    Adam puts his new die filer to use in today's One Day Build of a small thwacker hammer! Starting with a beautiful piece of koa wood for handle and brass for the head, Adam works around the shop using his table saw, lathe, and mill, all producing wonderful shop sounds. But this is also a build that doesn't require heavy machinery, and could be done with hand tools. Let's watch this lovely little thwacker come together!

      Kinda ironic that in the making of a "thwacker" how many times you needed another "thwacker" to complete the job.

      Now technically it ain't a wedge if you didn't grind into one. In terms of wire on the handle, I think it would help. I have a tiny ball peen hammer from my grandfather that he repaired that way in ??? the 30's and it is still going. Though you are right that the head of the hammer is a but large for the handle so? It looks great and if it breaks you get to remake it better! I may be off because newer glues etc. but my experience is that CA glue doesn't do well with impact things. It is so hard and brittle. Again this is not a hammer that is going to have a lot of swing speed and that "wedge" has got the wood smashed against the brass so it ain't goin nowhere.

      The handle is definitely too thin. I was thinking that from the beginning and when you said it broke from just dropping it on the ground.....WTF? In fact, you should have committed to remaking an entirely new handle right there on the spot and included that in the video. This just feels like an unfinished project.

      Adam you should always start with a wooden wedge. That way if the head comes loose you can then use a steel one to tighten it back up.

      Expertise is need for advanced mistakes, with years of experience a person learns what not to do by making simple mistakes. Over time the mistakes evolve just as the creator does. The exception to this rule is self injury: it doesn't care how experienced you are, you can still hurt yourself horribly if are not mindful of safety precautions (lathe = case + point). In all my years of caregiving it's when someone's attention wanes that the really horrible things happen.

    • @mm9773
      @mm9773 4 года назад +6

      I agree. Really strange: I think everybody who’s ever even just *used* a hammer could see that coming. When he drew the shape of the handle I though “that’s really short, it’ll look fat and stubby” - then I realised how thin the handle was going to be: far too fragile for the weight of the head, no matter how strong this type of wood may be. I’m baffled, because clearly Adam is neither stupid nor inexperienced - it’s a weird mistake to make.

He seems to understand why people like certain pieces of wood more than others, and why they are correspondingly worth more money, but somehow despite being a very, very intelligent person, that's apparently where the understanding stops.

    • @crafty1098
      @crafty1098 4 года назад +1

      I've done it. For certain woods like apple, the wood is plentiful but it is hard to find readily available turning blanks. Growers often sell pieces which can be used that way, and ebay is perfect for small one-off orders like that.
      Just... please don't buy a rare expensive wood and then give it a cheap crappy stain job. If you want walnut, the blanks are like five bucks or less. Koa would have been so beautiful with just BLO or something similar. Staining it, or God help us, painting it? That's like something Vogons do when they aren't sitting on baby deer or smashing jeweled crabs.

The head was steel in the center that I turned and cupped on both sides and drilled and tapped in the middle. Then I turned two heads for it one was aluminum the other some form of delrin plastic, joined by some threaded holes and studs I made from a bolt. Works fantastic for mill setups and assembly because the aluminum and delrin don't scratch most surfaces.

    Adam, with your fancy new filing machine you could have given the handle socket a slight hourglass shape. Then taper the shank of the handle to match and slot it to half depth of the hole. After installing, driving a wooden wedge in the slot expands the top of the shank to match the hourglass socket, locking the head to the handle. A small barbed steel wedge is usually then driven 90deg across the wooden wedge to expand the shank in the longitudinal direction and lock it all together. Those barbs are commercially available hardware. I know, overkill for a little thwacker, but that's what you get for keeping me awake 'till the wee hours with these entertaining vids!!! Keep up the good work!

  • @joshwalling4633

    Adam! If you wrap the handle in a couple layers of carbon fiber by doing a wet layup, then vacuum bag it, it will have an extreme resistance to bending along the axis of the handle - AND would be “saving the project” rather than starting over. Love these one day builds - although, it’s the reason I’m starting work late today hahaha
