Thanks for your friends Liz, Lynn, Chris & Sarah!
Gonna wait for your return to Sarawak (and Sabah)!
Our main cultural celebration in Sarawak is the Gawai Dayak which is officially on 1st. & 2nd. June. Celebration is basically the whole of June and sometimes until early July. Prep starts on 31st. (sometimes as early as 30th. May). To end the celebration, there is the less significant celebration that is called "Ngiling Bidai" (rolling up the mats). During that whole time, we can conduct open houses to entertain our friends and relatives who might not be able to see on the official celebration itself.

The Chinese calendar is based on the rotation of the moon instead of the sun.
Thus the begining of each Chinese new year starts btw late January and mid February of the Gregorian calender. (Modern calender)
In ancient times the farmers uses it to know when to plant or harvest their crops as it can tell the coming and going of the seasons. In the west it's called the farmers almanac. It's still used by farmers in China today.
Besides that, it is also used for Chinese fortune telling, selecting auspicious dates for events(marriage, giving birth (many will select auspicious dates for cesarean births to ensure their child is born with good fortune), starting a business, moving into a new house etc), thus why it's still in use today.
The Chinese calendar is close to 5000 years old . For 2021, it's year 4719 according to the Chinese calendar.

  • @onghy
    @onghy 3 года назад +14

The nian gao is made from glutinous rice, sugar and water, there are few ways to eat that, common way is steam it to become softer and add some coconut flakes on it, or cut to slices and fry together with sweet potatoes.
And there is a say that during the progress of cooking nian gao, you can't speak bad words or cursing words, or the nian gao won't cook.

Steve and Ivana..I loved how both of you made all wishes and hopes while tossing the Yee Sang..so well said..🧡
Dragon and Horse...2 favourite ... haha no.wonder Ivana really special and Steve is so full of energy and galloping..
Chinese New Year celebrated for 15 days..the 15th day is also the Chinese Valentine Day..it's full moon night..
Chinese New Year is not on Feb 13th of every year..the dates differ every year..follow the 1st Day of the Chinese Lunar New Year meaning follow the Chinese calendar..can be between Jan and Feb every year..whole world same for all who celebrate Chinese New Year..
Chinese New Year's Eve is the very important Réunion Dinner for most Chinese..
Tossing Yee Sang is extremely significant not only in Malaysia..Hong Kong and Singapore too Yee Sang is very significant ,more so among Chinese and business meals or companies function and also in family gatherings..

One ingredient that will give the yee sang its special flavor is pomelo.
Homemade Nian Guo or Tee Kuih (in the hokkien dialect) is made by kneading ground wet glutinous rice with sugar till it is watery, and then steaming it in a specially made rattan basket laid with banana leaves and inside a large kwali covered by a large cylindrical stainless steel cover. It takes over 8 to 10 hours of steaming over a slow fire. But again the process of making nian guo may be simpler and faster but the result may be slightly less tasty. The best time to get a good test of tasting is right after the Tee kuih comes out of the kwali- hot and sweet. It would still be very delicious for a few days. After that it is harder inside and seldom eaten just as it is but it is usually steamed and coated with lightly salted fresh coconut flakes or deep fried with slices of yam on both sides coated with flour(like tempura).
Enjoyed your early yee sang tossing very much. Wish you a safe travel ahead.

NIah Gao or Lin Koh (Cantonese) literally translate to "year high" - if you can get fresh grated coconut flesh, add some salt, cut the lin koh in 5mm slice, layered them with the grated coconut on a plate. Steam them until soft, maybe 5minutes should do. Alternatively you could sandwich it wiht yam slice or tapioca root slice, battered and fried it. Google fried niangao or steam niangao with coconut

Nian gao got to be steamed and coated with shredded coconut sort of like 'ondeh²', or coated with sesame seeds and peanuts. It can be cut and sandwich between yam and sweet potatoes then coated with batter and deep fried. Sandwiched nian gao and banana slices between slices of golden toasts.

the Bak Kwa individually packed might be chicken meat instead of pork that both of you received few days ago...anyway Bak Kwa was individually wrapped so in case if both of you want to keep for other days esp maybe bring it along for snack at airport before arrival to Pakistan..Bak Kwa very nice to eat as sandwich..placed in between bread and maybe sliced cucumber or lettuce and add fried eggs ( but not necessary )..
Do enjoy your Bak Kwa with bread and small amount green to have a more balanced and nice on the go meal or like comfort food..
although Bak Kwa is not really healthy food but because it's not cheap either and since it's like Chinese New Year season ..just enjoy it for now..
Do not bring it to Pakistan in case it's not allowed ..but no problem to finish it while waiting for flight.
The jelly .. wow amazing ..Ivana rightly said.. zen..yes by looking at it closely I too can feel it ..
The kuih bakul, can just slice it up and if no grated coconut available , Ivana can coat the slices in eggs, placed on frying pan and fry ..like making french toast

Chinese used Lunar Year, which means there’s only 28 days per month because that’s the time it takes for a moon to circulate the earth for 1 round. That is why the date is not necessarily February 13th. And to compensate the loss of days per year, as there’s like 2-3 days lesser for a month in lunar year in comparison to a month in western calendar, there will be an extra month in every 4 years. So it’s 12 months per year and 13 months per every four year, with 28 days per month for Lunar Calendar. :)

there is Chinese calendar where I think exist for 3600 years(correct me if I'm wrong). but we don't write and state in any of international documents. however, most Chinese keep a note of their Chinese date of birth, because Chinese calendar somehow show the personality, fortune and etc; Mandarin orange, in mandarin / hokkien we called Kam, Kam = gold, so when visitor visit house in CNY, the owner treat you KAM, means give u a good fortune; why Bak kwa, because in the old Chinese day, CNY happens in spring, and Chinese eat many preservative meat, from Chinese sausages, Chinese preserve duck, chicken and etc; Pineapple, in hokkien we called Ong, Ong = Luck, so when visitor visit house in CNY, the owner treat you Ong Lai , means give u a good Luck comes. Nian Gao, in Chinese, is a wishes wishing you u grow taller and higher every year. all the above have pronunciation of good fortune, prosperities, grow taller every year and etc.

Chinese calendar is still using for traditional matters or events. We have 12 animals a full cycle. These 12 animals also representing 12 hours, 2 full cycles = 24 hrs.
Chinese Calendar is based on the moon or lunar. When comes to the traditional part, apparently northern China and Southern China (divided by yangtzi River) entire celebrations also very different. Examples northern eats dumpling (wheat to produce flour) n plays dragon dance. Southern eats reunion mainly rice (reason paddy fields availability) with dishes and plays lion dance.

Ur question as to whether there is a year attached to the chinese calendar, the answer is no. The Chinese uses a 12- animal rotation for each new year - 2021 being the year of the Ox. I think the Chinese has lost count of the number of years! (But remember that history has recorded their more than 5000 yrs of civilisation)

Chinese New Year is a celebration of Spring or Chuntien or Chun Jie in Chinese according to the Chinese Lunar calendar. So this year of the Ox falls on Feb12, the Festival is celebrated for 15 days. Usually most of Asia comes to a standstill when businesses close for the duration. This year cud possibly be affected by the pandemic. Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, PRC(China), Malaysia, Singapore, even Japan & Korea (the latter two celebrate Spring festival). Sometime back, I have learnt of a German businessman caught in a fix as businesses closed for the period. He cudn't do any business then ( he was dealing with spectacles frame). This is similar to Xmas/New Year closure.

Chinese New Year does not fall on the same day of the Julian calendar every year as it follows the lunar calendar. It normally falls between late Jan to mid Feb.

In my childhood days, my mom would cook a big pot of curry chicken, and a few other dishes for neighbours (mostly Iban) who came to our open house. they would eat and drink happily and the dishes was left for me to wash.... biiiiiigggggg pile. pls do bear in mind that i am from a kampung, and back then paper plate and plastic spoon and fork are not common.
cny was both fun and nightmare for me.. 🤣
    the fun part was :
kids : getting ang pao from my chinese relatives.. ka-ching~~~~
parents : catching up with relatives and friends.
now, i am living in the city, cny is less merry... at least for me.. 😓
but i do go back to my hometown in sarawak for cny every alternate year (1 year in Peninsular, 1 year in Sarawak), so my boy gets to enjoy cny similar to the way i did, minus the dish washing... 🤣🤣🤣

Chinese New Year in Malaysia is celebrated on different date every year, based on the Chinese calendar. Same goes for Hari Raya and Deepavali.

People actually cook the nian gao, like fry it like fritters or steam it and cover it with grated coconut. You can look up some recipes online and maybe try cooking it 😂
