    If your vote didn’t matter lobbyists wouldn’t spend billions trying to influence it, politicians wouldn’t try to gerrymander and suppress it, and corporations wouldn’t try to buy it.
    YOUR VOTE MATTERS. VOTE.

    • @captainxcast
      @captainxcast 6 лет назад +281

      AsiniusNaso that’s precisely the reason WHY votes don’t matter. Lobbyists and corporations run this country and almost every elected official will act in THEIR interests, not ours. As far as influencers go, even they are owned by corporations. They control the framing and the narrative.

    • @RJLiams
      @RJLiams 6 лет назад +101

      Or that's exactly why it doesn't matter. Politicians are in bed with lobbyist. They have control over the rules when it comes to voting. When the Democrats were found to have robbed the nomination it showed no matter how strong the opposition they have the power to get what they want.
      Also I live in a red state, in a red county, in a red town. Independents make up not even 10% of the population. We are outnumbered by even democrats. So please tell me how my vote matters when even if every single Independent voted we'd still be out voted.

    I really try to be open minded but voting is a privilege that so many people in the world don’t have. As both a POC and a woman my predecessors had to fight for their rights to be able to vote in this country and I’m not going to forfeit that right just because the country hasn’t been moving in the direction I want it to. That seems like the equivalent of throwing a tantrum when things don’t go your way.

      Lilium. Rights are inherent and irrevocable. In my state (Florida) along with I think 3 others felons lose their ability to vote so technically voting can be defined as a privilege here. When I spoke about women and POC fighting for the “right” to vote I used the word right because that’s how it was afforded to us in the Constitution.

    • @LiliumPetal
      @LiliumPetal 6 лет назад +11

      Yasmine Ameena The Constitution mentions "the right to vote" five times. Thus I believe it should be an irrevocable right afforded to all citizens of this country as well as permanent immigrants. The Supreme Court has consistently ruled that voting is in fact a privilege, but that does not mean I have to agree with their decision, although it does mean that I must abide by it lawfully speaking.

      When one person doesn't vote it doesn't matter. But whatever made that one person vote likely is also the cause of another persons actions. The thought that's you dont matter, that you're one, well surely many people - to be reasonable all rational people - know that. However, that's a thought because of which people dont vote. That's a popular, probably universal thought, everyone knows they dont really matter (well most people) and when everyone thinks so nobody votes. And then even a single person voting matters.

    I originally come from Switzerland, now live in the UK. Swiss citizens are asked to vote on any topic (could be immigration reform or adding an extra week of holiday) 4 times a year, and we have 11 parties represented in parliament. Any citizen can create a new law that, if it gathers enough signatures, will be put to the vote. Coming from that background, I believe in voting 100% percent. I am extremely proud of this system, which gives a voice to every single one of us on any piece of legislation.
    However, I do understand the disillusion Americans and British people can feel with their voting system. Both systems are similar in the sense that your vote will only count in either your state or constituency, and there are only two parties that really matter. The American parties baffle me by how wide their ideological range is. I think it is time to split both parties. Have Trump and friends create a new far right party, and Bernie, Warren and others create a socialist party. And some high profile Democrats could join the Greens as well to raise their profile a bit. This would help people vote for parties that are closer to their beliefs. But for this to work, BOTH parties have to do it, or we'll end up with the same problem as in the UK, where the left is fragmented into a few smaller parties, but not the right, which seems to gives it a bit of an advantage. And that's not democracy either.

Not the politicians or the power hungry assholes in power. What makes America great is the people: the immigrants, the minorities, the Indigenous! The overall culture and diversity that we have in this country may not be perfect, but it is growing and it is the best. I’m proud to be an American FOR and BY the people. Voting doesn’t make sense in a two party system. People aren’t voting for who they want to win, but against who they want to lose. If both parties want to marginalize me, why on earth would I pick one of them to represent me and my interests? Yet, when I pick someone who does represent my interests, I’ve wasted my vote - because of me the one that we don’t want most will win.
    Gerrymandering also effectively makes your vote matter less. Not to mention that the electoral college delegates can ignore who their constituents want.
    I vote in local elections if a candidate will help people, otherwise that doesn’t have a point either.

      @@neurofiedyamato8763 I agree it would be refreshing to see a third party gain majority vote. But my point is that the two-party system came to be because of the choice of the people. Not by law. This is why voting in your local community is equally important as participating in presidential elections. Many people don't even know who their representatives in congress are, even though they vote in the electoral college, and are responsible for legislating. So simply saying that their votes don't matter because they didn't like either candidates isn't really a good argument if you don't even participate in your immediate communities

      Does no one get the point of the third party? It has had a significant impact in America since our government is based on majority votes not who has the most. The third party can prevent one of the two parties from gaining a majority when it is neck and neck. This forces the two parties to adopt and discuss the concerns of the third party. It has been a while since I was in government, but it seems people don't understand what makes our voting system great. It's not a true democracy as many of our founding fathers were against, but a republic.

      You think AAs got their rights via protests? No, AAs got their rights because the protests alarmed the average voter and the news and politicians who weren't convinced it was the right thing to do were confronted with being on the wrong side of history and not being re-elected. Why do you think these things happened to be more effective when the TV cameras weren't around? Remember Occupy Wall street? How many of their demands do you think were enacted? You know why? Because the average assumed protestor eventually thought they were misguided and politicians saw that. Every time an unarmed black kid is killed by a cop there is a march and a protest. How many laws have been enacted or passed to prevent that? You know why? Because other than something to see, those protests don't touch what they see as the average voter therefore they are ignored.

    I loved the whole "if you vote independent or don't vote Trump will win!" my first reaction is that either way I'll be unhappy because regardless of what happens I didn't get what I want.... which was neither of them.
    Side note I feel like the nonvoters had better explanations as to WHY they didn't/don't vote, they felt more collected as if they've truly thought it through and I honestly agree with them. To brake a point down simply we all acknowledge that the system is broken or doesn't represent us the way it should yet you continue to use it. That is the equivalency of trying to fill a shattered glass cup with water, it's not going to work just because you hope it will.
    Change does need to start at the bottom and perhaps the outcome is not the none voters fault but the people who DID vote for Hillary or Trump. Those of us who where neutral probably felt like there was no hope because those 2 where being so heavily pushed mainstream, independents don't have as much coverage or awareness in the masses and I think only those that where actively in politics would be aware of the independent candidates that they wanted. Also that the neutrals would had to of come to and agreement on which independent in order to of had the slightest chance of comparing to the 2 main candidates. You had the option of 3rd parties too but you guys limited yourselves to those 2.
    People tend to go to whatever is heavily marketed because they don't have to do in-depth research, don't try to shame others because they didn't agree with you on Trump or Hillary. If you truly support the ideals of democracy and your right to vote than you'd take more care in who you vote for... that candidate will have the power to change the country and represent us. The least you can do if you're going to vote is be informed and choose the best candidate because they are RIGHT for the job not because you know their name. So really the results boil down to ignorance and peoples lack of diligence in politics.

When you have to chose between going against one thing you feel strongly about to support another topic or law. The two party system and American government only works in favor for the powerful and rich influences at the top. Voting only supports those people and justifies their actions. However, the notion that the mere presence of political parties means that there is some invisible systematic oppression of the people doesn't really hold any weight simply because I son't see a shred of evidence that supports that claim. Like sure, sometimes the candidate you want doesn't make the cut but it's unfortunately just a part of the system. I don't understand how political parties have any correlation to this "oppression" that you're referencing. If someone is dissatisfied with both candidates, then that person needs to compromise and pick the candidate that they think will do the best job. What they don't need to do is "not vote because their upset that the person they thought was best didn't get selected". Doing something is better than doing nothing because frankly sitting voting out because you're angry is irresponsible and doesn't bring any real change. By not voting, you're not even trying.

    As a person living in a democracy that is very young when compared to the U.S, all i can say is do not take what you have for granted. VOTE!!!! Mankind does not have a better alternative system that benefits majority of society. The general public in any democracy will always lean towards policies that better themselves and so the more people get involved, the better. The one way corporations and deep pocket people win, is when you chose to sit back and not make attempts to better your own life......much love from Nairobi

    I agree with the non-voters. There was no such thing as the electoral college for our vote would maybe matter. The fact that votes can be corrupted it should show that the votes don’t matter if the ones who started it with intention can change/corrupt the votes.

      There isn't a line and there doesn't have to be. You don't have to listen to anything you don't like. Why did you even come to a video where you know the sole purpose is two groups of people offering different opinions? If you can't handle the fact people disagree on subject matters you shouldn't have clicked.
