The biggest act left off the list is unforgivable - The Bee Gees. Yes, they were born in the Isle of Man, but migrated to Australia as kids in the 1950s. They grew up in the Brisbane bayside suburb of Redcliffe, did their first gigs at the local speedway in the late 1950s and got their break appearing on Brian Henderson's 'Bandstand' on Channel 9 in the early 1960s. Even their name has an Australian origin. The Bee Gees are named after the initials of Bill Gates, the Brisbane radio DJ who discovered them.

Agreed and Crowded house are a Kiwi band. Eh, it’s only somebody’s version of a list, we all have our own favourites 😊
They grew up on Cribb Island before it was reclaimed.

Fun fact: The Bee Gees were not born in the UK as The Isle Of Man is not part of it.

For a comprehensive list of Australian artists and bands to not have the Deltones and the Bee Gees included is mind boggling.
Please remember this 150 is just some guy's opinion, there is no other qualifications like sales of music or concert tickets. One-hit wonders are rubbing shoulders with folks who have 50yr long careers on this list, and there are both notable omissions and bias towards particular genres.
They also didn’t flatter some of those bands with the songs they showed.
Exactly. How the heck does Jason Donovan rank higher than Missy Higgins, Killing Heidi, and The Angels. And all that thrash metal in the middle? WTF?

Im an Aussie and Music is my Jam for 50 years and i have not heard about 30% of these acts
37 for John Farnham, 29 for Cold Chisel, and 24 for Jimmy Barnes?!?! This list is ridiculous. Jimmy has more Australian number ones than 1-23 combined.
And all of them have charted higher in the US than the three acts you mentioned. 16 has five Billboard #1s by herself, Jimmy's highest was a duet with INXS that barely cracked the top 50. This isn't a list for Australians.

Seriously, I'm Aussie and half of them I couldn't even tell you if I knew them or not. I'm talking about dozens of one hit wonders there, or maybe this is someone's personal list of bands they like. The 80s and the 90s were big for us musically. The 90s had Silverchair, powderfinger, grinspoon, Spiderbait, the living end, U Am I, killing Heidi, plus many others which were constant festival line ups. Every school holidays there'd be a Big Day out, royal Easter show, falls festival, groove in the moo, rock it, many other multi band shows. 90s was fun and very entertaining.
U Just took me to my fave place. the BDO was so legendary bc we got to see so many world class aus acts. alex lloyd!!! i just remembered seeing him there. but the list of those bands u lisyed really shows how ripped off AUS WAS, OVERSEAS. peace. falls.......ahhhh

I dunno man, I knew pretty much every band on there. Sure the order is debatable but it's a good list of bands
Yeah I think a lot of these acts were exports or mainstream and personally I've always been into 70s,80s pop and rock and I was a child of the 90s alternative era so a lot of these artists were unknown to me as well.
Also, this list was a lot of very famous artists but not their best songs so, yeah.

'The Day You Went Away' in my opinion, is the saddest song ever written in Australia. Beautiful song and video clip. It always leaves a lump in my throat.
Not forgetting, Chain- black and blue, Madder lake -12 pound toothbrush, Black feather - bopping the blues, Zoot- Elinore Rigby, and probably more that I have forgotten.

Definitely a lot missing and great songs way down the list. IMO...whilst I love 'Onion Skin', they should have used 'Dancing in the Storm' for Boom Crash Opera.
No Joe Camilleri on this list - unbelievable! An artist who isn't pigeon-holed in one type of music, but is brilliant in whichever he is performing ❤ Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons or The Black Sorrows the man's a legend 😊
And no Vika and Linda Bull either! It definitely isn’t a definitive list

Guy Sebastian, The Rogue Traders, Baker Boy, Hilltop Hoods, Thirsty Merc, John Butler Trio, The Presets.. so many good ones got shafted from the list!
They need to a top 500 List...
I haven’t got into the Top 100 yet, but I can already say that a lot of these artists are not shown performing their most famous song. Surely for Helen Reddy you’d choose ‘I Am Woman’ or for for Ted Mulry it would be ‘Jump in my Car.’ As for Jason Donovan’s ranking, he was only one of the first in a long line of soapie stars to become manufactured pop stars, even though he may have been huge in the UK. Keith Urban is big in America but not so much here where we have a lot of stay at home country musicians who have a loyal following. And, yes, John Paul Young recorded the original version of ‘Love is in the Air.’ He was a huge local pop star in the 1970s and that song was written and produced by the hit factory of Vanda and Young, former members of Australia’s version of the Beatles, the 1960s band The Easybeats. George Young was the older brother of Angus and Malcom from AC/DC.
Yeah. I thought it was really strange to represent acts with far from their best work. I wouldn’t think copyright sould be a problem with such small snippets.
Maybe they had problems with some songs getting blocked by the publishers.
Vanda and Young also made list themselves as Flash in the Pan - also not singing 'Hey St Peter'.

John Farnham should have been No.1 in my opinion, ACDC, Skyhooks and Sherbert and The Seekers should have been higher up the ladder and others should be there too - Angels, Rose Tattoo, Divinyls, Chisel and Olivia Newton John, to name a few. I've heard of most of these.
I don't think AC/DC could have gone any higher than what they were HAHA but yeah some of those bands singers should be way higher and some should not even be in the top 150 let alone the top 50

This list was strange..some relatively unknowns put ahead of some legends and didn't feature greatest hits of the artists. 😮 Would have put Easybeats much higher considering how groundbreaking they were for their time and the ongoing influence. If George Young hadn't been a success and bought guitars for his brothers Malcolm and Angus, we may never have had ACDC! And Vander and Young wrote "Love is in the Air. I still think 'Friday on My Mind' was one of our all time great Aussie anthems.
119. Flash and the Pan, 9. Easybeats and 1. ACDC, Vanda and Young have had so much influence on Australian music. I had forgotten about the music they wrote for JPY too.
While the post 2000 music I haven't heard of much there was some cool stuff in there.
Completely agreed. Some of the picks for band's songs on here were frankly bizarre. As if for Flash and The Pan you wouldn't put Hey St. Peter or Down among the Dead Men. Surely for Spiderbait you'd put Shazam. Etc. etc. Really odd.
Tina Arena, Kate Ceberano, Vanessa Amarosi, Jon English, ( English born Aussie), like the Bee Gees😃( correct me if I'm wrong).. Colleen Hewitt, etc etc.....

But also deserved a place as a soloist. Light on female artists in general, perhaps unsurprisingly due to their preference for metal.
IMO Aussie music peaked in the 70s - 90s . The Pubs were full of good bands and loud music . And it definitely had an Aussie sound to it all .
You need to get out more. Yes, there were some great bands then, but there is still fantastic live music and plenty of great rock bands touring. They just don't get played on the radio anymore.

@@heatherrowles9930 Parkway Drive. If they are playing somewhere, I'm there. When I first saw them, I'd only heard one of their songs and it's not really my style of music. It didn't matter. They are insanely good live. I saw Jimmy back then too but in a head to head of 80s Jimmy vs Parkway Drive now I'm not going to need the flux capacitor. 😁
The Teskey Brothers, Matt Corby, Guy Sebastion, Taj Farrant, Kasey Chambers are all current artists who have been receiving plenty of Utube reactions lately. There are a few artists missing from this list like The John Butler Trio, Busby Merou, Angus and Julia Stone, Richard Clapton, Brian Cadd, Russel Morris to name just a few and some I personally wouldnt have included but music is really a matter of taste.. If you want to see up and coming talent check out Taj Farrant who has only just turned 14 he started leaning the guitar when he was 7 and recently released a new single titled Crossroads which immediately went to No1 on the world soul music charts. He cant even read music just plays by ear he has already performed with the likes of Santana, his younger sister is also a pretty accomplished drummer.
Taj Farrant is an excellent guitarist as for the rest... hardly known overseas.

Damn there’s some good names there they missed and some crap that was in the list. Jon Butter trio and how Is Kasey Chambers not there.
It's just someone's list and music is a personal taste. I don't even think it's a properly ranked listed, just mostly grouped and numbered until it gets to the end. There were some bands there I hadn't heard of, but that's fine. Some more potentials to add to the list are Vanessa Amorosi, The Rubens, Do Re Mi/Deborah Conway, Hilltop Hoods, Flume, The Jezabels etc.

Such a travesty that Thirsty Merc wasn’t on the list, ‘Summertime’ in particular was a huge hit and known internationally too especially because it’s the theme song to tv show ‘Bondi Rescue’.
Personally I would have loved to have seen Ben Lee and Bernard Fanning on the list.
I went to a Matchbox Twenty Concert where Thirsty Merc were the support act. They were fantastic.
One thing that is surprised me is that Ian Moss & Jimmy Barnes got single credits as well as Cold Chisel but they only listed Sherbet as a band but didnt include Daryl Braithwaite on his own.
Daryl had many classic songs as a solo artist like Horses, One Summer & As The Days Go By. All three are great Aussie classics
Yea, Darryl performed The Horses on stage here earlier this year with Harry Styles
They also listed I'm talking way down the list but didn't list Kate Ceberano separately.

Australia had a huge pub scene where lots of bands cut their teeth. The 80's made Australia, not just bands but movies.
All of a sudden Australia was making a name for itself.
You've only scratched the surface here I'm afraid. I'm surprised by what's been omitted.
I was in the audience for Thorpie at the ABC's Gore Hill studio. He was late and everybody had to stand around waiting outside for hours. They had pulled in Carson (Broderick Smith's band) to perform on the tray of a truck to ease the tension of the crowd. Thorpie finally got there about 4:30 and it was the loudest live music I ever heard.
Any Australian rock list is incomplete without Johnny O'Keefe. He was rocking hard in the mid-50's so he pre-dates all the British bands. He was already well-established when he performed beside many of the original American rock 'n' rollers brought to Australia by Lee Gordon at Sydney Stadium.
Hello Simon, it's not insignificant that Rage has referenced Johnny O'Keefe from the start.
I completely missed Thorpie. At the time his earlier 60's material put me off but I was certainly aware of his change in direction.
I was a big fan of GTK when I was a youngster.
I only came to appreciate Billy fairly recently.
As an aside Billy is the earliest exponent of moon walking I've seen. Bandstand, Poison Ivy 1964.

A lot of really great Aussie musicians left off this list, Kasey Chambers, Guy Sebastian and the John Butler Trio just to name a few. But great to see some of our amazing metal bands getting a mention. Australia has an amazing metal scene that is often overlooked.

Do you actually know the origins of a LOT of our musical acts and bands? I think you'd find a hell of a lot of them came up from talent shows and battle of the bands.

How can Zoot not be featured? Darryl Cotton up front, Rick Springfield on lead guitar before he went solo and recorded Jessies Girl and Beeb Birtles on bass who, after Zoot, was a founder and songwriter of Little River Band. Zoot's cover of the Beatles 'Eleanor Rigby' is considered by some to be better than the original.

It's a real shame that they just ignored hip hop acts. I feel the Hilltop Hoods should have definitely had a spot on the list, especially if there going to include bands like The Chats. Also what about Guy Sabastian? He's a massive pop star isn't he?
This! Hilltop hoods is the first thing everyone thinks of when Australian hip hop is brought up and guy Sebastian is easily one of the biggest singers and celebrities out there with a massive hit like battle scars

Some may argue, but what about the Bee Gees? I know Barry Gibb said in a 2012 interview he considers Australia his home. There were a lot of acts in that video I wish weren't from Australia, some of that thrash metal they can keep, but hey, each to their own. It would be interesting to maybe react to a few more of the more famous songs, or maybe the artists in general.

John Farnham is regarded as Australia's top performing artist, with a career spanning three decades. Born in Essex, England, John immigrated to Australia in 1959 at the age of 10.

Glad it wasn’t only me who’d never heard of lots of the bands/singers or the songs lol. I’m in my 60s and still have all my cassette tapes and vinyls. But none of many in this vid. Maybe it might be the person who created it, they are their personal favourites with a few others thrown in for good measure lol

Only music genres covered were pop,rock and metal. Very surprised Bee Gees wasn’t there.
Lots of musicians not lost on that list from other genres such as Australian folk, country etc.
Like Red Gum, John Williamson, Shannon Noll, Adam Brand, lee kernaghan, Kate ceberano, slim dusty, Rolf Harris, and so many more.
So a few I had forgotten about, a few I didn't realise were Australian and most after 2010 I didn't know. I thought the song choices for some of the groups were strangely not their most well known.
I think the person who compiled the video had a love of the heavier stuff because there were far more bands of that nature than I had imagined and missing a good few of what I would have thought were more well known - Marcia Hines, Helen Reddy, Kate Cebrano, Mental as Anything and lots more.

It said at the beginning of the video it was for rock and metal so didn’t include country and a few other genres.
Helen Reddy is @ #109 and Mental As Anything @ #149 were included, covered very quickly. Kate Ceberano was included as part of I’m Talking @ #148.
Mental as Anything were about number 148. There were quite a few artist I'd never heard of. I think they got the top ten about right though.

Yes, John Paul Young didn't write the lyrics but sang 'Love is in the Air' and it's his version which became the mega hit.
The song was written by George Young and Harry Vanda for JPY.
It had a resurgence with Strickly ballroom.

Stevie Wright's "Evie" (also composed and produced by Harry and George) - the longest stay at No. 1 in the charts for any Australian single.
And the winner is BON SCOTT and AC/DC! 😃 I knew about half of those bands and more of the songs, what special memories! Its great to see Moving Pictures, Masters Apprentices, Skyhooks, Screaming Jets, Baby Animals, Divinyls, Ian Moss, Daddy Cool (Ross Wilson), Paul Kelly, Goanna, Little River Band, Stevie Wright, Billy Thorpe, Sherbet, Missy Higgins, Nick Cave! None of these were on the last compilation! "It's a long way to the top"! 👍
Diesel was pretty renowned from the late 80s through the 90s too, for one I haven't seen mentioned yet. It's a shame some of the songs in the vid were clipped right before the iconic catchy parts haha
This is the most RANDOM ranking of artists, and definitely made by someone with a love of metal.

Absolutely, for a man who can really belt them out, he sang Somewhere Over The Rainbow beautifully. I only recently watched Billy’s memorial concert on RUclips again. So many Aussie singers paying tribute to our Thorpy, really heartwarming.
I'm Australian and I haven't even heard of from 150 to 125 I only recognize maybe 5 out of the first 25 bands countdown. But one big problem to me is the 2 seconds of the bands song, how are you supposed to like a song if you only play 2 seconds of the songs WTF is the rush...

The 1st ones at #150, 'The Cockroaches' became the world-famous Wiggles. They had only limited success as a rock band so decided to start a children's act ... the rest is history.
Some of those bands I recognised as being one hit wonders.

Ta for that info. Must check out the cockroaches, never knew Wiggles were in a band previously. Must ask my daughter if she knows as she worked with the Wiggles in the same show in Hong Kong many years ago. My daughter worked for Disney, they have/had Aussie scouts here. She was studying full time musical theatre, aged 19, gee she’s nearly 40😱lol, and Disney wanted her. Said The wiggles were all wonderful kind men.
If you go back to the late sixties, early seventies. Australias first ever singer to top the American charts was Russel Morris singing On The Wings Of An Eagle.
He has the most amazing voice. You also had from the same era, singers such as Brian Cadd, Doug Parkinson. An amazing list of singers from that era.
Doug Parkinson's "Dear Prudence" cover is brilliant, sung when he was just 23! And speaking of Beatles covers, John Farnham's cover of "Help" is sensational, too.

Vanessa Amorosi, Renee Geyer, John English not even in the top 150 ? Jimmy Barnes still putting out great music but not in the top 10 ? Kasey Chambers' version of "Lose Yourself" is all over You Tube at the moment but she's not on the list. Very questionable choices and rankings.
Don’t think they had James Reyne solo. Even Normie Rowe had lots of hits in the 60s & 70s.
I just remembered one guy who is rated by many as the best guitarist in the world - Tommy Emmanuel. Maybe it's because he's not in a band or isn't a singer ? He used to play in John Farnham's band once if that counts... as well as playing with his brother Phil. The trouble with lists like these is that they tend to illustrate the lack of musical knowledge shown by the maker of the list.
Why no Angels!! They were an Awesome rock band of the '70s and 80's...

I'm Australian and there were a few I'd heard and did'nt even know they were aussie, btw the guitarist from the Easybeats was George Young, older brother of Malcolm and Angus from AC DC, he also produced their first two albums.
The Young brothers are Scottish not Australian.

TISM, The living End, Hoodoo Gurus and Spiderbait would be great rabbit holes to venture down. Hard to believe The Saints are not higher - recognised as the first punk band.
The Saints- before the Ramones, before the Sex Pistols and before the Damned and The Clash. But doing it in Brisbane so underrated.

The biggest rabbit hole I have ever been down in music is Pendulum! They are from my home city of Perth, so it made it infinitely more interesting!
'Weddings, Parties, Anything' - definitely makes it into the top 100.
AC/DC is the greatest band that came out of Australia . Formed in 1973 and still fantastically awesome.❤

Steve Irwin's favourite song was True Blue by John Williamson. Its one of those songs you may have never put on but just by living and existing in Australia you know the lyrics.

if I did a top 150 then I think that about 25% of those songs would make the cut.
The most Amazing part of this to me, an Aussie. Is that soo many popular common artist universally like 5SOS, Vance Joy, Keith Urban, InSync, Gotye and all these other bands are actually Australian! There are soo many bands that are known universally but people just never knew that they were Aussie!

I'd suggest; "I'll never find another you," "Morningtown Ride," "A World of Our Own," "The Carnival is Over," or their version of, "I am Australian," (Bruce Woodley co-wrote this one) , also, "Red Rubber Ball," a hit for The Cyrkle, when Paul Simon, "Forgot," that Bruce Woodley had co-written that as well.
And 'Come The Day' from the same concert in the video is inspiring!
A lot of those seemed to be strange song choices as in not there more popular songs but a lot were also legendary

The numbers of the artists are so mixed around, so I assume that it's not ranked, just random. Also, I'm surprised Taxiride isn't on the list, seeing as songs like 'Get Set' and 'Everywhere You Go' were pretty massive, also The Angels, Goanna, Choir Boys, The Church, Hilltop Hoods, were all pretty big. A lot of the songs they picked where not the most well known for the groups/singers either. Some were just 'who?' - mostly the metal groups. lol.
Count Down was a tv show that promoted Australian artists for years.
Too much lip synching on Countdown. Bad luck they didn't make them play live for all those years. That would have separated the sheep from the goats for everyone to see.
Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs was the singer you said, “Good voice”. Billy Thorpe also wrote two books, ‘Sex, Thugs and Rock’N’Roll’ and ‘Most People I Know’(think that I’ll crazy). Both are a quick enjoyable stories of life at the top and getting there, laugh out loud read. The second one was more immersive. Do watch his music videos . His concept Album was genius.🎸

The thing this list reminded me of most was the thriving live music scene we used to have. So many bands on this list I was able to see playing pub gigs back in the day, and many by accident!
Rick Springfield started off in a group called Zoot. Their big hit in 70's was a rock version of 'Beatles' song' Eleanor Rigby'. Rick went solo to USA and was on soapie " General Hospital".

I'm a 59y.o Aussie and have lived here all my life,. I don't know who compiled the list but they don't have mainstream musical taste. I know very few of the 150 songs and I consider myself a lover of music. Here is a list of some of the best we have produced here in Australia, check out the following bands.... Frente were popular for about 5 minutes. Their bizarre love triangle cover is amazing as well as "accidentally Kelly Street"
The new genre coming through is quite talented including the Kid Laroi and a lot of indigenous music shining through including the Baker Boys. Sad though that the Bee Gees, etc not featured.
Also we landed in Aus in 86 and was mind blown with the quality of the music.

I'm kinda disappointed that this list didn't include either Jon English or Marcia Hines. Jon was a rock singer and actor who gained fame as the first person to play Judas in Australia's Jesus Christ Superstar, once declared by Tim Rice to be better than Broadway. Marcia was Mary Magdalene at the time and was the first performer in Australia to go platinum.
Mate, not knocking him (nor his great talent) but Jon English was born in London, England and moved to Aussie when he was in his teens. Same transfer-in situation for Bee Gees, Olivia NJ, Keith Urban, Jimmy Barnes, Finn Bros (Crowded House) and a whole heap of other singers and front men. Young Bros of ACDC. etc
Bee Gees didn't make it big until they moved back to England when oldest was 19.
Marcia Hines was American. Moved to Aussie at age 16 in 1970. Became an Aus Citizen in 1994 at age 40.
Don't think the acts were put in any particular order, so as such no number one. I would have added Richard Clapton, Russell Morris and Hush just for a few extras from our earlier days
LRB the MOST international awarded Aussie band. with a truck load of top 10 hits in the US and number ones here in Oz. Sinatra and Lennon both considered "Reminiscing' one of their favourite songs ever. Glenn Frey (Eagles) said publicly that LRB were the greatest vocal band in the world. INXS never came close to them. AC/DC were fantastic, true rockers but didnt have as many hits as them despite being incredibly HUGE.
u cant compare LRBs success to ACDC. Clearly LRB havent sold 200mil albums and AIR SUPPLY prob sold more also. without checking. but hey they were amazing

The Chats are excellent, yes Smoko is a relegion for any tradie workers. They are from Nambour in Queensland a couple of hours north of Brisbane. Another few song of theirs are: Pub Feed, Nambored and Dine n Dash. My favourite bands from Australia, strangely enough are 3 x Queensland bands. The Saints (Chris Bailey was their singer RIP Chris) The Go Betweens and Powderfinger. INXS from WA were very good and from the past Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs and The Easybeats. I think after a certain stage I missed a lot of these bands.....or they were only played on triple jay. I'm too old, perhaps, in my 60s. They missed the Hard Ons with that loud growly metal (forget what it's called, not my genre).
We have some iconic Aussie groups through the 60's, 70's, 80's and beyond including Masters, ACDC, Cold Chisel, Bee Gee's, Skyhooks, Sherbet, Little River Band, INXS and many, many, many more.

What an incredible list (quite a few I didn't know though). Growing up over here in Australia, I have to say that nothing will ever beat the 70s and 80s for Aussie hits. INXS, ACDC, Kylie, Men At Work...there's just so many! Take a look at one of our brilliant DJ's Hot Dub Time Machine, he transitions from 60s through to now in each of his shows. Keep in mind that not all of these were the most popular songs these bands and singers have that gives instant recognition...some are just random songs that only a fan would know.
damn, no The Presets, they made some absolutely iconic electronic dance songs that blew up down under, and they were actually pretty ahead of their time. stiff for them not to get a mention.

crowdies are one kiwi sometimes 2 and they were a band not a solo act. from nicks artwork to HESTERS unparalleled skills. and they have never been the same since. besides. neil always referred to them as a MELB band. ill take his opinion over urs however i do get wat ur saying. i joke my fave aus bands are split enz and shihad.....and they are. lmao except..........

Grinspoon and Eskimo Joe are worth checking out, Grinspoon especially were massive and had a lot of different sounds but being from Australia I would recommend a lot of these bands and I’m personally into the heavier stuff but well worth a listen if you’re into that kind of stuff

The very first on the list, The Cockroaches, after a few cast changes became the original The Wiggles. You can recognise Jeff and Anthony. Part way through you see Voyager, who were Australia's 2023 Eurovision entrant, placing 9th.
You can definitely hear the wiggles 'vibe' in the Cockroaches music.
