We're trying something new this week: learning a craft from a professional! Effects artist Frank Ippolito spends the day with us to teach us some basic sculpting lessons. The first lesson sounds simple, but makes us look at common shapes in a new light.

I haven't done anything like this since 8th grade art class, but the #1 tool my teacher told me to use was the rounded wooden ends of the wire loopy tools. Best advice ever.

one of the best tips any of my teachers told me was draw what you see not what you know. I took this advice for sculpting as well. Took a while to learn to actually "see" something.
I always find videos with Frank really relaxing.
As a 3d artist with no traditional sculpting experience, I have mainly focused on hard surface modeling. Recently I have started working on organic models. I may start sculpting in clay also thanks to this video, but already have noticed a slight improvement in my 3d work from just watching the way the hands/tools are working the material. The transition from polygonal work in maya to sculpting in zbrush has been, entertaining so far, but this is more helpful than I thought. Thanks for this upload.

Great job! i'm getting a membership just so i can keep watching, this is making want to sculpt again! i also loved how frank went into talking about working freelance and his experience with that, being a freelancer myself its nice to hear bits of validation from other freelancers.

Hey Frank I'm going to Art Center! Yeah the workload is intense and they expect you to work fast but its definitely worth it.
I did that when I can a kid - dug up some clay from the back yard and used it. Quite a lot of tiny pebbles, but pretty serviceable. Didn't try it in a kiln though...
Dude, all the teaching techniques Frank is using here are out of the book Drawing On The Right Side of the Brain. It makes sense.
Is the book worth reading ?
Yes, its the only how to drawing book I ever recommend. It teaches a person how to actually See. Drawing is much less about motor skills than about an elevated observation of the world. Once you figure out how to click into that headspace, you can figure out how to draw whatever you observe... you don't need a hundred books to teach you how to draw each individual thing. Just this book.
I was looking through the comments to see if anyone else noticed that. I completely agree, that book can teach anyone to draw.
It's true, the more you do something the better. I am guessing I have sculpted about 500 faces and heads, etc. over my life so far. This is just starting really. As there are people that have sculpted 10,000 pieces. Now when it comes to painting window splash signs I can say I am very good at it. I have painted over 70,000 panes of glass.

The interesting things about this are that all three fellows are not all that far apart in artistic capability. Surprising in Frank's case, who only seems to have the advantage in technique. That Norm is a little ahead is not unexpected, considering his family has at least one artist.
When you guys spoke about people trolling I have to admit I am surprised that people still do that. Maybe I just figured all the trolls would have grown up by now? However come to think of it, trolls are the reason I don't play online games. I am glad you limit how much of it you tolerate.
Michael's, A.C.Moore and Hobby Lobby are the three big box, art/craft stores around my area.
Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts is more devoted to fabrics and sewing, than art... compared to the other big three.

That turn it upside down trick also works for forging signatures ... you stop thinking of it as letters but shapes ... or at least that is what White Collar said ... would be awesome to be as artistically skilled as Neil Caffrey

Thanks for this! this is class! There is no sculpture classes where I'm from (Republic of Ireland, NOT park of the UK), except for less than a handful at craaazy prices. Any chance of a birds eye view for anything like this in the future?
I think I have a gift because I see those guys having a hard time doing it and I finished it with not tolls at all.

I studied art, in fact sculpting, in all those years I didn't have any good teacher who had showed me any good method for sculpting correctly, but sooner or later you realize that the first initial point for making an sculpture is drawing. What tested is doing is amazing but unfortunately I can't afford the lessons, remember I studied art.
P.S: I think is better the usage of modeling instead of sculpting. Sculpt=carving(taking off material) Modeling=adding material.

I don't think there is cartilage in the lobes; I believe its just tissue. Actually, in Britain, small lobes are considered a sign of royal heritage.

I thought there'd be a link of the products they used?
So, can I oil any kind of clay? or it must to use an specific one?
Instead of a normal phot, what about using 3d pictures? Just a regular cross-eye 3d picture... Could that help to grasp the shape better? That way you could photograph whatever you are going to sculpt before hand, but you can still take the pictures yourself so you see exactly what you need!

Ears and noses get bigger with age through gravity only.
There are very straight lines in nature. Crystal formations.
My question is what do you after you sculpt it with that clay stuff? Can a silicone mold be made from it right then and there or do you wait for it to dry or bake it so it gets hard then make a mold from it? Sorry I'm a complete dunce when it comes to this. Any help would be much appreciated.
+Hinji2413 Hi hi, Monster clay doesn't harden. So you make a mould of some sort, like silicone, then you can reuse the clay for ever and ever.

I cracked when Will explains his shitty ear with him panicking after seeing Norm ear and making major changes minutes before. There is some strange honesty in this statement.
Could this clay be used to create silicon moulds?
When i was a kid i use to go to this place called monster in motion and i grew up loving horror movies and loved the action figures and i use to see they had these horror models of Freddy or jason and blade from puppet master and i knew i wanted to make these figures/models. I might sign up :)

If it gets to a point where the clay gets too hard and unwieldy... Do you put it back in the microwave for a little bit more?
I'm guessing the time depends on how much clay you have, the thickness of your sculpt...
You definitely can, but I have found that working the clay with just your hands gets it at a pretty malleable consistency. Your room temperature also plays into it heavily.
Geeksmithing I see. But if it's something as delicate as those ears... You can't warm them with your hands, right?
Get really close and whisper sweet breathy words into that ear and warm it up....;)
Seriously though, it would have to be 50℉ or less to not be able to carve it easily.
allluckyseven If you put the clay in the oven or under a heating element for about ten minutes under 200F, you should be able to make it pretty malleable, and yet not melt it completely like a quick microwave session would do. There are directions on the monster clay box's lid, if you got that... check that out.

Creek Clay Answer! ... You can, but its got a bunch of crap in it and doesn't have the plasticity. You can process it, videos on youtube, that pretty much consists of drying it, sifting it, soaking it, letting all the crap rot out of it and filtering out the silt that eventually drys down into a workable clay.
The talk about work hours and clients is deeply depressing... I design between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm - it's challenging for me even after many years.

Well that's interesting, I just bought 8kg of clay a couple weeks ago. Thanks for the vid even though I won't be able to watch the rest.
Frank was working on his second ear then when they showed them off, he forgot which one he was doing, switched and started working on his original ear accidentally. You can see because of the little sausage parts he was adding as opposed to the smooth finish.
4:00 Will... Ear LOBES aren't made of cartilage
They get "larger" due to gravity and the loss of collagen in the skin.
However, you WERE correct about cartilage continuing to grow.
So, I'll give you a C-
Does anyone know where I can get the shirt Norm is wearing?
They should draw on their 3D printing experience. Slice it in their mind and build it up a layer at a time. Thick slices and smooth out the gaps. Build the key structures separately. Just my thoughts anyway.
When working with clay it's usually not a good idea to build up detail. Generally you want to add large basic shapes and then carve away rather then build up

007jua007 Yes you can, you just need to practice a lot. When I started I couldn't draw anything and only knew how to shade. After one month I was able to draw any still life and have them look good. The only thing is that a B.F.A (what I am getting) is a lot of work. Each class is a couple hours long and you will be doing a lot of pieces. You will also get tired/sore from standing or sitting on a horse for hours. Also when you first start you pieces will look like crap for like the first hour and all you need to do if keep working and listen to your instructor and then it will start to look great (After a while you will be able to make it look great in 30min because you won't need so many basic shapes).
007jua007 Internet is the place , just look around for workshop. And yes, to getting good its need dedication and commitment, its currently harder thing to keep. Everything just possible

What is needed for the basics in sculpting is what are the
different type's of clay for sculpting, and how to cure it after your
sculpture is complete. Not telling jokes and sculpting an ear.

Honestly, it didn't feel like an hour, like I was so interested in the video and glued to it that the hour felt like 20 minutes xD
When the guy said "Its been an hour" or something close to it I checked thinking maybe they cut some stuff out, but nope, 58 minutes man
I wasn't paying attention to what they were saying and I fell asleep, it was a nap of 30-40 mins and when I woke up they were STILL trying to make one ear. I thought they were good at it.
Is this air dry clay? I know zip about sculpting.
Luigi I don't think so considering they said that it doesn't dry up because it oil based. The reason water based clay drys and cracks is because the water evaporates however the oils won't do that at room or some higher temperatures.
