  • In this video, I talk about how to play a short-sided bunker shot. It’s really important that you set up to the shot correctly and understand how to open the clubface to create the loft, where to position the ball, and where to align your body so that the swinging technique becomes really simple. Once you are set up the right way, it’s simply a matter of using gravity, i.e., what goes up must come down. Using your wrists correctly, swinging the club on the right path, and releasing it at impact will guarantee you success at these shots. Remember, the shots need a lot of practice, so once you’ve got the technique right, go and practice the shots as often as possible so that you become 100% confident when faced with a short-sided bunker shot.

    Excellent demonstration Julian on hitting a short sided bunker shot! This is one of the best recommendations and demonstrations that I have seen! I am going to archive this for future reference! Good Job Julian!

    Greetings from Canada. Thanks for the great video Julian. I could not figure out what I was doing wrong until you called it. My swing was flat and I was blading it every time. As soon as I made it a more veritcal swing, hinging my wrists and letting gravity do the rest, I just got back from the pactice facility and went through an entire bucket of balls, landed almost every ball on the green and was even able to play around with the height of the shot. THANK YOU! Dan.

    Geary Player always said a sand shot should be like “striking a match”; you must accelerate across the surface (sand) for the match to light.

    I used this yesterday. It worked very well, just have to remember to follow through with some speed.

    Excellent ,very clear, easy to follow advice which I follow.
    If there is very little sand in the bunker I use my Alien lob wedge which can be used in hard, dry bunkers.
    Julian's advice is great for bunkers with sufficient sand .

      Thanks Alan, really difficult to play this shot with little sand under the ball, you’d have to use a special club for sure

    Thanks Julian, another interesting video, but contrary to your earlier video where you said not to open the club face and stand square to target… PS: which club did you use in this video?

    • @JulianMellor
      @JulianMellor  2 года назад +1

      Hi Paul,
      Because this is a specialist shot it requires a specialist set up and action. The swing technique is no different it’s just a change of club face and body position. The club I use is a 60° but by the time I’m hitting the golf ball it’s around 80° of loft which is required to play a high soft shot that stops very quickly.

    Another good bit of information.....got any ideas on how to keep wrist set in full swing from causing the club face to open so much that it ends up pointing right (right handier) at impact and a perfect straight shot 10, 20 yards right of target? Even in the single plane swing I get this too often...

    our course bunkers have a thin layer of sand over a hard base. Club bounces ?

      I do say that you need a good lie. Not possible to play off hard lie

  • @richardc6932
    @richardc6932 2 года назад

    Julian, I am confused regarding the open position of your feet and club face. As a previous question from another golfer, this is contrary to the previous video where you recommend a stance parallel to target line and a normal neutral club face position. Are you suggesting different techniques for different types of bunkers?

    • @JulianMellor
      @JulianMellor  2 года назад

      This is the same swing technique but because you have to increase the loft of your club it points to the right if you are right handed, so you have to turn your body to the left so that it points back at target. The swing is then simply up and down following your body line. I only ever use this technique when I have to play a high short shot.

    So different from a previous video on sand play

    • @JulianMellor
      @JulianMellor  2 года назад

      Technique is the same but the set up is totally different which is required to play this specialist shot, Jack
