All the city tutorials I've seen so far (might be because I'm quite new to Blender), usually take several hours to make. I'm happy that there is a shorter way to do cities, especially when it doesn't feel like worth 4-5 hours. Thank you!
Ok, someone tell Andrew Price that Blender tutorial makers are not all idiot on youtube. The thing that caught my attention is not the render, but the solution for place antennas and roofs all over. Easy and pure genius, you have my +sub.
For those having problems extruding (or going to edit mode), try this: After importing the city .osm file, click Select > Select all by type > Mesh. Then join press Ctrl + J to join all mesh objects. Now you can go to Edit mode (Tab) and extrude the buildings (E). That worked for me.
Hi, Gleb. A nice tut. Just wanted to say that I'm from Vilnius and it is super nice and weird at the same time to find a random tutorial and to hear a teacher just pick a random city from a little known country... And that city is mine. Nice. Thanks for the tutorial and all the best.
Gleb Alexandrov OK, Gleb ))) but isn' it just final impression what counts ?? I am REALLY impressed w/this. Blender workflow model is a challenge to me, learned on CAD software. But i am resting&getting inspiration watching the video like yours! Congrats!
very clever treatment of textures... quick and dirty application with specific alterations where needed. Great way to get to a great looking, relatively low poly city.
I'm blown away....this is more that I could ask for...now let's hope it work for the location I'm looking for....either way thank you thank you for sharing this!
Thank you so much, I have looked all over the internet for how to design unique building structures and this is by far the most creative way to go about it.
i like what you do,fast, simple and short,yessssss...it is not like those other tutorials eventhough they are also great.thanks.now i am taking my classes from you.
This thumbnail looks utterly gorgeous, despite being created instead of actually taking a photograph of the desolency. Also, I thought that the tutorial would be really complex and long; since the place looks really vast, but it oddly was just right! Well done, my lad!
+Thatrandomguy Fromchile He's not coming back. He came through the door and I sniped him and I took all his links and buried them all. You see, no one challenges my authority.
Wow, thats totally awesome! I spendet months to create my city: City Project Final Animation - Blender 2.71 But you are doing it in minutes and it looks amazing!
Thank you for this short tutorials! Blender seems so easy to use. I'm using it since one day to combine it with studiophotography and it's amazing how fast i created a realistic foggy landscape.
Thank you! You guys are taking Blender to another level. And you spend your time developing your skills so that we can learn from people like you. Thank you much Gleb!
6:04 - Blender 2.73 can render volumetric effects while the camera being in the volume, allegedly. So that information is no longer true (although it was when the tutorial was released). Just pointing it out.
I love the soundtrack and this guy's accent is awesome and blends well with the atmosphere of the video :) Great Work on the Tutorial, I ended up giving up though halfway through as certain texturing didn't work once I had extruded the buildings with the city I chose. (Newport Wales UK)
Nice tut. I think a little bit more explanation will be a great help for blender beginners. Like I am unable to extrude building. Please keep uploading.
Wow, you sure know your way around Blender! I've been doing experiments with Blender since I got to know it a few years back, but only did a few real (well, hobby) 'projects'. This video contained a few 'Aha' moments for me, uncovering ways to do thing easier than expected, very nice ...
The "after some tweaking" part is like the stickman that turns into a full blown realiatic character. Could you elaborate on your final tweaks next time? Keep it up, great work!
Me before watching: This guy must only show how to make the fog! He can't make a tutorial only in 7 minutes! Me after watching: I was wrong... This is gold.
I am from Vilnius (Lithuania) and I was realy proud about what you said about my town.
Thanks dude.
That's what I think :) Thanks!

Time is money :)

The hair system for the accessories on top of the buildings was really clever. That and the 'select similar' + randomize height. Very good tutorial.
For those having problems extruding (or going to edit mode), try this:
After importing the city .osm file, click Select > Select all by type > Mesh.
Then join press Ctrl + J to join all mesh objects. Now you can go to Edit mode (Tab) and extrude the buildings (E).
That worked for me.
Don't work :(
Try deselecting "map.osm" object, then merging. Might work
Wow this was a really good tutorial and it only took 7 minutes. This is so much better than labouring away for an hour or so.
This is really great, I am a 3ds Max user for many years. I am getting more and more into Blender as it allows me to teach with it.
Congratulations Gleb, I think you are doing the best Blender tutorials in the world. Short and sweet.
you've explained each steps short and very straight forward to the point. Thanks for the video.

I love visiting Vilnius, so it's a conscious choice :))
Absolutely brilliant tutorial
Simple steps for a really beautiful result.
City. From scratch. Tutorial.
Nope, but why not? )
Gleb, i am impressed w/ your Blender fluency, dont be greedy ;-), share a link where you learned Blender's workflow that good ?
Zyzo, you may have this impression because I edited video (and sped it up considerably ;)
Gleb Alexandrov OK, Gleb ))) but isn' it just final impression what counts ?? I am REALLY impressed w/this. Blender workflow model is a challenge to me, learned on CAD software.
But i am resting&getting inspiration watching the video like yours! Congrats!
Saw this thing on Blendernation some time ago, bookmarked and forgot. But yeah, later on it proved to be quite useful snippet!
very clever treatment of textures... quick and dirty application with specific alterations where needed. Great way to get to a great looking, relatively low poly city.
you nailed it. ;)

I'm pretty sure people have told you before but...
you are a genius!
I had no idea you could create a city like that.
This thumbnail looks utterly gorgeous, despite being created instead of actually taking a photograph of the desolency. Also, I thought that the tutorial would be really complex and long; since the place looks really vast, but it oddly was just right! Well done, my lad!
this was one of the most awesome videos I have seen done so quickly.
You can't find a blender tutorial better than this one. You just can't.
+SVAFnemesis I just found tons of them ;)
Sub Zero I demand all their links.
+Thatrandomguy Fromchile He's not coming back. He came through the door and I sniped him and I took all his links and buried them all. You see, no one challenges my authority.
+SVAFnemesis I am better
+SilencerOftheHills Akira Yamaoka is better
let me say this, I am not blender user, but I really enjoy your techniques in blender.
You are so creative.
To create a city from scratch you must first create the universe....
only a small section of the universe for rendering : ^ )
Uhh... we're not creating apple pie...
*slow clap*
I am imagining you rereading this message after four years
@@medbendi6445 I am new to blender and 3 d creations.
Please advise, if we do some programming in blender 2.8

The results are amazing.
Impressive! And the explanations are quite easy when you explain!

I love it. Bored to death from unwrapping. So true. I guess if it doesn't line up, just add more particles to the fog and cover it up a bit. :)
