  • Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
    Symphony No. 84 in E-flat major ("In Nomine Domini"), H. I/84 (1786)
    00:00 - Largo - Allegro
    07:41 - Andante
    15:34 - Menuet: Allegretto - Trio
    18:23 - Finale. Vivace
The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, dir. Sigiswald Kuijken
"Symphony No. 84 opens with a majestic and beautiful Largo, while the ensuing Allegro is one of the most neatly worked-out and highly intellectual movements [among the Paris Symphonies]. The slow movement is a subtle Andante, with a contrasting section designed to offset the enigmatic quality of the first section; towards the end is a cadential six-four chord followed by a brilliant solo wind section with pizzicato strings, constituting a truly sophisticated cadenza. The Menuet is more Austrian than most of the dance movements in these symphonies; the snap of the upbeat has something particularly Viennese about it. The Finale (Vivace) is written in the manner of the fast movements of No. 82; the violins often race ahead in semiquavers, supported by a bass line in quavers. But it also has a mysterious and highly effective contrasting 'pp' section that broadens considerably upon its reappearance in the recapitulation." - H.C. Robbins Landon

Known in Los Angeles as the "Watch" Symphony. We're not wasting any time here letting the world know that this is the name we have bestowed on this timeless masterpiece. Finer even than a Rolex.

Sublime Symphony. This composition is one of Haydn's pinnacle works. Haydn is a paragon of delight. Sensitivity and with rhythmical effect resonating beauty.

    Sorry! I erred. I meant to mention 103 symphonies - not 102

Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) composed *107* Symphonies from Symphony 1 in 1757, to Symphony 104 of 1795.
Symphonies 1-104 are catalogued as Hob. I:1-104
      Symphony ‘A’ is Hob. I:107
      Symphony ‘B’ is Hob. I:108
The overture to Le pescatrici is a symphony in all but name and is Hob. I:106.
(The missing Hob.I:105 is the Sinfonia Concertante).
Symphonies ‘A’, ‘B’, and Hob.1:106 were added to the canon of Haydn symphonies during the 20th century, and after the familiar 1-104 list was compiled by Eusebius Mandyczewski in 1907; this list was adopted - in spite of known errors - by Anthony van Hoboken in the now universally used Haydn catalogue, simply to avoid confusion.
