    1) Most aftermarket "Cold Air" intakes are really just under hood "Hot Air" intakes. If the air filter is not sealed in an enclosure that has an end opened to ducted cool air, you'll just be sucking warm less dense under hood air. Better is to use the 2004+ CVPI Air box assembly along with the 2006+ CVPI intake tube with an 80mm MAF - used 2006+ CVPI parts should be cheaper. 2) Forget the throttle spacers, and use a 70 or 75mm throttle body instead. 3) If you're just going to do some small bolt on mods, keep the stock intake manifold. The aftermarket manifolds will not provide a boost in power unless you are going to regularly run it at 5500 + RPMs. 4) Hollowing out the front CATs may give a boost in power, but hollowing out or deleting the rear CATs does nothing. The exhaust manifolds and stock exhaust system is more of a restriction. The front CATs are what are called "Pre-CATs". They are there mostly for when the engine is cold and warming up which is why they are closer to the engine. The rear CATs are there for when the engine is at operating rating temperature hence why they are further back in the exhaust system. 5) Most civilian CVs came with 2.73:1 rear gears. Swapping out to a 3.27:1 or 3.55:1 will give you snappier acceleration, but overall really won't make the car that much faster. I've got a 2008 CVPI with 3.27:1 gears that gets about 23 MPG or so @ 60 MPH. Also, since the 4R70 and 4R75 use splash lubrication for the tail shaft, using anything higher then a 3.55:1 gear requires modification to get more rear lube or the tail shaft seal will fail. Really, one of the best sites for the Panther platform is Chris @ ADTR.net, and Darrin @ BCA Transmissions - bcawebstore.com

    Hey I have four Mercury marauder chrome rims factory OEM. I was thinking about getting a black crown Victorian and making it look like a marauder clone. L71 Victoria, Or a black grand Marquis. Which one of those two is better? What do you think is the best bang for your buck grand marquis versus crown Victoria? Which one do you recommend for a marauder conversion

    Smart decision on the high flow air filter. It has been proven that those cold air kits are useless. That air intake was designed for that engine. The only bad thing about it is they quieted it down.

  • @stwhite5135
    @stwhite5135 4 года назад +2

    The stock intake is a cold air intake. It draws air from the wheel well which is outside the engine compartment. Aftermarket intakes draw air from within the engine compartment which makes them HOT air intakes. Put a shift kit in the transmission. You will have much more fun. Besides if you want a hot rod start with a lightweight car such as a Mustang or Nova. Sheeesh.

    • @OldeCarrGuy

      Hey Man. I appreciate what you are saying. If you follow the build series, you'll know that I Installed a high flow (not cold air) intake. I already have a couple of hot rods, just putting together a plan to make this beast a bit more agile!

    I uncrimped and removed the heat shields on the rear cats, cut a c-shaped panel in the cat body and bent it open. This way i could completely remove all the material inside. Then, bent the panel back closed, reweld the seams and replaced the heat shields. Looks stock and no one is the wiser!

    In my opinion true performance starts in the drivetrain and this goes double for an automatic. The first thing I like to do with my automatic project cars is get them shifting harder/faster and keep them from wasting quite so much of the power they already have. I just put a really hard shifting servo that also reduces slip in my $600 Trans Am project and it cost me less than $200 bucks including shipping.
    TCI makes a valve body for GrandMa's transmission that does the same thing and it only cost about 160 bucks. The downside is it's a bit more difficult to install as you need to drop the pan.
    Apart from that, one of the cheapest performance mods you can do for this kind of car is to swap to the P71 interceptor driveshaft as it is lighter and puts noticeably more power to the ground, you should be able to find one in a junkyard very easily and for cheep. Jegs also has good converters for that trans. starting at 400 bucks and good rear gears for even less. Fuel mileage shouldn't be a real issue since the car already has an OD trans. A reasonably lower gear wouldn't have any worse effect on fuel mileage than the bigger injectors you'd have to move up to if you turbo or supercharged it.
    Speaking of power adders have you considered nitrous? A really good wet kit specifically for a Crown Vic 4.6 that you can safely spray an extra 150+ HP with cost about half what it would cost to turbo the car and the results would be comparable when the button is on, maybe even better. A cheap dry kit that you can safely spray an extra 75+ HP with cost even less but they have limitations, no fuel solenoid means your safe shot limit is much lower however some guys are supposedly running 125 and 150 HP dry shots on 4.6's with success.
    I think if you did the P71 driveshaft, Tbody spacer, cold air, and the TCI valve body it would be a sweet little package that altogether wouldn't be too difficult to install and wouldn't hurt the wallet to badly. If you wanna get crazy then throw in the gear, converter and nitrous and you'd be running with turbo cars for considerably less cash.
    I can send you a link to the forum where I just read the nitrous info or links to any parts I mentioned if you are interested. I don't really have anything to do on this fine Saturday so I figured I'd help you research some mods for GrandMa LoL

    • @OldeCarrGuy
      @OldeCarrGuy  5 лет назад +1

      Well now! I do t rightly know how to respond to a short story! Lol Other than to say you raid some really good options! Yes!!! The Transmission shifts quite smooth and drawn out on these cars and could benefit from tighter shifts! And it’s easier than ever when you already have a hoist and other tools to do the job standing up! I’ll definitely look into that kit! DM me the link on IG and I’ll take a peek! As far as nitrous, I think I’ll hold off for now as I do want to use a power adder at some point! I’ll look for an aluminum driveshaft as well as rear gear options!
      I really appreciate the help!

      @@OldeCarrGuy Yeah sorry that was a long one, I don't mean to sound like a hipster or anything but youtube is the only social media I mess with. However the part number for that valve body is

    Superchargers are always the better option for these old big block V8s. Reason being, they are less complex, and a Supercharger is less complex than a turbo which = less things that could go wrong. A Supercharger is more direct power as well.

    Cold air intake is pointless without a tune. Your check engine light will come on for lean on bank 1 and 2 without a tune. I just did all of what you mentioned plus i did a j mod to the trans. but i also got a marty ochs tune and an sct x4 device. If you got the money that marty tune is where it's at. Those cats and the mufflers got to go. Also find a junkyard mustang and find a h pipe or x pipe. Without one the exhaust can be a bit clappy. Then you need to watch rizzo's video on how to jmod the tranny. You can squeal tires all the way through 3rd gear with a jmod. Takes like 20 minutes in the driveway if you know your way around some tools. I did mine in 20 minutes. while I was replacing the over drive servo snap ring, that busted off on my valve body. causing 4th gear to stop working. Now my town car shifts so quick the serpentine belt will squeak from sliding. 🤣🤣🤣
