I've been playing drums more than 50 years. I love how Louis embraced his heroes and plays the way he wants. When I was a kid, everyone always tried to get me to stop playing so busy. He's like, "I'll do what I want. This is how I play."
Exactly! Imitate and break down what you like best, and develop into the drummer you want to be, not someone else's idea of a drummer. You never stop learning, that's the beauty of drumming. If every drummer stuck to rigid structure and the rule book, drumming would never have evolved as it has done.

Louis Cole is the nicest guy I’ve met and one of my favorite modern musicians. I’ll never forget the NYC show when he invited me to another secret show at a different club. What an awesome human being.
Only 8 min into the episode and I already love it. Louis is able to give a fine balance between playing and talking, during the conversation. I mean, he doesn't talk too much while leaving us wanting to hear some drum playing, and at the same time he plays just enough to make a point on what he's talking about. Amazing!
Hearing Louis Cole made me pick up the drums again after a few years away. He made me want to fail in a cooler way, too! The joy he plays with is infectious.
The more I see and hear from Louis Cole, the more it becomes apparent that he is one of the greatest musicians of not just his generation but many generations. What a cool guy too.
What bothers me about Louis is how he’s mainly a drummer, yet can play the keys so well that it makes me, a classically trained pianist, look like a novice. Amazing musician.
@@aidanschram9652 Chick Corea had a way of thinking liek that - fingers are ten drummers, as he said. He played drums too. Not saying its the same, just that on the level of those dudesit is all music.

It's so interesting and fun hearing three detail-obsessed musicians talking about the real subtle stuff: micro-timing, little variations in grip of stick or pick, Louis's thing about sleeping with a metronome under his pillow 😂 And I'm sitting here pretty much unable to hear the timing differences in the samples they're talking about. They really are on another level, and I love the enthusiasm with which they geek out about it.

18:50 so glad that I wasn't the only one that spent lockdown doing this. I went as far as filming my picking in slow motion which was a whole rabbit hole to go down.
2 года назад
Lol, I didn’t exactly do it during the lockdown but it’s certainly a topic visited multiple times in my playing. I’ve kind of switched from a more anchored to floating picking hand technique, but every time I visit “how to hold the pick” the result is always “how most guitarists seem to hold their pick does not work AT ALL for me”. I don’t know if it’s true but many seem to hold the pick against like the first or second joint of their index finger? (I hold it against the fingertip more.) I just can’t do that. Maybe it has advantages, maybe not. Either way it’s way too late and not worth it to change at this point I feel. I do alter my grip when strumming compared to picking single notes too… but that’s something I’ve been doing for a long time too which I wasn’t even aware of doing until recently so can’t really tell if good or bad. 😅
Louis Cole is a massive inspiration to me. He’s one of the few open handed drummers that are well known which I always thought was awesome because I’m also open handed! It was really cool to hear where his inspirations came from
One day I was listening to Louis Cole and sent it to a friend of mine. "Oh, you should check this" he said, and sent me back a video of "Scary Pockets". Today, I found out that these guys are connected. Wonderful how synchronization works. Thanks world! Thanks music!

Every time I share Louis Cole's music with non-musicians, many times I get this weird blank reaction - they just do not get it. Show the same material to musicians and the reaction is immediate: they are blown away and instantly subscribe to his channel and seek out more of his stuff. That says it all, really.
@@TastyLaserCakes My own guess is simple wavelength - a lot of peeps are trained to accept certain formats and styles because that is all they know - when they hear something that breaks outside those safe boundaries they just don't know what to do with it. Musicians, because they delve deeper (and are, in theory, more creative), are more accustomed to looking beyond the norm and appreciate a vanguard with ingenuity when one breaks through the mundane. I think musicians might better appreciate the technical qualities too. And so we embrace Mr. Cole.
I'm not a musician, and when I learned about Louis Cole my mind was absolutely blown away yesterday which is the first I've ever heard of him. That said, I'm a visual artist and I've always been into a wide variety of music and have a very open mind. I think maybe having an open mind and even a basic understanding of how music is made will go a long way to appreciating Louis Cole.
I discovered Louis Cole on my Facebook feed. It was his song “Bank Account” about 6 years ago. It was the funk in his sound that grabbed my attention. Then I searched him on RUclips and when I heard is music as a solo and as Knower, I’ve been a fan since!

Great interview with one of today’s top drummers! So glad I heard him in Mannheim last Sunday, standing front row directly in front of his drum set ❤️. Un-f…ing-believable ability!
People theorize that Cole is the anonymous drummer of Clown Core and now hearing that he likes to put a cymbal on his snare, just like the dude in Clown Core does, has me convinced. Also because they are both insanely talented.
Louis Cole has already said he doesn't KNOW who Clown Core are, and the fact that the drummer in clown core uses the very same snare setup, kit configuration, right foot technique, cymbal bell technique, drum patterns, open handed technique, body posture, and has the same body frame and neck, does NOT mean he is Louis Cole.
Great interview, especially about how one has to work with their own body. Not all of us are blessed with the ability to play exactly correctly for hours a day! So it’s inspiring to hear someone like Louis talk about working around his physical limitations.
My absolute favorite thing with all the guests is that they're willing to try to mimic what they hear...and most have the background to succeed which is WILD. I just love listening to every episode and feeling like a fly on the wall as people nerd out about music. I would love to hear more thoughts about how you guys feel about artists with very wide/large instrumentation and what it brings to the music. You touched on it briefly in the September video about Earth Wind & Fire, but I've been wondering about this since I heard Aim and Ignite by fun.
22:30 that's the first thought i had! It reminds me of a marching band drum line. Especially when he does the de-tune of the kick! Great video. Thanks!
Man I love hearing this guy talk about Buddy Rich. Mostly because of my old high school band teacher (shout out Mr. Vespa!) I associate Buddy Rich with Gene Krupa and I would love an episode about him and old-ass drums.
I mean... drum sets were barely around since like the 1890s. But yeah I think it started with crazy snare work and then branched out. There were a few ragtime drummers who got recorded. Check out Buddy Gilmore with I think the James Reese Europe band.
GOD LOUIS COLE. He's been one of my biggest inspirations since I've found his music. The totally unique sound between DnB and funk is something that I can only dream of emulating...
This is my first episode of watching this show. It's great and what an amazing guest to discover this show on! Louis Cole is one of my all-time favorite drummers and hearing him speaking to his influences makes so much sense! Thank you, I'm excited to continue watching more great interviews.
Ryan, I never knew you played on Baby I Don’t Know with Vulf. that was an amazing discovery. always loved the guitar parts in that song. keep doing what u guys do :)
I especially love how Louis (and our esteemed interviewers) open up about how we try to emulate our idols and fail, simply because of anatomy. I did this for years and didn't understand why I was failing. As Louis says, the smart track is to embrace your weird body and its limits and play to its strengths. That's where your signature sound will come from.
Keith Carlock's trad grip thing is wild! Nobody sounds like him, I got to see him live in Kolkata with Wayne Krantz and Tim Lefebvre as a teenager over a decade ago, and safe to say, I've not been ok since XD love that Louis was inspired by him! So frikkin cool
I would so love to show this Video to my to sons , both drummers......6 and 8.5 year young ........but it sounds like i have to wait another 10 years LOL.......meanwhile they listen to Tony on 7 Steps to Heaven, and Jack with Keith and Roy with Metheny and Chick ......Love you guys , i know you had Fun doing that video. Good stuff
Louis Cole with the earplugs.. protecting the hearing. Respecc. I literally can't play the drums for shit unless I have my plugs in. It's like the super loudness and high frequencies make me play more timid. But if it's muted a bit I can go all out.
I love the adjectives you guys use (soupy, organic) - I've been an amateur musician (and listener) for a while, and there were some musicians for whom I naturally went towards some kind of food-based description. E.g. whenever I l hear Paul Chambers (Miles bassist on Kind of Blue), I instantly felt his tone was 'edible' in some way and I couldn't justify why!
Another great video by PMR. Louis is a great guest and has a unique vocabulary regarding some of his and other drummers licks. This was a deep dive into getting to know what Louis is about. More of the same please.
That was def not JoJo Mayer in that photo lol. But this was one of my favorite episodes. So many incredible drummers referenced. I use to watch that Keith Carlock performance from the Modern Drummer Festival on repeat (along with JoJo’s). Keep the drummer content coming!
Oh my god, what a joy to hear some guys talking about serious drumming. This is so refreshing, so light and so absolutely right. Thank you so much!!! Louis is a beast, let's face it.
That's... not Jojo Mayer. But seriously this was a great video. I LOVE Keith Carlock, in particular the Wayne Krantz and Lincoln Goines/Tim Lefebvre stuff. There's some stellar north sea jazz footage knocking around

You touched on it briefly in the September video about Earth Wind & Fire, but I've been wondering about this since I heard Aim and Ignite by fun.
22:30 that's the first thought i had! It reminds me of a marching band drum line. Especially when he does the de-tune of the kick! Great video. Thanks!
soo much fun watching you guys with LC. It just feels like good friends catching up! Super engaging to watch!
I love what Louis had to say about Buddy Rich. Louis Cole Rules!
Man I love hearing this guy talk about Buddy Rich.
Mostly because of my old high school band teacher (shout out Mr. Vespa!) I associate Buddy Rich with Gene Krupa and I would love an episode about him and old-ass drums.
That era is so cool to me because the drum set had just barely been invented yet people were absolute rippers even by modern standards
I mean... drum sets were barely around since like the 1890s.
Even more Louis Cole! You are the best! 🥳
Please just one more with Drums + Keyboard coordination like in Clown Core!

Awesome guy Louis is, awesome series, thank you.
Incredible video to contribute to our cultural heritage. Thank you! Keep this going please.❤️🙏🏼
He said he has tinnitus so I'm sure he doesn't want it to get worse.
@3:00 it sounds like Louis says, 'it's so agrooving to me' and I thought he found a new word instead of attracting.
This is the most wonderful gift you could do to me !!
Thank you to all 3, it's a blessing to listen/look/enjoy !
Another great video by PMR. Louis is a great guest and has a unique vocabulary regarding some of his and other drummers licks. This was a deep dive into getting to know what Louis is about. More of the same please.
Amazing. Thanks to all!
Best episode yet! More Louis. Please and thank you
I absolutely love the way you guys made this video. Everything is organized in the optimal way.
Thanx alot for this interview lads....topshelf...🍻....
More Louis Cole is always welcomed! Going to be adding new artists to my playlist now :)
I really like this guy, he looks so humble. It's a pleasure to listen to you guys talking about music. Please, do it again ! I don"t know maybe about your favorits keyboards players ! Yes that's a good idea, dont you think ?
