How does the apple TV compare with the best Android streaming box the Nvidia shield pro I'm interested in knowing if any of the video options of the apple TV are nearly as good as nvidia's AI upscaling
Thanks for your videos. Can you review the new iPad Pro 12.9 mini led screen please. I’m thinking of upgrading from the 11 inch 2018 iPad just for the screen and I would love to see what you have to say about it first. Again thanks for the hard work.
I upgraded from the Pro 12.9 2nd gen to the new M1 Pro 12.9 and I’ll tell you it’s quite the upgrade! I watch all my movies from my iPad currently so I wanted a better experience as you get with a high end TV. It sure doesn’t disappoint, the HDR is stunning, candles/fire/ the sun are blinding at half brightness in a dark room. It really gives the true HDR effect; black levels are inky, colours are vibrant, it’s the whole package. On the topic of blooming, it’s never noticeable to my eyes while watching content, only in menus when you have white text on a black background for example. It’s never been a problem and I take quality seriously, so I want to have the best experience possible. Night and day difference from the old iPad, the black bars on the top and bottom of content are actually black. Not a washed out mess like the 2nd gen Pro, M1 Pro gives you that full dynamic range, rich detailed picture quality. OLED would be a worthy upgrade for sure or if MicroLED takes off soon that will be a big step up.
I know this is an old comment, but I had the same question before buying one. To be honest I didn’t expect any noticeable difference on my calibrated 77” LG CX, but I have to say I was wrong, Apple TV, Netflix and other content look so much sharper, image has amazing contrast and it just has so much more punch. I am impressed. It is almost like once you offload streaming, network, decoding from the TV, the TV CPU has more headroom for image processing, that’s just my guess but I looks amazing.(make sure you have a correct viewing distance according to your TV size).

What version of tvOS are you running 14.5 or 14.6???? I’m honestly super curious because I have a very similar set up and have the same issue I want to enable 4.4.4 chroma while also having HDR. I always monitor my oled’s brightness to make the panel last and age as long as possible; I always run either 4K Dolby Vision or HDR and toggle between medium and maximum energy savings on my tv when I’m not critically watching content.
Dolby vision content is so dark anyway, it doesn't matter if you blast the oled TV at maximum brightness, the panel will just sip as much as required to display the scene. When you press the back button, the info text on the bottom is blindingly bright, so that's how you know the panel is not strained at all while playing Dolby vision content, no matter if it is on apple TV, native lg app, or 4k bluray.

Thank you as always for performing these test. Looks like you confirmed with the broadcast monitor what I was posting last night on AVS that didn’t seem to get any traction. Yes the DV is massively improved relative to the previous gen ATV but I could see the black dithering on my uncalibrated CX. If I invested in the Xrite pro and CalMan for home, do you think I could calibrate out that issue myself with auto cal?
When you say DV is massively improved is that in relation to what Vincent tested with the raised black levels? Or are you also noticing other improvements like brightness or colors?
@@brendantommasi just the raised black level. On the old one it was quite obvious to me on the letter-bars in a widescreen movie. On this one I almost thought it was totally fixed when I watched a movie in the evening but then when I peeked up close I could see the dithering. But keep in mind, that when the blacks are closer to true black then everything else pops more due to the increase in contrast so I would say overall the experience is better for DV content.
@@SnowBob302 I tested last night on my uncalibrated cx, and I get the results just as Vincent and others say that its "pretty" much fixed, I personally don't see it as an issue anymore. I tested a scene that had raised blacks on older 4k box, and on the new box it was perfect to my eyes, screen looked off, only after say 15 secs or so could I see minuscule raised blacks, even then the screen looked off as well. It's a massive improvement.
@@tel7625 yep, I agree. To any normal person, it’s a non-issue now. You really have to look for it. Although I did just get blackout curtains so I really wish it was absolute perfect black. Or at least to understand why there is the dither on the pure black of the image since normal HDR content doesn’t have the problem.
@@SnowBob302 Yeah, never know with Vincent and others highlighting it, it could be fully fixed one day. Im happy though and my tests were done in a fully pitch dark room and the screen did look off, overall its a fantastic improvement.
Perfect timing on both the Apple TV, which I am deciding to buy and the Zeskit cables, since the other hdmi 2.1 cables I bought were only 3ft long and too short. I also didn't like their build quality like you mentioned. I'm going to try the 5ft lite option with your promotional code. I had bought the Fire TV Cube earlier for my LG CX and it had audio syncing problems. The audio was always behind the image and out of sync. That's why I'm going with this new Apple TV 4K now.
How can you be sure that the RUclips app actually outputs proper HDR if the only way to get it is to set the ATV GUI to HDR while the RUclips app does not support content matching at all? I got my ATV 4K 2021 on Friday and am majorly disappointed by the RUclips app picture quality (with an LG CX OLED), it’s obviously not outputting real HDR. Other apps work fine with HDR.
The new Apple TV 4K has an HDMI 2.1 port, but because the FRL is not enabled does that mean that we will still see a black screen when playing content (Match Content enabled)? Does the QMS not work? That was the only reason I upgrade to this new model (waiting for shipement).
That question has not been answered. FRL is not required for QMS and neither is 40Gbit HDMI 2.1. In fact, all HDMI Ports on my Denon X6700 support QMS, even though they are otherwise "normal" HDMI 2.0 Ports. ALLM, VRR, QMS are Festures of HDMI 2.1 that can be enabled on ports that offer only 18Gbit and should even work with normal HDMI 2.0b Cables. Sadly I don't know any Devices (including the Xbox Series X) that has actually implemented QMS...
HDR brightness and colors are very good, black levels do get OLED level for a majority of the time, but there is haloing especially around white text on black background. For 2596 dimming zones over 12.9” the haloing/blooming seems quite bad to me. But I do own a LG OLED TV, plus OLED phone and watch so I am used to perfect pixel light control.
I just bought the LG C1, and coming from the old Vizio M70C3, it’s a phenomenal upgrade. I have the previous gen AppleTV 4K that only goes to 60hz, but everything I’ve viewed is outstanding. Is there any point in getting the new one? 120hz support just doesn’t seem necessary, and I already got the new remote separately.
I’ve got the G1 and have had both. I only got the new one because I was in my return period. Don’t waste your money. You can’t even enable the 120hz mode yet until a future update drops. This is more a upgrade for people who already didn’t have the Apple TV 4K.
@@chimpingape2673 do you notice any sound/audio improvements compared to the apple tv 4k 2017 model. I have lg c1 and using apple tv 2017 model and its horrible.
I have found that the bit depth displayed is in fact correct. I noticed heavy banding and a clear 8 bit signal coming from the Apple TV 4K (3rd gen) while 4:2:2 was enabled, and that 4:2:0 10 bit was much smoother
I have LG CX TV and Denon 2700 receiver, Do you recommend to connect the Apple TV to the receiver or directly to the TV and then the sound will pass to the receiver via eARC?
RUclips yes since it supports 60fps and HDR videos now, SDR videos will have no improvement. Dolby Vision movies will also look better since raised black issue is fixed.
In terms of accuracy there are several reports recommending RGB High output instead YCbCr since it exhibits some green tint. Can you confirm this Vincent?
Love your video!!. Apples mentioned the hdmi 2.1 was limited to Dolby Vision. And also precise that it will use it when streaming a video recorded from the iPhone 12. (When the camera settings are set to 4k at 60 fps and HDR video is enable). Can you test it from your side to see if it's true?
I would like to see comparison between different smart TV boxes in terms of their 4k upscaling performance. Really trying to decide between Nvidia Shield Pro and new Apple TV, but cannot seem to find any comparison between these.
Same here I only run Dolby vision on my LG cx and Apple TV 4k and it looks so freaking good. People who can’t experience Dolby vision are really missing out, the color balance is amazing. When I don’t want my tv so bright I toggle the energy savings on the tv and it’ll dim the content accordingly instead of using SDR like what was recommended in this video
@@scotttild toggling the energy savings setting dims the oled panel significantly thus extending the panel life since it isn’t as bright. The difference is you can get the panel way dimmer and still use HDR/Dolby Vision by doing it this way instead of just toggling SDR on the Apple TV
@@OccasionalBoss Honestly, I'm not the least bit worried about panel life. I just bought a Sony A80J OLED and if I can get 5 years out of it (assuming I will) I'll have got my moneys worth out of it. It'll probably last longer than that but by that time I might be feeling the itch to upgrade again.
I find with the Apple TV on my Sony X95K with the video setting “match dynamic range” turned on makes RUclips flicker twice per video transition. When I have it on and watch a video on RUclips, an ad comes on. The Apple TV flickers twice for the first ad, twice again for the second ad, and twice again to continue the original video. I do have 4K don't vision on, not sure if that makes a difference. I got the 4K to watch content in 4K quality...🤷♂️
Stupid question: I have a Panasonic VT60 (1080p) and an Apple TV (1080p). I want to upgrade my ATV to a ATV 4K (without upgrade my TV) for some stupid reason. What can I expect from this change. Will I lose picture quality?
I have one question that is a little bit off topic but that I thing that you can answer. How the TVs handle the differences on 24P content? What they do when they receive 24P videos? and 23.97 ones? I know that in general, at least american blu-rays use 23.97 fps, but a lot of content is filmed or recorded at 24 fps, the tvs can handle the two formats? Thanks in advance
Can you please try playback of local media test patterns to make sure the device is correctly decoding them? I would try several grayscale window patterns and maybe some color bars to confirm if the device is dithering all output or just the Netflix DV blacks you observed in your review. Could also compare the chroma upsampling quality to other devices.
Hi Vincent and everybodies, I not understand what is the problem with dolby vison on apple tv 4K of 2017. I have an Sony oled 65AF9 and i never saw a problem with DV. Now i would change for new model of APTV 4K 2021. Is it a good idea or not and why ? Thank you all for your help Tex
Hello ! Should we make a specific setting for the TV or Apple TV 4K? My Dolby Vision content is much darker than native TV apps in Dolby Vision. I am using an LG CX. Thanks for your feedback ! =)
honestly i just wanna know if visually this next generation will be better for my movie watching. i don't use the old one for gaming or anything else other than to stream movies and shows. if there is no real improvement then i'll probably just end up getting the remote because the previous generation remote is terrible.
@HDTVTest Hello Vincent, I have a LG C9 and 2018 Apple TV 4K. I only have issues with Dolby Vision playback. Whenever I am playing DV content on my Apple TV, I can see backlight like an LCD panel, not completely black. Is that issue fixed? Even AVForum has talked about the issue. My HDMI cable and internet connection is very good. There is no problem when playing HDR 10 or HD content. Please, suggest me, thanks.
No. If you enable it, It will force DV on all content shown on Apple TV including the menu, even If some of the content you play is in regular hdr10 or sdr. Same goes when you put video signal setting in 4k hdr
Vincent... there are many sites that lists “the best streaming devices” but all of them seem to focus on bells and whistles and how lazy they can make us. I just want the best PICTURE QUALITY 4K streaming device. One that dont introduce lets say banding every time I watch something in HDR with my projector (my Panasonic UB820 does a great job with no banding at all with UHD discs). Apple Tv gives me a lot of banding with HDR. Is there any device you can recommend that can do actual deep color or something like it?
This might be down to the higher compression on streaming services, since projectors are more sensitive to compression artifacts, or just the size makes them stick out. I remember renting Underwater on amazon prime to watch on a Sony projector, it had horrible banding and gray squares in dark scenes. Playing a sample of the 1080p bluray after that showed no such banding. Of course it might be due to hardware, since one was on a amazon 4k stick, and the bluray sample was on a vero osmc box, but it is unlikely it would make that much of a difference.
I was wondering if you could review the new high-end ZIDOO UHD3000 4K media player or ZIDOO Z1000 Pro. It claims to be the first media player that offers no loss in audio and video quality with Bluray rips. If you are able to get hold of one, I think many high-end home theatre enthusiasts would love to hear your opinions after testing it. Igshaan
I have a Samsung neo qled. [qn85d 85’’]. I find the picture quality best when I put it in 4K HDR10+ with match content and frame rate on. and chroma in 4:2:2. I find it the best on my tv cause Samsung doesn’t support Dolby vision yet, I have to put it in 4K HDR10+. I guess the settings differ from TV to TV. For ex:- UHD TVs are best when set to 4K SDR. All in all really pleased with my Apple TV 4K purchase. It’s a beast!!

I have the Apple TV 4K 2017 and LG C8 and Belkin High Speed cable bought from Apple Webshop. For Chroma I can only pick 4:2:2 as the highest option. Where in lies this limitation in my chain? ATV, TV or the cable?
Hi - Can you also do a Review / Setup of the Amzn FireTV Cube? I am not sure about certain settings. For Example it offers to match the framereate to the content? Currently I have it on OFF should I enable this? If I enable that, before I watch a Movie/Series via Netflix/Prime/Disney the TV always says "Adopting Framerate" but I have not noticed any difference? :D
Hi Vincent, I have a question. My TV is Sony Z9D and I us Apple TV 4K (2021). Why the Dolby Vision contents in Apple TV+ and Netflix seems dim. For my another TV, LG C7, there is no such problem. The contents in Dolby vision is even darker than SDR contents. Any suggestion to fix it in Z9D? Thank you.
Ha ha I see you used Zeskit hdmi cables. That’s my choice too. Thanks for this informative video on Apple Tv 4k. Just got mine last week. Seper awesome device.
How does this thing handle as being a Plex player? Does it have audio pass through or will it have to transcode 4K dts/atmos audio like my Xbox one x does and can’t handle any 4K content.
Good content. Any plans in the near future to do teardown to check for Hdmi 2.1 soc? Apple support told me since hdmi 2.1 cable works, the 120hz capabilities will probably be allowed sometime after iPhone is 1st optimized sometime in the fall.
Chroma always throws me off. I set my ATV4K to 4:4:4 but I’m confused what to set my Sony x800 blu ray player to between 4:2:2 or 4:4:4? I have high speed 4k certified hdmi cables if that makes a difference
Hey have you checked the actual picture quality of the content you on the new Apple TV, because apparently there’s an issue where all the 4K content is showing up as HD instead. Prime example if you download the movies anywhere app it says “this device doesn’t support 4K playback” I checked all of my streaming apps and same thing there all HD instead of 4K
I noticed that too. I was watching a movie that I purchased through the movies app, the film is in 4K but for some reason when I played it it plays back in HD. It plays in 4K on my older Apple TV 4K

Hi! Can you review the New mini LED iPad Pro?
The link for the cable you have is for US only? Tried amazon UK but it has a very differrent looks and probably fake?
My HDMI Output setting is set to RGB High instead of YCbCr. Which one is better? I have good cable and good TV.
YCbCr.
Definitely, YCbCr. RGB tends to look darker
According to some sources RGB High should be more accurate, but this is still a bit of an open question.
There is still black screen upon switching on our 2021 Apple TV 4K box.
Can you please compare image quality with nvidia shield Pro 2019 and also give your opinion about their AI upscale
I’d love to se you review the HDR on the new Mini LED iPad Pro 12.9
Yes!
If you’ve seen an x900e it’s the same. Shadow corners and bloom city
Would a 4K splitter be high enough for changing to 4:4:4 on Apple TV 4K
Unfortunately the HDMI Zeskit is not sold in my country. Do you recommend another brand?
Why would you want anything more than 60hz for an Apple TV?
@@chimpingape2673 do you notice any sound/audio improvements compared to the apple tv 4k 2017 model. I have lg c1 and using apple tv 2017 model and its horrible.
How does the Netflix and Amazon picture compare to the Firestick?
I have found that the bit depth displayed is in fact correct. I noticed heavy banding and a clear 8 bit signal coming from the Apple TV 4K (3rd gen) while 4:2:2 was enabled, and that 4:2:0 10 bit was much smoother
Should i have real cinema on with match framerate? Lg c9 owner
@HDTVTest, what are your thoughts on using this with the Sony A80J instead of Google TV and the native apps?
I have LG CX TV and Denon 2700 receiver, Do you recommend to connect the Apple TV to the receiver or directly to the TV and then the sound will pass to the receiver via eARC?
Ist the Problem with Resolution Output fixed?
Will there be noticeable difference in daily life content such as RUclips/prime/Netflix etc
RUclips yes since it supports 60fps and HDR videos now, SDR videos will have no improvement. Dolby Vision movies will also look better since raised black issue is fixed.
This is a man that has all but given up hope.
Can you explain to me more? I also see that this man is very smart
In terms of accuracy there are several reports recommending RGB High output instead YCbCr since it exhibits some green tint. Can you confirm this Vincent?
Just read here www.avsforum.com/threads/the-cheap-test-pattern-generators-accuracy-thread.3023002/post-60759163
I am not sure whether those RGB vs. YCbCr recommendations are actually meant for viewing Content or just for using the ATV as a calibration Device.
@@rolandrohde rgb high for real content, rgb low for calibration

Thanks. But from what I understood that doesn't work for HDR/Dolby Vision then, right?

@HDTVTest Should i leave the Dolby Vision apple tv profile? does this affect burn in and lifespan of the tv?
Max Verstappen! I can't be the only person to notice this after the Monaco Grand Prix
Compared to firestick this does better upscaling
So the old Apple TV 4K still has raised Dolby vision blacks?
3:27, that comment killed me, “For those that doesn’t need compensating for other things in life…” hilarious!
3:25 I can't stop laughing
Wait until you get to 5:10 🤣
More important than the Apple box, where did you get your fabulous glasses from ?
Would you mind doing the same with the new Chromecast?
My experience has been putting the interface in 4k Dolby or HDR is better as even SDR content is upconverted and to my eye looks better than SDR.
Me too! I dont understand why! Samsung Qled user over here! So in 4K HDR 60Hz do you leave Match Dynamic Range ON and Frame Rate ON?
@@OccasionalBoss Me too! I dont understand why! Samsung Qled user over here! So in 4K HDR 60Hz do you leave Match Dynamic Range ON and Frame Rate ON?
I find with the Apple TV on my Sony X95K with the video setting “match dynamic range” turned on makes RUclips flicker twice per video transition.
When I have it on and watch a video on RUclips, an ad comes on. The Apple TV flickers twice for the first ad, twice again for the second ad, and twice again to continue the original video.
I do have 4K don't vision on, not sure if that makes a difference. I got the 4K to watch content in 4K quality...🤷♂️
When are all our devices going to be wireless? Why do I need to plug my Apple TV box into my tv in 2021?
Stupid question: I have a Panasonic VT60 (1080p) and an Apple TV (1080p). I want to upgrade my ATV to a ATV 4K (without upgrade my TV) for some stupid reason. What can I expect from this change. Will I lose picture quality?
What’s the difference between using the 4K Apple TV vs The apps on the LG CX. The CX does 30,60,120 FPS right?
I have one question that is a little bit off topic but that I thing that you can answer. How the TVs handle the differences on 24P content? What they do when they receive 24P videos? and 23.97 ones? I know that in general, at least american blu-rays use 23.97 fps, but a lot of content is filmed or recorded at 24 fps, the tvs can handle the two formats? Thanks in advance
simply ... awesome reviews ... keep it going !!
Is the gray Apple TV looking pinkish?
Been waiting for Vince’s review since news first dropped about the new AppleTV 👍🏻

Raised blacks aren't fixed in the older model?
Hello ! Should we make a specific setting for the TV or Apple TV 4K? My Dolby Vision content is much darker than native TV apps in Dolby Vision. I am using an LG CX. Thanks for your feedback ! =)
I am just curious. Do you have the darker scenes only with Apple TV or do you 4k Blu-ray player also give darker picture when using Dolby vision?
@@haukionkannel I don't have a Bluray player. I am 100% streaming. ^^'
honestly i just wanna know if visually this next generation will be better for my movie watching. i don't use the old one for gaming or anything else other than to stream movies and shows. if there is no real improvement then i'll probably just end up getting the remote because the previous generation remote is terrible.
Yeah, same problem here. @hdtvtest can you please suggest?
No such thing as a backlight on an OLED TV.
It's called raised blacks.
So enabling Dolby Vision for the Apple TV is specifically for the user interface?
Of course it might be due to hardware, since one was on a amazon 4k stick, and the bluray sample was on a vero osmc box, but it is unlikely it would make that much of a difference.
youtube will support 5.1 on apple tv ?
This guys dry humor is subtle and hilarious
I was wondering if you could review the new high-end ZIDOO UHD3000 4K media player or ZIDOO Z1000 Pro. I have a Samsung neo qled. [qn85d 85’’]. I find the picture quality best when I put it in 4K HDR10+ with match content and frame rate on. and chroma in 4:2:2.
