      That's a fake legend. Novas sold well in Mexico and the rest of Latin America. "Nova" means the same thing in English and Spanish and it doesn't seem calling it an "exploding star" hurt sales anywhere. "No va" does mean "no go" in Spanish but that's like saying "Nomad" means calm in English. In fact, Pemex sold a "Nova" brand gasoline. Not to mention that the GM's Latin American dealers would tip off GM fast if they thought the name wouldn't sell.

      More like they were filming in the non-Chevrolet section of the junkyard. To make things easier for them to locate, junk yards kept their vehicles separated and grouped by manufacturer. I'm sure that some still do, but for the most part, now they cut the catalytic converters out, remove the engine and transmission in one shot for higher demand vehicles, tires and wheels, maybe the spare tire, headlight ant taillight assemblies, maybe the radio and that's about it. If you need something else, they'll either have it by sheer luck because it hasn't been crushed and shipped yet, or they use their part finding network to see if maybe someone else has one. Their overall goal now is to turn them over fast for the scrap metal value more than anything else, so many of them may not even have sections for different makes anymore. But back when this was filmed, most of them kept their inventory organized by make, and that's what makes it look like there are more Fords than anything else.

    • @glennso47

      According to Scotty Kilmer the junk yards are now Chevy dealerships.

    Why didn't they include a Dodge, a Chrysler, or a Cadillac in the last competition?

    • @21stcenturyfossil7
      @21stcenturyfossil7 2 года назад

      Because Chevy didn't want to dilute the message that they were BETTER than their REAL rivals, Pontiac, Buick and Olds. Stealing sales from Ford or Chrysler was nice but even better to steal sales from their GM rivals and rise in the GM hierarchy. One of the roots of GM's failure was that GM let the divisions go to war with each other.

      I would have thought so too. And that whole thing about the general public not having certain options available to them is BS too. Back in the day, ytou could go in to a new car dealer and order any car you wanted with any options or deletions you wanted. As long as the factory made that option available at all on the model you were looking at, you could order the car any way you wanted it. Your sales man would fill out the order card, get your loan approved, send your order form to the factory and a few weeks later, you would get a phone call telling you that your car had arrived. They weren't going to go outside their normal parameters and create a new color for you, but if you wanted a green car with a blue interior, as long as both were available options, you could get it that way. 4 speed doesn't come as an option on the 6 cylinder model, but that's what you want? As long as the bell housing and transmission bolts line up and the input shaft would properly spline up with the clutch, and everything would tighten up and function correctly, you could get it. You don't like carpeting and would rather have a full rubber mat instead? As long as there was a such thing as a rubber mat for that model, no problem. Back before the 90s, you could go into a dealership and get whatever you wanted, and that included fleet and interceptor options.
