That's when a figure skating was really enjoyable to watch. Both partners are beautifully synchronized and gliding on ice. Nowadays, it's scary to watch...where you close your eyes at each throw, hoping for the female partner to land in one piece without breaking her ribs, legs or head. 🙈🙀⛸🤕
One of the best quality change sit spin - so close to each other, precise centered, equal positions, good speed and absolute synchronized! Group A of rules required for that season a 2.5 revolution lasso lift, they do more difficult axel lasso lift. Thanks to you floskate for another treasure.
Even with all that relentless power and speed-- the way he put her down after the overhead twirly thang was as soft, gentle and controled as can be. To me, that shows their mastery.
Thanks so much for posting this historically significant clip! This performance is of incredible quality, control and conviction, and this type of program-skated to Soviet film music or modern Russian classical-suited their style perfectly. So, I am going to pretend their disco transition in Lake Placid never happened...
I read they receive 15 - 5.9 and one 6.0. So for technical merit was 7 - 5.9 and 2 - 5.8? They got the same marks also in free skating (2 - 5.8, 15 - 5.9 and one 6.0)?
To be fair, no one did throws in the SP back then because they weren't a required element. If you look at all the elements that were required R&Z were clearly the best and by some way. But once Rodnina had retired a throw triple and a throw double axel as a minimum pretty much became mandatory at the top.

Zaitsev was a great partner!
Love this performance. Saw the same short at 1978 Worlds . Such great speed.
Their unison is perfect.
Well prepared, well trained team. Irina had a lovely back position in her Sit Spin. Thank you for posting this.
