I have seen both in person and I really prefer the G3 83". It's plenty bright, especially since I have a dark room. And I need 83" minimum, so there's really no option. You guys thinking the C3 is close to the G3, the picture quality and options are totally improved on the G3, and the G3 has a 5 year panel warranty that includes burn-in, the C3 does not. Something to consider.

For instance the night cityscapes at around 3:40 and 10:20 for me look much better on the 83” non-MLA TV. But I do understand what you are saying about the G3 MLA not looking washed out in person.

I just went from a 77” C8 to an 83” G3. I notice the size difference right away. The other thing I notice is that the G3 has better gray and near-black lighting. The G3 definitely looks better, and I wasn’t sure how that would be possible as I liked my C8 so much. But alas, the G3 was a nice step up. Brian, thank you for your review and comments between the two sets. I am sure in person there is a different perspective, but as you mentioned viewing on our end you get the impression that the 77" is slightly washed out compared to the 83". Almost like someone mis adjusted the contrast setting. I know the human eye sees things differently than the camera but awesome content and review. Currently I am viewing with a LGZ2 88" in a light controlled environment. Excellent black level and peak brights. Bright scenes that could make one snow blind. :)
Cannot imagine what a similar scene would do on the 77" G3.
Came from a UST 100" projector. Although the size was cool and color saturation was awesome with the tri laser system. The low-level blacks were not to my standard and the handling of HDR tone mapping required a Lumigan added to the system to be correct. Keep up the great work. I enjoy your comments and quality of your content.

@@MightyBeast76 thats funny - my old Sony 75 (XG9505) used to do that quite often. I would turn it on and it would have to re-boot itself. Probably twice a month. And that TV was almost top-end, and 2019…
Having the G3 and X95L … Your in a unique position to help me!
My reasons not for the G3 were possible Coil Whine, and people on forums talk about VRR flickering in dark scenes. Have you experienced either?
Are you happy with the Sony, or would you swap it for a G3 83 given the chance?
I’m super stuck between the two. Have seen an LG G3 77 in the shops, not an 83, and have not seen the Sony either (no where near has them on display).

@@user-qj9xg8iq3m With the G3, when it comes to image artifacts, I haven’t noticed any, to be humble. Comparing color quality, I think the G3 looks prettier, but Sony’s tv looks really awesome as well. Everyone that visits me, gets enchanted by the image quality and colors of the Sony TV. The main reasons I chose Sony, over LG was the lack of MLA on the biggest sized G3 version, price difference and that with Sony, I wouldn’t have to fear screen degradation for quite a while.
I can definitely 100% tell you that having a C2 in my kids room, and a G3 in our bedroom, the kids have claimed the Sony one for their main viewing choice :)

We spent some time yesterday at Best Buy comparing the 77" G3 to the 83" G3 in order to decide whether the MLA panel should be critical to our decision. We had already ordered the 83" size as our viewing distance is about 18', but this video made me want to confirm the decision while there was still time to cancel the order. Best Buy had the two TVs mounted on the wall next to each other in a brightly lit showroom. Both were at the same brightness settings (including Vivid mode), and the pictures were synced and could be paused on whatever image we wanted to examine closely.
We found that details emerged from the shadows more clearly on the 77" set, but details in bright patches of the picture were more discernible on the 83" set. Oddly enough, front- and side-lit facial shots were consistently brighter on the 83" set. Both sets were plenty bright for viewing any content in the showroom. Bottom line: we did notice differences between the two TVs, but they cut both ways and left us finding no reason to prefer one image over the other for general viewing. Given that, the size of our TV room made the larger set the better choice for us.

Excellent question, and I myself have struggled with it in the same way. However, as good as the MLA G3 is, it simply can't grow in size. You guys need the size for your seating distance. Your comparison convinces me that I was right to cancel. MLA is a big step forward, and QD-OLED is still better to my tastes, and so it just seems wrong to spend so much money on a brand new TV that is a few years behind on important tech.

Personally I think TVs have gotten brave enough that is about processing and imagery and it's gone far past how much light comes into a room anymore
Unless I'm seeing something wrong through your camera the larger TV is much more detailed.
LG just took the same technology and made it brighter vs using quantum dots to vary the colour spectrum.
I think the 83 inch without MLA if you are looking at something at that size and have a theatre space for gaming and everything else is best pick. Again unless it's your camera at the light of the 77 mla is taking away from the detail.

Two battles that I have dreamed of while watching this video: a hypothetical 83 inch LG G4 with MLA vs. a hypothetical Samsung S95D QD-OLED in 2024, and an 83 inch G3 versus an 88 inch 8K LG Z3 which has MLA once the Z3 is released later this year.

Ultimately I think we will appreciate the 83" size vs 77" brightness - but one question I have: in this test the settings are the same (which I understand for a fair comparison) ... however, can the 83 settings be bumped up a little bit to help compensate for the dimmer black detail?

Great video and helpful in my purchasing decision. I see how the MLA screen has whiter whites and better dark detail. On some of the regular content the MLA panel looked washed out in comparison but I think overall the MLA tech is great. My 2 year old top shelf Samsung died so I can't wait. I decided on the G3 over the C4. I can pickup a G3 in 83" for 3700.00. Great deal considering. I can't go down in size. I think for my first OLED this tv will make me happy. I am wondering if there is a setting or calibration that would give the G3 more shadow detail. The Sony A95L looks great too but it only comes in a 77" panel and is crazy expensive. I had a B7 for a while but returned it because of severe glare but a pretty good set too.

If this C2 was my first OLED i'd be on the moon. But you get used to perfect black levels and expect it. The C2 doesn't support DTS for some weird reason, the B7 and C9 do support DTS, the newer C3 does as well. I'd get either the C2 or C3, whichever is less money.

It’s such a hard decision: I really love the water scenes on the 83: it looks like if you can dive into the water. It looks so realistic and way better than the 77. Also in the bright colourful scenes it looks like more depth.
But the 77 MLA: the details in the dark scenes and snowy scene: amazing!! That 83 really seems to fail in the dark scenes.
So two totally contradictory feelings. Is there a possibility to change the setting from the 77 so the water looks as realistic as the 83? Or will than that amazing details of the 77 in the dark en white scenes disappear? Hope to get a respond. Thanks!

  • @floz9718

    Great comparison Brian.
What I would be interested in though, is if the G3 in 83" brings anything to the table compared to the C3?
I would guess that buying the G3 this year (and as you said, maybe even next year still) is a very poor decision since the C3 most likely brings you 98% there in terms of PQ at a much lower cost.
The C3 seems to be pretty much the same as the G2 in terms of brightness, it was measured to hit around 900 nits so a little lower than the G2 with peak brightness in small highlights but it's better than the G2 in terms of ABL, so higher APL scenes are brighter on the C3. I doubt that the G3 will be much brighter because of it's heatsink, maybe it hits solid 1000 nits? Maybe a little brighter in high APL scenes?
Either way, I very much doubt that the cost of the G3 is worth it compared to the C3 at the 83" size...

I was in the store this weekend (in something like a Swiss Best Buy equivalent) to check out the new TVs. Unfortunately they didn't have the G3 or C3 yet nor the Samsung S95C :( ^
They only had the S90C which didn't have a remote to play around though...
I have to say though; now I get your statment that 83" is significantly larger thatn a 77" - it's certainly true! They had a C2 in 83" next to a 77" next to a 65" so you could compare them really good. The jump from 77 to 83 almost feels like 65 to 77! The numbers wouldn't reflect that but it's true. I kinda wanna forgoe the 77" now (I have a 65") and go straight to the 83"🤦‍♂🤣
I could play around with them with the remote so I was able to put them in FMM and activate dejudder and man, the C2 in such big sizes looks absolutely beautiful! I almost took a 77" home with me since it was on sale😁🤣
I also looked for uniformity issues via YT testclips but it was almost impossible to see anything under such bright lights. Dark uniformity was not visible but I could see some pink tint with 100% whites a little more on the 83", the 77" was pretty clean.
They also had an A95K, QD-Oled really gives the colours some pop! But the blacks also look very reaised, even the QLEDs had better blacks in this bright environement! The better contrast on the QD-Oleds still shows though. While it looks stunning (the Sony), I would take a bigger C2 over it any day.
