    I am really following this build with all my heart and soul because I love these cars. I was so happy to see that high flow filter in her but was a bit disappointed with the 0 to 60 timing. My 03 grandma is stock with stock filter and goes to 0 to 60 in around 8 seconds without ac. I guess it's because I replaced ignition coils on mine with high performance heavy duty ones.

      What brand of "high perormance heavy duty" coils did you put on your '03 , and where did you get them ?? The most popular brands are "ACCEL" and "MSD", and the MSD brand has a better reputation among racers -- but there must be others out there.
      The famous 95 MERC has the OEM coils, still providing excellent performance and fuel mileage after 168,000 miles, while using BOSCH #09725 Mag-Core Ignition Wires and BOSCH # 9605 Double Iridium Spark Plugs @ .054 gap.

      You may have different rear gearing. 15 seconds seems really slow though. I think my old 98 merc used to do 12 seconds. I have an 03 lx sport now with 3.27 rear gears, dual exhaust, and comp xe262ah cams. Not sure what the 0-60 is but it's quick for an old big sedan.

    Good choice I like Spectre filters, I just put a Spectre air filter in the stock air cleaner assembly on my $600 Trans Am project. I wanted to get a better flowing filter without ditching the stock hood scoop and a Spectre that fit cost considerably less than a K&N but does the exact same thing. Spectre, K&N, AEM it doesn't matter who makes the filter as long as it's made of cotton. Cotton flows/breathes so much better than a paper filter and that's why it makes more power. A friend of mine and my dads that used to race the six cylinder class at circle tracks around here said a cotton K&N filter made a whopping 7 more HP for his race car on the dyno. It was the same size filter too so the gain was purely from the filter element material.

    With bypassing the box you bypassed some of the resonators that helped quite it down and it breathes better so it is a little louder and maybe a little more power. Also I noticed on some cars, that with open element filters under the hood even k&n I noticed it dosnt get as hot under the hood I'm assuming it's because the hot air is sucked in and it dosnt get as hot under the hood, ot sure if you noticed on yours.

    • @OldeCarrGuy
      @OldeCarrGuy  3 года назад +2

      Colder air is more dense and in theory makes more HP, but being able to move more air will make the engine breathe more efficiently. On a 230hp land yacht, none of it makes much of a difference until you tune it. That's the next step. Thanks for watching.

    I wouldn't be afraid to keep the lower portion of the intake box, it's still a portion of colder air than the rest of the engine bay...but moreso to help confine the area that the cone filter can bounce around in more than the rest of that. But it does sound good!

    Get a drop-in K&N filter for your stock air box. That thing is taking in hot air from under the hood and your car is pulling timing because of the warmer intake temperatures.

    • @OldeCarrGuy
      @OldeCarrGuy  3 года назад

      But I like it hot. Besides, I'm in Canada, I need all the warm air I can get...lol

    • @steverandall5814
      @steverandall5814 2 года назад

      You DON'T want a K&N oiled air filter. The air filter oil will eventually gum up the mass air flow sensor just downstream of the air cleaner.

  • @doubletap10mm
    @doubletap10mm 4 года назад

    I was wondering if you are worried about the filter sucking hot engine air now that it doesn't have the box to act as a barrier. Seems to me like that would defeat the purpose and all you did was make a hot air intake that looks cool. Let me know ifi m wrong because I would like to do this if it works.

    • @OldeCarrGuy
      @OldeCarrGuy  4 года назад +3

      Great question Michael! This was never meant to be a cold air intake but rather a high flow! It is in my opinion and experience that high flow outweighs the benefits of cold air! Ultimately you would want both however, we’re not talking about a tuned powerhouse here!

Oh, also I plan to watch all the vids you have out already. That being said, I just seen the cat video you made where you hollowed them out. One question,

      I heard the Electronic Throttle body for some reason doesn't like the CAI, something about it messing with the air/fuel mixture so it runs shitty n laggy. I have an 01 Marquis GS with the cabled throttle body and put one on it works great, I got better torque, little more HP, and depending on how I use my throttle, a bit better mileage, I did however tighten up the throttle cable down at the pedal, and messed with the positioning some on the throttle body itself. I ranged 24hwy b4, but I saw a 4-6mpg increase after. Burnouts are little easier 🤘 with that little extra torque.

    Thanks man, just did this to my 2011 with straight pipes and a full AC delete. I gotta say, with a full pcm relearn this thing kicks. Cut the fender guards right before the wheels so it's not a hot air intake and so the wheels aren't throwing rocks and such into the engine bay and my god, this is definitely one of the best mods along with a full AC delete. The sound it makes at 5800 rpms is absolutely hilariously over the top. Tempted to have a shop retune the entire pcm to accommodate the higher air flow through the plenum and manifold to really make this thing haul ass. Keep up the good work bud. Edit: If anyone gets the wrench follow this: ruclips.net/video/hZAsoqmqhdM/видео.html. It throws a code for incorrect throttle position or incorrect flow whenever you disconnect the MAF or throttle body position sensor. Make sure you do this as to avoid this.
