As usual, another helpful video. I'd definitely say $1200 a month is possible depending on where you want to live. There are actually some nice, fully furnished 2-bedroom condos/apartments around the country in the $400-$700 range. Of course there are cheaper and also more expensive options. A friend of mine just moved to the Punta Cana area and got a 2-bedroom just minutes to the beach for $450 a month. And I have seen even furnished houses here where I live for $500 a month with 3 bedrooms, porch, back patio, etc. Unless you spend a lot on entertainment, $1200 a month should allow for fairly comfortable living. Most people in the country don't make that type of money.

Excellent video! I know a lot of retirees may be considering doing this. However, I think this is a great option for folks working remotely that want to save as much money as possible.
Think about your monthly take-home pay and imagine keeping on this budget or a little bit more. You can even stop paying federal income tax because you no longer live in the United States.
A good strategy would be for someone to live on this budget or even $1,500 per month and then just save the rest. If they're a tech guy earning six figures they can easily say five or six thousand dollars a month.

Hello Norberis. A very good good realistic report. If you consider that 25 years ago you could still get along well with 500$ per month in la capital. It's gotten a lot more expensive. But that's more than OK. One must not forget what the infrastructure was like back then. A lot has happened in 25 years. $1200 is still not enough for me personally. For me personally I would calculate with 2000$ or even more. A part of the budget should be set aside as a safety cushion. I find it very regrettable that the increasing standard of quality of life does not reach 75% of the population. On the contrary, their quality of life often deteriorates over time.

If you have $1,200 USD coming in while you live in the DR then you are already in the 1% there. The last time I lived in Santo Domingo I lived across from Acropolis Mall, fully furnished and only had to deposit 1 month, plus pay the commission to the agent. I received my deposit when I left the apt. 2 deposits plus the "contract" payment seems like a lot. For all that money you can live in a much nicer area and have a nicer apartment. Rent is crazy now here in Santo Domingo... so glad I got my apartment when i did! I learned that even if you find a better apartment your neighbors might be noisy with the music and that makes the apartment worse than another! Some things you won't know until you have been in the apartment for a few weeks. But security and peace are priceless. For people looking for an apartment, you also have to consider furniture. Will you buy everything new? And who will deliver it? 😂😂 Or do you get the fully furnished apartment and you pay double the price? Sometimes maybe it's easier to go that route, but if you plan on really living here i don't know if renting is the best option long term.

First if you are moving to a new country understand the local economics. How much does a doctor or bus driver earn and see how you fit in with your budget.
Also we know prime real estate is expensive anywhere in the world because that is where the local rich people live or where big businesses are located. Being close to a beach adds cost so if you are healthy and can walk then you can stay a bit away from the beach can can save you money.
Also eating out a lot adds costs. Tourists areas tend to have inflated prices. You can likely find safe and secure accommodation away from the tourist hot spots. If local minimum wage is $300 which is about average in most developing nations then 4X should afford you decent living if you are not going there for just the nightlife.
