I'll add this for people who haven't been there: the rocks are steeper and more treacherous than they appear on video. If you have leg/knee/stability/balance issues, I would advise you to find a different place to go, or boat fish. We also fished the John Day (WA side) and while not as hot of action, it was a bit easier to navigate for those less stable on their feet (skipping stones instead of shifting unstable boulders); also lost less gear there.
That's a great suggestion, thanks Jason. Yes, those rocks could be very troublesome, especially when they are wet. I fell once on a wet one, and took me 2 weeks to recover.
I love fishing for shad! Fierce fighting!! I’m excited for this season! I’ll be there soon! Thanks for the video and for sharing your experience! Tight lines!!! 🙌😎🎣
We were there Sunday afternoon as well. I'm pretty sure I saw you, actually. We caught a few, but I think we were fishing over the top of them, not realizing they'd moved out and deeper. Switching to a heavier weight seemed to help. After the rainstorm, they seemed to move in, and the bite really picked up. Unfortunately, we had to leave shortly after.
The dam released water after rainstorm, water raised about 2 foot, that's why shad moved closer to the bank. But the bite did not last long, about 30 minutes and then slowed down. Hope we can run into each other again over there brother.
Please comment on if using 3 way swivel setup will do better on avoiding snag than Carolina rig? It seems using slinky weight can reduce snag rate, but it's cost is higher. Did you ever try go fishing a bit further downstream , like the spots under the power line? Just curious if it's less snagging over there. Thank you.
I personally like egg sink the most. I never tried further downstream, but saw some people fishing there. As long as you can find areas where strong current joins slow current, you will be able to find shad.
They prefer to bite on smaller jigs. But smaller jigs might lose more big shad. That's the trade-off, usually I use 1/16 when there are not many of them, use 1/8 when they are everywhere.
@@BashiWAFishing one last question, barbed or barbless? The fish and game booklet says freshwater allows both unless otherwise stated. Wasn't sure where else to look. Just want to make sure from someone with experience.
I went today and I didn't catch any because I kept losing my lure and weight getting it stuck on rocks and getting tangled with others. Oops. I should have bought more lures, only had 6 with me! A long drive here and glad I got to try but I needed to be more prepared with supplies.
Most of the evening fishing is better than late morning and afternoon. Looks like the big ones are starting to come in. and they are mostly deeper. If they are still running on the 4th of July some will be even bigger. Planning to be there this year if still running. I have caught the larger one on the 4th. one year some were at 25inches long. I also count between 15 to 20 fast before starting to retrieve. With the run at that point will only be at one certain spot and depth and they stay down longer trying to real them in. have been fishing there sent 1989. hope it will be a longer run. Be safe
Thanks Mark for sharing your experience. Now most of them are fat female, I only caught a few male. Last year, I went at July 4th, but they are almost gone. The year before last year, I landed a lot of huge female at July 4th. And I believe your observation is correct, most fish I pulled from deep water were big fatty female shad.
Could you explain where exactly you are? Because I went to the dam on the Oregon side and it didn’t look anything like this. I didn’t catch anything when I went so I want to go back and redeem myself.

Thanks Bashi ! One question: although the shad fish count is 50,000 but why they're not biting now ? The bite is gone, the crowd is gone too
They are still there, but deep and far away from the bank. Use 1oz egg sink, cast far away and fishing deep.

Thanks for the video and the tips. What made you choose the orange dart?
Thanks! In general, orange is my preferred color, I also switch to other color once in a while to test the bites.

I had more bites on 1/16 jigs. Is it because I usually stay a bit far from the dam?

Mr. Bashi, is it better to go fishing here closer to the dam or just in the middle area?
Closer to dam is usually better

I was at Washington side, just below the dam
@@BashiWAFishing thank you!
Hi Bashi I am your fan and subscriber. is this on Washington or Oregon side?
It's Washington side, more fun but less fish. Oregon side will get you more fish.
When is the season over? I’m planning to go in July. Is that too late?

How much gear do you lose? Assume you are too close to the dam for boats to be fishing these so having a boat would be further down stream?
I lost about 20 during my first try 8 years ago. Now I won't lose more than 5 each trip.
