ATTENTION VIEWERS!!! I apologize for the awkward cut at the end of the video. I was put in RUclips jail, AGAIN. I'm gonna figure out a way around this in the future!
You're awesome dude! You remind me of my step-dad (that's a compliment I promise.)
@@ellieosteen thank you!
Enjoying your channel and reviews my friend. Actually learn a good bit just by your analysis. And RUclips jail?
@@robertstephens6541 copyright claimed a section of the video, therefore taking away my monetization. It's a pain.
Just add some left wing politics to your channel. They’ll never copywrite claim you again! Lol
Lmao "This sounds like when Lars Ulrich could play drums well" Ah ha ha... Yeah I remember those days.
Those were good days
@@JunkdrummerTV Absolutely! When I think of how long I've been a fan of those guys is when it sets in that I'm getting old. Hell, Cliff was still alive!
I paused the video when he said that and went to find some ice, DAMN
Honestly, the Rev was far more talented than Lars... He played drums, guitar and piano. As well as the sole writer of Avenged Sevenfold's masterpiece "A Little Piece of Heaven".
Slippy Jones He could sing too
you should check out his studio session for Almost Easy!
I second this recommendation
I 3rd this, full recording, no 2nd take, proper professional.
I'll be the fifth
Entered the room, killed the song in 1 take, leave like a legend.
I was going to say the same thing
If you haven’t already you should definitely check out some of their songs from The Stage. They brought in brooks wackerman and he absolutely killed it.
The Stage is absolutely amazing song
The Stage is one of the best songs ever made.....and I'm a fan of 14 years. Not a noob.
Brooks is an amazing fit with Avenged
Guitar is good I mean the solo and jazz parts but the drums are basic in the stage Jimmy could have done a much better job
@@BfaltS1K Mate have you even listened to The Stage? The drumming is anything but basic. Just listen to the intro and tell me that its basic.
Just want to note that the studio versions weren't recorded with triggers or his own kit. He used a small kit with extremely thick maple shells to get that tight "pop" sound in the snare on the album, his drum tech talked about it on a forum a while back, they overtuned a 9 ply maple snare as far as they could and tuned the bass and toms way up so get a "lead" drum sound.
I always wondered how the fuck he got that snare song. My all time favorite snare on any album. The closest to it I’d say is Jay Weinbergs live snare.
@@psnpanuch8142 Note: i'm not responsible for any snare heads broken trying this, lol.
😆. They did it better/smarter than me. I tried using a kevlar marching snare head on my 6.5 inch steel snare and sheared the lugs! This was when I was in high school
Still can’t even watch Jimmy play without tearing up man
I'm right there with you man..
Same here. Everytime I see him play or hear him in the background.
The Rev had an enlarged heart and was certain to die young and with pain. I can also respect him because he left this world on his own terms, if that's what happened. He wrote Brompton Cocktail and Fiction, songs that were possibly about his upcomming suicide.
Ofcourse as an outsider I don't know what did or didn't happen, but Jimmy Sullivan for sure was a genius and someone for me to look up to. Living life to the fullest in his own way.
Matt wrote Brompton Cocktail. The official word from his family is that it wasn't intentional, Jimmy would never take his own life.
No one knows, only Jimmy. But Fiction was a good Bye note to the band. And when I was doing research for a fb topic I did not find evidence that he hade heart problems from young age, people say he did but could not find facts about it. It was found that he had a enlarged heart after he passed, that was the only thing I found. Brompton Cocktail was written by Jimmy, Matt and don't remember if there where anyone else also.
@@TobbeBoll He wrote Fiction while still in his High School band "Pinkly Smooth" (an incredible Avant Garde Goblin Metal Band". It wasn't a suicide note. And yeah he was born with an enlarged heart but his drug use made it worse. It was an accidental suicide of pills and alcohol. Similar to John Bonham.
@@modifidious7171 You would need to give me some references of those claims, because what you wrote is very different. To know if it has anything to do with reality, it needs to be proven with facts. And I have a feeling that many viewers comments is about what they wish would happened rather than what actually happened. I
@@TobbeBoll Avenged Sevenfold themselves stated that Fiction was in fact a song Jimmy had wrote in Pinkly Smooth. Syn confirmed it because he was in Pinkly Smooth with Jimmy. This is fact. Jimmy was also born with an enlarged heart that caused organ issues. His family has made statements on all of this. I used to be a die hard A7X fan in high school when this happened. I was there for all of it and you should be able to look all this up. It's public record. But yes he did die from a combination of alcohol and prescription pills.
If you want to check out the song itself, i recommend the Live in the LBC version.
I love this. The only thing. Its constant camera changes.
Yes
There will never be another drummer like jimmy. I was blessed to have seen him perform live twice before he passed away. First time I saw them was the live in LBC dvd show front of the pit. Nothing will describe being at that concert in person and how amazing it was
Groove, attack, speed, all in one song. One of my favorite songs to drum to because of the diversity of the drum composition
You should check out "Jimmy The Rev Drumming in Studio "Almost Easy""
those 16th ride hits always blow me away
please listen to blinded in chains the rev at his peak in my opinion
100%!! This is hands down my favorite drum track from The Rev. The man was a legend. May he rock in peace.
The break double bass gallops are sick.
Agree.
Big agree! City of Evil is my favorite album as far as drumming is concerned.
City of evil was one of my favorite albums when it comes to The Rev and his drumming!
I remember I was so into Avenged when he passed away. Sad day.
Great video, as per usual hehe
Theres a perfect vid of him drumming for almost easy. Also one of his craziest songs cause it was built around his drumming.
You're awesome man, I loved your PSA. Well done for this!
Don’t forget about those quarantined away from their drum set right now which is why I’m watching endless drumming videos
NuKillerX we have a shelter in place order now but I drove a couple hours to pack it up bring it back with me. If that’s not essential travel idk what is
New Danny Carey drum cam video for Pnuema was just released...
Nice job. You did my hero justice 👍🤘This song does have a old school metal and punk feel but alot of his catalog is technical drumming. The rest of this album is a great example 😁 check out the sounding the seventh trumpet stuff. He did the whole album in one take.
R.I.P The REV. this dude was the first guy to get my heart pumping since Vinnie Paul
I’ve been checking out all the Kirk Cobain documentaries lately. Layne Staley, Chris Cornell....how crazy there all gone. I got to see all of em’ before they died.
There's been too many to count in my short 56 years, the first one I can remember was Randy Rhoads ,came home turned the radio on the first thing I heard was the announcement. He played my town three months before he died, almost, could have, should have went
Next up from these guys: Nightmare - Mike Portnoy drum cam. Keep it up!
Thanks for doing this. I love The Rev. He was a great drummer but he also wrote songs like "A Little Piece of Heaven" which is a masterpiece. I also love hearing him singing in "Critical Acclaim." 💔
I hope I did him justice
This guy jealous.. I think..
rev was a beast...PSA was beautiful brother....great video
The Rev is the guy that got me started into double bass “metal” drumming. I love Jimmy so much. Too bad I never got to see him perform live.
Been in love with this band since 2015-2016 all the way to this present day. Fell in love with the revs drum skill since then. Wish he were alive by now. 💓
Hey, I’m not a drummer I don’t understand much of the stuff you say but I wanted to watch this because I’m a fan of Jimmy and I’ve been missing him lately, so I wanted to hear a professional’s thoughts about him. But I stayed for the way you spoke and the topics you touched upon. You give off a great energy and I wanted to thank you for this, made me smile
"... and for gods sake, Elliott Smith!" Haha nice one
The lockdown was no time for Elliott Smith.
Avenged Sevenfold actually started off as more of a hardcore band.
Metalcore
Hardcore is Napalm Death etc. A7X started off metalcore maybe second wave or later days of the scene
Yes, technically metalcore for sure. I just say hardcore because we always called the scene “hardcore” when it was technically metalcore/post-hardcore.
Syn Gates' dad is "Guitar Guy" for Comedian Jeff Dunham. He also played with them all at their Grammy Museum show
Thank you for doing this video! Huge fan of a7x, The rev is still one of mye favourite drummers!
I recomend everyone to check out "Avenged Sevenfold Presents Breakdown" on youtube!!! awesome breakdowns of old and new songs.
Cool videos Junkdrummer!
Thanks for 9:50 mate - really much appreciated.
Also I would love to see some Finnish masterclass Kai Hahto on this channel.
Rip Jimmy The Rev Sullivan..gone but not forgotten!! 🙏🙏
R.I.P Rev
I miss jimmy the rev and hearing his distinctive punch amazes me with the way he plays the drums. In my opinion the rev is the best drummer in the world that will never be replaced. You can check and see it more clearly when he plays in the studio with an almost easy song. foREVer.
I’m excited that you did this. Jimmy is my Top 8 and he deserves a lot of respect. Thank you, brother.
Apart from your thoughts on The Rev's drumming skills, thank you for your beautifull insight on how we should take care of someone who is going down the struggling road.
Mr. Junkdrummer, almost! a year later . . . how you doing? As a diehard Avenged Sevenfold fan, this video . . .The Rev would have loved it. Thank you.
Jimmy was a blessing in the drum world that we didn't have enough time to cherish.
City of Evil is one of the greatest albums of all time. Definitely in my top 10. They did some things that were unheard of...the raspy vocals, duo solos, double bass... took several old school rock/metal tropes and brought it to a new generation. It’s classic.
Would love to see a reaction to Mario Duplantier of Gojira. There is a great video of their song Toxic Garbage Island. He also has a RUclips channel where he uploads some drum solos
You will be big at RUclips because you are an honest guy and have a huge passion for what you love
The Rev will always be my hero. i even use his double ride set up on my 8 piece. Jimmy was one of the greatest drummer to walk this earth and he was a god of double bass.
Hey thank you very much for showing this. Please give us some quick thoughts on your listen to the full song. Moving on to check out some of your other videos. Thanks for the post!
I'm actually 90% certain I was at this exact show. Back in 05-06 I went to warped tour in Long Beach, and it was held in the college parking lot, I believe, and the buildings/parking structure in the back look exactly like that school. I stood near the huge trees in the back. This is when they released City of Evil. Blessed to have gotten to see Jimmy live. #A7X #foREVer
I’m a 20 year guitarist and recently started getting a lot more interested in drums. You have yourself a subscribe sir. 11pm nostalgia videos of the rev brought me here 🤟🏻
Subscribed! Love the content, the featured artist, inspiration, The Rev! Love also how this turned to be a highly comprehensive technical review for us aspiring drummers. Very proffessional and honest 🤘Now's the perfect time to use "teach me master!"
r.i.p. Rev so sorry that ur gone but so happy got to see him preformed b4 he passed that concert was the hit
stAyd hookd
god dam its been 2 years since I commented on this video ! Shit today is his birthday .
I met Nick Menza in the 90s at a party in Phoenix( he was actually there with the flotsam and jetsam singer Eric) then i went to leave in a friend's car and he was in the car went home and he partied at are place ! RIP
i fucking love steve! he is such a pure hearted person and a good human being. and his love of drumming in infectous. he has totally relit my flame for drumming, and inspired me to buy another kit.
Thank you so much. This comment made my day.
Yes! I'm so happy you finally did this reaction
I hope you enjoy!
Amazing commentary on an amazing drummer!! 10/10!!
Jimmy didn't kill himself, he had health problems and wouldn't have made it past 30, which he didn't unfortunately.
He killed himself because of that enlarged heart
No he did an accidental overdose on pain killer with alcohol
I'm pretty sure the enlarged heart thing is made up bs. He died of an accidental overdose, that's a fact
@@ShadowKiller571 your half right but he did have an enlarged heart but he took pain killers to stop the pain but he accidentally picked up a beer bottle and not water for the pills
Brompton cocktail.
Very good informal video. Huge Rev fan here! Good job brother.
You know when you've had a couple of wine's when you go to pause the video and try to click the 'pause' button within the overlay video instead of your own hahaha
For those that don’t know I’ve heard that Brompton cocktail was revs note and the song fiction was him saying his final goodbyes.
about the circumstances of his death, I just wanted to clarify his suicide was not due to anxiety or depression issues, he had physical issues that would have caused him a slow and painful death strapped to a hospital bed otherwise. so he decided to commit suicide so he didn't have to put himself or anyone else through that prolonged pain.
You’re completely wrong. His cause was of death is 100% confirmed to be an OD on opiates with alcohol usage. He was found dead in his house and never died in a hospital. His autopsy also confirmed that the cause of death was an accidental OD, and incidentally noted he had an enlarged heart due to years of drugs use and alcohol use. He had a serious cocaine addiction which caused his enlarged heart. He had no physical issues aside from years of struggling with addiction. He had been to rehab many times and he had a relapse which led to an OD. The band members have all said this. This autopsy has said this. I don’t know why people keep spreading this misconception that he died a slow, painful death or that he was suffering due to his enlarged heart. You don’t FEEL an enlarged heart. He died peacefully in his sleep after he stopped breathing due to the overdose of opiates and alcohol. The uploader of this video is entirely right.
@@ExternusArmy number 1, its impossible to prove it was accidental, and a lot of his body language showed that he at least knew he was going to die soon. Number 2, whatever the circumstances, I was mainly talking about the fact that even if he did commit suicide that it wasnt due to issues of depression or anxiety. Last of all, I was pretty sure that at some point someone said that he was born with an enlarged heart, although cocaine probably made the issue lethal.
@@jonathanbishop6205 he was never born with an enlarged heart. You don’t get born with an enlarged heart. Your heart grows with your body. Hearts enlarge due to the usage drugs like cocaine and alcohol. There are many stories of him doing lines of cocaine as thick and long as pencils. It’s called drug induced cardiac hypertrophy. And it was an accident according to the band members. He was having troubles singing his lines in the studio due to all the vocal damage from the alcohol he drank (alcohol causes heartburn and the acid damages the vocal cords). He never intended on committing suicide and Brian, Zacky, and the Rev all had a sober party the day before his death. He did struggle with anxiety and depression but his death was an accident. The usage of opiates and alcohol causes something called respiratory depression. Your brain stops telling your lungs to breathe and you suffocate in your sleep. This is just how drugs and addictions work. People keep spreading rumors about it having to do with his heart, but it was simply an accidental OD, nothing more, nothing less.
@@ExternusArmy ok, duh you can't be born with an enlarged heart, but there are heart conditions that cause your heart to increase in size, and there are also conditions that limit the size of the body yet the organs contimue to grow. I knos because I have a friend that has it. He had to take steroids to promote his bodies growth to keep up with his organs or they would've been crushed in a very excruciating and equally as lethal process.
@@jonathanbishop6205 It is entirely possible to find if it was accidental or not. There's a job just for that.
Well he recorded Sounding the Seventh Trumpet in one take. Thats crazy. RIP Rev! 🤟
Jimmy had an enlarged heart and chose not to share that with his bandmates. He knew his time was short. My best friend also had an enlarged heart and never told us. He passed away from a massive heart attack during a seizure at age 24.
RIP Jimmy...we will always miss you! ❤❤❤ #foREVer
The rev pretty much single handedly got me into drumming when I was 10
Thanks for doing this. He was my favorite drummer growing up.
It was my pleasure
Yet again -
Thanking you for the introduction to Avenged Sevenfold. Some very tasty stuff indeed.
You got my subscription soley from your kind words, well played man
I’m still here in the form of brooks 💖
foREVer
You should watch him in AFTERLIFE! He is the best!
Dude he was such a gnarly drummer. We definitely miss the rev..
Well, you have to keep in mind that he had an enlarged heart which would cause a painful death and was told that he wasn't going to live that long so he OD not because he was necessarily hooked on drugs but rather to end his life in a more peaceful way as you can say.
That's a good way of putting it. Some people just aren't healthy enough to party like he did. And his partying was legendary.
@@JunkdrummerTV He partied so hard because he knew he had limited time.
His family have stated that it wasn't suicide or intentional, and it would be completely unlike Jimmy.
@@VoidSixx No one knows, only Jimmy. Fiction was a good bye letter to the band. Where is the facts he hade heart problems since young age, did only find facts that they found out he had enlarged heart after he passed away.
What does "enlarged heat" mean? I still don't understand that.
Another thing he did very well was switch between the feels within double time beats. A few times in this song he switches from playing the upbeats to the downbeats on the snare
Love the positivity man!
To your point, I've always thought of AX7 as a modern classic metal band.
I was hooked when i heard these guys for the first time...thanks for your review here, wouldn’t have known he’s paying homage to some of the greats.
A phenomenal drummer taken far to soon one of my all time favorite bands
Great video all around. Jimmy's death was a major pushing point for my sobriety. I wanted to be clean and was sick of the same fucking routine everyday. But I needed that final push and his death from the same drugs I was abusing was it. 11 years clean!
That's fuckin wonderful!! Congratulations brother.
If you're interested in more, you should check out "Jimmy The Rev Drumming in Studio "Almost Easy" ". Also check out their album City of Evil, especially the song Blinded in Chains.
They said the only time he fucked up live was when he fainted from all the fog machines.
Rip Jimmy, best drummer ever .he played 7th trumpet one take..he was a way more diverse drummer than people think..
Thank you for your positive message man keep doing what you do r.i.p rev 🤘
I'm new your channel. And I loved this video! Avenged Sevenfold is my fav band. Unfortunately I got into them after the Rev passed away, but he was absolutely a beast at the drums
Welcome!
That was an amazing video. Thank you for the video and psa
Thank you!
Enjoyed this one lots. Currently own a Synyster Gates Custom S, the Rev was the one that got me originally hooked. Miss him. FoREVer.
Those snare hits have a lot of snap. He's really wailing on that snare like it wronged him in a previous incarnation. I do love a snappy snare (t-shirt worthy lol)
React to Matt Greiner from August Burns Red. The best songs I would recommend would be: marianas trench, white washed, internal cannon, or provisions. Or Chris Turner from Oceans Ate Alaska playing Hansha
Just stay tuned
MATT GRIENER AUGUST BURNS RED BRAND NEW TRACK BONES
I know you probably won't see much for this guy, but I would like for you to look into this drummer, his name is Branden Morgan. He is phenomenal. Very technical, very precise. He plays for a band called Misery Signals. I recommend his playthrough of The Shallows because it's only him in the video. He will impress you.
This was uploaded right before my bday. Just so happens sevenfold is my favorite band
Edit: forgot to mention that beast and the harlot is one of my favorite songs by them
Dude.
You are cool as fuck!
And i am a massive A7x fan.
Thankyou for the excellent critique of the beloved jimmy ❤️
I know you've already done Brooks Wackerman with bad religion but his recent work with avenged sevenfold is really inspiring and creative, for exemple on the song "the stage", and they have even some songs that feels like they were written around his drum chops, like "god damn".
Ive been an A7X fan forever, since the city of evil days (2005-06 era) and i genuinely believe, with a heavy heart, the Rev ended his life purposely.. his last song HE personally recorded was Fiction, front to back its a suicide note.. he was so young and i miss what he brought to avenged and the man he was! Love you did this
Im only 23 but one of my heroes was Chris Cornell of SoundGarden. Loved everything he did and was so sad to seem him go. Scott W of STP was another amazing artist taken way too soon.
There are several reasons why The Rev wasn't confronted over his drug use :
A) The rest of the band (and their respective significant others) were largely indulging in the same lifestyle at the time, and they couldn't notice anything out of the ordinary
B) The rest of the band didn't know he'd begun doing opiates, benzos, and other pharmaceuticals in the months leading to his death. They just assumed his drinking had increased (which it had, by the way). Plus, Jimmy had always been a party animal since he was a teenager. Everyone around him has since stated that in retrospect, it wasn't so much that Jimmy was keeping it very well hidden, but that they were never checking for it in the first place. It'd been part of his everyday lifestyle for so long that they didn't notice he was crossing a threshold
C) It most likely wouldn't have made a difference anyways. Jimmy was always so anti-authority that he wouldn't have responded well to a potential intervention. If anything, it almost certainly would've encouraged him to crank it up even higher just to prove a point. He would've tried to demonstrate that they were the ones who were being ridiculous and unreasonable. Jimmy was an eccentric, anti-authority shit head by nature. He couldn't help it. He'd been that way his entire life. If they tried an intervention when he was drinking a liter of vodka, snorting 2 grams of cocaine, and taking 100 mg of Oxycodone a day, he only would've started drinking a gallon of vodka, snorting an eightball of cocaine, and swallowing 150 mg of Oxycodone a day just to prove a point that they should now feel dumb and embarrassed for stepping when they did
Looked it up Huntington Beach is where they are from in 1999. I didn't know them. Good Stuff!!
The drum solo is sick🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
You should definitely check out sone of Alex bent's footage from him playing for trivium. He's a crazy good drummer and does all types of good stuff
Yesss they're good cuz the band is inspired by so many famous bands like Metallica
Live in the LBC. Simply Because it’s the best live show to date IMO and that was back in 2008.
thank you for this dude, honestly just thank you brother
I apologize for that terrible cut at the end of the video. I got put on RUclips jail again. I hope you enjoyed tho!
Thanks for the PSA, brother. Depression and addiction are very real things in todays world. We can argue about the causes, but I'd say the primary one is that young people especially are growing up in a fucked economy and finding a way to feel fulfilled and happy is difficult in a world where we are constantly bombarded by images of wealth and excess through social media and TV. Ultimately I think what matters most is learning to love ourselves. As someone who continues to struggle with severe mental health problems I can attest to how much happier I was when I was in a band and had that comradery with brothers and sisters who love music as much as I do. It's hard to love yourself. I sure as shit haven't mastered it or even come close to it, but what matters is the pursuit of it. I've lost my bands and a lot of my friends because of an abusive ex-girlfriend and then realized how miserable I was at my job too. I've pretty much self isolated for the last 6 years and it's really made it difficult to go back out into the world and be around people without feeling like an alien. Music is the only thing that keeps me grounded outside of my mother and sister. I always tell people that I study politics to help with and communicate to other people, and that music is how I communicate with myself. Maybe a weird combination but just the hope that I can help educate more people around mental health and how it''s attached to politics, voting and the economy goes well with my music which has always been my source of internal rebellion. We all need to take better care of each other and stop making everything in our world so transactional. We need to realize that every single human no matter what had no choice in being born, and because of that we all have an inherent right to a happy and fulfilling life. We get so little time to view and listen to the beauty of this world and we spend too much of that time fighting against each other when our real battle is with the politicians and leaders who fight against every little gain we normal people try to make. We all need to realize we're in this life together and we owe it to one another to take care of each other. I've lost so many good fucking people to suicide and overdose in the last 5 years. I'm so tired of feeling like the world doesn't care about those people or puts some kind of social blame on them for being the way they are instead of asking what's causing the conditions that create and foster addiction and depression. We're all underpaid, overworked, and underappreciated as the backbone of the world. Citizens are left to die in misery just for the sake of a few people getting enormously wealthy. We've got to change that and refocus our economy on providing maximum fulfillment and happiness. Labels shouldn't get to rob artists like they do, they shouldn't get to hide the fact that they feed addictions to keep a musician playing rather than getting that person help. If they do get them help, they send them off to scammy ass resorts that take advantage of addicts for a profit. It's completely fucked that everything in this world boils down to spending money and whether or not you can afford things, and I'm willing to bet good money that's exactly what put Jimmy down his path in the first place. He was a great soul, and it sucks to have lost such a talented and kind person before their time.
Hit me up anytime you need to talk. I'll be doing a livestream soon for that exact purpose
@@JunkdrummerTV Thanks man :) Ill check it out! Much love!
Jimmy was my idol back when I played drums a lot, unfortunately I had to sell my kit when we moved into an apartment. Love the videos as well.
Update, I got an electric kit like a year after I posted this comment. I still love to play along to his stuff. :)
Jimmy's drumming on Almost Easy is insane, you've got to check it out
Huge Avenged Sevenfold fan, id like to throw out a suggestion, Matt Greiner from "August burns Red" when i discovered him i was only 16 and 5 years into my drumming life, the man kills the sets on all of his drum cams, he also does video breakdowns of his songs and is just over all a really great dude, check him out unless you already have and im just typing nonsense
check the drums out on not ready to die. I believe there is a live video of that if not i am sure someone has vacuumed the drum track out
