When it comes to interiors, stylist and creative consultant Betsy Smith is celebrated for her excellent command of colour. In particular, her skills lie in pairing contrasting hues to create surprisingly pleasing palettes. Betsy’s own home, a 1970s house in Peckham, south-east London, features many shades, from the bold red of her Weiner chairs to the olive green of her walls. Naturally, then, colour made the cut - in more ways than one - when we asked her to select her Seven Wonders.

So many take-aways from this: the paint inside the window recess, the grid display wall, taking dark paint beyond the corner to make the edge of the room disappear, the clever sliding doors behind the sink. The bedroom mirror is beautiful.
Great to see social housing transformed into an inspiring home.
So many lessons learned, this is someone who meditates design, and believes in the magic of color. I love her!

Thank you for your kind comments - the rug is from The Conran Shop, but over 15 years old now. Check out their website though as they have some lovely designs from a company call rrres studio that have a similar aesthetic. X

Thank you - I made the unit (with a bit of help from my Dad) mainly because I wanted it to fit the whole width of the room and needed to build in situ as nothing fits up my stairs! The sliding doors are just a painted finish.

The red chairs are call 'Czech' and the brand is Wiener GTV designs. Twenty Twenty One have them on their website. Hope this helps.

Yeah at this point this kind of house should just be seen as a kind of traditional modern style. It’s been done so much it doesn’t really warrant being showcased on here in my opinion, it’s just the typical style of a modern designer with a lot of money and a liking for quirky and abstract
