This was The Body Shop's own brand 'fronted' by Barbara Daly & called 'Colourings'. It was one of, if not the first cruelty free beauty brand in the world. Due to this & its affordable price level, some of it wasn't great to use, the foundation wasn't great, it didn't cover very well & needed very careful application. The blue sponge was unhelpful as the surface was very open & it could leave streak marks if you weren't careful, the powder was rather talcy & the concealer was somewhat hard. However, the rest of the range was quite competent, useable & great value, I used some of the brushes for many years. Makeup, due to technology, has improved massively since this, but Babs' tips are still current to this day, everything else is just a passing fad!
The fact that they wanted you to adjust your tv’s colors to match the contrast, brightness, etc… that the makeup tutorial was filmed in, took thoughtful consideration of the film crew and MUA. Kuddos to them!
Barbara Daly was Princess Diana's make up artist for a while. She did her wedding make up as well. Diana had a fondness for blue eyeliner and blue eyeshadow, because she had blue eyes, but Barbara taught her to use shades of brown instead.

Stephen Manton Mary Greenwall is such a lady, I adore her so much. She did a few looks on Lisa Eldridge's channel and they were so beautiful and natural
I think she started doing Diana's makeup when she cut her hair off with Sam McKnight and started doing photo shoots with Patrick Demarchelier and Mario Testino.
This was shot in 1987 & released in 1988. Not everyone, in fact most people, didn't walk down the street, at 8 in the morning, with day-glo neon makeup, the 80's is very misunderstood.

I really enjoyed watching this. So many techniques that are used today, which I had actually thought were new trends. It sounds like The Body Shop had more natural lip products back then - wish they were like that today!
She is a real, talented artist. Love this. Very refreshing to see after watching so many new age, heavy makeup tutorials. I’m taking lots of great tips from this.
Absolutely love this ♥ it makes me think of how my mom did her makeup back in the 80s. she was so lovely and classy she wore her make up natural like this and she was so beautiful
I was so surprised to see this video! I still have this VHS tape somewhere that I bought in my twenties a I'll see if I can find it! Barbara Daly was so amazing, as well as Colourings for Body Shop she created Make Up for Tesco. A really good value make up that pretty anyone could afford and some of it innovative at the time especially for less expensive ranges. Also many of the techniques she uses here weren't yet used by most women at the time but are much more common now. Many of her techniques for the older model are still relevant today. I could use them myself as I am now 56 :). Her point that less is more and softening you look as you age is much easier now that products are more refined and more pleasant to use today especially in high street cosmetics. I often used to do my friends make up at the time and my mum if she was going to an occasion as she wasn't really into make up. I would have loved to have been a make up artist myself as I always had an interest in it - making scrapbooks from the beauty pages of magazines of different techniques and looks and trying them on myself as the youtubers do today. It's such fun to watch these now and catch up with the modern techniques and products. Enjoy :)
Wow.. I remember what an impact Barbara Daly had on us in the uk in the 80s. As far as I can recall, she was the first person to teach us things like putting highlighter on the Cupid’s bow, more than one colour around the eyes... and indeed using eyeshadow colours that are complementary to one’s eye colour. She was quite a revolutionary in those days. I have to say I like the softer more natural look of her make up, rather than the harsh-browed, over highlighted and contoured faces Much of RUclips encourages us to have these days. I love those soft and natural eyebrows!
This brings me back to a Mary Kay class i took on makeup application back in the early 2000s. I thought it was "old school" but realize as I've gotten older than these are just simple, classic techniques.
This Video is amazing, and this lady Barbara Daly is such a professional. I love her voice and her teaching method, this is probably one of the best makeup tutorials ever made. EVER...
Just watching this again, because - and I am very appreciative of how she speaks of brown eyes. There's no putting them down or speaking of them like an aferthought 'strength of colour' is such a nice way to put it.
@@Chillmax well yes! i just thought since it was from the 80s, it’d have outdated techniques or something. but they hold up well until today, maybe even better than some of the tips that current makeup “influencers” are preaching about haha 😊
@@ransim4025 Yes, I see, the reason this doesn't seem to be out dated, is because Barbara was doing everyday, beauty, rather than faddy fashion looks, so it has stood the test of time very well.
This make-up artist was so talented, she made these women look great, I was so impressed! I thought this was going to be laughable compared to now, but most of her tips would still work today. I'd be down to see a beauty guru watch this video & try to re-create the look, with as many of the same products they could find on the internet (or similar items if they couldn't find the exact ones).
She's very right about purples and greys looking extra beautiful on brown eyes. Everyone compliments my eyes when I wear a purple smokey eye especially. My eyes are very dark brown almost black, so jewel tones really pop.
I love how totally timeless the advice in this video is, even though the styles have changed drastically since the 80's and makeup products have improved immensely. The artist presenting this information is really great, she explains things very clearly and has a really calming voice... I wish I had a video like this when I started wearing makeup in the early 90's, I had many years of questionable makeup application lol.
Why is everyone saying that we wear way too much makeup today as compared to the '80's? THIS is a more subtle look, but the '80's were known for being loud, colorful, vibrant and excessive. We wore a TON of makeup back then, as well...this is just a less obvious application. Check out movies from that era. We had our over the top circus makeup looks then, too!
This was more of the Christie Brinkley style of makeup, but there were many, many others that were famous and wore vividly wild colors. The pastel eyeliners, eyeshadow and mascara look of the "mod" '60's was back in at the time...and that was NOT fresh and natural lol!
This is a great video. Barbara Daly wasn't just Princess Diana's makeup artist; she did make up for the films A Clockwork Orange and Barry Lyndon. She worked with some of the biggest photographers of the 1960s, including David Bailey and Snowden, on shoots with iconic models Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton. This natural look really is best for quotidian life. I think everyone is so much into filters and looking good for the 'gram that they forget contour and highlight just looks like stripes in real life. Blending is key. Thanks for sharing.
I love her voice! I like how she encourages to use less rather than more. I like how she addresses caked makeup and wrinkles and how to work with that.
The best thing about makeup/fashion trends in general is that it comes and goes. In the video she explained that winged liner looked "old-fashioned" and now it's a popular thing to do. Right now the popular makeup trend is excessive eyeshadow/eyeliner/highlighting/contouring but before you know it this makeup look in the video will become popular again.
I love 80s natural makeup, they look dewy and very soft glam. The finished looks have a frosted glow about them, can't really explain it, but it looks beautiful.
Besoaria secondaccount that's is just one look that most girls seem to prefer now. doesn't mean is the only one.. there are many tutorial for a minimal fresh look. just got to look those up. or Korean makeup tutorial they are all about minimal fresh.
Besoaria secondaccount I know, I'm tired of seeing girls who normally wouldn't have much of an eyebrow walking around with giant, drawn on, fake looking arched brows.
i wish people would stop saying things like "girls today should watch this, they wear too much makeup" and stuff like that. things change. makeup has been applied so many different ways throughout history, and i think if we stuck to one way of doing things people would get bored. 30 years from now someone could be watching a video from today and say the same things you're saying about this.
juliabyers girl I was reading some comments I'm like what's it to You? seriously they act like someone took there cookies. it's just makeup and it's fun. calm down lol
what's wrong with looking like drag? if that's what they want. is not your face why do people care. i don't wear lots of makeup everyday and sometimes i do but that's my choice. that's what great about makeup and different styles. i see girls walking with such huge highlight but that's its not my face so i don't care.
My daughter and her friends are looking for a good 80's makeup guide for their Halloween costumes this year (because of Stranger Things, of course) and I sent her this. I remember watching this as a part of my store training back in the mid 90's too. 😂 A great walk down memory lane. I also showed her how to use two tones of blue or gray eye liner a'la Princess Diana. It's been so much fun. She's helped give me a modern glam big cat eye ruby nose makeover too. Some people are complaining about hoe modern makeup is overdone but I love seeing how our personal expressions come through. We're even working on modifying a 1930's style makeover with a modern twist. Some kids are starting to reject the huge inflated lips look and trying out the 20's&30's cupid's bow technique. But the bottom line with makeup: Have fun and express yourself! No look is "wrong" if you enjoy it! 🥰
I don't think this will help anyone to create an over the top look for Halloween, maybe the Donna Mills (Knots Landing) beauty video would be better, lots of blues & pinks. The thing that would do it, that most can't recreate, is a big frizzy curly perm. Good luck.
This may be almost 40 years old, but the premises and instructions are actually really solid and still very relevant. Shows I guess that foundational skills really haven't changed.
My mother had this video when I was a child. I learned how to apply makeup watching it. Of course, I don't go through this much trouble on a daily basis, but it's solid advice.
Classy 80s. Always the best. Women look like themselves and elegant. I can’t wait to see the natural look back and I also hope that this frenzy and arrogant trend of video making will end one day or another...
Ivette we all do. I was a 79 baby and I can't tell if I remember the 80's as the best era because I was little of course but no it's really was! The clothes are still making rounds, the songs! The movies!! Cartoons and toys lol it was the start, the beginning of the things we have today but innocent all the way around.
i grew up with people who loved the 80s like my parents hahah they were born in the 60's and they said the 80's was their favorite decade. my brother was born 89 but he likes the history of the decade too haha. i'm so jealous of those who were teens and adults during that decade. i LOVE it.
I am not kidding when I say this is brilliant. I'm cosplaying an anime character based in the late 80s (this looks to be late 80s) and couldn't find a tutorial that gave me an appropriate color pallette to work with, this is perfect.
I'm glad it was entertaining & helpful for you and indeed it was filmed around 1987. Just a note though, and as someone who was there, most women's makeup didn't usually look this good or as well applied. It's wasn't generally the rainbow nightmare that people portray it as, but the women who did wear makeup, usually applied it heavier than this and not subtlety applied either. It would be a bright or dark lip, strong blusher, perhaps a pearlescent eyeshadow, with black eyeliner & lots of black mascara. If you really want an 80's look, you'll know you've got it right, as when you've done it, you probably won't like it 😆.
I love it. this is how I do makeup on my clients. very natural just apply it where its need it to enhance their natural beauty. I'm not into all that contouring and heavy concealer trends of now a days that is not for everybody I feel like it's a mask.

This woman was truly ahead of her time
Ah yes the electric blue mascara, I knew you well in the 80s. This was a fun look back in time.
I just realized how much I love the 80's from the fact that an intro music for a makeup tutorial excites me so much
She is a real, talented artist. Love this. Very refreshing to see after watching so many new age, heavy makeup tutorials. I’m taking lots of great tips from this.
I like how she said "don't use blush to face shape" when in the 80s was notorious for that. 😂
We used "rouge" cream under over foundation (before powdering) blush powder and bronzer.
she didn't do that though ,
Yeah, she was there to tell you what ‘fashion’ looks weren’t good in reality
Enjoy :)
i worked with her in the 80s and also stood in for her at a tesco event.. although i didnt look much like her with a beard
@@shelleydavis1040 Why not open a RUclips channel now? 😊
Anyone else get asmr watching this lol?
Abby Does Witchcraft Yes lots of people have said that 😄
Abby Does Witchcraft yupppppppp
Where's the makeup at?
My 8 year old wrote that fyi... she said why does she keep wiping it off?
Yessss. I fell asleep 5 mins in and then woke up and half of the video was over lol
EVER...
Beauty basics 101. These techniques are still preached on youtube today. This also old skool ASMR.
It's amazing how relevant this is. The techniques have changed very little over the years.
Susanne - RangerMommy If it ain't broke why fix it 😄
I was 14 years by the time this video was made. I love remembering that time....
And this video is way better than nowadays make up tutorials!
I love how spongey the sponge is
Watching this on my 1989 RCA tv makes me heart whole
You have a 1989 RCA tv?
Thats amazing!
How do you keep it working?
The tip about keeping your eyes open as you line them is brilliant! It really helped me.
Barbara daly was THE make up guru in the 80’s she always seemed like a lovely person too
I love the simplicity of those years
I remember the first make up line from THE BODY SHOP called COLOURINGS. I remember using most of them when in high school at late 80s. Amazing line.
That's right, as I said in my pinned answer, this is Colourings!
Yes!!!! It was an amazing line! Have kept some vintage pieces.
Her voice is heaven!
She sounds a bit like Diana
Just watching this again, because - and I am very appreciative of how she speaks of brown eyes. There's no putting them down or speaking of them like an aferthought 'strength of colour' is such a nice way to put it.
this is so cool, i was surprised a lot of her tips are still commonly used today
@@ransim4025 Well faces haven't changed, so neither has common sense advice and techniques 😁.
Idk why but her voice just sounds so peaceful, I watched it all and didn't even noticed
I was just thinking about how ladies wore blue shadows back then my mom always wore blues. Your right it was alot of vibrant colors back then
at least they had real eyebrows haha
mel vaughn vulgar people didn't really had a crazy makeup everyday, that's just in hollywood!
numbgore true. even now. i don’t see much girls with crazy amount of makeup, just a few.
This is beautiful and I think this is real meaning of using makeup. It is soft and natural.
I love 80s natural makeup, they look dewy and very soft glam. The finished looks have a frosted glow about them, can't really explain it, but it looks beautiful.
Barbara Daly was also the makeup artist for A Clockwork Orange.
And Bowie, this is her work - ruclips.net/video/bjC7j8cNQ2k/видео.html
I like this type of looks more than the crazy current ones with obvious contouring & gigantic gradient eyebrows...
Besoaria secondaccount that's is just one look that most girls seem to prefer now. doesn't mean is the only one.. there are many tutorial for a minimal fresh look. just got to look those up. or Korean makeup tutorial they are all about minimal fresh.
Besoaria secondaccount and fake lashes and heavy contouring.
Besoaria secondaccount I know, I'm tired of seeing girls who normally wouldn't have much of an eyebrow walking around with giant, drawn on, fake looking arched brows.
Those eyebrows are cancer!
I watch a video by a lovely French lady who refers to drawn on brows as "caterpillars", and big lashes as "spiders"! Lol..!😉😁
i wish people would stop saying things like "girls today should watch this, they wear too much makeup" and stuff like that. things change. makeup has been applied so many different ways throughout history, and i think if we stuck to one way of doing things people would get bored. 30 years from now someone could be watching a video from today and say the same things you're saying about this.
juliabyers girl I was reading some comments I'm like what's it to You? seriously they act like someone took there cookies. it's just makeup and it's fun. calm down lol
Jade Felina exactly
girls absolutely should watch this, and stop making up their face like drag queens. it's embarrassing.
Chanel Oberlin on stage, maybe, just like today. But people didn't actually walk around the city looking like Madonna, unless they were scene.
what's wrong with looking like drag? if that's what they want. is not your face why do people care. i don't wear lots of makeup everyday and sometimes i do but that's my choice. that's what great about makeup and different styles. i see girls walking with such huge highlight but that's its not my face so i don't care.
Honestly this video hypnotizes me
It’s just so calming
Not into the 80's at all, but this makeup tutorial is way more wearable and classy than today's standards.
Well, this video was made in the 80s and it's more like a natural look (I know the 80s were like loud and colorful haha)
@@Paula-rq1sc it was actually mostly like this. Perhaps a blue eyeliner or bright pink lipstick once in a while, but mostly natural.
1:32 looks like a Lana Del Rey album cover
MITCHELL WIGGS never disrespect vintage makeup tutorials like that ever again
Never disrespect Lana Del Rey album covers like that again
b wrong
Mia am I tho Lana Del Rey is a legend
Na more like 1:39
The old-school Body Shop products! the little clear plastic lash comb! The memories... :D
My mother had this video when I was a child. I learned how to apply makeup watching it. Of course, I don't go through this much trouble on a daily basis, but it's solid advice.
Idk how I end up here but her voice is making me sleepy. 😂
I love watching these videos at 1:30AM I find them so relaxing 😌👌🥰
This is so relaxing wow I started watching at 12:00 pm and I fell asleep and woke up at 3:00 pm
Classy 80s. Always the best. Women look like themselves and elegant. I can’t wait to see the natural look back and I also hope that this frenzy and arrogant trend of video making will end one day or another...
i LOVE the 80's oh my god!!
Ivette we all do. I was a 79 baby and I can't tell if I remember the 80's as the best era because I was little of course but no it's really was! The clothes are still making rounds, the songs! The movies!! Cartoons and toys lol it was the start, the beginning of the things we have today but innocent all the way around.
i grew up with people who loved the 80s like my parents hahah they were born in the 60's and they said the 80's was their favorite decade. my brother was born 89 but he likes the history of the decade too haha. i'm so jealous of those who were teens and adults during that decade. i LOVE it.
Ivette 80s kid here :D
Trisha H I was born in ‘79 also. This is the makeup I remember. No one wore bizarre makeup, except for rock bands!
Born in 86, and damn proud. 80's born are the most stylish. ♡
I'm not into all that contouring and heavy concealer trends of now a days that is not for everybody I feel like it's a mask.
it really is lmao
Ya know..now that I'm almost forty I fee the same way..it just seems to sit heavier on ur face the older u get doesnt it
Still very relevant in 2017 amazing pointers
1980!! Omg she is like a blueprint of makeup😍💯🪄🎨
I remember the old Body Shop packaging. I guess that makes me old :)
Andrea Kälin r
At 53 I just learned so much. Great video so easy to understand!!
This is an excellent tutorial even useful today. Less is more peeps 😁
