Aloha and Good Morning! People are leaving some comments about the 🎹Piano Opening🎹 of the track. Yes, I heard it and made mention of it on my first stop but it seemed to clip in my rendering/export of the video. :)
It is a great intro. Thanks for acknowledging it. Also, F that guy! Touch your nose all you want. Be yourself, and just listen and give us your opinion.
@keyofgeebz Jimmy Chamberlin comes from a Jazz and Polka background. He often uses the pedal of the hi hat to keep time with his left foot. If you look up Frank Catalano and Jimmy Chamberlin you will see him with his jazz band. They're so amazing especially when you can catch them live.
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is easily one of the best albums ever recorded. It has a flow from start to finish that just works so well, it has it's slow moments builds to crazy hard metal bits back to lullaby's. *chefs kiss motion*
I always LOVE that I forget about that outro.... It's SO.....beautiful. I love how SP so perfectly combined this sort of slow heavy thick shoegaze distortion....with this dreamy bittersweet....loveliness. Such a cool unique sound.
When I first heard this song, I also noticed the high hat pattern was similar to Sober by Tool. Danny and Jimmy are definitely my favorite drummers from the 90’s.
Probably the best song on the best album of the 90's in my humble opinion. This really is the work of a band at the height of their power. Jimmy Chamberlain is a phenomenal drummer, he can give it power in the more fierce tracks of the album (tales of a scorched earth, an ode to no-one) but he also knows when to reign it in and contribute to the overall sound without overwhelming.
As a musician, I see your reactions, and I can tell you're a pumpkins virgin in a sense. Welcome to the magic that is the poet and brilliant musician that is Billy Corgan.
Get exactly what you mean. And Pumpkins is all about Billy being a true poet, like you said. If one isn't listening to his lyrics very seriously, with the mindset of "this is poetry, not merely song lyrics", one is missing a huge part of Pumpkins magic. I know this is a year later reply... just saw them in Sacramento a few weeks ago, so on a binge. Seeing the 2000 Universal Amphitheater show (after he gave an interview on KTLA that afternoon announcing the original breakup), with 3 encores and Mayonnaise as the final song of the show is one of the greatest privileges of my life.
Such a good song, and so glad you picked this. I'm recommending "Soma" for a future video, a really beautiful, moving composition and performance. As usual, this video here was a good breakdown. The bombastic parts are great, but the laid back parts are what really make this song. The bass is so good. I hope you've got something to help with your pain until surgery.
Very excited to see you do this song. This is one of my all time favorite songs. MCIS is an absolute masterpiece from start to finish. This song is very much about Jimmy on the drums too. He's a beast. The piano sound you can't identify may be a mellotron. Also, I wanted to add that the disks in the set were titled "dawn to dusk", and "twilight to starlight" Both disks start and end with their own atmosphere. If you listen to the ending track of twilight to starlight, you can hear some similarities.
I’m so glad you did this song. This is one of my all time fav pumpkins songs. It’s such an underrated gem. It has this quality that I’m always searching for, and it’s hard to explain. An epicness that inspires my creativity. That makes me want to imagine whole new worlds to weave into my perfect story. I guess I want to be inspired and not a lot of music can do that for me. So when I find one I become obsessed with it. Also I can’t get enough of songs that have that climb to a crescendo, Muse Uprising has it too, just givea me all the feels.

On Dawn to Dusk the expression is content with a slightly mischievious smile, while on Twilight to Starlight the expression is sad, but also adversarial, and the eyes suggest anger beneath the (infinite) sadness. Yeah, likely due to casual and non-fans only hearing the radio songs. Jimmy’s most impressive drums are often on tracks that aren’t played on the radio.

The juxtaposition of absolute face-melting rock and drive to tender and hearth-melting soft songs (and the combination of the two in one song) is one of the most unique and delightful characteristics of Smashing Pumpkins that sets them apart so much for 90's rock in my opinion.

Bought this album when it came out, haven't listen to it for years. Thanks for reminding me how good this song is, always been my favorite song of the album, going onto my playlist so I won't let it go into forgotten history again
I love that you caught the high hat pattern in the intro on your first listen and also made the Tool connection. Cheers! The magical delicacy of Jimmy's drumming over the massive walls of fuzz cannot be overstated. The univibe on the background guitars at the end send everything further into space.
You're absolutely right that the ending alludes to another track on the album. In this case, it's the first track on the album. It's serves as a theme for the entire album.
Yes, it is ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’ in a different arrangement. The full track opens disc 2 of the extended MCIS box set. Also, a variation of the same piano theme can be heard at the need of “Farewell and Goodnight”
The original Smashing Pumpkins ('91-'00) were masterful. Espescially the album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. PLEASE do more songs from that album. Oh, and that was the beautiful blonde D'arcy Wretzky on the bass. Not Billy. Billy goes back and forth between rhythm and lead guitar.
You're reactions are always so amazing. I agree wholeheartedly that this track is very warm sounding and Billy's vocals are definitely further back in the mix. You hit it head on where this was never a single but definitely a hidden gem and one I think true fans really love. It's definitely one of my favorite SP songs of all time. Reminds me of a hidden gem from Soundgarden (Tighter and Tighter). Good luck on the surgery!
So glad you reacted to this song! Also, the bassist is not a guy. It's D'arcy Wretzky. She is a phenomenal bassist. Hope the shoulder heals up soon! More SP please! For Martha or, Behold! The Nightmare.
Definitely my favorite Pumpkins track. The drums, bass, and guitar on this track are amazing. So many different sounds. Pure Rock Symphony. My favorite ending to any song of all time. Love hearing you talking about the "washiness" of the guitar and explaining how Billy being pulled back let's us enjoy the music even more, because I always thought this was the "perfect mix" of Billy and the rest of the band. "Youth is wasted on the young"
It's so uncanny that you decided to analyse this song, because I've been listening to it a lot recently having not listened to it in a long time! Always been one of my favourite Pumpkins songs, always loved the power and dynamism of it. Anyway, loving your work bro, keep it up!
Such an amazing song, triggers ASMR every time for me. I know I already commented on the last Pumpkins vid but Untitled is such an amazing track with an epic guitar solo.
Good luck with your rotator cuff, my friend. It sounds like the recovery will be difficult, but I can see that you're in a lot of pain, so I'm glad you're getting it checked out. May you have courage and patience as your body heals. Aloha!
Awesome video as always. I just had to pause for a second to say this has been my favorite SP song since it came out, and I personally believe it's the absolute pinnacle of their catalog. It's the perfect, shining example of who and what the band is all about, and if I needed to introduce someone to the band with one song, this would be it. It just perfectly encapsulates every element of the Pumpkins sound in one brilliant package. And still to this day, it remains one of the most beautiful and emotional songs I've ever experienced.
Its true, smashing pumpkins made songs that the voice serves more like an instrument beside the others, making the climate. Thank you for showing this!
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was the very first CD I ever bought. I spent so much time in my room blasting this album while doing whatever. I had always dealt with severe depression and anxiety. This album really engulfed me as a young teen. I don't like who Corgan is now but he definitely influenced me. Killer track. This album is definitely a journey. You doing alright? You paused for several seconds in the middle there and you looked as if you were contemplating or even mourning. My right shoulder is completely torn apart as well so I feel ya on that. Take it easy my dude.
I like your "envelope" explaination; That's how I feel it, the sound is all around me, with the difernt instruments conversing from one corner of the room to the other. SmashingPumpkins could put me on a trance back in the day!
So I discovered the channel, I subscribed, and checked your uploads and opened about 20 new tabs. But I have to start with this one. I know how I feel about the Mellon Collie era Pumpkins. Obviously I'm a commenter not a Patreon yet, but I would definitely love to hear your opinions on the Pisces Iscariot album which is songs that never made the Siamese Dream album. Songs like Frail and Bedazzled, or Starla.
Flood & Alan Moulder produced the album. For that heavy muted guitar sound I've heard Billy say it was Flood who said crank up the amps & face them close to the walls. Nice to hear you give props to the GREAT Jimmy Chamberlin on drum. He's played on all their classic tunes.....SP is essentially Billy & Jimmy, at its creative core. They are actually making a sequel to this album at the moment.
Great comment about the “tie-in” at the end. MCIS has a few moments like that where songs cross reference each other and help to bind the concept of the album together. The acoustic guitar at the end is the same as the one in Farewell and Goodnight, which in turn has a melody that reflects the opening MCIS piece.
I hate so see you in pain every video I watch but I know that's a part of getting old 🙃 I'm glad you are getting the shoulder looked at and hopefully fixed soon. Know there are always thoughts and prayers going out to you. Thanks for the great content you provide for all the pure (and dirty) listeners out there!
I can tell you exactly where i was when i first heard that ‘double album’!! It was a thing of beauty. Was revising with my girlfriend at the time, got the record from a mate and played it... well no revising after that! I played it so many times, what a fantastic record this was and still is- up tempo and very soft there is so much in it. And there is D’arcy on the bass!! Not the same when she left!! It brought me back to that revision table, thanks Geebz!! Aloha🤙🏻
You were right about the bit at the end! It's an acoustic simplified version of the the 1st song of the album which is the title track "Mellon Collie ..." which is a piano/melletron instrumental track. The album is split into day and night (this is from the night) and it's a little nod that the last section (quarter of the album) is coming. I didn't know that till I saw it in an interview.
Thanks for all you amazing run downs of these infinite dimensions of spacetime we call songs. This is definitely a goto, I have you on all notify. Thanks man, eyb
What is great about the production of this song is how at the end it gets so simple and in your face after that big epic sound. The whole song has so many parts that are different but each part flows so well into the next and seems to contribute to the whole. Great great song.
I saw these guys live during their Infinite Sadness tour, and at the time this wasn't one of my favorite songs of theirs, but it was absolutely the pinnacle of the concert for me. It was so powerful!
Awesome reaction! got so excited when I saw this notification! one thing I did not hear discussed is how the upper gutitar arrangement on the chorus of the song follows a similar phrase as billys vocal melody a few beats after. I remember hearing that as a teen and wonder why every song didn't have that in it. :D and yes the very last part of the song is sort of a variation reprise of the 1st song on the record "mellon collie and the infinite sadness" . the last track on the album is "farewell and goodnight" which sort of also has one of these reprises on the outro too. other smashing pumpkins songs to react to: Blank Page, Hummer (hummer is another song that a lot of big smashing pumpkins fans consider to be their best song), soma ( the thru eyes of ruby-ish song on Siamese dream ), porcilina and the vast oceans, and tonight tonight for the reaction on the string arrangements.
This is one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands. I started playing because of the Smashing Pumpkins. Mentioning "Release Me" by Pearl Jam was the cherry on top. Probably the top moment on Ten IMO.
Despite this being a double album already. It spawned multiple singles that they released in a boxset called The Aeroplane Flies High. Loaded with b-sides. Billy Corgan said at one point he had roughly 100 songs to pull from for the album. Probably SPs most creative time musically.
My mom bought me the Aeroplane box set for my birthday the year it came out. Amazed me in ways I can't explain. And the 26 minute track "Pistachio Medley" just showcases how diversely talented the band was!

Jimmy is such a great fucken drummer!
*LOVE* this era of the Pumpkins.. thanks for doing it Geebz!
Best Pumpkins song! I was wondering if others love this shit since 1995 as much as me
I love that you caught the high hat pattern in the intro on your first listen and also made the Tool connection.
@George Lucas Should be top comment. Came here to say the same.
In hindsight it was probably Billy.
Try from '88 to '21 and beyond mate
The pumpkins at the top of their game, miss the 90s man. Thank you Geebz!🤙
This is a bucket list album. You need to listen to the entire thing.
one of the best Smashing songs
How are you so cool? You're the greatest guy on YT. I mean that.
Gorgeous track. Thanks for covering it
My favorite song on this album. Great choice and great work as always.
So glad you reacted to this song! Also, the bassist is not a guy. It's D'arcy Wretzky. She is a phenomenal bassist. Hope the shoulder heals up soon! More SP please! For Martha or, Behold! The Nightmare.
This is a great double album. Lots of experimental songs and they pulled it off very well!
Aloha!
I've stood in a record bar , tears streaming down my face listening to this (completely stoned )
This is my favorite SP song. I was really excited to see this pop up on my feed
I forgot to give you an upvote when this went live, woops! This album is GOATed
Aaaah Im so excited to see a reaction video for this song. Haven't watched video yet, know you'll be smiling.
With James it seems.
@@Wall-ID James Iha back in the band- and played on their last two albums.. Which all SP fans wanted. D'Arcy, alas, went a bit nutso.
I forgot alllll about the sequel. I remember it being disappointing to me, but maybe I'll give it another try.
Just saw the album that came out last year wasn't the sequel, so I'm stoked to see what it sounds like.
@@Uglybuttfiend Adore was the follow-up. No Jimmy. Its so-so.....in mood. What they're recording now is a genuine sequel to MCIS..
This is a Great song! Im frankly amazed this hasn't gotten more reactions, or the band more traction or maybe even a hall of fame nomination yet
Epic song. Epic album.
The end is the beginning is the end. The beginning is the end is the beginning. Infinite Sadness, get it? Now try getting rid of it.
Great analysis, bud! I adore this song, and you're right: it has such warm and inviting tones.
Good luck with that rotator cuff surgery.
Thanks for this. I’d forgotten how much I loved this song.
Nice breakdown 👍🏽
Glad you liked it!
A good word I find for this song is "immersive."
It envelopes you in every sound/instrument, and even the meaning of the song.
Arguably (with myself) my favorite pumpkins tune..also, best album art ever!!
Love this entire album. Gotta listen to it from start to finish.
That little bit at the end is a tie-in to the beginning piano intro of disc one. Thanks for doing this one!!
Amazing takeaway from this beautiful song. Great vid.
