  • In this video I am joined by Eric Bassett who transformed his putting by changing to a side saddle method. Eric would commonly shot between 38-40 putts a round and dropped to 32 putts per round. Eric explains the putter, the grip, set up and stroke required to switch to the side saddle method. We made this video together on a coaching trip that he attended with me in Fuerteventura. If you have any questions about the method and wanted to get in touch with Eric simply message me at julian@propergolfing.com and I will put you in touch.
Thank you Eric for agreeing to share your golfing story with us all.

As a PGA Professional for over 30 years and golfing since I was 10, I recently switched to this method of putting. It simply works. I teach so many students and when demonstrating how to chip, I toss the ball towards the hole. I seem to make about 50% doing this. One of my students said "why don't you putt that way?" My response was "I don't know." So I switched. I now make many more putts from 20 to 30 feet, and almost automatic from 6 to 10 feet.

    Nice video.
Myself I'm into my third year of putting side saddle.
After what I describe as a "military-grade case of yips," that was so bad I could miss the hole by 10 foot either side, I spent two years trying literally everything. ... Longer putters, shorter putters, heavier putters, anchored (before it was illegal), wrist-lock grips, prayer grips, even a couple of arm-lock putters - and I could still yip anything.
So over the winter a little over three years ago I ran across and article about a very successful amateur Randy Haag (his video below), and his side saddle method he'd been using for 25 years. ... So that winter I purchased some used broomstick/long putters off eBay (I didn't want to get too invested in case it too was an utter failure), and after practicing over the winter and getting comfortable enough with it that I took it to the course - and it was the first round I'd played in years in which I didn't yip a putt.
As Mr. Haag said, it takes about a year to get used to it, so you have to be patient (like golfers are known for being patient - LOL) - but I stuck with it, improved over the course of that summer, and my last putt of the season was a 60 footer, up hill, with a huge break, and it fell in the cup.
Last year I custom ordered a LAB Golf putter - finally was able to have one at 79.5-degrees, and during the course of the season I averaged 28.57 putts per round for the year - and now this year I've noticed that even my lag putting has turned all but deadly. ... Can't say that there's any reason to go back to anything else.

Been 'face-on/side-saddle' putting for 2+ yrs now - no turning back - it's a game changer! Went from an 'C grade' std. (traditional style) to an 'A-'. My greatest enemy putting tradionally/side-on was head movement - I literally used to follow the putter-head back & through with my head - terrible - caused me no end of misses and problems for yrs.
I tried a number of putters and settled on a 38" TM spider (counter balance grip) set to a lie angle of 75 degs. Use Sam Snead's style (feet together with slightly bent knees). When people make faces on the green at the sight of it, I tell them they'd find it much more comical watching me miss 2 footers traditional/side-on style. Funny thing is, after watching how well it rolls the ball and how accurate it is, they often have a go themselves after the round :-)

Interesting way to putt and makes a lot of sense, I've been doing this on and off the last few years, short putts are a doddle but longer lag putts need practice. Not easy to find good side saddle putters in the UK but putters like the odyssey backstryke can easily be converted with a shaft extension, split grip and aralditing some lead weight to the sole of the putter. The lie angle can be bent fairly easily to be more upright just under 80 degrees.

I do this with the ball outside my left foot, feet together, lefty golfer, while directly facing the hole & using only my left arm. I lag putt really well this way but 10' & closer, not so much. I’ve been putting sidesaddle for close to ten years. I use it primarily for short putts with a very short backstroke to keep the club face square to the ball. Sam had just won another golf tournament and was on his way home with his wife.
A police officer pulled him over and approached his car.
Sam rolled down the window and asked the officer what was his problem.
The officer was taken back once he realized who the driver was.
Officer: “Oh, hello Mr Sneed, I noticed that you weren’t wearing your seat belt.
But you did put it on when you saw me.”
Sam: “No that’s not true! I have been wearing it all along!”

Golf has been around since 15th Century. Back then in Scotland they just carved out a piece of wood in the same shape as an iron with a long flat face and called it a putting cleet. These days you have different shapes and materials but it's still a putting cleet. It's traditional but doesn't mean the best way. Perhaps if the same money, research and development with a stretch of creative imagination went into the original putters design, we'd get to it's logical conclusion that facing the hole and using one arm is the superior stroke. I've been face on putting for a few years. Take practice to find your best stroke but there is just so much less to go wrong.

The best method of side-saddle putting was described in the book, "Seven Days in Utopia". You faced the hole and using a putter that went all the way up to your shoulder, you would hold it so that the shaft was aligned with your right arm. The left hand held the top of the putter while your right arm/hand applied the hit. It's the natural way to roll a ball with the proper tool. I'd love to try it and stop trying to force golfers into some USGA stuffed shirt's idea of "golf".

The L2 is a nice putter. Also, the L2 has a 3 or 4 degree loft on its face which precludes the option of holding it vertical. @JulianMellor  2 года назад +1

To do it correctly a normal putter isn’t long enough and the lie angle of the putter will be too flat. I tried it with a normal putter and it just didn’t work.

Isn't his putting motion illegal because the lead upper arm (left in his case) is anchored against his body. Similar to latest rules of broomstick putting

@@realSS00 No, my lead arm is not anchored against my chest. It's a good inch or two away from it. The "loose fitting" blue pullover I'm wearing may give the optical illusion of an anchor because when I bend forward slightly the material of the pullover may end up touching my forearm.

I wish the demonstrator would remove the baggy wind jacket. Then we could see if he is anchoring his left forearm against his left midsection. I use a long putter and found a way to do it successfully without anchoring or creating a pinned fulcrum. I think this strike is questionable.

Eric is very Knowledgeable about side saddle putting and I’m sure he can answer your question, I wouldn’t bet against him hoping more putts than most people that play

I can 100% assure you my left forearm is not pinned against my left midsection. And my guess is that removing my baggy wind jacket wouldn't make that more visible. Since there's an inch or less between my arm and my body - I think the only way you'd see that is from a camera view above my arms.

So if this method is really better, why don't we see anyone on any tour playing it?

Depends on which tour player you are watching

Probably because they were never exposed to this putting option as a child when they were first learning the game. And then after literally practicing hundreds of thousands of strokes with a traditional putting style AND becoming very proficient with that traditional putting style as a result (otherwise they would've never made it to the tour!) why would they want to change something that works for them? But for any amateurs who struggle with their putting why wouldn't they want to give this alternative putting style a shot? Btw, Sam Snead putted sidesaddle towards the end of his career when he really struggled with his putter. Top U.S. amateur Randy Haag used the Sidesaddle style to win a number of club and national amateur championships. His sidesaddle putting prowess became famous after a Wall Street Journal article on it in 2012 (that's where I first became aware of this putting style). Dave Peltz, the putt guru, says the best putter he has EVER measured was a guy who showed up to his lab one day and putted sidesaddle. www.wsj.com/articles/SB10000872396390444868204578066733271412100

Definitely not knocking the idea as putting is so individual. I think for many of us though a similar effect could be achieved with an exaggerated open putting stance maintaining your follow through.
