Gurrumul is aboriginal from a community in the Northern Territory of Australia. He composed songs about his homeland and people and sings in his local native language. He was born blind and taught himself to play a right-handed guitar upside down with his left hand. His voice is beautiful and soulful. You need to react to him singing solo. Also react to him singing with Blue King Snake, an aboriginal group. He has toured the world and was a hit in Europe. Enjoy his song Wiyathul. It highlights his vocal talent and unique voice. You don't have to know the words to appreciate it's beauty. RIP Dr. G. Delta Goodrem is a brilliant singer, musician and songwriter. Another great Australian talent you need to react to.
I love how a lot of overseas reactors are reacting to Great Australian Artists now - thx Charlie - they deserve the recognition. As an Aussie, I've been following you for a while and I especially love your "Aussie" reactions - keep 'em coming! This performance showcasing another Australian icon, Delta Goodrem, is hauntingly beautiful. Here's a bit of info on Gurrumul.
Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu (22 January 1971 - 25 July 2017), commonly known as Gurrumul and also referred to since his death as Dr G. Yunupingu, was an Aboriginal Australian musician of the Yolŋu peoples. A blind multi-instrumentalist, he played drums, keyboards, guitar (a right-hand-strung guitar played left-handed) and didgeridoo, but it was the clarity of his singing voice that attracted rave reviews. Yunupingu died at the Royal Darwin Hospital, Northern Territory on the 25 July 2017, aged 46. He had lived with liver and kidney damage for many years due to hepatitis B which he had contracted in childhood.
We can add he was a member of the aboriginal band Yothu Yindi from 1985 to 1992 , who had the hit song ' Treaty'..Gurrumul is the nephew of YY's lead singer Dr Mandawuy Yunupingu (deceased)😢. Gurrumul started the Saltwater Band in 92 and went on to produce his finest album 'Gurrumul' in 2008 to worldwide acclaim. He does not speak English , only his native Aboriginal tongue.
Every time I hear and watch this beautiful video I cry my eyes out! The beauty in Gurrumul's voice is breathtaking!

Dr Yunupingu (Gurrumul), Aboriginal Australian elder who sadly passed away about 6 years ago. He was born legally blind and plays a right handed guitar upside down as he’s left handed and that’s all that was available when he grew up in his tribal village. His voice wraps around your souls and takes you to a very special place. Delta certainly didn’t let him down either.
I believe Gurrumul is singing in one of the many dialects of Yolŋu Matha, from the northeast Arnhem Land in northern Australia.
Australians First Nations had over 300 languages and many sub-dialects.. (we dont tend to call them "Aboriginie" any more)
This song gives me shivers.. Every time.. a mix of indigenous and the lyrics in English.. just sublime..
And Gurrumul is blind, and plays the guitar left handed, but not restrung left handed. He is self taught like that.

Brother gurrumul is amazing. Such a peaceful sound he has. He sings his is mobs language, one of the many indigenous dialects from australia. I don't even need to know what he's saying, I just love it. Nothing better than a walk through the bush with some gurrumul playing lightly in the background.

When Gurrumul was given his first guitar it was stringed for a right hand player, but he's left handed so he learnt to play with the strings upside down! Take a close look. Beautiful soul.

I was lucky enough to see Gurrumul live in Melbourne about 10 years ago. My Mum really wanted to go, I knew of him and appreciated his music, but I didn’t know how it would go listening to a full concert in a language I didn’t understand, but he was so captivating on stage it felt like it was over so quickly. RIP to a beautiful soul x

His unique style of guitar playing is, that he plays a right-hand strung guitar left-handed; he was self taught.

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunipingu was a blind aboriginal singer from the Northern Territory. He had the voice of an angel. You need to listen to some of his solo work. Delta combined beautifully here with him. He sadly died much too young in 2017

No one has a clue except for him. There are over 120 aboriginal languages but they call themselves the First Nation even though that idea wasn’t even in their cromagnon brains

I’m not a big fan of Delta, even though there is no doubt she has a great voice. But in this hauntingly beautiful duet, I think she is amazing. She uses a particular tone in her voice that blends beautifully with the dusky voice of Gurrumul. She lets him set the vibe and then builds her singing around his. Beautiful deference.

Oh yes, I know Ladysmith Black Mambazo, I was introduced by them collaborating on Paul Simon’s album Graceland, still one of my favourite albums. I agree with you on the magic that is made when two musical worlds collide, Bayini with Delta duetting with Gurramul is so special.

Mr G (this is a respectful way to say his name after his passing in 2017) has the most angelic voice ever. He was in the Aussie Band Yothu Yindi and won an ARIA (Australian Record Industry Award) for their song Treaty. He is from Galiwinku in Arnhem Land, which is a remote community around 530 km East of Darwin. He was blind from birth. The Indigenous language is not just one, used by all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in Australia. They have multiple languages so it is quite complex, but from what I have researched, he sang with the language Djambarrpuynu or Yolngu and in English. RIP

Amazing! Yes he is blind, he is also right handed but for some reason taught himself to paly a right handed guitar upside down and left handed - maybe because he couldn't see the 'right' way to do it. He is a Yolgnu man from the top end of Australia, singing in his birth language. He is related to the lead singer of Yothu Yindi, Manduway Yunupingu.
I'm not sure how much you know about delta
She not just talented singer and writer
But a fighter as well she's had health issues during her life
Delt beat cancer in her teens and later on in life needed operation on her throat next to her vocal cords
After the operation she couldn't speak as half her tongue was paralysed from operation and thought never sing again let alone speak
But worked hard with voice physical therapy and learnt to speak and adapted her singing style so she could sing again
There's a documentary on it with her while learning to speak again
Delta also wrote a song about her struggles during it and think was first song after recovery

He doesn't live in Australia, why would he know common customs of another country if he's never been there or even knew it was Australian. Don't bag someone because they weren't aware of something which could've been sensitive. He was told to react, he's being authentic by not looking up details and hes doing a 1st true reaction of a song. Don't throw country customs into stuff like this.

Hi Charlie by now I guess you haave worked out that Gurrumul Yunipingu was blind from birth played a right handed guitar upside down. He was born on an Islans off the coast near Darwin Called Elcho Island in the community of Galliwinku. I worked in the community of Galliwinku for a year or so the Yunipingu family is well known and a group of Yunupngu men had a hit with "Treaty"I think every youngster on the Island can play a guitar befor they can walk.

Re his language. Galpu, Gumatj or Djambarrpuyngu, which are all languages of the Yolngu people of northeastern Arnhem Land.
Gurramull is singing in Yolngu (which is a tribe from North NT) which is the same langauage as "baker boy" who raps this language (see "Marryuna").
Gurrumull was the guitar player for "Yothu Unidi" back in the 90's (their biggest hit was "Treaty" - great song). Gurrumull's brother was the lead singer for Yothu Yindi.
GURRUMUL is an Aboriginal that has been blind from birth. He self taught the Guitar and being LEFT Handed plays it UPSIDE DOWN !!?!
He composes all his own Music about Aboriginal Themes including "The Dream Time".
I see him as a Prophet for Aboriginal peoples, and us.

Language is Yolngu or Yolŋu from Galiwin'ku (Elcho Island). He was blind, played a right handed guitar left handed. Bet you have heard a load more of his music. RIP Dr G Yunnupingu.
I love linguistics but Yolngu is an especially difficult one to speak. Delta's attempt is inspiration for other learners and a good baseline.
Pretty sure Delta is singing the same verse as Dr G but in English.

The story of aboriginal australia is really terrifying but it should not divide modern people, we need to sing together and remember the time when it was about giving everyone a fair go.

As when they pass its to do with their beliefs of spirits
I'm not personally adverse totally why but every broadcast in our country there's always a warning that indigenous people maybe seen and passed away
The only thing I know is it to do with the spirits of the person and I don't think other indigenous will watch if their past away
