  • Chevrolet hired Bonanza star Lorne Greene to host the automaker's announcement film for 1966. The film shows stunt drivers from Chitwoods Thrill team taking the cars through their paces. Also behind the scenes of a dramatic commercial and the introduction of a new V8 engine.
This film was produced by the Jam Handy Company in Detroit. Written by Bob Wicks and animation by Dick Petrovitch who later went on to win an Academy Award for "Crunchbird."

1966 was a monumental year for Chevrolet! Worthy of a monumental introduction from Lorne Greene!

Chevrolet would be great again if they would go back 56 years. GM is a fraction of it former greatness, along with our country and culture.

+Bill Tarkulich That's exactly what it was. They'd show these big budget films to all the dealers every year -- usually in Vegas. Meetings, a film or two, golf, drinks and schmoozing were all part of making sure the dealers were enthusiastic about what was coming in the Fall.

"BONAZA" convinced me on Chevrolet's and been with them ever since. ALL vehicals should have chrome bumpers, ; the BEST Safty feature ever Invented. A Chrome bumper can ALL WAYS be SEEN , PLUS they have to be bolted to something substantial;;; not "crumple zones" with Styrofoam tissue paper sheet metal & lots of cup holders. Thanks for the great Video. A Chevrolet with a frame, rear wheel drive & a V8 is "PURE perfection".

I remember when Chevrolet sponsored Bonanza and when the 1967 models were premiered Lorne Greene announced at the beginning of the show that they were not going to have commercials during the show and instead have a 5 minute program at the end of the show featuring all the new models.

It was Joie Chitwood and his Hell Drivers who inspired Evel Knievel. As a boy, he got to see them in action when they came to perform in his hometown of Butte, Montana, and that's when he knew what he wanted to be when he grew up.
Also, I've watched a lot of old Chevrolet commercials from the 1950s and 1960s and I know that the spokesperson talking about the engines from 14:57 to 18:24 did voiceovers for a lot of them (and sometimes appeared in person as well). Can anybody tell me who he is?

Those of us watching this probably love cars and if old enough already knew much of what's on this film. But the audience for this film was car salesman. I bet at least half of them couldn't tell a carburetor from a camshaft and thought the quarter mile was where you pitched quarters out the vent window while the car traveled a mile down the highway. This film was to get those guys educated enough so they at least could pretend to know something about the cars they were selling.

@@02chevyguy Well ya, I could have one and ask 100k, lol. Most people with money won't buy a restored classic because they think they break down all the time, are unreliable and can't get parts or repair shops can't do anything because they're vintage over 50 year's old, this is rubbish or as the German's say. qwatsch! I owned a 66 XL Galaxie for almost 20 years and was very reliable and fast, 360+hp, 300 hp at the tires on a dyno best at the drag strip was 13.79 with hard tires, traction wasn't that well bad 60ft but still was quick for a warmed over 390 wasn't a 427. So ya 396 I can get anything for that motor, classic cars is a multi billion dollar+ hobby lot of companies have parts IF something breaks. Just don't drive it in the winter salt and your fine it will outlast you! I want another car but am broke now I went under end of the Obama administration and lost everything even my hot rod, maybe one day.. I'm better now then 2014 but not enough to drop 20k on a vintage car
