    Scenario you didn't mention: failure of one of the two air shock chambers. A sudden pressure loss could have caused the behavior you encountered and loss of footing. Since both chambers were damaged in the crash it's possible the crash damaged covered up this failure. Do the shocks both still hold pressure with the damage shown? If they do that rules out my theory, but if not this may be worth considering.
    Thank you for sharing the good and the bad experiences with these amazing devices.

  • @pouchy400
    @pouchy400 4 года назад +25

    I believe you suffered from “rider float”. It’s almost the same theory as valve float in an engine. The sudden drop the rider and the euc encountered at different rate or the rider suffers from a delayed descend. Obviously, there was a point where there was a separation from the rider and machine which force the rider to float. which means the euc descended first before the rider did. At that high rate of speed , the euc may have landed and compressed at the inner manhole ring which may have cause the bottom half of the euc to slow down while the top half may have rotated forward changing the angle of the peddles. The rider’s center of mass is now behind his feet. In that position, he now lands or crashes into the euc misaligned , with most of his feet landing on some of the peddles, and then rolling / sliding.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  4 года назад +5

      Keep in mind that I have ridden over hundreds of manhole covers by this point and there’s nothing special about the one I crashed on, this is why I think there must have been contributing factor like the tire that caused the crash.

    • @pouchy400
      @pouchy400 4 года назад +2

      Hsiang there is another theory regarding suspension setup and tuning also there is the tire. I’m going to ask a suspension expert to chime in to see if that played a roll. Hopefully I may have an answer on that.

    Glad you're okay. You're a trooper for making this very informative video. I think that tire played the biggest part in your accident. The way it was punctured almost looked like a blowout, but that would have made a big popping sound. Still, in all the videos I have seen of EUC crashes, I have never seen a tire that looked like that afterward. In fact, most of the time it is the tire that remains intact and undamaged more so than the shell and other components of the EUC. Anyway, stay safe, keep riding, and keep the videos coming. :)

    protection gear is always necessary no matter if you were a mature rider or not. we can not fully trust a wheel considering its battery,suspension, balance, electric component,there are so many factors and each of them could cause a bad crash, even the chance is minimal on modern wheels but we can not take the risks.

    If it was hitting anything (a carb or a truck) that damaged the tire and the case, you'd notice a damage on the wheel rim. The rim might even flatened a bit if that happened. This is what I experienced with my Z10 when I hit the pot hole. The tire was cut and the rim was hit and flatened a bit.

Just because your speed limit is 30-60mph doesnt mean you should max it out everytime. Otherwise, every lawmakers will take notice on how dangerous these EUC, EBikes etc and will start banning them all over the city. Dont ruin it for everyone.

    This is concerning. I know of one rider who uses a strap to keep his wheel from rolling away in such a case. I don’t know how safe that would be for the rider who may then get tangled up with a fallen wheel. However, one thing I like about my Walnutt skateboard is that it stops when you hop off. EUCs need to incorporate that of some safety measure. A truck is one thing. A human or animal is another. Glad you’re okay and thanks for sharing. Now I’m wondering if I should take back my deposit on the V11. Hmm.

      A free flying EUC is dangerous, but harness idea just seems to risky to the rider. Imagine needing to bail to avoid a vehicle but having the forward moment drag them under a vehicle.
      I would look at scooter crashes as example. How many pedestrians have been harmed in scooter crashes? I dont but that data would be interesting to see.
      Eventually it will happen. A pet or a child of some other person will be severly injured by EUC.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  4 года назад +5

      Keep in mind that I only ride that kind of speed when I am in moving car traffic, so for someone to get hit by a wheel they would have to stand in the path of incoming car traffic. It does happen here in NYC but usually they pay attention or they get run over by a car. Leashing the wheel is likely a bad idea as you may turn the predictable straight trajectory of the wheel into a something less predictable while hurting yourself at the same time.

When you fall you do it in the same line as the EUC goes and as a unit. The EUC suffers lesser damage and you prevent hurting others. Without it I would have lost my EUC more than once, riding on extreme Off-Road (Mountains in Chile). Having used them a lot, I do recommend a suitable leash just as we do with other vehicles (e.g. Sufboards).

    Glad that you survived OK. You sound as if you are hoping that the crash was caused by the burst tyre. The burst tyre was almost certainly caused during the crash impact. I have been riding wheels for 4 years and motor cycles for almost 60 years and have suffered burst or rapidly deflating tyres on both. The effect in both cases would not have been what you experienced, for one thing you would have fallen forward possibly after a wobble and not backwards and the wheel would probably not have been able to race away as you described.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  4 года назад +1

      Well I went back and forth on this one, my original thought was that the gash was caused by the impact with the truck, but I just don’t see it being fast enough or the impact hard enough for the tire to be damaged that badly, the wheel was still upright when it hit, and the big impact looks to be on top of the handle since I think it hit the lower corner of the mail truck bumper. And if the gash line up with the crack on the side cover its at rear right of the wheel so again, shouldn’t be involved in the initial impact. One of the guys here said they have seen a tire rip because of defect and it looks like it. Also, I felt around the inner tube and I don’t feel a big hole, so the tire might have rip in the initial bump but complete deflation may have taken longer.. but theories of course and I wished I had my camera rolling!

    It's a design flaw! They're is one degree of freedom in the suspension (up/down), but two adjustable air springs. The springs are never the same, so there is lots of uneven stress in the frame as the springs fight each other. Add a bunch of riding cycles and cracks will grow in the metal till it breaks.

    I do believe as you said you felt your feet leave the EUC when it happened. In that case since the EUC landed first it probaby continued acceleration and your acceleration slowed. That cause your feet to move 1/2 way back on the foot pad and tilted you back which might of caused you to slip off the EUC. Being off balanced when landing back on the foot plate with your wieght off the footpad since your heels are off the foot plate now made you tilt back and kick the EUC forward. I think putting some grip pads on the side of EUC to help with floating and sliding back on foot pad would help alot for air times. I purchased a S18 on the way and I think watching your video that's another thing I'll definately do. Don't want my feet to land where I don't expect it when I'm floating during a bump or jump. Thanks for video, it definately helps me think how to ride safer.

    Dear Hsiang, IMO you are driving your V11 with the suspension incorrectly adjusted. Of course I can be wrong, but it is not just about the weight of the rider. We should consider also the surface and style of use. You are not doing Off-Road but even your voice shows how hard you you did setup the suspension. In the video you can also see your feet almost at the same level as the motor "shaft". I do not think it is the most stable combination for good control. Even lesser on such a large vehicle. It makes me think that perhaps you should have adjusted the EUC to yourself instead of adjusting yourself to the EUC. Also, as we do with surfboards, skis and others, safety lines are used to maintain control of our vehicle when falling; as larger and faster the EUCs are becoming, more we should consider a similar accessory to reduce damage to our vehicles as well as for the well being of others with whom we share the space. I'm very sorry for your accident, but it could have been way worse. Too many cases of EUCs running wild. By not taking preventive actions, we may be risking to get limited by harsh regulations like it has happened in some countries in Europe after some accidents. I am glad you are well, I follow your great videos, hope you can get your awesome V11 back soon and perhaps we should start considering to use a safety line as much as a helmet.

Other have suggested a safety line but I disagree that it would make crash event safer, it would alarm me more to have two heavy objects sliding down the road connected by a wire, I think they use to chain two cannon balls together during medieval time to do extra damage and you may achieve the same effect with a tether.

    Glad you're okay and that there was not really other damage than the wheel itself.
    Your footage shows that the suspension barely compresses, and that your pedal height is probably higher than it should.
    With too high pressure in the shocks, the lack of sag and lack of travel made the whole wheel bounce instead keeping traction and connecting to your feet.

    Cut off should be forbidden on any EUC no matter what the cause is. It should automatically tilt back, slow the wheel down and only cut off at zero speed! Hey sorry to hear about this crash and your injuries rest up... take care... best wishes... sometimes you can get strange rebound behaviour from shocks under repeated max travel... this can give quite a jolt unsettling the rider... if you can control the rebound it is best to set it conservatively... I have lost control on MTB several times due to this effect... that cast aluminium frame of the saddle is a worry it tends to be very brittle in shear which it is likely to encounter in that saddle assembly during crashes some tubing would have been better...

    Wow man that sucks! 😥 great to see you survived and landed on your salty eggs haha. 😉
    The tire damage most likely happened when it hit the truck.
    I'm guessing the suspension design that springs your feet (but not the wheel) bounced you off the footpads and caused the crash. People have been mentioning that it feels like the v11 can bounce your feet off the pads.
    What bothers me is that cast aluminium top handle assembly all smashed up like that. You can see how brittle the cast metal is and the large crystals at the breaks show that metal will be likely to shatter. I think inmotion need to do a redesign there with a stronger material (like forged, or carbon fibre) or larger cross section if they stay with brittle cast metal... maybe just a better quality cast metal, it's a structural component not just a cosmetic one so crappy cast metal is not good enough. 🤔

      No, your weight transfer through the aluminum slider arm which is more beefy, the thinner frame on top only ties both sides of the pedals together. Slight disagreement on point 2, even though I don't think it was user error. If you are balancing a lot of gear, or cameras, etc... at least for me, I tend to hyper focus, slow down, pay way higher attention. Thus potentially, you could've just relaxed into the eide and paid slightly less attention. Again, with that said, I don't think that's the case.
    I think the 3rd most likely just due to the way the tire is damaged. Simple flats or screws or nails in the road don't make a multi-jagged cutclike on your tire. I've been riding bicycles for years and never seen a rip like that. Thus, based on the info, this seems the most likely.

      @@OWGAC okay good, so nothing negative financially for you except the loss of a demo wheel; not that that isn't bad but it could be a lot worse like if you were out cash due to a wheel that you had to pay for. Again, my first concern is that you're okay and I'm glad you are.

      @@OWGAC looked for", road safety" on your video library but the closest i found was this one ruclips.net/video/tPaMRVRW7u8/видео.html pretty normal if there are no rules (and we don't like rules). Most people gear up AFTER the fact, i did as well... Over and over.. Even if im 46y.o. :-) but still, don't be offended by my comment. If you look on your own video you see that you wear no body gear, not even essentials for elbows in the first part of the video and then a short section says "gear up". That's typically what i described and what makes that comment mean nothing for people that have NOT yet crashed... Which means they will likely go down the same route we did ;-)
      As a side note, my worst crash happened about 15km/h where i didn't wear a helmet... Was just going slow (20km/h run off speed) so thought what the heck.. Its hot outside...ill skip full face helmet. Still I found myself on the ground without remembering how it happened, blood gushing out of my head, police and ambulance there in less than a minute after"waking up" except the people that helped me and asked me if i was okay and that i should NOT ride on even though i was about to... Didn't feel any pain but when they told me about my head and i saw blod pouring down on the wheel i decided it might be a good idea to visit the hospital :-) Not what i wanted but what i got from stupidity regardless of age. Manhole cover WET is my guess when i went back and rode there again.
      Anyway, in glad you promote gear anyway, lot of young riders out there look at Tarzan and the likes as idols, and think they are immortal

I'm sure you will soon have your V11 repaired although from experience its horrible to see your pride and joy all battered and scratched! ☹️...it's very disheartening!.. At least it doesnt appear to have knocked your confidence. What pressure did you have in your tyre? 🤔.... @@OWGAC Well if your tire was under pressure then that could have caused a blowout...would explain the hole in the tire. What pressure is recommended for that wheel?...For my 18XL it is around 40psi... an under-inflated tyre is just as dangerous as an over-inflated tyre and the amount of friction and heat generated on an under-inf. tyre could well cause a blowout, the manhole surface could have been the catalyst? 🤔...

      @@MichaelMutai yes i agree that it would be a problem. i'm assuming more like bindings on skis, that break away at a certain threshold. It would instantly slow the wheels momentum as well as acting as a brake initially for the fallen rider. at the point of the fall the rider and the wheel are moving at the exact same speed, milliseconds after is when the numbers change due to the wheel no longer carrying the weight of the rider and the rider no longer being carried. if there is a break away system to limit the difference it would probably move the numbers closer and reduce the damage to both objects.

    I would grab a pliers and start tear testing that tire by pulling the side studs outward. The exact oopposite way from where road impacts usually occure. My hunch is the stud got stuck in that manhole cover's gap for just enough time to tear the fabric.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  4 года назад +1

      I did check the manhole cover and did not see any thing that the tread could get stuck in, other than that rip, everything else felt normal on the tire. But I’ll try the plier test and see if anything unusual happens!

      @dzvid2746 4 года назад

      So you would rather buy a product that is not legally accredited by KS? Who will you contact for warranty, the 3rd party? Also, how can you guarantee that they are using genuine parts? Knowing some chinese manufacturers can use cloned parts. I dont see the distaste either. I mean, you will be riding this thing on the street and your safety is paramount but you would prefer to put your trust on some random dealer. Play with fire huh.

      Hi Hsiang, is the bottom part of the pedal metal hinge edge able to possibly come in contact with the tyre?
      When on landing from a height, the pedal is at its lowest height from the ground, when the tyre has been fully compressed and bulging outwards from the wheel rim, is it possible for the tyre to come in contact with the metal part of the pedal hinge?
      Perhaps check and see if it is possible to determine if the direction of the tear is from the rear end of the EUC towards the front. This would be consistent with contact made with the tyre rolling in the forward motion. Thanks.

    • @PaulA-pm3gx
      @PaulA-pm3gx 4 года назад +1

      Hi again, the location of the rip is towards the side of the tyre. Maybe examine the underside of the EUC on that side to see if there are any bits of tyre, markings, scratches, damage or any other evidence to suggest contact between tyre and EUC undercarriage anywhere. Thanks.

      I haven’t ridden for long before the crash since I just left my home, but I did have the bad habit of hitting every potholes I can reach to test out the suspension, so the failure was prob caused by those repeated hits.
