ATTENTION VIEWERS. Yeah I know. I said Stephen Pearcy when I clearly meant Stephen Perkins. My bad. I'm drinking way too much during this damn quarantine.
LOL! I'll forgive the RATT faux pas. Stephen Perkins is awesome though! Hey Bro, just wanna say I love the channel. Fellow GenX drummer here, 45 years young. I saw the Pumpkins live 5 times. Jimmy was, and still is my favorite drummer of the era, and all time. Weckl's probably better; just more cerebral, but I didn't go through the 90's teen years with Dave Weckl like I did with Jimmy, Dave Abbruzese, Stephen Perkins, Matt Cameron, and Tim "Herb" Alexander. So many good memories from the last great rock and roll era, when yes, we didn't have the internet, smart phones, had to work through Legend Of Zelda and Metroid with nothing more than Nintendo Power magazine! Keep it real brother!
Yes, Billy Corgan has mentioned My Bloody Valentine as 1 of his influences. In fact, that's how I learned about MBV. There was a Guitar Magazine interview with Corgan and he listed off a bunch of his influences. MBV was definitely 1 of them. I think he mentioned their "Loveless" album specifically.
Jimmy Chamberlain is one the most underrated drummers ever in my opinion, geek usa crushes
He isn’t underrated man he’s a GOD in the drumming community, if you’re just discovering him CONGRATS :) just listening to JC makes you better lol
He's not a god in the drumming community. He's not up there with buddy, Vinnie, gadd, etc.
@@HughMorristheJoker lol. okay, champ
@@HughMorristheJoker no
Nothing will ever top Cherub Rock for me. The groove is so deep.
I still believe that the Smashing Pumpkins' Prog Pop-Metal is the definitive 90s sound.
Sadly, a sound lost to time.
It's still out there.
What?
@@furiouslysad5807 the sound I mean. Many bands do it.
@@PhoenixDecim Not any bands with the scope, ambition and craft of the Pumpkins.
@Sensible Talk Their recent output does not match the quality of their 90s period. Also, Alternative Rock is now a fringe sound - it's finally alternative.
" D'arcy we meet again" 😂😂 that was Great!
so genuine ahahah
I've seen Jimmy and Danny Carey live many times, and I will take Jimmy every single time.
Oh stop it
That's quite a statement, I'm die hard for jimmy and Danny is one of the only ones I could say hold a candle to his tastiness
Same here
**HOT TAKE ALERT**
... also happens to be correct, lol. I think it's impossible to really compare solid A-tier drummers/S-tier rock drummers.
Also seen both. It is pretty impressive how much Danny Carey's technique broadened during Tool's early years. With Chamberlain, you listen to Gish and dude is already so incredibly talented, super tight, lots of jazz, syncopation, etc- then hear him live adding so many nuanced fills.. and doing it consistently 25 bpm faster than the album version, lol
This comment is gold!
Jimmy Chamberlain strung out/ "Riding the White Horse" is still better than 97% of the drummers on Earth.
Totally stoked on this. Jimmy is a HUGE influence for me. Hell I even own a sizeable chunk of his silver sparkle tour kit from 2007. Thanks for doing this, Gen X for the win
That’s so cool
Shit - I was wondering who got that kit!.....from "The Drum Pad" in Chicago right?....You lucky devil- Cheers!
@@bricktopperheadon5490 Thanks much, I am honored to have it
Watching Jimmy play is hypnotizing.
Jimmy is my favorite drummer too. Thanks for the video. Jimmy had a baseball injury during childhood that forces his pinky out. Also, some of his best drumming is on Machina/Machina 2. Listen to the tracks Glass and the Ghost Children (Machina 1), Home, and Cash Car Star (Machina 2)
Saying that Billy Corgan just "owns his own wrestling promotion" is a HUGE understatement, he owns the ENTIRE NWA National Wrestling Alliance trademark, match catalog, video library and title belts. It's crazy!!!
Love all your videos man, keep up the great work and stay safe!!
Glad you mentioned the pinky finger - always noticed that and can’t believe he gets the sound and speed he does with this technique. Amazing left foot too - super coordinated
The solo in question.... It is Billy and James together both soloing.
Speaking of off-time crowds, sometimes it's also because the sound takes a short while to teach them. From their end, they're clapping on time. From your side, it sounds like they're lagging.
Back in my college orchestra days, we had one gig at a pretty big theater and my monitor stopped working. At that point, I couldn't hear the orchestra I was playing with. Only the echo of our playing from the back bleachers. That was a nightmare! I had to stop listening to everyone else but myself and rely on our conductor's baton and sheet music to ensure I didn't go off time. It was like playing a second ahead of a play-along track while staying on time.
Geek USA seems to be THE song written just for Jimmy. He is a best!!!
As a Xenial (was born in 77), I relate big time with your synopsis of being a Latch Key kid! Spot on sir.
Corgan/Chamberlin is the PB&J of 90's Alternative Rock. Sweet perfection...
Also the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex album "Life Begins Again" is pretty awesome once you give it a few spins. Some amazing drumming on it.
Been waiting for Jimmy Chamberlain. Great video as always 👍
I look forward to your videos every day, dude! Especially lately with everything that’s going on. Thankful to have someone like you who breaks everything down in a well thought out, productive manner. So thankful for what you do, man, keep it up!!!!
Thank you!!
Hell yeah. Jimmy is a bad ass
Yes, Billy is very influenced by my bloody Valentine. He is friends with Kevin Shields.
Check out Talking Heads by Black Midi live at Flesh and Bones! Morgan Simpson is a monster
Jimmy was awesome then and still awesome now. That combo of blazing speed and power is a winner!
I've been busy man but so glad and happy you finally covered Jimmy along with Stewart Copeland - two of my all time favorite drummers along with Travis Barker and Chad Smith. 🙌 Would love to see another video of them again; Travis, Stewart, and Jimmy, but different songs. 😎🤙
Hey man, you should check out Brian Chippendale. He's an artist and aggressive drummer for Lightning Bolt and Black Pus.
Lol I said the same thing on another video yesterday. I think the Dead Cowboy performance in Japan would be a great one.
Ok, u had me at “just remember when u say jimmy chamberlin is your favorite drummer, your thinking your cheating on Danny Carey”😂😂😂😂😂❤️
You NEED to react to the new Trivium song "what the dead men say." Alex Bent goes absolutely insane on the drums
The Metro show of The Smashing Pumpkins playing Fuck You (An Ode to No One) is probably the best version of the song and Jimmy Chamberlin goes off the rails.
Jimmy is my favourite drummer. When you're doing ghost notes and you can still hammer a note, you hold the stick differently. This is why Jimmy holds his little pinky out, for a soft note. I have the same technique. If someone has the same technique, you batter on, why? You were meant to be a drummer! I know drummers trying to do ghost notes with a full fist, ain't going to work. Long story short, if your technique works open hand, stick with it!
If you ever get around to covering Jimmy again, check out his work on the Zwan song Lyric.
Fantastic content and analysis man, Jimmy is such an absolute magician, those first 3 records are all timers, (self hating millennial here), saw them live 2 years ago and I’ve never been so awestruck by the effortless savant drumming I witnessed, insane the guy was so into smack, his brain should be studied.
Love your channel and was sooo stoked to see you review one of the top underrated drummers of any era. Then I watch you say absolutely nothing insightful about his drumming…try again, he’s worth it.
Corgan played the solo. I would’ve appreciated more comments on the the fills.
LOL @the idea that Billy Corgan taught Jimmy anything about drumming!
I think Jimmy Chamberlain addressed his tom set up as basically a 5/6 piece drum kit with an extra larger tom.
Yo, call it a merch table. Why not?
I'd love to see you analyse Keith Moon and The Who playing 'A Quick One While He's Away' from The Rolling Stones Rock 'n' Roll Circus 1968. Loved your love for Meg White, another standout 'unusual' drummer. Would be very interested to hear what you think of Keith in that legendary performance.
Funny that you say they sound like My Bloody Valentine cuz Billy said he was mainly inspired by Kevin
I'd love a breakdown on Geek USA. Also I play with the pinky out with no formal training because I just watched Jimmy videos to learn lol.
That guitar solo is both Billy and James. Billy plays most of the solos in "I Am One", but during that section they both do a unison line.
Steve Pearcy is from Ratt (I think?)... Stephen Perkins plays drums in Jane's Addiction. Haha I know it was just a slip up
Dammit!
Definitely Ratt lol. Side note, Bobby Blotzer, Ratt's drummer was sick!
My music teacher in school used to say if he catches us playing “tea time” he’d come cut our pinkies off with pliers.
Your teacher didn't know Spivack technique
Been waiting for this for awhile. Thank you.
It would be nice to see an analysis on the song streetcrawaler by Jimmy Chambelin complex.
He plays very differently on Jimmy Chamberlin complex compared to how he plays in the Smashing Pumpkins.
Let's fucking go Jimmy is my favorite drummer and smashing pumpkins I'd my favorite band ya
I have seen the original. He is just amazing to watch.
Recently, Billy Corgan did an Instagram live stream where he talked about their 1st album and he went through all of the songs. About this song (I am One), he said that he was the one who came up with this drum beat, that he programmed a drum machine and then showed it to Jimmy.
J. C. Is one of the best . Can bring the soft then the thunder.
Bullet With the Butterfly Wings was the song you were singing.
Danny Carey couldn't carry Chamberlin's jock.
I hope this is said in jest. I like Jimmy, but come on... who are you trying to kid here?
Now you need to find a drum cam of 'Tonight Tonight' so we can take in Jimmy's glorious control & consistency in those snare rolls
No excuses for not keeping up with the Pumpkins - 'Adore' & 'Machina' may not be for everyone(I love Adore personally, but it's definitely a departure lol), but everything from 'Zeitgeist' forward has been amazing. 'Zeitgeist' is frankly pretty underrated and is a REAL heavy rock album, in Pumpkins style, Jimmy sounds amazing just beating on his kit. I really had my doubts about 'Oceania', but it's legitimately some of Billy's best song writing(don't have to like his ego, but he's a hell of a song writer, guitar player, and all around musician).
You're missing out if you haven't listened to the post-Machina Pumpkins, Billy & Jimmy have continued to do incredible work, their abilities haven't fallen off a bit!
How to make a millennial giggle- say “five muscles on a stick”
Thanks Steve. Cool vid.
Zero muscles in your fingers though
I’ve been saving this video for when I have a good hot cup of coffee. Today was the day. That snare sound in the first album. Mmmm.
Awesome buddy... thanks!!!
Trying to learn stand inside your love as a beginner. Its kicking my butt, but I love it because I love Jimmy!
Pinkpop festival, 1994. For anyone who is curious as to when this performance took place.
And Billy played the lead solo.
Thank you Kristopher, that is correct. Billy also played bass on the albums, but please don't tell anyone ;-)
It's Murray Spivack technique and grip. Please check it out.
if you haven't seen it yet one of my favorite metal drum songs is Bleed - Meshuggah its one of a kind. Tomas Haake i feel is in a league of his own.
Just came across this guy analyzing all these drummers...Tomas Haake would be a GREAT one for him to do!! Djent (polyrhythms) have really taken over the metal scene with bands like Periphery, and that can really be traced back to Meshuggah. Bleed, Dancers to a Discordant System, or even Born In Dissonace (which hits you out the gate like a ton of bricks).
Can we just appreciate his high hat foot just keeping time while he’s all over the set
Nick Menza was a jazz drummer too.
Love this videos. As a guitarist I find it fascinating...
10:56 Bullet with Butterfly Wings
i have never fangirled so fucking hard oh my god
100% right about the 1st 3 Pumpkins albums.
They were AMAZING.
And then Adore happened.
I've said since the beginning, that era of the Pumpkins, when Jimmy was out, was when they were at their worst. Billy is a genius guitar player and a mediocre singer. But without Jimmy's tight, perfectly inserted drumming, Pumpkins sound like mush.
Which is why the only Post-90s Pumpkins album that ever hit heavy rotation for me when Zeitgeist, when Jimmy returned in 2007. It's back to what made them great.
Check it out.
I hated Adore when it first came out. It took awhile but now it makes sense. Great album.
Any less than FIVE fingers on either stick would result in my drum teacher standing behind me like a looming shadow. Once my teacher was in my field of vision I KNEW the pain was coming.......and one of my sticks would be FLYING across the room. Most lessons ended with sore knuckles.
Question; I bought a kit 15yrs ago, and tried to start playing. At the time, the job I had didn't allow me to take lessons, so I watched a bunch of youtube videos and occasionally met with my friend that sold me the kit. The problem I was having was that I am left handed, and was trying to play a right handed setup. I naturally want to lead with my left, kick with my left, but because I do so many things ambidextrously I can't seem to coordinate anything that resembles a groove... I recently reached out to that friend who's still a gigging drummer about playing again, and proposed that I try a left handed setup. He too is left handed, learned to play righty due to gigs, house kits, etc... However, he suggested I try to play open handed. I noticed that you have covered a few drummers that play open handed i.e. Carter Beaufort, Danny Carey, and it appears Jimmy Chamberlin. Would you consider revisiting these artists, and breaking down the open handed technique for dumb dildo's like myself who are in there 40's and just want to play the instrument that they've been enamored with since childhood? Also Nicko McBrain, and a Peter Criss/Eric Carr before after video would be incredible!
Thank you for the amazing content, I look forward to your next video.
Nah Jimmy just likes his ride cymbal
Millennials are in their late and early 30’s. Many of them also grew up on this. Gen Z is listening to SoundCloud rappers. That’s needs clarification
Yeah. I was in my 20's in all throughout the 90's and I thought that Gen X were those born in the second half of the 60's and 70's. when i think of gen x i think of teens in the 80's [where the term was coined from, actually] and early 90's with the grunge explosion.
In my top 3. Which are just how much I enjoy listening to them.
Oh man, you need to check out Damon Che from Don Caballero, one of the greatest and weirdest drummers ever.
Hmmm, I always play with my pinky out. I have more control rather than grabbing the stick with the entire hand. Good video though.
🤗 I’m so happy right now!
And I would never cheat on Danny... Jimmy is like my favorite first serious love/boyfriend, Danny is the big daddy who finally made me commit. 😁😜
GEN X 🤘😍 Jimmy Chamberlin waybadass
Best drummer in the world
Hey Junkdrummer!
I’m not too sure about recommending drummers to you, but if you are interested in Tech-Death-Prog Metal I warmly recommend Obscura for you. It’s a German band from Bavaria and they are incredible in every way. There are some drum playthroughs in a good quality so you can’t pick a “wrong” example.
Greetings from Bavaria over the pond! Cheers, Martin
Steven Pearcy is the singer from Ratt. Steven Perkins is the drummer from JA. Tell me more.

Nice TDK Joker shirt man
Please do another Jimmy Chamberlin analysis - Tristessa or Hummer
Maybe do a reaction video to Sean Kinney from Alice In Chains? (:
Speaking tom grooves, then later in 96 Danny Carey shows the world who’s boss with, “H”.
You're right about Jimmy and his drum accents definitely helped Billy a lot. Especially in the later years when Billy gave up on his singing, imo. That's why him and Billy have been inseparable whenever Jimmy has stayed clean. Billy admits it here that the Smashing Pumpkins are Jimmy and himself.

Stephen Pearcy sang for Ratt. Stephen Perkins played for Janes. #roundandround #genx
Yeah. My bad.
good vid. subbed
This drum cam might be a little earlier- 1990 Chester Thompson playing with Phil Collins- ruclips.net/video/dhwjcg6TeO0/видео.html
i don’t see enough people fanboy over jimmy chamberlin so this is a pleasant surprise
Hit the nail on the head Jimmy is hardcore for sure
I must have jimmy chamberlin skills then😳😎. My pinkys 💁🏻♂️
7:07 Billy, always Billy. He probably never let James solo...ever
it's Billy, but James plays some filler parts towards the end of this solo.
of course James does play solos (ok, solo-ish fills; check out siva, rhinoceros, cherub rock, quiet, geek usa. .)
there are quite a few across Gish and Siamese Dream that He
Excellent choice. Really talented drummer that shaped my 90's as well. One of my top 5 (my GenX:ines shining through). Speaking of technically interesting drummers, have you heard of Tomas Haake/Meshuggah?
How about taking a look at Paulina Villarreal of The Warning? Here she is at 10 years old: ruclips.net/video/MUAhV8K-v3A/видео.html (the last 60 seconds especially), at 14: ruclips.net/video/E62SVvLw9FI/видео.html , and at 16: ruclips.net/video/TeIbG8nkOiU/видео.html
Yeah, this is the intro to the album... One of the best drummers in the world.... I grew up on Gish on up... This album and Siamese are masterpieces... I think his best drumming is on SD... Great vid... and yeah D'arcy...
I always liked the silverfuck drums.
Love this
It’s almost always Billy playing when it’s shred time. James isn’t much of a chops guy with his guitar playing
alex van halen was a jazz guy at first i believe....can hear it occasionally in his playing
Should check out drums on Gospel - As Far As You Can Throw Me. One of the best drummers around and the band only had two albums. Jazz infused post rock. Each song is a instructional on how to be sickZ
Man I was hoping to god this was silverfuck from pinkpop 94 I think it was. Already a difficult song to play and he does it double time.
Im sure youve gotten these requests but id love to see you do a react to meshuggah and Alex Rundinger with The Faceless and I almost forgot Dillinger Escape plan!
Check one of Jimmy doing Geek USA
That song rips. Jimmy is a god.
pinky out increases speed and fulcrum
DYING 😂😂😂 "The reason I'm going to point this out is because, if you're watching this, you're more than likely NOT Jimmy Chamberlin and you cannot get away with this shit" 😂😂😂😂😂😂
7:07 the solo would probably be Billy Corgan. He seems to take the job of lead guitarist
