It’s ironic that Lorkhan/Shor isn’t on this list. He loved his mortals so much he got his heart torn out by his fellow gods. He even lives among them in Sovengard and while in mortal form on Tamriel.
@@cobaltprime9467 actually as much as I love Shor, he didn't get murdered by the Aedra because he wanted to protect humankind, he actually led a lot of wars against the Elves himself. He died because of the creation itself, the Aedra weren't happy that they were tricked. They weren't happy that Lorkhan the god of limitations created a world full of limitations and imperfection. They would've killed him whether he sided with men or not. He actually did create a heaven for men tho, whether to save their souls as he was worried the Aedra were so salty they would destroy their soulss or he just wanted to reward his followers. He's the nicest god there is.
As a person with a religious background, your explanation of Mara, that she loves unconditionally, makes me like her more, to the point that she might as well be my third favorite deity of this franchise. The others being Talos and Stendarr. Might, Justice, and Love.
@@sommerblume9671 It's possible to love that a person is a living, utterly unique individual and care about their existence, while still meting out punishment. Mothers after all, will still punish their children should they misbehave.
I see the symbolism of Mara and marriage on its relation with love to be that of dutiful love while Diabella is love that is unbound and uncontrolled. It parallels how marriage was not associated with love originally for most cultures but rather was a political and social contract. You vowed to support each other and if love blossomed that is great. It is why in the nord culture kyne could be married to shor but mara be his concubine. So long as Shor did his duty to Kyne and respected her properly he was free to have lovers outside of the marriage.
I think Lady Mara is more about male Sacrifice (not Compassion) and Civil Partnership (not Marriage) as her Temple is located in the crime partnership area of Skyrim - namely Riften.
wrong... u dont understand polyamory if u view it as "uncontrolled" i assure im a devote follower of Dibella not just in game butt IN REAL LIFE... poly people constantly have to deal with the grotesquely and false information most monogamous people "understand" as poly.. dibella clearly VALUES love and in a RESPECTFUL NOT MANIPULATIVE WAY... friends with benefits.. even PERMANTE friends with benefits is way more what dibella is about then "unbound and uncontrolled" the is a RESPONSIBLITY to it.. in fact.. it requires MORE.. u need really high EQ(emotional intelligence) to be poly.. cause ur dealing with often many people... im a women.. married to another women.. and we both have the same bf for 10 years now... we have a house together.. and we have nieces living with us.. so 3 adult people functioning like a family.. yet all 3 of us have FWB and we are free to have casual sex with other people.. but in a RESPONSIBLE MANNER... literally just like with MARA butt more then 2 people... also mara as far as i know has zero issue against a poly marriage.. mara for all tense and purpose is LOVE and COMMIT to ur partner.. LOVE = LOVE ... SEX = SEX... LOVE =/= SEX... thus why mara and dibella work well together... azura further improves it.. cause it reminds u.. be u monogamous or poly.. to not forget to LOVE urself the way mara and dibella want you to love others.. ur issue... ur claim about dibella.. NOTHING in her nature or lore.. is done outside of love.. there is NO MARRIAGE based on securing resources etc for urself... azura + mara + dibella = closest thing to actual human nature.. specifically nomadic hunter gatherers.. before the last 10000 years when religion started to become organized and FK'd UP HUMANITY... as humans are PROVEN not to be monogamous.. butt monotheism via hell fire out right demonized and brainwashed people to be against their inherently not bad nature.. CONTROL SEX u control HUMANS.. dibella is NOT about control.. nor is mara.. nor is azura..
Kyne fits more into the trio than azura....love of the world and nature in general....maiden mother crone trilogy with dibella and mara....kyne being crone
No because love in this context is more about sexual/interpersonal love. Azura is much more diabolical but still centered around an aspect of love, love isnt all sunshine and rainbows
@@theFORZA66 Azura has nothing to do with Love, she is more vain in her nature she is about the vain nature about demanded adoration and she represents the opposite of Mara where Mara represents a motherly love and commitment Azura is the harsh punishment for violating that commitment, hence why she cursed the chimer to the dunmer.
@@nocturnal101ravenous6 Except it wasn't a curse because a) they were made in her image b) they never resented her for it c) it was a warning to the tribunal that the dunmer will rise again through her guidance.
@@sommerblume9671 semantics, in the lore books they use the word "curse" and I thinks by other races they mention it as a curse, Either way it was a punishment for drawing power from the heart using kagranaks tools, which they broke their oath to her and killed the Nerv. Let me add the Tribunal slapped her in the face by claiming themselves living gods. Also read up on the box and the flower petals if you want an idea as to her vain nature. Also I think you are quoting that 1 book, the reality may differ.
I think it's also worth mentioning Mephala, if only to dispel any misconceptions about her affiliation with sexuality. Mephala's idea of sex has nothing to do with love (the theme of the video) or even physical attraction. Hell, as far as Mephala is concerned, sex isn't even about pleasure. Mephala is all about lies, deceit, and manipulation and she uses sex to aid in those. Think about it like this: ▪Dibella is having (consensual) sex with your boyfriend/girlfriend/other because you love them. ▪Mephala is having sex (of ambiguous consent) with someone so you can take one of their kidneys.
And to finish the trio of sex with its darkest third: - Molag Bal is having NON consensual sex (Rape) for the sake of asserting dominance or just having that selfish, sadistic glee in hurting others
I thought that, until I realized that though she might be the goddess of sex, but she is not the goddess of love. Sex for her is a means to manipulate, to control, not as a means to express love.
When it comes to Tamriel's Gods, I definitely consider myself a follower of the glorious Azura, the Moon and the Sun, the Shadow and the Light, you get me 🌙 ☀️
@@despacitodaniel801 well, there's quite a few Gods that are quite nice to follow. I mean I mainly consider myself a daedric guy more than an aedric one. I guess that worshiping Daedras is more rewarding as they seem to care more about their followers. Especially Azura, that's why adore her so much. The good thing is doe that there's no "right deity to follow" or the only good one. I mean particular deities are made to follow by particular people. The one for me is the Azura, but the one for you is the Sanguine and so on and so on.
od skrajności w skrajność I would definitely disagree that they ‘care more about their followers’. I’d say it’s the opposite! They just have more power and can reward people much easier, but most of the Daedra are bad for mortals and the ones like Azura are still contingent on you being in their favor. The Aedra, on the other hand, are much more forgiving and caring but do not have the ability to reward it.
I like this aesthetic you guys have taken from the podcast art design. Like the retro/nostalgic looking color scheme and 90s looking typeface. It's nice.
This was super insightful! I am currently trying to create a Dunmer character who reveres the Reclamations and this gives me a better understanding about what it is that Azura actually like does and is about to her followers and I never thought to compare her to Dibella and Mara 🧐
Azura is not a love god. She's genuinely the Karen of Daedric Princes. Mephala is a manipulative assassin and she's still closer to being a love god than her because, even if it's wielded as a weapon in her sphere, at least lovemaking is something she covers. Azura just like to exert the bare minimum effort necessary to lay claim to a people as "hers" and then pitch a bitch-fit when they inevitably outgrow her non-existent influence.
Agreed. Kyne fits more of the trio, with a love of nature and the world. Plus theres the whole maiden mother crone trilogy with mara and dibella. Kyne being crone
@@Lshaw89 I could definitely get behind that, particularly with the prevalence of priests and priestesses of Kynareth often practicing the healing arts. Love isn't always romantic, and offering love and care for your fellow man still fits the bill. Whoever the third would be, though, it certainly isn't Azura. The only reason that stuck-up tart is as popular as she is is because the narrative of Morrowind shoved her down our throats, so a massive amount of the fanbase like her for no other reason than that they were told to do so. When standing in her own merits there's very little she brings the to the table. She's just a better-disguised Namira: toxic through and through.
"Love god" is such a weird term, how is it defined? Out of the trio mentioned the only one with "love" as part of their sphere of influence is Mara. Dibella can only he considered a goddess of love because sex, even though her thing is beauty first and foremost. Azura is loving in a possessive sense, she's described as loving by her followers, even though her sphere is literally vanity.
@@slimretro2659 she definitely doesn't love her followers. She loves that they're HER followers, but she only loves the adoration and attention she's receiving as opposed to the worshipers themselves.
The cinematography of this vid is next level, ya'll have definitely stepped it up and I for one, appreciate it. Love your vids guys, glad ya'll are STILL doing ES/Skyrim videos after all this time, and the podcast is AWESOME!
You know, I’ve picked up that jar of honey in Haelga’s bedroom a dozen times, but I never stopped to think why it was there or what she does with it...
Sighs, wakes before dawn (as the early zealot catches Azura napping), leaves home and climbs on soap box. cannot fetch variable named FNISaa_shout of type int, returning 0 No! Damn Talmor Toddy. Now I need the hugs only Nazeem's disappointing vegetables give me.
Self indulgence isn't the same thing as self love because short-term self indulgence is often extremely harmful in the medium to long term. So, for a totally arbitrary example, if you get totally wasted drinking in a tavern with Sanguine, as fun as that might be short term, you could wake up the next day with a horrible hangover having stolen a goat, wrecked a temple, and married a hag raven, all of which are disastrous consequences that it could take you a very long time or a large amount of peril to undo the damage of.
Goddesses reactions to your sadness. Diabela: but sad is not beauty. Azura: if you are sad i'll be sad, i'm too perfect to be sad. Mara: do you want a hug?
Nocturnal: You'll feel better if you brood about it for a while in the dark. Meridia: Blind whoever made you sad with your righteous fury! Boethiah: You should stab whoever made you sad. Mephala: Specifically, stab them in the back when they think you're happy. Namira: I have some ideas about what you can do with the corpse! Kynareth: Sadness is natural, but I'll teach you to shout about it.
Polygamy may have been popular among the old Atmorans as life will have been very hard and short in that country, more wives means more children. I think the priest in Riften says something along those lines about current Skyrim although i imagine its more Nord tradition now than fact.
Azura always reminded me of Greed from FMA, a being who at it's core has a selfish motive, but when engaged in the right way manifests in positive ways It should be noted that Mara is the _concubine_ , not _mistress_ , of shor as the term concubine hold distinctly different, and more offical, connotations even in some cases, such of royalty, being used for the sole S.O. So with said connotations in mind, not only does it suggest an acceptance of polyamory, much like the akudan version, but as both concubine and handmaiden are generally a subservient roles, hence the aforementioned cases where the term may be used for the sole S.O., it also speaks to Mara's subservience to shor and Kine
I think I'll follow these new religion of the Triad of Love Goddesses, my three favorite deities from Tamriel, each one deserves reverence. I mean the Church of the Eight Divines will acuse me of blasphemy and the vigilants of Stendarr will judge me... BUT I believe in love as the leading force of faith so... Yeah. Also: Dibella - Maiden Mara - Mother Azura - Crone
My working theory is that Azura's involvement in Mundus and her need for adoration by mortals is a result of her own regrets at not participating in creation. In that way, she's the counterpart of Meridia, who fled creation instead of desiring to be part of it.
There's also the fact that the higher beings, whether it be aedric or daedric, being powered by the faith of their devoted followers. They can't exactly exist or do their magic without someone confirming their existence. Not sure whether that's the appropriate way of saying it but that's what I get from binge-watching the Elder Scrolls lore playlist.
@@Vanvidum that's actually true. The three good daedra were very, VERY interested in Lorkhan after creation because they found out that he actually resembles a lot of their beliefs and spheres, and they actually took revenge from Trinimac for killing Lorkhan. The Khajiti myth speak of Azura plugging Magnus's eye and Boethiah the other eye. In Khajiti myth Azura is considered the sister of Lorkhan who cried a whole realm when her brother died. And don't forget that she was pretty upset when the Tribunal used the heart of Lorkhan.
Super interesting take and lovely video, and on a Friday, the day of Venus Lol! DIbella gives me Venus and Black Moon Lilith vibes, Mara definitely the Moon, and Azura initially I saw as wise Pallas Athena, but now maybe some Lilith as well... any videos on Kynareth? I'm fairly new to your channel 🙁.
Wait, all the hatred between humans and elves happened because Shor couldn't keep his divine pants up? The Aedra agree to create the mortal plane, Shor is their leader, Shor messes with Auriel's wife, Auriel feels betrayed and convinces the other Aedra that losing their powers was a bad idea, they rip out his heart and the conflict between humans and elves begins
Well, TBH Hiricine also respects his followers Each daedra is capable of good, as hard as that is to believe, and objectively is looked at with a darker more evil intent, in the end, they give people what they want, what people choose to do with it is their choice, and lets be honest even in world mythologies, there is no god that doesn't demand the vanity of worship or some service in trade for bestowing their strengths.

Who's better, a warrior poet with some of the best lore in the game / personal protector of Morrowind and its people. OR a control freak (that lets the events after the tribunal falls happen) will backstab you if you dont love her. The internet: option 2 Me: ¿?¿?¿?¿?¿?¿?¿?¿?¿?¿?¿?¿?¿?¿?¿?
A little theory, what if Azura, Dibella and Mara were "sister's" I don't exactly know how that works with daedric beings, but what if those whose spheres of influence have similar spheres as others, are more closely related than they are to the others, such as in this case with the Trio of Love, perhaps Julianos, Hermeus Mora, Mephala, Jyggalag and Vaermina as different sides of logic are more closely related. It wouldn't be farfetched considering that we know Meridia as a daughter of Magnus, and if we consider her role in the creation of Mehrunes Dagon, we could also call her mother of Dagon.
Not related to love gods but, does mephala have any shrines or just the backdoor and the temple in solstheim? I ask because she is the only tribunal daedra who's statue looks like a mud made snowman, being under construction
I am interested in the "Handmaiden of Kyne, Concubine of Shor" dynamic. This illustrates a different view of marriage given what we know of Shor and Kyne. Even in our own world, in ancient times people did not marry for love. Marriage was a social contract, an economic transaction to gain resources or solidify alliances. Not only was love not required for marriage, in many cases it was a complication. Love was instead reserved for flings, affairs, and yes, concubines. In many cases extramarital affairs were to be expected. So Shor's marriage to Kyne was one of duty and "staying together for the kids" whereas Shor and Mara could very well have been based on affectionate love.
I've been literally toying a head canon consisting of a race of elves that worship these three as a response to the Reclamations of the Dunmer. I can't believe you guys actually uploaded this. Well I kinda got bored of Mara and placed Kyne in the trinity, but still. Seeing this in my recommendations made my day.
@@adarshkamoda9183 English is not my first language so forgive my mistakes and whatnot. I should rather do a reddit post and direct you there but I'm not sure I want to do that. It’s gonna be a painfully long post, so, sorry in advance: In short, I was playing around with the idea of a subset of Falmer that refused the Dwemer Bargain and survived the genocide imparted by the Atmorans, hinted as a possibility by [DG SPOILERS (at this point?)] Knight-Paladin Gelebor at the end of the Dawnguard main quest line. This is due to my fascination with Snow Elves, for they have not been very developed lore-wise in comparison to other races. I also love Elder Scrolls Theology and the exercise in mythopoeia it’s lore encourages.
The main idea is that during the time the Atmorans were exterminating the snow elves, this subset of Falmer were devout followers of Auriel in hiding. Cut off from the possibility of seeking refuge in the Chantry of Auriel and contemplating what could very well be the extinction of their race, they started losing faith in Auriel, their original sovereign, for their prayers of desperation were unanswered. On 21 of First Seed (her summoning day) Azura, the Lady of the Night Sky and Maiden of Twilight presented herself to the spiritual leader of this subset. In her vanity, she saw an opportunity to acquire undying loyalty, devotion and adoration. She answered the prayers of the forlorn Snow Elves. She taught them illusion magics that could hide all of them in plain sight, alteration magics so they could easily change size and shape, making their elven frames and traits unrecognizable and helping them easily blend in with nordic society. Azura delivered this act of mercy under one condition: they had to renounce the absent father Auriel and adopt her worship instead, as a present and caring mother. And they did. In renouncing Auriel, this set of elves renounced all his symbols as well. They would forsake gold and trade and dress only in silver or gems, they would shun the sun and wait with baited breath for Evening. They would turn their milky white hair for raven black. And finally, gave up the notion of escaping the mortal realm as Auriel encouraged and adopted the goal of making creation better than Aetherius could ever be, so that one day, Auriel would desire to come back, only to be rejected as they once were by him. Whats more, as symbol of this covenant, every male Snow Elf of this group was changed into female form, for female is the preferred shape of Azura, and her daughters must answer in her likeness. Forevermore all fruit of their wombs would be female also and they would refer to themselves as Celemer (Silver-elves on Aldmeris), Daughters of Twilight, Sisters of the Night Sky and Progeny of starlight. On that day Azura was proclaimed their only Goddess. This would make their culture obsessed with beauty, and would use all sort of alteration and illusion magics to acquire such beauty. They would study beauty in all its forms, like the obvious, the aesthetic, the harmonious , but also beauty in pain, in suffering, in battle, in loss, in grief and in joy. Understanding of beauty is their worship, for is not Azura the most beautiful of all?. It was only natural that their obsession with beauty would make them worship Dibella. This enraged Azura and the high matron of the silver daughters had to make amends. For this reason, their interpretation of Dibella would be of a great spirit, a Goddess of great power that also worshipped Azura, after all, Azura was her mother also. This would please Azura greatly, for what could be better worship than to be worshipped by a God. A God who could not answer to prayers or manifest itself, like she could for her Daughters. In time, the Celemeri pantheon would expand to encompass other great spirits as interpretations of other known deities. But as the society was matriarcal and conformed of women in it’s entirety, male deities would conflict strongly to their way of life, and so, after many iterations, only Azunna, Kynefra and Dibahna remained. Kynefra, fist daughter of Azunna, Warrior Goddess of Silver Storms, Mother of Nature and progenitor of beauty in flora, fauna and the elements such as rain, snow, fire, ice and wind. She encourages the sisterhood to be stoic to strangers, to be brave in all endaevors, fierce in battle, and to fight with valor in order to preserve creation, for she died giving birth to this world. A sister of twilight must protect Mundus for it’s through making this world better that they better themselves, it’s through continuing the work of greater spirits that they become great themselves. Dibahna, young sister of Kynefra, Nymph Goddess of Silver Verses. Mother of Dance and Song, paragon of art, progenitor of both carnal and spiritual beauty. It is she who teaches the silver sisters to use Alteration Magics to be beautiful on the outside. She exhorts her followers to see beauty in the complex relationships between living beings. When they act in straightforward fashion and when they resort to elusiveness, when truthful and when deceitful. It is through her teachings that one can appreciate a beautifully crafted lie, as well as a sincere, vulnerable and heartfelt truth. Lies can embellish, make something more out of an unimpressive actuality, but too much lies and the sense of wonder vanishes in the blink of an eye. She entreats her followers to find the balance in subterfuge and honesty, for reality without lies is fact without potential, and lies without truth is a fleeting shapeless illusion with no possibility of concretion. And finally Azunna, Beckoner of the Forlorn, chief deity among the Silver Daughters of the Night Sky, Goddess of Mercy and Power. Progenitor of beauty in starlight and magic. She encourages her followers to understand the mysteries of the world inhabited. To venerate the stars, their power, and their role in creation. It is by understanding the raw materials and fabric of reality that they can continue the work of those great spirits that set the foundation of nirn. She teaches to demand undying love to undying love once given. To both demand everything and give everything back. And to not waste love or prayers in those who would not answer to those gifts accordingly. Her most important lesson is that true beauty is only achieved in a dance between stasis and change, for one cannot truly be without the other. It is said that those sisters who forsake her love transform into the most hideous creatures, a feral version of their former brethren. So that’s it. If you’re still here, wow! Thank you for your time!. I kinda wanted to picture a religion in which the head of the pantheon was one single Daedra (because they are present and powerful) while keeping the rest of the pantheon Aedric. Azura just seemed like the perfect choice. I also wanted to incorporate religious elements that invited a race to protect Nirn, not escape it or transcend it. Sort of, achieving enlightenment by the beautification of Nirn, make the dream so much more appealing than the reality of the dreamer, sort of. I also wanted each deity to have a strong connection to the celestials. Azura (Mage), Kyne (Warrior), Dibella (Thief). After all the idea started to flesh out itself as a group of mer that venerate the stars, the elements and creation itself. In regards to the race, given the backstory it makes sense to me that they hold illusion and alteration magics that the rest of Tamriel don’t. I pictured them as having two forms, their “public face” so they can blend in and interbreed with the locals of Skyrim and their true form, perfected trough magics in reverence to their Gods. Also, I liked the idea that Azura fucked them up by making them only women, so this would be forced to blend in to procreate, then probably would retreat with their child back to their society, dunno. This also opened the possibility on them playing an important role in Skyrim today behind the curtains. I head cannon their magic as in tune with the stars, nature and the elements, thinking they are responsable for the standing stones of Skyrim and such. I also picture them as using ancient seals and runes offensively, maybe conjuring elemental atronachs and favoring ice as they were once Snow Elves.
@@EuphoricRaccoon That... is bloody BRRRRRILLLLIAAANT!! Your English is flawless as far as communication and literature goes but then again, English isn't my first language either! The race and religion you have created is quite unique amongst the other Tamrielic races. The only question now would be where they hide themselves most of the time. It would make sense that they can occupy a small, unnoticeable place underground where they can avoid sunlight but use Alteration magic to make it bigger on the inside (spatial manipulation, if you will). They could further use Alteration magic to make their cities' atmospheres a place of perpetual twilight. What you've created is very interesting. Well done.

I think Lady Mara is more about male Sacrifice (not Compassion) and Civil Partnership (not Marriage) as her Temple is located in the crime partnership area of Skyrim - namely Riften.
wrong... u dont understand polyamory if u view it as "uncontrolled"
i assure im a devote follower of Dibella not just in game butt IN REAL LIFE...
poly people constantly have to deal with the grotesquely and false information most monogamous people "understand" as poly..
dibella clearly VALUES love and in a RESPECTFUL NOT MANIPULATIVE WAY...
friends with benefits.. even PERMANTE friends with benefits is way more what dibella is about then "unbound and uncontrolled"
the is a RESPONSIBLITY to it.. in fact.. it requires MORE.. u need really high EQ(emotional intelligence) to be poly.. cause ur dealing with often many people...
im a women.. married to another women.. and we both have the same bf for 10 years now... we have a house together.. and we have nieces living with us.. so 3 adult people functioning like a family.. yet all 3 of us have FWB and we are free to have casual sex with other people.. but in a RESPONSIBLE MANNER...
literally just like with MARA butt more then 2 people...
also mara as far as i know has zero issue against a poly marriage..
mara for all tense and purpose is LOVE and COMMIT to ur partner..

No because love in this context is more about sexual/interpersonal love. Azura is much more diabolical but still centered around an aspect of love, love isnt all sunshine and rainbows
Kyne aka Kynareth is Nature and the circle of such. She and Hiricine share much in common but are opposites in a certain way.

Think about it like this:
▪Dibella is having (consensual) sex with your boyfriend/girlfriend/other because you love them.
▪Mephala is having sex (of ambiguous consent) with someone so you can take one of their kidneys.
And to finish the trio of sex with its darkest third:
- Molag Bal is having NON consensual sex (Rape) for the sake of asserting dominance or just having that selfish, sadistic glee in hurting others

Damn, where’d you guys get the background mix of the original Elder Scrolls soundtrack?
I feel like Sanguine should have been included in that “Self Love” thing.
Sanguine is basically dibella, but more selfish.

It should be noted that Mara is the _concubine_ , not _mistress_ , of shor as the term concubine hold distinctly different, and more offical, connotations even in some cases, such of royalty, being used for the sole S.O.
Yeah. Also:
Dibella - Maiden
Mara - Mother
Azura - Crone
From this video, it sounds like Azura has a sort of inferiority complex. Also, I conclude from this video... Love is complicated.
Azura is objectively a horrible egotistical god, but worshipping her pays off.

I'm a Dibella worshipper %100. I have all of her statues in the game in my player house

English is not my first language so forgive my mistakes and whatnot. I should rather do a reddit post and direct you there but I'm not sure I want to do that. It’s gonna be a painfully long post, so, sorry in advance:
In short, I was playing around with the idea of a subset of Falmer that refused the Dwemer Bargain and survived the genocide imparted by the Atmorans, hinted as a possibility by [DG SPOILERS (at this point?)] Knight-Paladin Gelebor at the end of the Dawnguard main quest line.
Well done.

This is a pretty good take, I never thought of Azura's influence like that. Very insightful!
You didn't say much of anything about Azura. Do better, mortal.
