It is what photography is all about ... a journey ... and sometimes best shared with friends !!! Great video Richard !!! Look forward to seeing more of the Grampians.
Hi Richard, A good record of our rainy adventure with Baillie & Luke to the shores of Lake Bellfield. I've got to admit, I didn't think we would get any shots at all. I was quite surprised to see the Galaxy, even though it was raining. It was your enthusiasm that convinced me to stay out and shoot some good images. Thanks mate! 👍👌😁
Oh, I was looking forward to that. That deeper philosophy of "it is not about the photography, it is about (the company)", where you can easily replace it with "the experience". In my language we say something like "even the journey can be the destination", which is true for many of my trips, and I believe for yours too.
Yeah Richard, rum balls are back😅 you made the best out of the night and yes u r right the experience is at least half of the ting that makes it worth doing it.
Great pictures! Weather where I live is always throwing curve balls. You can can get awesome stunning pictures one minute and next thing you know clouds and crazy weather steps in!
I am so happy you love your adventures to Halls Gap, The Grampians and the beauty of Lake Bellfield. Those magical photos, the mystic of it all. In the company of friends just makes it that more special. There's so much to explore around the Grampians, with hidden treasures at every turn. Ps. I hope those pesty Kookaburras didnt digest your lunch.
I love the passion and commitment you have in all your videos you make, I enjoy watching them. It wouldn't be a Nightscape Images video without you having a cuppa in them 😂
Lovely location and video, RIchard. As much as I love the solitude of shooting by myself under the stars, whenever I have company I think “I should do this more”. Especially if they have better biscuits than I do!
Spot on Richard it's not always about what you took. It's about the company that you have with you at the time and friends are great to be with to chew the fat as they say regardless of the weather.and look at some fantastic shoots are a bonus
Very spectacular shooting session. The foreground is very photogenic and the pleasant cloud lighting by the moon is so pretty. I think the results are unique and lovely. Wouldn’t be so quick on discounting them from the portfolio 😬 Thanks again for the great vlog!
Gorgeous shots, Richard. Those dead trees made for a fantastic and atmospheric foreground. This video has really made me want to have more attempts at panoramas....which I've been avoiding for fear of complexity!!
Truer words couldn't be spoken, that experience and memories that we create can't be bought and as you say they stick with us forever. Just like the shared experience of going to Bakehouse Blitz... hehehe. Great video as always :)
Love the Grampians in the winter, such a magical place. Sounds like you all had a ball, imagine the fingers would have been feeling the cold by the end of it though ❄️
What a great video again, thanks for that! Always enjoy them. You make such a valid point when saying that sometimes it's more about the experience than the photographs themselves. Those 2 things do compliment eachother so much though. Last week I convinced a 'first timer' to come with me on a milky way weekend. We had a blast! At some point I noticed he was having a bit of trouble figuring it all out. So I stopped photographing myself to help him figure out how to get the shot he wanted. Watching him light up after half an hour, looking to his lcd, made me realise that the experience is sometimes so much more rewarding than actually getting a specific shot yourself. Thanks for all the work you put into these inspiring vlogs! Looking forward to more adventures!
Thanks so much for your great comments Jeroen. It's so beautiful out there at night we often miss the experience because our head is so much into the camera settings and technical stuff.
Fantastic images, Richard! Clouds can add an entirely different dynamic to the composition. And when they're low in the horizon like you experienced they can help diffuse some of the light pollution in the distance. I recently was shooting an old log cabin off a hiking trail - a shot I've been planning for a couple of years but didn't manage until now due to the very narrow window when the Milky Way would be visible and usually being hampered by weather. Not to mention it's 3 hrs away. This evening was an absolutely cloudless night and looked very promising so we made the hike out to the cabin, only for some high level clouds to start moving in just as the MW core was rising, but in the end I think it made for a more interesting shot. Unfortunately the Milky Way core is very low in the horizon in our area. Envious of you guys in the Southern Hemisphere. Thanks again for sharing!
@@nightscapeimages.richard By the way, how long have you had the 14-24mm f2.8S lens? I don't remember seeing it listed in your previous videos, but may have missed it. At the beginning of the year I picked up a used Z6 with only 400 shutter actuations on it to use for astrophotography and recently took advantage of Nikon's sale to pick up a 14-24mm f2.8S. I have an F-mount 14-24mm, which I love, except for the coma aberrations in the corners. The new Z-mount has none of that. The F-mount is going to be used for landscapes only now. Which do you find better? The 14-24mm or the 20mm?
@@Robert-R It's my latest addition Robert. I resisted buying it for about 18 months and actually bought a Laowa 15mm f2 instead. But the Nikon lens is far superior to the Laowa . .so now I have both. The new Z mount is heaps better than the older F mount lens . .I sold the F mount lens a while ago. I still prefer the 20mm f1.8S lens for shooting nightscapes but I'll use the 14-24 for time lapse and those times when I need a wider angle . .which doesn't happen very often for me.
Great images, Richard. I really liked the 9-shot panorama. I just tried my hand at an untracked panorama - 4 rows, and 14 rotations per row, and 10 frames per rotation, and 15 seconds per frame i think thats about 14gb of data. I didn't even catch the entire Milky Way belt - spent too much time on catching multiple frames per rotation. I have a lot of stacking and editing to do. I don't have high expectations... this was more of learning venture. I'll look forward to sharing my lessons learned on the next Zoom meeting. Hopefully I'll have final edit ready that I can share.
Catching up with mates, priceless. Some lovely images to boot despite the bad weather. Nice single shot examples which is about my limit as I don’t use Photoshop or Lightroom and don’t own a fast lens. Still waiting patiently for an opportunity here in the UK to give it a try, I know they will never get close but will be an interesting exercise and will be happy if I get a hint of the core 🤞🌌
I actually really loved this one Richard and I thought the shots were beautiful. I like it when you do single shot examples as that's more accessible for beginners in the field like me. Great video, really enjoyed it. Cheers 👍👍
Some great words of wisdom there Richard, friendships made are definitely a big component of my love of photography. Noticed you shooting with the 14-24mm f/2.8 here (recent purchase?). I used this lens, borrowed from NPS, over the last weekend and mainly used it for startrails which I'm yet to process. Curious about your opinion of this lens - maybe compared to 20mm f/1.8 prime and even the 14-30mmm f/4 which is much more affordable.
Thanks as always for watching Greg. Yes I finally succumbed to buying this lens. I did do a review of this lens about 18 months ago and determined that it was a bit too expensive. So I went and bought the Laowa 15mm f2 for my timelapses. Well the Laowa isn't very sharp and this one is very sharp. So now I'm using both of them ..!!!! ruclips.net/video/T15BRroMQC4/видео.html
Fantastic photos as always Richard. Great to see beautiful single shots and panos that in general will require less time dealing with software. Love the 9 shots pano!
Well Richard, a little different for you but closer to my preference and they came out great. You had the 14-24mm f/2.8 S listed with the images but not in your equipment list? If you still have the F mount, a comparison would be great (for me).
Thanks so much for watching Dave. I did a review and comparison of those 2 lenses ages ago. I finally succumbed and bought one .. mainly for timelapse use. See here: ruclips.net/video/T15BRroMQC4/видео.html
Loved those backlit shots and the Pano. What time and direction were you shooting? Perhaps you can add that to your image info, that would be helpful. And will McKenzie Falls be in the right direction to get any shots this trip???
Thanks a lot Greg. The milky way galactic core always rises in the same place .. about 110 degrees east. McKenzie Falls is certainly in the correct orientation .. but the walk down and back has me spooked ..!!!!
I have been self employed as a photographer/video producer for over 20 years. These days I concentrate mainly on nightscape photography. I run workshops and do other work as required to make a living.
Your love of nature, love of creation, love of adventure, love of life, make you the most remarkable Richard!
You're very kind indeed Robin. Thanks so much.
Photography is a great way to relax and enjoy. You don't need to come back with great pictures, but with great memories.
My thoughts exactly Milorad.
😯 the moody milkyway with the clouds are amazing
Yes it was a wonderful night for sure.
And we're here because of you. Nice work again .
I really appreciate you watching.

Excellent Richard and those images are beautiful. Your enthusiasm is so inspiring. Thank you.
I'm really pleased you enjoyed it Tony.
Great memories indeed! Enjoy!

Your enthusiasm is contagious
I very much appreciate your comments.
Thanks Richard, not your crisp skies you normally have, but clouds can add some lovely drama. Those trees in the lake are stunning. Thanks for sharing
Thanks a lot Jeff. Yes I do love old dead trees for sure.
Thanks Richard, yes I love getting over there too nice place for a break.
Yes it sure is Wayne. Thanks for looking.
Amazing as per...much respect to you Richard.
Very kind of you Phil

Thanks heaps for tuning in Eric.
Ow I’m thinking where did I see a lake with dead trees😁. I was amazed at seeing the Milky on such a glum night. Thank you for the inspiration!!

Thanks for your kind words Alex, really appreciate you watching.
It is a pretty spectacular area, the images are very good and all the more better when created alongside friends.
Yes you are so right Three-phase.
Gorgeous shots, Richard. Those dead trees made for a fantastic and atmospheric foreground. This video has really made me want to have more attempts at panoramas....which I've been avoiding for fear of complexity!!
Thanks again for watching Simon. Panoramas can be quite simple ... we just need to keep to the basics.
Howdy?! amigo!total ppro video!all the best-
Thank you so much for watching.
Nice shots Richard i would be right there as well taking in all the life experiences thank for showing us.
You're welcome Jeff. Thanks for watching.

It was tough but enjoyable at the same time Phill. Appreciate you looking.

Great Richard.
Thanks so much Rogerio
great adventure, I'm always waiting for clear skies but it looks like broken cloud can be pretty awesome as well . Well done Mate
Thanks a lot for watching Rick. Yes some clouds can be quite attractive. I prefer the higher level thin clouds myself.
When you said about the bakery ,I said Rum Balls you said your right ,all on que, a other great video. Thanks
Haha, you know me too well Phillip ...!!!!!

Such a beautiful single shot. As the camera is getting better and better, we would not need to do stacking anymore in the future ...

Thanks for watching my friend. I can see a lot of noise compared to stacking ... but you are right. These images are much better than previous years.
I would be very happy to have any one of those images in my portfolio and like many others I appreciate the single shots and the quality you achieved.

Great video. We have canoed accross this lake. You have inspired me to go out locally.

I love it, hard to find people that I know would want to do it .
That's a fair comment Bruce. It's hard to get out in the cold and wet to hope for a good shoot that's for sure.

Wonderful shots taken in inclement weather. I would be happy to use any of those for my portfolio!
