once a month helps. Where I live in south Texas it’s best to pull all the old tomato plants and start the fall tomatoes by the end of this month. (Late August) make sure to plant early varieties so they will ripen before the frost. If you live up north I don’t know. It all depends on your expected first frost date.

    • @Joshua.zero29
      @Joshua.zero29 Месяц назад

      @annellacannella5674 Yeah, I'd seen people suggest the same thing before because BER tends to be a lack of calcium issue. If I had known that prior to planting, I would have tried that. But I'll definitely try the Epsom salt now.
      I'm not sure if I'll have enough time to plant a late season crop (Im northern Kentucky) since my romas just started fruiting a couple of weeks ago. But I've seen others in my zone and lower start using the sucker's they had removed to start their second crop.
      I'm extremely new to this and trying to learn as much as I can. Thanks for the advice. 😁

    • @ShepherdingPeppersFarm
      @ShepherdingPeppersFarm  Месяц назад +1

      The chicken issue has been resolved. I made chicken nuggets this week. 😂 Seth and I both had to go back and rewatch the part you tagged and Seth absolutely lost it, he thought it was hilarious as well. 😂
      I would 100% pick your tomatoes that are a decent size and let them ripen in the house rather than sacrifice them to the bugs! Let me know how it goes! 💚

    • @Joshua.zero29
      @Joshua.zero29 Месяц назад

      @ShepherdingPeppersFarm Those chickens realized that their actions had consequences, hopefully delicious consequences. 😁
      I watched that part 3 or 4 times, it was so funny! I think I was the only one to point it out. Now that I see that timestamp again, I'll probably get a few more laughs before I'm done commenting. 😂😂😂
      I watch a couple of other gardeners in my zone (6) to see what they're growing, how they're growing, and to compare growth. A few weeks ago, one suggested cutting half of the roots of a plant to stress the plant and to force ripening. I have tried this out with the roma plant that can't hold itself up and has massive romas on it. It's been 2 days, and it appears to be working.
      As for the others, I've been watching the plants fairly closely, but if I see more damage like that, I'll harvest everything of size and ripen indoors. I'll probably make that decision tomorrow morning.
      Have a great day!

      @@Joshua.zero29 I am looking forward to an update on how the process goes for you when you get to harvest them. I always find the redder the tomatoes the more bugs want them. The chickens made excellent chicken nuggets by the way! 😉
