This became my favorite MCU movie as soon as The Chain trailer dropped haha. Having it play twice in the movie just confirmed it. Although I would've preferred the final climax just being a full music video of the entire song :P

I always saw it as regret. During the movie, Rocket acts more like a jerk than usual, stealing the Sovereign’s batteries in spite of not needing them and arguing constantly with Quill. Moments earlier, he had insulted him by calling him “orphan boy”, a very low blow given that Quill was meeting his father for the first time in his life and this was clearly a big moment for him. Even Quill seems to note all this, which is why he asks him if he is actually trying to get everyone to hate him before saying it is working. Later on, Yondu points out that Rocket is mean to his friends as a result of his feelings of self-loathing due to his past as a rejected experiment. Because of his low self-esteem, Rocket feels he is undeserving of the love and friends he has and is afraid of being rejected, so he pushes others away in the hopes of not getting hurt by them. Here, when Quill says his plan is working, Rocket looks up at him very smugly, as if to confirm his words. However, when the others walk away, we see Rocket looking away with regret and shame. His plan to push others away is working, he is getting what he wanted, but he hates it since he is ending up all alone, hurting those he sees as friends. In the end, it is all a cycle of harm and self-harm. Rocket thinks he won’t get hurt by avoiding getting close to others, but he is still hurting himself in the end.
