This album feels like a ADHD Album where you're whole senses are fucking driven through the roof, then those moments of calm jazzy songs with extreme chaotic noisecore just after, it's fucking brilliant
never forget when anthony checked out Clown Core on stream as a joke, completely intending to shit all over it, only to be like "woah this actually sounds crazy" and almost disappointed that he liked it as much as he did. could sense the 7/10 gecs style review coming.
I feel like the aesthetic is as much a part of their music as the music. This is kinda like a soundtrack review. Also I don't think you being left "wanting more" is a negative, it's just them flexing on you. If you're not a masochist that's okay, it's not for you. Me myself personally I prefer to be abused by clowns.
Not even 3 seconds in and already heavily disappointed. Did not start with clownthany clowntano here and, not even wearing a clown nose. I am heavily disappointed and some would say I am...... Appalled!
"End", off of this album, is my track of 2020, no joke. There's been a few tracks that made me tear up throughout this year, but End is the only one that genuinely got me crying. Of all things to get me, it's fucking Clowncore. That exact sort of ambience, progression, the pads, the felt piano, the acoustic sounds of the piano player moving around, just managed to create this odd soundscape of looking at a sunset or a starry night sky on the countryside, where the only sound present was the wind blowing ever so lightly through the trees. And yes I'm well aware that more ambient producers and ambient tracks exists, that's a duh honestly. End just hit me differently when it comes to recent ambient tracks. It just reminded me of home, it reminded me of what it was like being a kid again, growing up with so many awesome memories of cool events, things and places, most of which are physically gone now. It's hard to explain. I think the best way I can word it, is like this: Remember the scene in Ratatouille, where Anton Ego eats at Gusteau's, and all these childhood memories came back to him? That's kinda what I went through. Van as an album is amazing, but End takes the cake. It's also just proof that you don't have to always reinvent the wheel when it comes to music (although I think it's safe to say Clowncore got that shit covered). Sometimes, the most simple progs and structures in music, can convey so many feelings and narratives towards its listener, and that is something I will forever appreciate. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.
@@ArcienPlaysGames I forgot to rate it in my new video, but i’d also give it an 8. incredibly emotive sound production for what I initially assumed to be a meme
@@ArcienPlaysGames i even added end to my normal spotify playlist which has every song I like no matter the genre. pretty surprised lol ! also I think you’d enjoy my newest video on clown c0re, i tried to encapsulate the vibe they give off in their work
I thought that it was album of the year for that year. The brevity is what it is. You enjoy it for as long as it lasts and then move on, but you can always play it again. I think it's on "Computers" that I noticed the A section ghost notes and kick are reversed for the B section. There's so much subtlety going on. A quantum music nerd field being interacted with.
IMO the best part of the album is that solo in "computers." It takes the synth and bass and drum elements that give clown core its signature sound but I think it does it in a much more put-together and complete way.
Enjoyed the hell out of this thing. I didn't mind the hard end cuts and intermittent blaring of new tracks, I felt it was really stream of consciousness to it's logical end, but this is an album im doing other things to rather than sit in front of and focus.
I just posted a video talking about this ! I view it as a potential new genre honestly, I think they’re going to steadily grow at least up until halloween
same, I just made a video about it and since there’s very little coverage of them online thus far I was surprised to see that anthony had literally JUST made a review lol
I would definitely recommend their videos to start out, they supplement the album well. I talked about it my new video about them but I think there is an interesting trend in the modern internet age, of artists making music with the intent of it being performance art and part of a visual accompaniment
Damn PLEASETHONY VOTETANO, This album made by clowns in a van is so absolutely my shit! I had not heard of them before this review. Thank you, Greenarchist
I would rate your review of this album as being equivalent to the means used to sustain the note which last the entire length of the song titled “keyboard”
I agree with sort of "novelty" it almost gets placed in. But the technicalities of the music make it so much more than a couple of guys just doing something weird
Just like the album Toilet, they did in fact record the songs on the spot in those places. You can see their mics in the port o potty in the videos. You can tell its recorded on the spot because of the moment at 4:42 in the video for the song Toilet, the way that note is hit is pretty one of a kind lol. Its part of their modern concept. Their first album was just an album recorded live in I believe a garage with weird effects, but Toilet and Van are concept perfection. Hilarious visuals, talented musicians, I love it.
i also just made a video talking about it and was absolutely shocked he happened to make a video on them at the same time lol. I didn’t realize how much theyd been growing recently
Wasn't expecting a Clown Core review from you lol I think the key to appreciating Clown Core fully is watching the videos. The music is incredible, but it's not necessarily meant to stand on its own, rather it's a portion of a performance art piece that relies on both the music and the visuals to achieve its intended effect.
I totally get the 7, and also the wanting of more on some of the songs. But I genuinely think thats where the true genius of this album (and Clown Core in general) really shines. Is the ability to give so much but still leave you with a semi. They walk the fine line that Opeth likes to walk of making each section just long enough to where you feel maybe its going on too long, but cutting it off at just the right time. But I'm just an Autistic music enjoyer.
HEY MELON DID YOU KNOW THE DRUMMER IS LOUIS COLE? ARNT I SMART THAT I KNOW THAT? I KNOW THE GUY UNDER THE MASK SO I HAVE TO TELL EVERYBODY EVERY CHANCE I GET. ITS LOUIS COLE BY THE WAY.
@@theonlywizardwashere I get it, it’s fun to unravel a mystery, and I don’t begrudge anyone trying to do that. But it’s just annoying to because 1.there seems to be a effort made to not put their names on the project. It feels like when people go out of their way to call pro wrestlers by their real names. And 2. 9 times out of 10 it feels like every time someone comments “Louis Cole” it’s like an attempt to be like “ooooo look at me I know the dudes name”. The second one might just be a pet peeve of mine or me projecting I donno.
The fun bit is, I had no idea who Louis Cole was before I ever saw a Clown Core video and any one had mentioned that. For all I care, the clowns are called Jeff and Mike.
@@DownClownTownFrown i think by keeping it anonymous, they expected this and actually thrive off the publicity that comes by people talking abt it. It's what DVSN tried to do and sorta failed at years ago
0:34 They probably composed the pieces first but I'm pretty sure the tracks you hear on the official record are the same recordings from the videos of them driving around. You can play them side by side and they sound identical.
To answer your Tik Tok question... This is your worst take ever... This record is genius compared to the steaming pile of sameness out there passing itself off music... 11/10 sorry not sorry
i entirely believe infinite realm was prerecorded, but i think end was recorded in the van then edited afterwards. you can still hear car noises and keyboard clacking, but there are also some ambient pads and background swells of white noise that were definitely not there when the song was originally recorded.
You know what Fantano? I kind of agree. I'd still bump it up to a light 8, but that's me. There are so many CC songs I wish were longer; Google Your Own Death is something I just blast on repeat on the way to work, and I wish it had another section
Notathany Mantano hits the nail on the head yet again, getting his opinion EXACTLY right and practically taking the words I would have said if I were in his shoes right out of his (my) mouth and making the video that I (he) would have loved to make.
For those of you wondering. Clown Core consists of Louis Cole on Drums and Synth, and Sam Gendel on Sax and Synth. Clown Core started back in 2009. Louis and Gendel also worked together with Louis and Gen's band, KNOWER between 2016-2019. Cole has also worked with Vulfpeck, Thundercat, and has his own Solo project that is self titled. Go check him out.

I think the best way I can word it, is like this:
Remember the scene in Ratatouille, where Anton Ego eats at Gusteau's, and all these childhood memories came back to him? That's kinda what I went through.
Van as an album is amazing, but End takes the cake. It's also just proof that you don't have to always reinvent the wheel when it comes to music (although I think it's safe to say Clowncore got that shit covered).
Sometimes, the most simple progs and structures in music, can convey so many feelings and narratives towards its listener, and that is something I will forever appreciate.
Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.
Id rate it higher than anthony I do agree that it's shortness just makes me want more
@@swingAE86 Yep, same here. It's a strong 8 from me.
@@ArcienPlaysGames I forgot to rate it in my new video, but i’d also give it an 8. incredibly emotive sound production for what I initially assumed to be a meme
@@theonlywizardwashere Same here. I went into the album completely blind, and End just surprised me so much
@@ArcienPlaysGames i even added end to my normal spotify playlist which has every song I like no matter the genre. pretty surprised lol ! also I think you’d enjoy my newest video on clown c0re, i tried to encapsulate the vibe they give off in their work
Louis Cole is on a level that few mortals can understand, it's ok Melon
I thought that it was album of the year for that year. The brevity is what it is. You enjoy it for as long as it lasts and then move on, but you can always play it again. I think it's on "Computers" that I noticed the A section ghost notes and kick are reversed for the B section. There's so much subtlety going on. A quantum music nerd field being interacted with.
IMO the best part of the album is that solo in "computers." It takes the
synth and bass and drum elements that give clown core its signature
sound but I think it does it in a much more put-together and complete
way.
Enjoyed the hell out of this thing. I didn't mind the hard end cuts and intermittent blaring of new tracks, I felt it was really stream of consciousness to it's logical end, but this is an album im doing other things to rather than sit in front of and focus.
I thought Clown Core was a new genre
You can make it so!
i mean.. basically
I mean, it may become one haha
I just posted a video talking about this ! I view it as a potential new genre honestly, I think they’re going to steadily grow at least up until halloween
@@theonlywizardwashere I’ve seen you on three posts advertising your video. I will not be looking for it. Your behavior is reprehensible.
wait, is Anthony a car nerd?
I wasn't expecting him to name drop the car used haha
Mid engine rwd the previa is a legend
They actually sold the van on their website
Also not really on twitter anthony thought a subaru wrx was a Ford with a big spoiler
The fact the toyothony prevtano recognizes a previa but not wrx means a lot and I’m here for it
@@dajjc1427 lololol
If this was a bus, you would give it a 10/10.
at minute 2 I was like "okay these are music school kids"
I literally just discovered this band 6 hours ago get out of my head anthony this is scaring me
same, I just made a video about it and since there’s very little coverage of them online thus far I was surprised to see that anthony had literally JUST made a review lol
Can we all take a moment to just appreciate that Louis Cole is an absolute monster on drums and is possibly a creative genius?
Bob dylan having a rest in the back.
Napping all along the watchtower
if you have 1:36 of free time, listen to Hell by Clowncore
I have never heard of this and I don't think I've ever been more excited to check out an album
I would definitely recommend their videos to start out, they supplement the album well. I talked about it my new video about them but I think there is an interesting trend in the modern internet age, of artists making music with the intent of it being performance art and part of a visual accompaniment
The very fact you're featuring CC is a redeeming quality even though you poorly rated it.
10/10
Calzone will not be tolerated
Damn PLEASETHONY VOTETANO,
This album made by clowns in a van is so absolutely my shit!
I had not heard of them before this review.
Thank you,
Greenarchist
Clown core was the music we didn't know we needed.
I need clown core merch NOW!
I would rate your review of this album as being equivalent to the means used to sustain the note which last the entire length of the song titled “keyboard”
Wow Clown Core got the 7/10. Kinda happy about this.
for those of you speculating if KNOWER is behind this; the video tags on the clown core videos include “KNOWER”, “Louis Cole”, and “ Genevieve Artadi”
Least favorite track: SONG
ME: Anthony, you can't just put Song and expect us to know what song you're talking about. 🤦♂️
Thank you for introducing me to these guys! They’re on to something. They remind me of Lightning Bolt interrupted by a contemporary jazz artist.
I agree with sort of "novelty" it almost gets placed in. But the technicalities of the music make it so much more than a couple of guys just doing something weird
Sometimes I love the things you introduce us to.
Sometimes I hate them.
Im feeling both rn.
I bet my subscribers feel the same, I just made a video on clown c0re and sometimes I feel bad exposing people to
such absurdly lol
Pretty sure the humming of the van is just recorded room tone added in to make it feel live.
I think you’re correct ! I now wish I would have mentioned that in my video about them 🤦🏽♂️
Just like the album Toilet, they did in fact record the songs on the spot in those places.
Wow I can’t believe Melon didn’t like “Song” they’re all songs 🤦♂️ , what a bad take 0/10
Anthony Fantano the type of guy to watch Doug DeMuro
im so happy to SEE CLOWN CORE HERE LETS GO
i also just made a video talking about it and was absolutely shocked he happened to make a video on them at the same time lol. I didn’t realize how much theyd been growing recently
This is what a perfect album sounds like.
I can’t believe you gave my relationship a light 4. She’s my first girlfriend, come on man :(
Lmao
You said on the joji stream you didn't know who clowncore was and now you're reviewing it. Amazing
Let it be known that Fantano gave an album about clowns a higher score than MBDTF.
Let that sink in.
What does it want now?
Wasn't expecting a Clown Core review from you lol
I think the key to appreciating Clown Core fully is watching the videos. The music is incredible, but it's not necessarily meant to stand on its own, rather it's a portion of a performance art piece that relies on both the music and the visuals to achieve its intended effect.
BEST ALBUM COVER EVER
I totally get the 7, and also the wanting of more on some of the songs. But I genuinely think thats where the true genius of this album (and Clown Core in general) really shines. Is the ability to give so much but still leave you with a semi. They walk the fine line that Opeth likes to walk of making each section just long enough to where you feel maybe its going on too long, but cutting it off at just the right time. But I'm just an Autistic music enjoyer.
GET LOUIS COLE ON THE PHONE
Love the cover of Dylan's BLONDE ON BLONDE in the background. You might say that "Rainy Day Women #12 and 35" was the original Clown Core...
HEY MELON DID YOU KNOW THE DRUMMER IS LOUIS COLE? ARNT I SMART THAT I KNOW THAT? I KNOW THE GUY UNDER THE MASK SO I HAVE TO TELL EVERYBODY EVERY CHANCE I GET. ITS LOUIS COLE BY THE WAY.
to be fair, very little is known about them as a whole and I think people are just excited to share info. it does get repetitive though
@@DownClownTownFrown I agree with both points honestly. cheers !
Melon, review Kill Lincoln’s “Can’t Complain”. There is a pretty big audience who is getting back into ska punk.
Didn't expect to see Kill Lincoln here! Love those guys!
Didn't expect this review to introduce me to my new fav band but here we are
day 7 of bothering melon to review YMS's album: REVIEW 10 YEARS ALREADY!!!
Was worried Anthony wasn’t gonna get it, as he hasn’t with similar albums. But yes he got it, I’m proud.
same, anthony can be tone deaf sometimes
Specifically, his review of the last meshuggah album.
@@theonlywizardwashere that’s been the case I feel for his Garden reviews.
To answer your Tik Tok question... This is your worst take ever... This record is genius compared to the steaming pile of sameness out there passing itself off music... 11/10 sorry not sorry
Clown Core is the only band that could write music for a Gran Turismo home screen AND a Twisted Metal arena battle.
This album is unironically better than MBDTF
i entirely believe infinite realm was prerecorded, but i think end was recorded in the van then edited afterwards. you can still hear car noises and keyboard clacking, but there are also some ambient pads and background swells of white noise that were definitely not there when the song was originally recorded.
Just because they called you out for luring kids into your van with candy doesnt mean you have to give it a 3,Melon
From someone who likes music too, nice Boris album. I didn't even realize it was in the background until half way through the vid
Everyone always asks, "who is Clown Core?", or "what is Clown Core?" But they never ask...
*How is Clown Core*
You know what Fantano? I kind of agree. I'd still bump it up to a light 8, but that's me. There are so many CC songs
I wish were longer; Google Your Own Death is something I just blast on repeat on the way to work, and I wish it had another section
Plot twist: He's a unmasked band member promoting his own album.
This is a crossover I was not ready for
Notathany Mantano hits the nail on the head yet again, getting his opinion EXACTLY right and practically taking the words I would have said if I were in his shoes right out of his (my) mouth and making the video that I (he) would have loved to make.
Btw, they did do this shit in the van. It's kinda the whole special thing about it. They did compose it all before hand but it's recorded in there.
Hey Anthony I didn’t realized you were sponsored by Drake’s son. That’s pretty cool
Its an 8 melon. A decent 8. And I'm posting this inside of a van.
god i love you for this.
Same
This is coming from the same guy that said Dunkey didn't get the high score on Bowser's Big Bean Burrito.
I thought this was just a new subgenre of Trap music for a minute: Guys dressed as clowns rapping over a trap beat with circus music
Insane Clown Pose?
That sounds actually amazing
For those of you wondering. Clown Core consists of Louis Cole on Drums and Synth, and Sam Gendel on Sax and Synth. Clown Core started back in 2009. Louis and Gendel also worked together with Louis and Gen's band, KNOWER between 2016-2019. Cole has also worked with Vulfpeck, Thundercat, and has his own Solo project that is self titled. Go check him out.
“It’s hard to say if I like it given I don’t know what race these guys are”
Wow Anthony, just wow
I am only enduring this as the tune toilet is playing in a separate window
Melon, why won't you talk about the new Marilyn Manson record?
4/10
The honks dynamics/placement come clearly from Beach Boys "Still Beleive in Me" - LC is a great BB fan
