Best mechanic tech channel on RUclips
Yes his vids are on point, best learning channel for Ford vehicle. He's vids helped me out a lot.
Yep! $3000 and 2 new turbos later, I still had that! 😂😢. At least I got some new turbos!
Ahhh, how nice of the dealer.
Mine old dealer claimed.$3000 per side.

replaced 1 turbo on my 2014 F150 in 2019, $1300 before tax, Canada.. so far so good
Same here 😅
Would have sworn that was a slipping belt! Thanks Brian!
Dude!!!!! I’ve replaced belts several times, and was going to get into possibly the AC thinking its bearing was gone….but this is the exact sound I’ve been hearing under boosted throttle for months! I was losing my mind over a perceived belt squeal that wouldn’t go away.
Great to know. I have a 3.5 Turbo in our Flex. I will remember this noise tip if we ever get it!
Yep had to replace the driver side. I lucked out my service rep. at the dealership knew exactly what it was. Thanks
Sounds more like belt squeal but I'll take your word for it.
Thanks Brian..... Good looking out, as an amateur I'd of NEVER thought a weird (whistling noise) is the exhaust manifold......
Its normal for the turbos to whistle while accelerating but that particular whistle was def louder and not normal sounding
Thanks for the heads up I have a 5.4 but it’s nice to be able to identify it.
Exhaust surging out around the leak in the ecoboost system. Makes perfect sense.
The only reason I bought my Ford F150 two years ago with an eco-boost engine, is because I know I could look at this channel when I have a problem
lol 😆 and Fords are relatively easy to work on too
Eco booms
Mine has made the same noise for years, exhaust manifold is good, slight leak where the downpipe meets up with the turbo👍🏼
Have the 3.5 haven't had this problem but good to know
Sounds exactly like a turbo spooling up, except it should have already spooled up at that point in time!!!
Man I could have used this info 5 years ago when a shop sold me a new turbo and still didn't fix it. But thanks for getting the info out. So glad I have my 2023 Titan XD V8 now and got rid of that piece of crap 2019 F-150 I had with the 3.5. Worst engine I've ever had.
Even when it's running good it's no match for a straight 6 cummins he put up a little struggle but he was mad when defeated 😂
Pulled 7 tons with this setup over the rockies, no issues. Only weak link being the radiator size. Cummins is a legend. I enjoy the cheaper fuel🤷♂️
ALSO CHECK CAC TUBES !
No one like you big Dogg 🙌
That video you have on the oil pan replacement for the f150 is the same for the ford raptor I have a 2017 thanks
Why does it seem like every generation of the Expedition has an eventual problem with the exhaust manifold?
I see so many people putting the wrong gas in these. Not taking care of them. I love the 3.5l. Just take care of it
thats exactly what mine sounded like too.
That’s the whine of my turbo actually lol 😂
I needed this video four months ago
lol
What can we do to get this fix?
Which engines had more issues acording to you, 5.4 vs 3.5? Im thinking between 2014 expedition vs 2019 expedition i know they are complytly different inside and outside but im looking for reliability. Thanks love your channel.
This happened to me. Took it to Ford, and they said it was the turbo and wanted like 3k to replace it. I said no, bought the turbos and did it myself, and found the broken stud in the middle of swapping the turbos.....so now my truck has new stock turbos 😅
Found and fixed this same problem on a Chevy Cruze today..
Whats your ballpark time and cost to fix this issue? Might need to schedule an appointment for my 2012...
I do believe everything is designed nowadays to fail it makes the world go round
You noticed the expeditions are louder the a f-150? I got a xl version n the turbos whistle like a rocket! Kind of like it
what year is ur expedisiton the loudest ecoboost gotta be the 11-16
@@TheLawlessGang exo’s didn’t have the eco boost till 2015. Mines a 15. It might be loud cause of rubber floor mats.
I would totally ignore that thinking it’s just wind over something as I drive
What do you do about the water pump lower? Only one bolt is even close and doesn't stop the weeping! It's the same basic problem as the manifold but there's no improved component to install.
Check those rear exhaust manifold studs normally the very rear one is broken!
yup
Thanks again for the content
Na 5.0 on a 95 f150 engine makes a bad rattling sound when I try to accelerate too quickly. Worse when going up hill. What could that possibly be? Light gas no sound, foot stomp and no power gain just a lot of noise
How long can you put off with an exhaust leak? It's going out anyways..
Can you do a 5.7 hemi tick video on your other channel? Please?
What’s the fix? New manifold? New turbos? Is there a gasket needing to be replaced?
Cracked manifold or leaking flange
Just weld the manifold to the block.. Problem solved.
@@calholli lol
New manifold, new manifold studs and all the other little stuff that goes with that adds up quickly as far as cost is concerned. You will have to pay someone to extract the studs that have broken also.
So, if I were going to buy a newer Ford truck, which one(s) are most reliable?
Feel free to not answer me directly but make, or point me to one of your videos.
Thanks in advance and thanks for the content.
My whistling is back. 3rd set of manifolds. Studs don't hold. New ones replaced every time. This current set of manifolds were aftermarket supposed beefed up just for this issue. Truck is rusting out. Don't feel like changing the manifolds again. Still have scars from the previous ones. Will it hurt anything to let it go? Its not throwing any codes yet. No drivability issues either as of yet.
Inconel studs from Full Race.
I wonder how many guys swap out all the pulleys before realizing it’s the exhaust manifolds 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sounds like the whistle my 5.4 3v makes under acceleration wheb warmed up. Sure, enough broken exhaust studs. Guess I know what I'm doing this weekend.
Hi i have a sho with the 3.5L and i have a bunch of misfire and the car is moving slowly and shut off i have this code showing P068A ECM/PCM power relay De energize performance to early
What is that scan program you are using?
Ford IDS.
How does a piece of iron fail? I can see if it gets a hole or crack or the gasket is bad but isn't it just iron like older exhaust manifolds?
Sorry, the manifold gasket fails due to broken exhaust manifold studs allowing the manifold to warp.
@@FordTechMakuloco ok, that makes more sense
I'm old school and stick with tried and trusted V8. Pick the two Xtra cylinders over the two turbos and you'll be much happier and keep more money in your pocket.
Wouldn't this easily be mis-diagnosed as normal turbo spinup?
Could you potentially just keep driving like that? Any downsides to doing so?
I’ve been driving like this for a year and a half. It’s getting obnoxious now tho
Just a few weeks ago I was up in the mountains. As I was traversing up and down the mountain most of the time going down I would get this exact noise. I don't have any other exhaust noises and I don't have any other smells. So what is causing that exact noise if I don't have an exhaust manifold leak.
Waste gate?
That's a squirrel stuck in the manifold...stop lying.
how exactly does a manifold, "go bad" ? its just a chamber? Did it rust a hole? is that whats whistling?
They can develop a crack due to the constant expansion and contraction from the heatin/cooling cycles, especially when the manufacturer uses cheap metal. Another common cause in these, is the studs fastening the manifold to the block tend to lose clamping force, or they just snap.
@@RedFoxwithTubeSocks-hi7jj ahhhhhh, that makes sense. Thanks for sharing.
I like the power of the eco-boost but I like the 5.0 Coyote engine in our 2020 F-150, it still has plenty of power and don't have to worry about future turbos or turbo gasket seal failures 👍..
Just so glad not to have this sound anymore. Was fn embarrassing!
Sure miss your videos, longer ones that is.
I just posted one a few weeks ago. It is ultra busy in the shop, not much time for RUclips.
Mines been like that for 240000km hahah im bot changing it
you could have boosted the audio, man!
Wait you didn’t hear it?
😙🎶🎶Ford eco boost maybe has a whistlin diesel under the hood
well that’s not a hard fix 😆
Turbo on a small engine has ALWAYS meant failure. Like a race engine. Meant for performance in the short term over longevity. Ford chose to make a engine that fails.
I have always said that Turbos should only be on diesel engines. The turbo needs the diesel fuel to lubricate and cool the turbo. Otherwise they overheat everything and stuff like exhaust manifolds crack. Turbos can make unlimited hp but is restricted by lack of cooling.
Ecoboost turbos are oil and water cooled.
They could just build the manifolds thicker.. but that would be too easy.
@@tagle2818 It does not matter the turbos still fail due to heat. Just look how long turbo last on semi trucks 100,000 +.I had 5 turbo gas cars and rarely got 25,000 miles without heat problems.
I am driving across the county to your shop when i need important repairs done.
and this is why anything other than a v8 naturally aspirated engine in a truck/suv is a bad idea!
The best advice is don’t buy a new ford they’re junk
All mechanical devices have issues from time to time. The fact that Brian posts problems with the motor isn't at all a condemnation of the engine. Lots of good news stories too.
mine has a different noise it moans
Where does the sound come from?
From the exhaust manifold. The exhaust gasses are escaping through the gasket area causing the whistle. The manifolds warp from heat and the studs break allowing the gasses to escape.
So gas consumption rapidly increases, correct?
@@colinjarrett5079 probably. You lose power so your foots in the gas further.
I'd just tell the ladies that it's a turbo upgrade.. They would all be impressed with me
Time for headers and a catless downpipe
Makes it sound like a diesel.
Lots of 3.5l failures on the channel lately. I haven’t seen too many 2.7l failures on here though.
It’s the ones that don’t take care of them. Look how dirty that basically new expy is.
Not true. I take care of mine('13 F150, 99K miles) and mines leaking coolant at the turbos. Alot of the problems are known issues with the ecoboosts.
@@tagle2818 when did you change your coolant, and with what kind
@@michaelstevens04 I use yellow Motorcraft. The seals go out. Has nothing to do with when you changed the fluid but it's been changed since 45k.
Vacuum pump seal and valvecovers are another known issue and I just replaced those at 95k.
@@tagle2818 425k on my 2015 and it’s still on the original seals. Fluid has been changed every 20-30k miles with yellow MC and anti corrosive additive. Also had the undercarriage coated so they may have helped aswell.
Do me a favor would you let me hear it, the way it's supposed to 👍,

When will Ford admit that this engine is a failure....
It's a decent engine, when taken care of. And it's N/A brethren (3.7L) are downright great engines. I've seen a completely unopened, untouched documented '14 3.5 F150 with 320,000 miles on the clock, was in my shop only for a minor leak at the valve covers. Really not bad.
I'll defend my 3.5 it's a beast
3.5s aren't failures at all. People just don't know how to take care of vehicles and motors
3.5 is the best 6 turbo out there
It's a fantastic engine, what are you talking about. Brian is a mechanic and mechanics fix problems. All cars come with their own set of issues sooner or later. I own and lease a pile of 3.5 EBs and I think they're a good engine.
There junk to many emissiond😅
Junk
Sounds like an old school fan belt (pre serpentine).
