I will show you how to acid etch metal using some cheap tools and some more expensive ones like a vinyl cutter to make some perfect etches. This is a long video but it is packed with info and it has some skip points if you want to skip some stuff I'm going over.

Pro tip for applying crazy fine detailed vinyl: don't weed it right away. Mask the whole thing, apply it, then weed it on the substrate. With both the positive and negative parts stuck firmly to the substrate it's easier to pull out the negative without disturbing the positive by accidentally lifting parts off you don't want on the wax paper backing.
This is GENIUS!
Electrolysis is also a great option that can be done pretty cheaply with great results and can even do shading and gradients. Enamel spraypaint makes a good resist as well.
I have been using cheapo Staples Glossy photo papers for years ironed on.. Ferric chloride
for brass and copper, ferric nitrate for silver. Use a small tub with aquarium pump with aerator hose gives a nice texture piece face down. Am always amazed at the detail I can get. Scotch bright on medal before iron.

Thanks. So it's kind of odd how long videos work on my end. They are easier and faster for me to edit but people watch them a lot less. Short videos take like 2 to 4 times as long to make but people watch more of the video.😅
As a fellow content creator, I really appreciate all that you’re doing. I know how cumbersome it can be at times to set up cameras, edit, etc. but you still manage to make your videos so relaxing yet extremely informative!
Hot acid dramatically decreases the time needed to etch, but it also dramatically reduced the time you have to remove any splashed acid from your skin before real harm is done. With most acids at room temperature you get a comfortable margin of safety to flush the affected area before any real harm is done. Hot acid immediately starts breaking down tissues, as soon as you are splashed real damage is done.
Its kind of like you CAN drive 120+mph down a road to get somewhere faster, and you may even get there without anything bad happening, but that doesn't make it worth it.
Use room temperature acid and work on another project while it etches or use a bubbler, don't heat your acid unless you are in a lab setting, have proper ppe, an eye wash station, a quick way to neutralize the splashes that will inevitably happen, and have gone through lab safety so many times you could recite the text book.
Also, excellent video. I've been using nitric acid (typically sold as Silver Etching Mordant - mordant in this case being nitric acid pre-diluted in water, as the pure stuff is disfiguring even in a minor accident.)
I think like I'd like to give ferric nitrate a try instead -- Nitric acid (40-60%) is rated as a 3 (extreme danger) on the danger scale on the SDS, where as ferric nitrate is rated at a 1 (slightly hazardous.)
Love the idea of a detail explanation in a longer video, for those wanting more. I do though like the shorter one, as I’m always interested in new tips & techniques, using multiple media’s; so shorter ones “initially” give me ability to view more topics.

My jewelry teacher said Sharpie changed their formula and it doesn't work well anymore. She also said it's better to use to use a high-carbon laser printer, whatever that means.
Press 'n Peel had just come out when I was in college.
Everyone else in class was drawing their boards with a resist marker and I did mine with the Press 'n Peel. Even put my name and the name of the class on the board.
I got a 100% on that project.

A cheap laminator makes it really foolproof and easy to get the toner to stick to the metal. I use that for making double sided circuit boards and it works perfectly probably 95% of the time.
Excellent survey of a variety of methods; wish I had seen this a few years ago. A thermal tshirt press works well for toner transfer, and there is other glossy paper out there that works well.

I've been looking for something like this for a while since I come from more of an intaglio printmaking background and want to get into metalworking for jewelry. I'm so excited to try this. I think that posca markers might be a good alternative for sharpie - that's a pretty popular resist for a few hand-drawn printmaking processes. With the hand-drawn techniques I think you could probably make interesting effects using a pointed metal stylus as if you were doing etching for printmaking on sheet metal plates. This is so fun thank you so much for this
Yeah I know sharpie is no the best think in the world for this but I just wanted people to see that had options 😊 I wanted to used other paint pens but the items needed and the cost of this video was really getting up there so I had to stop at some point haha.
That being said I will have to check out the markers that you are talking about in the future.

A bit more complicated, but if not using a vinyl cutter (I use cricut maker) and needing finer details, I'd be inclined to use a UV resist. For the artwork print to PCB artwork film, check for pinholes and touch up if needed. That step is then done for however many uses you need. Chemically clean the metal to ensure no contaminants (water droplet test), apply UV sensitive film to metal or some other way of coating the metal with resist, sandwich artwork to metal with glass to avoid shadowing and expose with a UV flood light for a couple of minutes or so. Develop the metal to strip the resist that wasn't exposed. Etch. For PCB's I always used sodium persulfate (fine etch crystals), which works great for copper, gives no mess and the etchant remains clear, and should work for brass and some others but not aluminium.

Add hydrogen peroxide to the acid for very very fast results. You can even just use concentrated pickling vinegar rather that hydrochloric acid or ferric Nitride/Chloride. The vinegar and peroxide is good for etching steel.

You can actually print onto a sheet of overhead projector acetate with a laser printer. It's a thin, clear plastic. You then put a piece of plain paper on top and iron the design on.

@@GomeowCreations It was one of the techniques I used when doing my degree in silversmithing. It works well, but does usually need some touch ups with a marker. The decal way definitely gives the best coverage. And a heated bath cuts your time down to about 10 - 20 minutes for a deep etch.

I’ve etched on brass using ink & stamp. Then etched with salt & my rectifier at low voltage.
Nail polish works well i use it on my metal when etching
Instead of using Sharpies as a resist, use paint pens from art supply stores.

Great video with tons of info! I am trying to make a brass casing for a guitar pickup and need to make a logo on it. I will be doing lots of these and was wondering if I could simply have the vynil decals made at a sticker shop and use those as the resist? I'm assuming yes. Seems like a great way to streamline the process

Awesome info video! I etch a lot and I use toner too. The bubbler with low heat works fast and clean with ferric nitrate. Also, don't toss the used FN, even though a lot of people say it only works about 6 hours. Store it in a large glass jar and seal the lid with electrical tape and wrap the jar in towels or cloth to keep it away from light and depending on how often you etch, it will last so far for me, a year and a half. I etch a lot of pieces every 4 to 6 months. Each time it takes only an extra 10 minutes or so unless I add a small amount of FN to it. A big money saver for you I hope. I really enjoy the long videos with all the options. I'm now experimenting with steel etching with salt water for texture plates. We'll see how it goes. Lol...thank you so much! 😊
Any pro tips for the toner engraving?
@@sac7404 I don't do a lot of engraving but plan to learn. If you're interested in an effective way to apply an image to metal, I highly recommend using PCB toner transfer paper. It works great for me consistently. Just be careful not to let the transfer paper move at all during the transfer or it will smudge. I use a hot plate turned on low and rub the image carefully with something flat like a popsicle stick. After you've tried it a few times on small images for practice, you'll master it. I hope this helps. Good luck with your projects!

There is another RUclips video that uses “Glossy Laser Printer Paper” (I purchased some from an office supply locally and it’s 52# paper) to put the design on instead of glossy magazine that I tried with unacceptable results. I did however experience your problem using an iron as the heat source (will try heat gun). Also in that video the transfer of toner was done using a mixture of ethanol and acetone which seemed to work well for him other than leaving behind some of the paper’s fiber on the toner transferred only.
I can help you with one item. Turn off auto focus and use a smaller camera shutter diameter of like f8. More stays in focus and it won't bounce around like yours (and 90% of youtubers) who leave on autofocus.
This video is about 2 years old now and I have changed up a lot of how I shoot my videos. I still use autofocus, if I lock it in place then if I move in closer everything will be out of focus. I have just got better at staying in the frame and keeping an eye on the display make sure that I'm in focus and I just edit everything else out.
Could use one of these methods to apply a mark on the blade of some folding knife build projects. Already use muratic acid for Damasteel Damascus hi/lo etching.
From what I know, you might want to look into salt water etching for steal. I think the vinyl would be your best bet and it looks the most professional 😊👍

seriously cool video i have secretly wanting a machine to do stickers and designs etc, watched vid on etching boom, boom , months later you are there i watch some art dyi jewelry stuff and watch this my main objective is you mentioned heat transfers, i am curious does this do the design on the special paper, reason is i have hat machine that heats the hat allowing a iron on patch as well as a few 20x20 iron presses for clothing, but send the art out to have done, if it could or i could learn how to do it myself win win situation, again thanks for great video

Really great video, thank you for the time you put into this! Based on this video, I decided to go the vinyl cutter route but chose the Cricut Joy since it's small. For small cuts, it wasn't accurate. Then decided to try a 5.5w diode laser on a Sainsmart 3018 prover to ablate matte black paint off brass in preparation for acid etching but couldn't get it to have really crisp lines. I'm now thinking of going back to the vinyl cutter option but perhaps a Portrait 3. My designs are very small (filigree within a 1cm diameter). All this time down the line, what would you suggest? PS. I really dislike the photoetching option. Many thanks in advance! Gunter

do you use ferric nitrate to etch silver, right? I just watched a video tutorial where this woman was etching silver in ferric nitrate hanging the piece with a wood stick and thread on a jar. It came out great, but others were saying that they tried it, and the silver was full of stripes.
Would you do a video on how to etch silver? do you recommend using the tape laying it flat like you did using the other acid and the brass?
Yes you do use ferric nitrate on silver for etching. I can make a video doing that to something in the future. So if you hand it it will state to get lines due to how the acid works on the metal and that is why I have mind flat on in the acid so when it is etching the parts of it fall straight down and don't leave lines.
You don't need the mat when cutting vinyl - it already has a backing sheet, just don't cut too deep. The mat is used for paper and other products that don't have a backing. Take the clear protector off when using paper - it's sticky 😁
where did you get the metal from?
How would this work for a thicker piece of metal (ie. 3-5mm thick)? And what would you recommend for that, or would it not work?
It should work the same
Try putting the object face up in the tray and use a feather to brush the surface. Not kidding, the acid won't eat the feather and the feather won't harm the resist. You will get really sharp cuts.
Also look around for resist pens. They work better.

I have a fairly detailed design I'm trying to do. I have a Cricut machine like your Silhouette, but was considering using it to create a stencil I would then use nail polish or sharpie to fill in. Since I'm working with 0.999 Fine Silver, I needed to buy Nitric Acid. Do you think that would work alright?
How fine of a design are you dealing with? Because you can cut some really thin stuff out of the vinyl on the cricut machine
@@GomeowCreations I traced a dollar bill and converted it to an SVG file. Not all of the fine lines and swirls came through, but it's a fairly decent representation. I've found that I can weed out the vinyl stickers pretty well to be used as a stencil, but doing it in the reverse, to leave the small pieces there and removing the larger sections, is pretty difficult.
Well it might be best to do it the way you wanted to using it as a stencil and filling it in with paint
I am doing a cylindrical object, so I can't use an iron. could I use a heat gun and wrap heat resistant tape around the object to =make the transfer?
You can try, or just use the vinyl cutter to make a sticker.
looks good with the lines going through leave it alone nice piece of work even though it was a booboo, should not have told anybody should have just kept us guising
The amount of time you took with the Sharpie and nail polish vs the vinyl and laser printer determined the quality vs cost.
Had you been as careful and exacting with the first two your results would have been much better whereas you took a lot of time with the other, more expensive methods and had some questionable results given the time and cost.
I etch all the time with Sharpies and nail polish - virtually zero cost - with very good results.
Still - lots of information here and I appreciate the amount of time and setup it took to create the video.
I just want to make sure people know they don't have to buy a vinyl cutting machine to get really good, clean etches.
Yeah videos like this are kind of hard to make with some many options going on it in. I think I said that they do work but you would have to spend a lot more time with the cheaper resists like the marker and nail polish. 😅

you invested like spent like 15" for the sharpie and the nail polish... because you had already decided it didn't work that well... But all the toys... those really worked fine :D

how do you separate the design from the sticky transparent plastic after applying the design to the metal? 8:15
so the Vinyl adhesive is stronger than the clear transfer sheet so it will just come off. Sometimes it will stick in spots that you didn't push down. If that happens just stop and stick it back down and push down on that spot more.

@@GomeowCreations I think I figured it out.. if you sand and clean the metal well before etching. Using a diluted acid to slowly etch is probably easier to control and make sure you don't mess up. A pure acid will eventually get through the impurities on the metal if not cleaned and then etch, but it might not be as even. So mainly the prep work on the metal is just as important as the etching itself.

I honestly don't know what battery acid is bit I guess it makes some sense seeing that it's an acid. You can do it with vinegar and salt too if you are using electricity. But I would stick with the simple acids that I used in the video. 😅👍
